Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: #1 and #2 are small collars of Point de Gaze, no raised work. #2 is Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net, quite delicately done, with some good grid needle-made ‘mode fillings. All from the same seller, and the same Paris auction. I thought they made a nice comparison, especially #1 and #2 which are of very similar form, but different technique. Note how they all have a rather compartmentalized pattern repeating in scallops around the circumference. Both the Point de Gaze pieces have widely spaced looped picots around the edge, which is probably characteristic of a particular manufacturer.
Provenance: From the auction http://tinyurl.com/zbs95qs.  Two similar ones are reviewed in the 4/24/2016 Ebay Alerts.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c on all of them.
Condition:
Modifications: None on any of them.  #2 has a strange looking engrelure on the neckline, but I think it’s original.
Damage: #1 & #2 Nothing obvious from the photos. #3, slight wear on neckline.
Soilage: Seller cites mid ivory color on all three.  #2 has some localized red spots. #3 seller cites some pale brown age discoloration.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Starting Price: £20.00
Auction ends: May 8, 2016, 9:44 AM PDT.
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A narrow border of Lille, narrow pattern with woven tallies in the ground and some honeycomb fillings. Interesting tag labeled “Mirecourt”.  It certainly could have been made in Mirecourt.  Mirecourt is having their 10th couvige May 7-8 (right now!) and a they have a large club http://tinyurl.com/zya2uq6. I think I’ll write them a note to see if anyone recognizes this pattern.
Provenance: From the auction http://tinyurl.com/zbs95qs.
Date: 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut one end, maybe cut, definitely secured on the other end.
Damage: Loose threads along the foot edge, might be remnants from having been sewn to something.  Doesn’t look like damage, although there might be an occasional broken thread.
Soilage: Seller cites pale ivory color.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles. The foot edge isn’t quite straight.

Comments: A fallcap of Brussels bobbin and needlelace applique on machine net. Interesting pattern of alternating bobbin, then needle-made flowers around the border, almost the same designs. Simple decorative ‘mode’ fillings, and note the large dots used as esprits.
Provenance: From the auction http://tinyurl.com/zbs95qs.

Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: Two Honiton guipure handkerchiefs by different sellers (discover4 has another one #291754736352). Snails/slugs style on both, with the second one a little more complex design and more varied woven tally leadworks. The first has  series of the same flowers around the edge with more scattered motifs between the edge and the cloth. This is a very typical arrangement. The second concentrates a lot of the design in the corners, and both have the usual ‘flower garden’ Honiton feel.  Some will say this is the local ‘hedge row’ flower pattern.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos on either.
Soilage: A little brown spotting on both.

Comments: Two Beds collars. The bottom one  is a fairly standard Armstrong-type design.  The top one is interesting both in form and technique with the elaborate woven leaves raised on top of the base clothwork. It also has some unusual motifs.  Both have the typical picoted bride ground.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Offered by: Ebay seller kollektik, SIDBURY, Devon, United Kingdom
Comments: Nice to think that this piece came from Devon where the seller is located. A triangular shawl of Honiton applique on machine net edged with a deep border of “Honiton Point” guipure, meaning Honiton motifs with a needle-made ground. Snails/slugs style in the fringe.  The applique is unusual – the motifs look more refined than those toward the bottom of the fringe – not typical Honiton motifs. Note how the tulle is carefully cut away to better display the fillings.  I wonder if this piece started life out in exactly this form. Wish there was a photo showing the whole thing laid out flat.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Occasional pinhole in the mesh and broken attachment in the fringe.
Soilage: Some localized brown staining
Finish: Fold creases throughout.

Offered by: Ebay seller moppysattic, Horseheads, New York, United States
Comments: A Brussels Duchesse parasol cover with 8 segments – this is pretty typical. No raised work in the Point de Gaze inserts. There is some interesting raised work on half-stitch ground n the bobbinlace – see the little quatrefoils with raised rings in the swags.  These raised rings are found in other flower centers, along with little needle-made ‘modes’ appearing unexpectedly in the centers of some flowers.  Interesting design, very effective, well made.
Provenance: Label, “Mrs. Charles S. Ristine, Strafford, Pa.” on the mounting paper.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None. It has been sewn to a blue tissue backing.
Damage: A few broken brides.
Soilage: Numerous localized brown stains.
Finish: Some creasing along the outer edge. Also some creasing where you might expect the ribs of the parasol to be.  I’m wondering if there are some attachments sewn on the back, or if the lace has been folded into some kind of pocket. You can’t see the details in the photos because of the backing.

Comments: An eight-section parasol cover of black silk, resembles Le Puy Guipure. The interesting naturalistic leaves around the edges speak to a quality designer, and might support a Le Puy manufacture.  But the ground, and the general technique don’t look very typical of Le Puy.  Spain could be an option.
Provenance: Label, “Mrs. Charles S. Ristine, Strafford, Pa.” on the mounting paper.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None. It has been sewn to a white tissue backing.
Damage: Some holes in the clothwork, a few broken brides, tears near the center.
Soilage: Looks clean but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: A few creases.  Hard to tell if it was ever mounted, but the damage to the center hole makes me think it once was.

Comments: There are a lot of Venise pieces on Ebay, but in terms of design this one is exceptional.  I think it might be a Zele piece. The shading in the clothwork, and the handling of cordonnet work which outlines the details of the figures is of the highest quality. I wish I could get a really closeup photo of the mesh used to represent the ground – that might settle a choice between Belgium and France.  I do think that some of the decorative ‘mode’ fillings look more Belgian than French.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: Around 1900

Comments: A Point de Gaze border, n raised work.  The curved rose/leaf repeat is quite naturalistic, and the piece includes some decorative ‘mode’ fillings almost in a snowflake pattern.

Date: 4th quarter 19th c.

Comments: A Louis XV Mechlin border. This type of design was occasionally used with the long foot edge matched together to double the width of the piece. Here is it used as a single border. It has the standard quatrefoil fillings, and I like parts of the leaf work which are a little unusual in design.
Provenance: From the auction http://tinyurl.com/zbs95qs.
Date: mid 18th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Both ends cut, engrelure added. I think the picoted edge is a later addition.
Damage: Some pinholes in the mesh.
Soilage: Seller cites a mid ivory color with areas of pale brown age marks.

Comments: A Point de Gaze border with raised single petal roses. Typical romantic 2nd Empire florals, carefully done with some nice grid decorative ‘mode’ fillings. I’m probably nitpicking here, but the large rose in each repeat might be just a little too large for the design.  But the overall effect is quite nice.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Both ends cut.

Provenance: None cited.

Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Pinholes and small holes in some PtdG mesh.  Occasional frayed and loose brides in the bobbinlace.

Comments: A fallcap of Honiton Point lace, meaning Honiton motifs with a needle-made ground. Snails/slugs style with extensive tally leadworks.  I like the look and the symmetry of this piece, especially the unusual border around the peak of the cap.
Provenance: None cited.

Comments: A Honiton Point collar, well out of the snails/slugs style. Quite an effective design of large roses and small massed leaves. Good woven tally leadworks of one type are used as filings everywhere. The brides are unusual, needlemade bars loosely buttonholed over. The ends of the engrelure used along the neckline could have been finished better. Some of the flowers overlap at the collar points, which is a bit unusual.

Comments: A excellent Valenciennes lappet with cinq trou ground. This one has a vertically symmetric design, which is unusual. Snowflake variation fillings, and well defined line-drawing definition in the clothwork.  The designs do repeat along the length of the piece, and although this is a fine example, better ones will vary the design throughout the length.  Wonder where the other lappet is.
Provenance: From the auction http://tinyurl.com/zbs95qs.
Date: ~1730
Condition:
Modifications: Top is cut.
Damage: Occasional bare spot in the clothwork, but this looks original.
Soilage: I see a faint brown mark at the top left, but hard to say if this is a stain. Otherwise it looks clean.

Comments: A border of Mechlin with cinq trou ground – a nice comparison with the Valenciennes lappet reviewed above. This one has the typical quatrefoil fillings, and only a little definition in the clothwork. This piece has the more usual undulating design of Louis XV laces. Mechlin explored several different grounds early on, and this is an excellent example of that type of experimentation.
Provenance: None cited.

Damage: Foot edge is worn with occasional breaks. A few tiny holes in the mesh.

Comments: A Carrickmacross guipure handkerchief. Note the typical round picots, which are quite dense in the center section. Straight picots are used inside the outer edge, sign of a better made piece. Shamrock design with some good raised rings. The cordonnet is used to further define the shamrocks and leaves.
Provenance: None cited.

Comments: A collar with long front points of Duchesse de Bruxelles.  One raised petal at the back Point de Gaze rose. A little raised work on halfstitch ground in the bobbinlace swags. Interesting profile to this piece, wide at the top to go over the bust, narrow at the waist, then flaring out at the bottom again. Perfect for the corseted figure. We’ve seen quite a few of this shape on Ebay.  Overall this is an excellent example of the type, using conventional motifs put together in a pleasing pattern.

Comments: A border of Mechlin – you sometimes see this pattern in Lille/Beveran laces. Three rows of small buds are used as esprits. The ‘boteh’ cited by the seller is the Persian teardrop shape that is actually a vegetable motif. The lace design might be influenced by imported Indian shawls, or it could just be an elaborate leaf.  This would be a good subject for a textile thesis.

Comments: A small, unusual collar of what appears to be English Beds. The gimp is very heavy, and there’s some unusual ground work – torchon on the top and a kind of picoted bride with woven tallies along the neckline.  The picoted outer edge is also unusual – normally with Beds you find an elaborated plaited border.

I’ve was hiking on Saturday, and will add with more pieces in the next few days.  Interesting hike, we climbed over rocks to out-of-the way places to find amazing petroglyphs like this:

And I’m willing to bet that not many of you have seen a 4 foot long Diamondback Rattlesnake in the wild:
