Comments: A narrow Mechlin border with a simple short repeat, one bud esprit in the upper ground. Simple bars and tallies in the fillings. The motifs have the slightly ‘blocky’ look typical of this style.
Provenance: From the auction http://tinyurl.com/zbs95qs.

Comments: Interesting very narrow border of round hole 18th c Valenciennes. It has a kind of Louis XV undulating design, but is a bit limited because of the width. Not much line drawing. Actually quite an interesting piece.

Comments: A large shawl collar, almost a shawl, of “pale gold” silk Maltese. Interesting guipure leaf design around the edges; round medallions and crossed leaves in the main body, and good guipure work in the center back motif, which includes some crosses. Nice presence to this piece.

Comments: A lappet scarf of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. Includes lines of needle-made ring fillings. Good design with a large splashy leaf at each end, smaller leaves and plants along the sides and up the center – I like the way the design of the line up the center is handled, especially near the ends.

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges deep collar, a little on the Bloemwerk side with the trefoil leaves and simple flowers. Note also the ‘islands’ in the middle of the picoted brides, also a sign of Bruges work. There is some raised work on halfstitch ground in the swags. Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: This appears to be three pieces joined together, each a different pattern. They are what we now assume to be ‘Binche’, mid 18th c. There are some interesting ‘medallion forms at the top of the photo, while the midsection has a more obvious candelabra symmetry. The bottom shows the same symmetry, but a little more obscure. I find it a bit odd that they are all the same width – I wonder if the first section might be cut along the bottom. Overall this is three good samples of a fairly rare lace.
Provenance: From the auction http://tinyurl.com/zbs95qs.
Date: Mid 18th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None. Two joins. picot border looks like a later addition along the bottom of the first section (which might be cut), original in the second. Can’t tell in the third.
Damage: Foot edge is a little frayed.

Comments: A collar and cuff set of Point de Gaze, no raised work. Delicate design with knots (sometimes picoted) and groups of three stitches used as grids fillings. Interesting effect which might not be really obvious – the mesh follows the line of the motifs, not a rigid overall horizontal pattern. Also note the widely spaced knotted picots. The design, which is not what you first think of in Point de Gaze, fills the space well.
Provenance: From the auction http://tinyurl.com/zbs95qs.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.

Comments: A bertha of Branscombe mixed tape lace – Maybe. Lillie Trivett has a book out on Branscombe and her examples are a little heavier than what we see here. I do see lots of what she calls ‘flat cutwork’ (the little round motifs), although it’s hard to say how they are made. Overall I’d have to say that this is a lighter piece than typical Branscomb, with a wide variety of filling stitches. It leaves an impressive effect, which is something you don’t often see in these laces.

Comments: A bertha of combined Point de Gaze and ‘venise’ type lace, far more naturalistic design than is usually found. A high-end market piece. Triple raised petal roses. Extensive grid-type decorative ‘mode’ fillings, but what really makes the piece is the inclusion of the ‘venise’ lace with bride ground along the outside edge and within the mesh, The clothwork is a little more dense here than in the the PtdG motifs. This is also a place to play more with the raised cordonnet. Note also the widely space spiked picots
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.

Comments: A Mechlin border. It has an early design of short repeat floral border with 4 rows of bud esprits above. But I’m bothered by the use of half-stitch in the motifs, which is usually a little later technique. Excellent, even work.

Comments: A Point d’Angleterre border. Just a technical point, the Point de Gaze mesh is worked vertically across the piece, which is unusual. I’m making a note of this for my needlelace practicum class at IOLI in July. Finely worked bobbinlace motifs with a few needle-made fillings, oeverall the whole design is a little flat and crowded.

Comments: Three lengths of early narrow, round hole Valenciennes. Two of the borders match in pattern. The third has a different pattern, which changes after a join. It’s a little hard to figure out, or maybe it’s just getting late and I’m tired. These are fairly simple line-drawn designs which look well matched on the long sides as the seller illustrates. Unusual to find a very long piece of this lace.
Provenance: None cited.

Comments: A border of Valenciennes with cinq trou ground. This looks similar to Mechlin with the quatrefoil fillings, but the lack of a gimp is what distinguishes the piece. It has a short repeat of a floral motif – not much line-drawing, and large areas are have quatrefoil or round fillings.
