Comments: A unusual dress front of Brussels Duchesse. Raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze roses – the ones without ground in the front point. The back pieces have no raised petals, but some carefully worked flowers with rings around the centers. Note the raised bobbinlace work on halfstitch ground in the ribbons and swags. Interesting design with embedded needle-made roses and the bow design works all the way around the neckline.
The form of this piece is a bit unusual, but it is really made by the triangular front point. A really interesting piece.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos. PtdG mesh looks good.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: I think there’s a fold crease down the center.

Starting Price: £180.00
Auction ends: April 10, 2016, 12:00 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller linskapet, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway DG6 4UU, United Kingdom
Comments: A high-end market Point de Gaze handkerchief with original box from the Compagnie des Indes. No raised work, and the decorative ‘mode’ fillings are fairly elaborate, mostly in grid form. Good naturalistic design with finely worked motifs and esprits in the ground. This manufacturer was quite famous and maintained workshops in France and Belgium.
Provenance: From a chateau in Brittany.Compagnie des Indes manufacture.
Date: If we assume that the box is original, the date has to be after 1900 since that date is written on the box label.
Condition:
Modifications: None. What I’m really missing in this listing is one good picture of the whole piece laid flat on a dark background.
Damage: Small hole along one edge. Occasional pinhole in the mesh.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Horizontal and vertical fold creases. The motifs look slightly shrunken, probably from a past wash.

Comments: A bodice top of Irish Crochet. Probably French manufacturer from the type of raised work seen in the flower centers, and the very precise picoted mesh. The motifs are rightly worked, and I especially like the little raised edge around the trefoils. A very precise piece.
Provenance: From an estate sale near Boston.

Comments: I’ll review these two pieces together, they are similar. Both are early Valenciennes, the first with the 5-hole ground with snowflake fillings, the second with a partridge eye ground. Both have the trailing design associated with the period, the second one less refined than the first. The ‘line drawing’ effect in the clothwork is very evident in the first piece, which is the more ambitious technically.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 1730’s. The second piece is probably earlier than the fist.
Condition:
Modifications: #1 cut both ends, attached to a circular cloth remnant – I think this might be original.
#2 Cut both ends, engrelure attached. Difficult to tell if the top edge is intact.
Damage: #1 seller sites a few small holes and two repairs along the edge, minor. Lower edge a little frayed in places.
#2 Slight overall wear, one break in the lower edge.
Soilage: Seller cites an ivory/ecru color on #2. Localized red staining.
Finish: Vertical fold creases and other creases on both.

Comments: A shawl collar of floral Beds, and the design looks like oak leaves and acorns. This is a very typical arrangement for Beds collars; a solid inner section with a wide border on the outside and a narrow border inside. Good technique with raised tallies on top of the oak leaf whole stitch. No gimp has been used that I can see. I have a collar of the exact same pattern in my own collection.

Comments: A collar of Point de Gaze, high-end market product. It has elements of a more Venise/Zele type lace with a bride ground. Interesting fillings, and note the variation on the typical Point de Gaze flower center ring chain used on the flowers here. Noted the linked picots around the edges of the piece, which imitates Alençon horsehair. Some motifs have cordonnets, some don’t. The decorative ‘mode’ fillings are a little simple, but the variation in clothwork and the rather Art Nouveau design are exceptional.
Provenance: From a New England estate.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.

Damage: Seller cites ‘small holes in the net’, but I can’t find them.

Comments: A fan of Brussels Duchesse with inlaid Mother of Pearl (abalone) sticks. There’s a very large inset of Point de Gaze on the left hand side with raised petal roses which makes this whole piece unique. Conventional Duchesse motifs with raised work on halfstitch background in the swags. Original tassle survives.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.

Offered by: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: A border of Reticella with the typical three-part design; a larger center portion and two narrower borders. The base does seem to be the original cut and drawnwork cloth I like the compactness of the stitching – it has an early feel. The pattern itself is not very ambitious with the simple triangles. But the picots worked on the side of the picots is something that you wouldn’t see in, say, modern Cyprus work which also uses this motif. It does looked finished on the top and bottom edges, meaning it probably wasn’t cut off of an original linen. Unsure exactly what that means.
Provenance: “Out of early collection”.
Date: 17th-18th c. Difficult to attribute a precise date, this type of work has had a very long history.
Condition:
Modifications: Ends Cut.
Damage: Slight wear on top and bottom edges.

Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: A pair of Valenciennes lappets with square mesh ground. The small motif open design is typical of late 18th early 19th c work, as is the long form of these pieces. Excellent example of the type.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: Early 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: I don’t think they are joined although there’s no clear photo of the tops. I’m not certain, but the picot edge may be a later addition.

Comments: A triangular shawl of Brussels needlelace applique on machine net. Typical romantic floral 2nd Empire design, and note the esprits in the tulle. Needlelace shawls like this don’t come along very often. it lacks an elaborate floral design over the entire piece, but from what I can see, is very acceptable.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 3rd quarter 19th century.
Condition:
Modifications: None, although there’s no photo of the complete piece.
Damage: Seller cites 6 noticeable repairs, a small hole and some snags in the tulle. The repairs shown in the photos look acceptable.
Soilage: Seller cites ‘grubby grey’ color. Which might be an acceptable patina to a collector – I would not recommend washing this piece.

Comments: A large shawl collar of probably Le Puy guipure. It has an interesting square picoted ground, some good fillings, and a little raised work on point ground in some motifs. Note the long narrow woven leaves – this makes me wonder if the piece might be Spanish.

Comments: I’ve never seen this before, a fan leaf of Reticella. Or Punto in Aria if you like since it doesn’t have a drawn/cutwork foundation. You can see signs of a laid cord foundation. Note the interesting looped picots – that’s probably the key to identifying a maker. Hard to say where this is from, and it looks a little stiff for a fan..

Comments: A Point de Gaze lappet scarf. Raised petal roses at the ends of the piece, but overall the design is quite flat. Note the large decorative “mode” filling in a medallion at the ends of the piece. Otherwise fillings are limited to single rings. There are some circular esprits in the mesh. Conventional motifs in a dense pattern, not a lot of room for the mesh.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse rectangular shawl. Raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze inserts. Note the grids of needle-made rings and knots used with the bobbinlace. There’s a little raised bobbin work on halfstitch background in the swags, and some halfstitch shading in the blowers and leaves. The design is an excellent dense floral that doesn’t really crowd anything. I do find all the motifs a bit large, but appropriate to the scale of the piece. The extensive use of gimp puts this a little bit on the Bruges side. A higher end market piece.

Comments: A Belgian needlelace bertha – much like the collar reviewed above. Large Point de Gaze inserts with raised petals flowers – I think they are roses, but there’s some kind of daffodil-like thing coming out of them, so I’m not sure. Diamond windows in the petals. The ‘Venise’ portions are nicely sculpted with single and occasionally loped picots on the brides. Very nice presence to this piece.
