Comments: An unusual set of six Ñanduti placemats. Three different sol motif designs, palm leaf border, and a complex ground cross by diagonal woven motifs. We occasionally see table linens with Ñanduti inserts, but a set of placemats of this delicate lace is rare.

Soilage: Some light brown spotting.

Comments: A short repeat border of pieced bobbinlace, perhaps from Bruges. Unusual design, perhaps tulips? Difficult to see the pattern against the peach-colored background.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: Carrickmacross berthas are rare, perhaps indicating an earlier piece. This one is Carrickmacross applique, with a little bride work along the outer edge. Basically a shamrock design with some kind of linear overlapping flower motif used as dividers – I don’t recognize this.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Small holes and repairs to the tulle. Wear along the neckline.
Soilage: Seller sites dark cream color.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles, just overall wear.

Offered by: Ebay seller vanye90, United Kingdom
Comments: A small Belgian Point de Fée handkerchief. This is a lace that derives from early Binche patterns. Note the many square tallies, the straight edges, and rather abstract design. The technique is excellent, but the join at the bottom looks clumsy. There are a number of modern pattern books for this type of lace, which is considered one of the most difficult that today’s lacemakers can attempt.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Localized brown spotting in the center cloth.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Starting Price: $274.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: September 4, 2016 2:27 PM PDT.
Offered by: Ebay seller soniasantiqueandvintagetextiles, Seabrook, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: Two pieces of the same metallic lace, silver threads wrapped on a silk core. No flat strips evident. This is a very typical design, could have been made in France or Spain. The techniques used in this lace are found consistently in most metallic laces and change little over the year. Very difficult to date, but given the wear and the perhaps original yellow backing fabric, I’ll guess 18th c.
There are very good modern metallic laces being made using many of the old patterns.
Provenance: Purchased at a French auction house 30 years ago.
Date: perhaps 18th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut on ends, mounted on silk fabrics.
Damage: Some of the threads are worn through to the silk core.
Soilage: Tarnished.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller sabclovell, Lovell, Maine, United States
Comments: A flounce of Brussels Duchesse – no raised work in the Point de Gaze inserts. The motifs are quite small, well worked, with a non-typical floral design. Irregular picoted brides. Interesting use of decorative ‘mode’ fillings along leaf veins and around flower centers – along with more typical ‘fan’ like sprays usually found in Duchesse.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 3rd quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut one end, can’t see the other end.
Damage: Occasional break along the top edge.

Offered by: Ebay seller garden*hill, Reading, United Kingdom
Comments: A bertha of Point de Gaze with triple layer raised petal roses. Good design along conventional floral standards, and what really makes this piece are the decorative ‘mode’ fillings used single and in grids. This is tending toward a high-end market piece which has seen better days.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 3rd quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Extensive damage to the ground, especially along the neckline.
Soilage: Large stain at the front (in these berthas the open ends are at the back). Isolated stains throughout.

Comments: A collar of Brussels Duchesse, no raised work in the Point de Gaze panels. Good decorative ‘mode’ fillings in the Point de Gaze inserts, especially the large wheel at the back. The duchesse has no raised work and motifs are fairly large. But it all seems to work together well.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 3rd quarter 19th c.

Comments: A Point de Gaze handkerchief, no raised work. The atypical design contains a variety of flower, and there are single and row decorative ‘mode’ fillings in the strapwork near the cloth and between the cloth and outer edge. Note the spiky widely spaced picots on the outer edge, sign of a specific but unknown manufacturer.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: ~1900

Comments: A small collar of Burano needlelace. Conventional floral design with simple fillings. Small collars like this are unusual – smaller pieces usually tend to be round used for table linens. But what is really unusual about this piece is that the cordonnet is buttonholed over. Normally it is just overcast on. It would be worth getting this one under the microscope.

Comments: A set of 8 placemats in Burano needlelace. It combines elements with some mesh inserted, but mostly with brides. The motifs with brides have buttonholed cordonnets, those next to the mesh are overcast. There is a little 3-d work with some double layered flowers. Quite unusual to find a set like this.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: ~1900
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Seller cites one detached bride, and shows one small hole in the mesh.
Soilage: Seller cites creamy white color. Says the set has been hand laundered with care, but gives no details on the process.

Comments: A Belgian Point d’Angleterre (bobbinlace motifs with Point de Gaze ground) fan with Mother of Pearl (abalone) sticks. Original tassel is present. Some good raised edges in the lace, and a number of decorative ‘mode’ fillings, some in grid form. The design is quite bold, a kind of Art Nouveau feel. The symmetry of the design breaks down a lot near the ends, which looks a little odd.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.

Damage: Parts of 3 sticks missing. One more stick looks broken. Occasional pinhole in the esh of the lace.
