Offered by: Ebay seller home.children, Penns Grove, New Jersey, United States
Ebay seller hamstershoard, Scottish Borders, United Kingdom
Comments: These Irish Crochet collars are similar in form so I’ll put them together. This first has heavy guipure motifs with raised rings. Looks like Clones knots on the picots. The second is a much lighter design with flowerheads forming the outer scallops. I think the picots are crocheted, hard to tell from the photos. This is an earlier design with the grounps of double stitch forming square s int he ground.  Both are nicely executed.
Provenance: None cited.

Offered by: Ebay seller winterwonderlandfairy, london, United Kingdom
Comments: A deep collar of Duchesse de Bruges, a little on the Bloemwerk side. Double hexagonal picoted brides, and some nice and varied fillings. It’s hard to see the design because of the white background (please, photography your laces on a dark background), but the motifs resemble ‘Old Flanders’.

Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Comments: A border of Bayeux bobbinlace. Beautiful floral design with both half and whole stitch in the motifs. It does have a Dieppe ground, but from the general style and technique I’ll go with Bayeux. This type of lace is not well documented.
Provenance: From the auction http://tinyurl.com/zbs95qs.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends, engrelure added.  One join or repair, hard to tell, it goes vertically all the way across the width.
Damage: A little separation of the engurelure at the ends. One repair.

Comments: A border of Mechlin, quite light in appearance. Excellent technique, and note the small woven tallies in the fillings. I’m much convinced that pieces like this probably date from WWI.  And there’s a lot more of it around than we realize.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 1st quarter 20th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends, engurelure added.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites light ecru color. A few small brown spots.

Comments: A fallcap of Honiton Point, meaning Honiton with a needle-made ground The piece has exceptionally long lappets. Snails/slugs style, beautifully worked, tightly woven motifs. Good woven tally grids used as fillings, and it has the typical ‘hedgerow’ pattern.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 3rd quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Might be a broken attachment in a few places.
Soilage: Hard to tell against the red background, but it looks a little beige.  Red stains throughout.

Starting Price: £185.00

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: Interesting frontpiece of Honiton with matching cuffs.  Note the little birds in halfstitch with raised wings, and the delicate fern, trefoil and rose motifs. The ground with the little woven squares is quite unusual. You can see the snails/slugs antecedents in this piece, but it is definitely moving toward something new.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage:  Localized brown staining.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A pair of Brussels bobbin lace lappets with droschel ground. Louis XV design, but tending toward the openness of Louis XVI. Small sprigs and other elements, the design of which changes as you go along the length of the lappets. This is a sign of a better piece. The work is very precise, and the fillings (which is something you pay attention to carefully in pieces like this) are well executed. The condition is exceptional.
Provenance: From the auction http://tinyurl.com/zbs95qs.
Date: 3rd quarter 17th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Tops cut.
Damage: A few tiny pulls in the mesh, minor.
Soilage:  Localized pale brown marks.

Comments: A shawl collar of handmade Chantilly. This is not an unusual form for Chantilly, although the design is fairly simple. Sprigs and dotted esprits in the main body, a floral inner border, and an outer edge with a short flower and leaf repeat.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 3rd quarter 18th c.
Condition:

Comments: A handkerchief of Youghal, monogrammed “B J” in whitework.  Note how the lace goes into the central cloth in the corners. Typical ‘double’ hexagonal brides and good fillings stitches. It has a kind of cornucopia design. Good example of the type.
Provenance: None cited.

Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Occasional broken stitch, minor.

Offered by: Ebay seller tweak5, Bristol,Avon. United Kingdom
Comments: Parasol covers of Honiton guipure are very rare. This could be an assembled piece, with the outer border being a separate piece. The lace is snails/slugs style, nicely worked with picoted square brides. There are a few leaf motifs that I haven’t seen before.  The piece is lined with both a black and white layer of silk.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: One broken rib which has caused two breaks in the lace where the rib has pushed through. Silk linings have some splits.
Soilage:  Looks clean, but there might be a little browning.

: 44″ x 3.75″
Starting Price: $49.00
Auction ends: June 16, 2016 8:21 AM PDT.
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: Joined lappets of Valenciennes, late 18th century with the small sold motifs and round ground. I suspect these are very light. There is little in the way of ‘line drawing’ in the motifs – they are too small and have to stand by themselves in the design.  Good, elegant design.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 18th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Nice zigzag join at the tops that matches the pattern well. Seller says the picot edge is a later addition, I’m not sure about that. Would have to get it under the microscope to say for certain.
Damage: Small holes and pinholes throughout.through.
Soilage:  Looks clean, but there might be a little browning.
Finish: Little wrinkling, but several vertical and diagonal creases.

Starting Price: $40.00 with reserve.
Auction ends: June 16, 2016 8:26 AM PDT.
Offered by: Ebay seller greatlace, Palm Beach, Florida, United States
Comments: This type of lace was made both in Alençon and Argentan, so it is very difficult to give a definite attribution. I’ve even seen patterns dated in the late 19th c in the Alençon museum of the same pattern type. The lappets are in the late 18th c style with brides bouclée. Réseau fin is used along the edges – this is a very typical design for the period.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 18th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Secured at the top, but the design does look cut.
Damage: Well done large repair to the mesh in the bottom lappet in the photo.  Pinholes and pulls elsewhere in the mesh.
Soilage:  Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Size
: 8 feet x 4.75″
Starting Price: £35.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: June 17, 2016 5:47 AM PDT.
Offered by: Ebay seller supa_troopa, Redditch, Worcestershire, United Kingdom
Comments: This might be an earlier Norther Italian lace, however it was also made extensively in Eastern European countries. The 6-pointed star mesh is used in Italy, but it does seem to have a more broken up design than typical Milanese product. And the very plain straight borders are not typical of early lace.  I think it’s a 19th c Eastern European product.  It is also very long, not what you would expect from early Milanese.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: Later 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Ends cut.
Damage: Small holes in the mesh. A few loose threads along the borders.
Soilage:  Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: A high-end market rectangular shawl of Brussels needlelace applique on machine net.  Romantic 2nd Empire floral design with excellent technique and extensive decorative ‘mode’ fillings.  Note the tiny dots used as esprits in the ground.  No raised work.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 3rd quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: A few repairs. Seller cites areas of wear.
Soilage:  Seller cites mid ivory color with darkened area to part of one border.

Starting Price: $9.99
Auction ends: June 17, 2016 2:41 PM PDT.
Offered by: Ebay seller strangedesires, Amherst, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: A long collar of Duchesse de Bruges.  It has a second piece attached to the collar to form a kind of stand-up fringe. There’s a little raised work in the strapwork against half-stitch ground.  Good design and technique in mostly conventional motifs. The design seems to change as you get nearer the ends, but it all works well together.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4thd quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None, and it has snaps and tiny hook for closure.
Damage: A few repairs. Seller cites areas of wear.
Soilage:  Seller cites some slight discoloration.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles

Starting Price: AU $149.99 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: June 17, 2016 10:59 PM PDT.
Offered by: Ebay seller colcot, Central Coast, New South Wales, Australia
Comments: This collar falls into a category I call ‘unknown guipures’. The undulations around the edge look Maltese, but this is not a typical Maltese pattern.  I’ve seen the 8 petaled flowers along the neckline before, but that piece was done in silk. This doesn’t look like silk, but hard to tell from the photos.  I’m leaning toward a Spanish attribution.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4thd quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious form the photos.
Soilage:  Looks clean.
Finish: Slight wrinkling.
