Comments: Interesting very narrow border of round hole 18th c Valenciennes. It has a kind of Louis XV undulating design, but is a bit limited because of the width.  Not much line drawing.  Actually quite an interesting piece.

Comments: A Lille border – note the thread.  This is probably a slightly irregularly spun fine linen, not uncommon in pieces like this.  The very thin design dates from around 1800, and can be found in contemporary Mechlin.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: ~1800
Condition:
Modifications: Cut one end, cut and secured on the other end.

Comments: A lappet scarf of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. Includes lines of needle-made ring fillings. Good design with a large splashy leaf at each end, smaller leaves and plants along the sides and up the center – I like the way the design of the line up the center is handled, especially near the ends.

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges deep collar, a little on the Bloemwerk side with the trefoil leaves and simple flowers. Single woven tallies used as fillings, also a sign of Bruges work.

Starting Price: £35.00
Auction ends: May 16, 2016, 10:49 AM PDT.
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: This appears to be three pieces joined together, each a different pattern.  They are what we now assume to be ‘Binche’, mid 18th c. There are some interesting ‘medallion forms at the top of the photo, while the midsection has a more obvious candelabra symmetry.  The bottom shows the same symmetry, but a little more obscure.  I find it a bit odd that they are all the same width – I wonder if the first section might be cut along the bottom. Overall this is three good samples of a fairly rare lace.
Provenance: From the auction http://tinyurl.com/zbs95qs.
Date: Mid 18th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None. Two joins. picot border looks like a later addition along the bottom of the first section (which might be cut), original in the second. Can’t tell in the third.
Damage: Foot edge is a little frayed.
Soilage: Seller cites mid ivory color. A few localized brown stains.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles

Comments: A long collar of Point de Gaze, no raised work.  Romantic floral 2nd Empire design, with naturalistic unusual flowers. There are a few decorative ‘mode’ fillings, mostly single rings, a little more elaborate tin the outer strapwork.  A high-end market piece.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: I’m not certain if the tips of the points are cut.
Damage:  small holes and pinholes in the mesh throughout. Occasional neckline edge break. A few signs of repair.
Soilage: I see the occasional localized light brown spot, faint.

Comments: A table runner of figural Cantu bobbinlace with dogs, birds, and dragonflies. These come up occasionally, with various types of figures. This one is neatly made with typical three- and five-part flowerheads and hooks. Tightly woven figures.
Provenance: This has been in the seller’s family since the early 1900’s.

Modifications: I’m not certain if the tips of the points are cut.

Comments: An oval Maltese mat. Seller says it is linen – hard to tell form the photos. This is a four part piece, outer ring alternates flowers and crosses with oval 6-pointed star ground. This ground was often used in better quality pieces.  The two inner rings have guipure of leaves and flowers, with an inner medallion of the Maltese cross.
Provenance: None cited.

Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A collar of Brussels Duchesse, raised petal rose in the center back Point de Gaze insert. Raised work on half-stitch ground in the bobbinlace scrolls.  There are just a few motifs in the bobbinlace and they all look a little large, but the design is effective with this pattern.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:

Damage:  Occasional broken bride.

Starting Price: £15.00
Auction ends: May 17, 2016, 10:59 AM PDT.
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A collar and cuff set of Point de Gaze, no raised work. Delicate design with knots (sometimes picoted) and groups of three stitches used as grids fillings. Interesting effect which might not be really obvious – the mesh follows the line of the motifs, not a rigid overall horizontal pattern.  Also note the widely spaced knotted picots. The design, which is not what you first think of in Point de Gaze, fills the space well.
Provenance: From the auction http://tinyurl.com/zbs95qs.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage:  A little wear along the neckline. Occasional pinhole in the mesh.
Soilage: Discoloration along neckline. Seller cites mid ivory collar.

Starting Price: $45.00
Auction ends: May 17, 2016, 11:30 AM PDT.
Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester, United Kingdom
Comments: A bertha of Branscombe mixed tape lace – Maybe.  Lillie Trivett has a book out on Branscombe and her examples are a little heavier than what we see here. I do see lots of what she calls ‘flat cutwork’ (the little round motifs), although it’s hard to say how they are made.  Overall I’d have to say that this is a lighter piece than typical Branscomb, with a wide variety of filling stitches.  It leaves an impressive effect, which is something you don’t often see in these laces.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: ~1900
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage:  Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites a mid ivory color.

Auction ends: May 17, 2016, 11:33 AM PDT.
Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester, United Kingdom
Comments: A bertha of combined Point de Gaze and ‘venise’ type lace, far more naturalistic design than is usually found. A high-end market piece. Triple raised petal roses.  Extensive grid-type decorative ‘mode’ fillings, but what really makes the piece is the inclusion of the ‘venise’ lace with bride ground along the outside edge and within the mesh, The clothwork is a little more dense here than in the the PtdG motifs. This is also a place to play more with the raised cordonnet.  Note also the widely space spiked picots
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage:  Seller cites 4 small holes in the mesh.
Soilage: Seller cites a few small very faint marks. There are several small repairs to the mesh.

Offered by: Ebay seller bethsalie, paris, Île-de-France, France
Comments: A Mechlin border. It has an early design of short repeat floral border with 4 rows of bud esprits above. But I’m bothered by the use of half-stitch in the motifs, which is usually a little later technique.  Excellent, even work.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 1st half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends.
Damage:  Foot edge worn especially near one end.  A few pinholes in the mesh.

Comments: A Point d’Angleterre border. Just a technical point, the Point de Gaze mesh is worked vertically across the piece, which is unusual. I’m making a note of this for my needlelace practicum class at IOLI in July.  Finely worked bobbinlace motifs with a few needle-made fillings, oeverall the whole design is a little flat and crowded.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.

Modifications: Cut both ends.
Damage:  Occasional pinhole in the mesh.

Starting Price: $325.00
Auction ends: May 17, 2016, 2:54 PM PDT.
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: Three lengths of early narrow, round hole Valenciennes. Two of the borders match in pattern. The third has a different pattern, which changes after a join. It’s a little hard to figure out, or maybe it’s just getting late and I’m tired. These are fairly simple line-drawn designs which look well matched on the long sides as the seller illustrates.  Unusual to find a very long piece of this lace.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: mid 18th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Ends cut on two of the pieces, can’t see the ends on the third.  Several joins.
Damage:  One piece has numerous holes. Others have more pinhole damage.
Soilage: Colors vary.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of Valenciennes with cinq trou ground. This looks similar to Mechlin with the quatrefoil fillings, but the lack of a gimp is what distinguishes the piece. It has a short repeat of a floral motif – not much line-drawing, and large areas are have quatrefoil or round fillings.
Provenance: From the auction http://tinyurl.com/zbs95qs.
Date: 2nd quarter 18th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Ends cut.
Damage:  Very slight fraying along the foot edge.
Soilage: Seller cites mid ivory color. A few light brown age marks. Seller cites a ‘small dusty mark’, not sure what that means.

Comments: A wide flounce of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net.  The design is a simple with florals along the lower edge and round esprits which don’t extend all the way to the top.  It’s the size of a crinoline flounce, but not as elaborate as we usually expect.

Comments: Three lengths of the same Regency Point pattern. See http://tinyurl.com/hqfd8aa for an article on Regency Point that I wrote for LaceNews. Comments: A collar of Brussels bobbin and needlelace applique on machine net.  No raised work, and fairly simple knotted fillings, sometimes with picots.  Small motifs, some of which look like crowns. This is a fairly unusual form for this lace, it wasn’t quite strong enough for a neckpiece.
