Comments: A rectangle of hemmed linen with Youghal needlelace at the top edge and in a carefully cut out insert. The shamrocks in the insert have divided leaves, a nice touch. So is the complex grid filling. Even the best Youghal handkerchiefs rarely have this complexity. The top insert is symmetric around the center point, and a rather simple, but dense design. I don’t know what this is for. Perhaps as suggested by the seller, some kind of dress insert. It’s too small for a hand towel. Note the top border is offset relative to the edges a bid, unsure why. Any suggestions?

Comments: Honiton motifs like this don’t come up for sale too often, but there does seem to be a regular supply. The finished pieces are often attached to blue paper – note the shiny finish on the paper for the 2nd piece. They are probably left over piecework for orders that were never completed, and as such provide insight into the Honiton lace industry. The designs of these two pieces is more advanced than the snails/slugs style.

Comments: A border of English Point ground lace. I’m going to say this is Regency Point, because of the general design, large filling areas, and the fact that the little four-petal flower near the border has an inside gimp and no gimp on the outer edge. Hard to tell if this is original or a more modern copy.

Comments: A Point d’Angleterre border made in imitation of Point de France needlelace. The standing figure under the crown is probably Louis XIV in theatrical costume. This is likely a copy of a late 17th c piece. There are some small flowers with ‘perls’ much like Rosaline. Point de Gaze mesh.
We have seen something like this before. There is a piece reviewed in the 5/13/2015 Ebay Alerts http://tinyurl.com/js7v7ml which is a copy of a well known late 17th c cravat in the St. Gallen collection. Several copies are known, including a ‘Point d’Angleterre’ one in the collection of Margaret Simeon. Such copies were done not only in this technique, but also as bobbinlace applique on machine net.

Comments: A collar of Sol lace medallions, difficult to say where it was made. The thread is a bit heavy, with just two motifs. A small loosely woven circle, and a larger pinwheel motifs. It is a complex form with long front lappets, and might be an early 19th c craft piece. But the design is interesting and the work of a quality that might indicate a more professional origin.

Comments: Carrickmacross table linens are rare. The set of round Carrickmacross applique mats are small for dinner pieces, but could be used for lunch or tea. They appear to be a trousseau set with initials in the centers. Shamrock and rose design with needlerun fillings, and the typical looped picot border. Buttonholed rings used as ‘esprits’ in the tulle. The cloth used is quite transparent, and I’m having trouble seeing how the edges are appliqued to the tulle. No obvious hand stitching, could use a really good closeup.

Comments: A high-end market Honiton guipure handkerchief. Finely worked ferns, feathery leaves, and figural butterflies. The clothwork in the pointed leaves with raised work is very even. Note the half stitch shading used in flowers and butterflies. Here is the “Radford” handkerchief in the Met http://tinyurl.com/hsvdpky, and note it is labeled as ‘possibly designed by Emma Radford ( British, 1837-1901)’. There are differences between the two. The Met’s example has picoted brides and a much busier design with smaller motifs. There is little sign of the traditional motifs found in the Ebay piece, yet the technique of the leaves and butterflies is similar in both. The eBay’s treatment of the edge next to the center cloth is less sophisticated than the Met example. It seems to me that the Ebay piece is a more traditional design, although well out of the snails/slugs mode.
Provenance: Similar to work of Emma Radford in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Honiton Museum in Devon. See comments above.

Comments: A border of Flat Point, difficult to say when and where it was made. The design is complete, which is in itself unusual for an early piece. It does have the look of linen with a patina one might expect from cold pressing (although this might just be fuzzy photography.) Filling stitches and eyelets are are seen in early work. But there were so many copies of this kind of lace made, that without detailed examination, I’d say the jury is out.

Comments: This could be an early Flemish bobbinlace piece – the quality of the small motifs and the presence of the 6psided plaited mesh are good signs. It also has the vertical symmetry (sometimes called ‘candelabra’) typical of the later 17th c. Large flounces like this were usually used as furnishing pieces.
Provenance: None cited.

Modifications: Reworked as a hooded shawl with a chiffon lining and some fringe added. Original piece cut and secured on the ends. Bottom edge looks original, can’t see the top edge to tell if it may have been modified.
Damage: A number of small holes in the mesh, fairly localized.

Comments: A Louis XV mid 18th c needlelace border. I can’t see the mesh clearly, but I suspect is is brides tortillée, which would put this in the Argentan style. It has a small variety of decorative ‘mode’ filling stitches. These include picoted hexagonal brides, groups of picoted rings, and star-like motifs. The clothwork is very solid, no decoration in the clothwork. Picots in the main work seem limited to the outer edge, and I don’t see any horsehair – also typical of Argentan work.

Comments: Laces like this are a puzzle. They appeared in the 18th century, and although they are often considered a Milanese subcategory, they were more common in Aquila in the central Italian Abruzzi region, usually with a more narrow tape than this example. Note the vertical symmetry of the design, also a characteristic of this lace. In addition to the wider tape, this example has double picoted brides, which is unusual, and aligns more to work in Milan. This tape lace is a simple technique and also spread into Eastern Europe. Copies have been made well into the 20th c, and I’m reluctant to attribute a precise origin to this piece.

Comments: I think this is a Burano piece, copying the smaller version of Gros Point, sometimes called Rose Point. But I don’t like that term because everything in the lace world ends up being called Rose Point at some time or another. Burano didn’t only make the grounded laces with overcast cordonnet, they also produced a lot of this type of lace. The long twisted stitches are the best indication.
