http://tinyurl.com/gpw3hj5 PAIR OF VICTORIAN RED CLUNY LACE LAPPETS & A PAIR OF BEDFORDSHIRE LACE LAPPETS
Size: red – 35.5″ x 2.25″. beds – 39.5″ x 2.25″ max.
Starting Price: £8.00
Auction ends: February 8, 2016, 11:33 AM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller garden*hill, Reading, United Kingdom
Comments: The red lappet scarf is very interesting.  I think the white one is Beds. The red one has many beds characteristics, but it also has the motif against some kind of ground (not point ground, I think) more typical of French work. However I do have pieces in my collection from the Armstrong workshops labeled Cluny, so this type of lace was certainly made in England. Colored lace is unusual, but not unknown. I have both red and burgundy wool examples in my collection, more typically known as Yak lace.  This might be something similar.  Or, it could be a modern copy, but the form isn’t something you typically see in modern pattern books.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: ~1900
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Red one looks clean, not so sure about the white one. Might be a little staining, hard to tell from the photos.
Finish: The white one could use blocking.

Comments: These two are similar so I’ll include them in the same review.  Honiton applique on machine net, both in snails/slugs style. The dress front has two butterflies, and a nicely done lily of the valley motif center front. Turkey tail motifs around the outer edge.  The shawl collar design is a bit sparse, but includes some interesting figural work of birds.  Note the same Lily of the Valley motif, and turkey tails around the edges.  I’m thinking these both came from the same shop.  The inner motifs are actually quite well done, tightly woven, and the roses nicely defined.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: both look clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles on either.

Offered by: Ebay seller garden*hill, Reading, United Kingdom
Comments: A handkerchief with a border of tulle appliqued on machine net with tambour stitch. Interesting floral design with some needlerun stitches used as fillings. Note the extensive esprits, each circle tamboured in place.  Might be a Belgian piece, they are known for tambour applique on net.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: ~1900
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Occasional pulling away from the cloth attachment. A few minor pinholes.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

http://tinyurl.com/h82wh45 A VINTAGE IRISH CROCHET LACE COLLAR OR DRESS FRONT WITH RAISED WORK – Belgian?
Size: 16″ neckline, 11″ center depth.
Starting Price: £16.00
Auction ends: Feburary 8, 2016, 12:40 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller garden*hill, Reading, United Kingdom
Comments: Given the pointed front, this is probably a dress front of Irish crochet. Square mesh ground with crocheted picots.  The motifs are rather scattered and lack the typical three part ‘pinwheel’ organization. There are some interesting floral forms, one almost looks like a butterfly. Raised work in the centers of some flowers, and a raised looped pattern in the ‘butterflies’.  The stitches in the motifs seem a little loose.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Dark cream color, seller thinks it might have been dyed with tea.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

191795222042   Sold for £21.00, 6 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/z7oy5vv VICTORIAN LAWN BRIDAL HANDKERCHIEF WITH BRUSSELS DUCHESSE DE BRUGES LACE EDGING
Size: 13″ square
Starting Price: £25.00
Auction ends: February 8, 2016, 12:44 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller garden*hill, Reading, United Kingdom
Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges handkerchief. The difference between Duchesse de Bruges and Brussels Duchesse is that Brussels Duchesse includes Point de Gaze inserts and Duchesse de Bruges does not. These are terms used at the turn of the century by the original manufacturers, and have fallen a bit out of favor these days in favor of a rather confused description of ‘mixed lace’ or similar terms.  But I’m using the more original terminology.
This piece has conventional Duchesse motifs, finely worked with a little raised work on halfstitch background.  The design is nicely organized.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Broken bride in upper right corner.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Some minor faint creasing in the center cloth.

Comments: A handkerchief with an unusual Beds pattern. The vertical ovals alternate with a flower pattern and are all nicely worked.  Interesting piece.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: I’m wondering if the center cloth is a replacement – it doesn’t really match the lace. Hard to tell.
Damage: Broken bride in upper right corner.
Soilage: A little minor brown spotting in the lace.
Finish: Horizontal and vertical fold creases.

Size: 30″ across top, 13.5″ max depth.
Starting Price: £8.00
Auction ends: February 9, 2016, 1:06 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller woolywonders, Colchester, United Kingdom
Comments: Semicircular black silk veils like this do come up occasionally, with almost identical patterns (http://tinyurl.com/grbenga http://tinyurl.com/mnuje3v). Because of another set I’ve recently seen with a Maltese provenance, I’m inclined to attribute these to Malta (not Spain or France). They are really too heavy for a traditional hat veil, and are probably small headcoverings.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: Early 20th C.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: 2″ detachment of the border. A few broken brides.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles. The border ruffles naturally.

http://tinyurl.com/gm4lxuo Antique Victorian 19th c. Tiffany & Co Carved MOP Point de Gaze Lace Folding Fan
Size: 12.5″ long.
Starting Price: $49.99
Auction ends: February 9, 2016, 6:28 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller woolywonders, Colchester, United Kingdom
Comments: A Brussels Duchesse fan with Mother of Pear sticks, elaborately carved guardsticks and bone? ribs. Could use more closeups of the lace, but there appears to be one large Point de Gaze insert in the center, with elaborate decorative ‘mode’ grid fillings. No raised owrk in the needlelace.  There are numerous small needle-made rings in the bobbinlace flower centers. The bobbinlace is very dense Duchesse, no obvious raised work.
Provenance: Accompanied by a Tiffany box, and a Card for Miss Trowbridge, 221 Church St.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: This fan isn’t opening as widely as one might expect, but I don’t see any obvious sign of modification.
Damage: Lace OK, sticks need repair
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Expected fan creases.

Size: 11″ square
Starting Price: $9.99
Auction ends: February 10, 2016, 11:31 A M PST
Offered by: Ebay seller strangedesires, Amherst, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: A handkerchief edged with a point ground bobbinlace, I think it might be Lille. Although Bucks is a possibility, and the fillings look a bit more like what you see in Mechlin than in an English lace. In Bucks there are more honeycomb and kat stitch.  But the mesh does look a little flatter than the 45 degrees you see in Lille. So Bucks is a possibility.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Occasional pinhole in the ground.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Horizontal and vertical

Auction ends: February 10, 2016, 11:31 AM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller jamiexmas*, Southbridge, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: A border of Duchesse de Bruges. Quite an elegant floral design against an upper background ground of irregular small leaves. Elaborate raised work on halfstitch background in the swagwork. The individual floral design is a little more advanced than what you see in conventional Duchesse. Wish there were more.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut. Engrelure added.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.

Comments: A scarf of Brussels Duchesse. No raised work in the Point de Gaze inserts, but there is some on halfstitch background in the bobbinlace. Note the interesting needlelace decorate ‘mode’ flowers in the centers of many of the bobbinlace flowers. Overall an elegant, complex design.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos. PtdG mesh looks good.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Size: 7″ x 158″
Starting Price: $99.00
Auction ends: February 10, 2016, 3:55 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller jamiexmas*, Southbridge, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: A border of tape lace with a six-pointed star mesh, much like that seen in early Milanese or Flemish laces.  But I think this is a 19th century lace, mainly because of the woven tallies in the fillings. And the overall design has the feeling of Eastern European laces.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: ~1900
Condition:
Modifications: One end cut, can’t see the other end. Engrelure added.
Damage: A few small holes in the mesh.
Soilage: Looks clean.

Comments: A Maltese silk handkerchief. Sun motifs along the outer edge (unusual), and a simple pattern of leaves and a cross on the inside.

Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: A few small holes in the mesh.

Comments: A silk Irish Crochet long dress front with matching choker collar. Made of silk, this piece has heavy decorated raised work, recalling Gros Point.  The motifs are fairly conventional, but the raised work really makes this piece.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: ~1900
Condition:

Damage: A few broken brides.

Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A Valenciennes border, round hole mesh. This sparse design goes back to the early 19th c, and was made for a long time. Sometimes it’s called Valenciennes Anglaise. This piece with the round hole mesh is well done and might be earlier in the century. Very difficult to tell.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: One end cut, difficult to see the other end.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges collar with long frontpieces. Conventional motifs, I like the row of leaves and flowers along the neckline.

Condition:
Modifications: One end cut, difficult to see the other end.
Damage: A few bride weaknesses.

Comments: A metallic insertion with both gold and silver threads. They all look like wrapped silk cores. A fairly complex gupiure for a metallic lace, deviating from the usual ‘torchon’ style. French or Spanish, hard to tell. I especially like the careful way the silver motifs are outlined with a kid of ‘gimp’.

Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
