Ebay Alerts! Thirty-five items – February 15, 2015

http://tinyurl.com/pt2pt53 Exceptional Antique Brussels Duchesse Large Collar 1850-1870-

Auction ends: February 15, 2015 8:19 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller supa_troopa, Redditch, Worcestershire, United Kingdom
Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges deep collar with lappet fronts. Larger motifs, nicely made with strapwork of raised trails on halfstitch ground. Excellent technique, note the usual Duchesse motifs. Irregular picoted brides.  Nice presence.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  None.
Damage: Nothing obvious form the photos.
Soilage: Ivory color. “Gently soaked to remove storage dust”
Finish:  No obvious creases, but a little wrinkled.

231474852069   Sold for 195.00 GBP, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/msom4uk Pretty 19C Handmade Rose Point de Gaze Brussels Mixed Lace Wedding Handkerchief
Size: 14″ square
Starting Price: $4.99 with reserve.
Auction ends: February 15, 2015 6:35 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mctiques, Redditch, Winterport, Maine, United States
Comments: A  handkerchief of largely bobbinlace motifs with a Point de Gaze ground. Although there are Point de Gaze rose inserts in the corners – no raised work.  I think this puts this piece more in the Point d’Angleterre category.  Simple leaf and circular flower motifs, not much variation, but an interesting design for this kind of lace.
Provenance:  Maine estate.
Modifications:  None.
Damage: A few small holes and pinholes in the Point de Gaze mesh, especially in the corners..
Soilage: Small localized stains in the cloth. Might be a small brown spot upper right, not sure.
Finish:  No obvious creases or wrinkles.

391050090180   $56.00, 4 bidders, reserve not met.

http://tinyurl.com/mqbadfl Antique Brussels Duchesse Lace Cuffs – 1850 – 1870s

Starting Price: 35.00 GBP
Auction ends: February 15, 2015 6:36 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller supa_troopa, Redditch, Worcestershire, United Kingdom
Comments: A  set of Duchesse de Bruges cuffs.  Typical designs with raised work on the lower corner leaves. Interesting pansy design, a nice change from all those roses.
Provenance:  None cited
Modifications:  None.
Damage: Occasional broken bride.  One bud partially detached on bottom cuff at top right.
Soilage: “Soft ivory color”. “Gently soaked to remove storage dust”
Finish:  No creases, but it does look a slightly shrunken, especially in the raised work.

231474862504   Sold for 35.00 GBP, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/qcyajpp VINTAGE LACE HAND FAN LOVELY (HAND CARVED?) GOOD CONDITION
Size: 23″ wide.
Starting Price: $49.00
Auction ends: February 15, 2015 9:41 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller tookool, South Burlington, Vermont, United States
Comments: A  Chantilly fan with carved and pierced black sticks, might be ebony.  Good romantic floral design, nicely done.  I’ve been keeping records of Ebay sales for year, 56 Chantilly fans since LaceNews started.  16 have mother of pearl sticks, 22 have imitation tortoiseshell, 3 have clear blonde/amber sticks, and 7 have ebony sticks, 3 of which are carved. The rest are unmounted leaves. I thought that was interesting, and helps figure out the rarity of this fan.
Provenance:  Found in the seller’s Aunt’s attic in upper New York State.
Modifications:  None.
Damage: Two small holes in the lace, see the 9th photograph.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish:  Expected fan folds.

281593133469   Sold for $50.50, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/pqjeszk 19th C Mother of Pearl Hand Painted French Lace Leaf Fan
Size: Not given.
Starting Price: 280.00 GBP
Auction ends: February 15, 2015 12:05 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller saraseena, Isleworth, United Kingdom
Comments: A  silk painted fan with Belgian Point de Gaze edge, Mother of Pearl (Abalone) sticks.  The lace looks to have been made to fit the fan, you see this occasionally.  No raised work in the lace, but note the heavy rings used as fillings. Good delicate design appropriate to the piece. I don’t know enough about painted fabric to tell if the painting is hand done, but it looks of good quality.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  None. Comes with a J. Duvelleroy box.
Damage: One broken and detached stick.  Nothing obvious from the photos on the lace.
Soilage: I think I see some small areas of brown spotting in the lace.
Finish:  Expected fan folds.

181662254918   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/pmwu5gk Antique Brussels Duchesse Point De Gaze Floral Lace 116″ L x 11 1/2″ W Bridal
Size: 11.5″ x 112″
Starting Price: $34.99
Auction ends: February 15, 2015 1:20 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller buffalo3, Tonawanda, New York, United States
Comments: A  wide border of Brussels Duchesse.  No raised work in the Point de Gaze inserts – and note how a large flower breaks out of the ground in those inserts.  There is some raised work in the bobbinlace, however the photos have all been taken from the back side, and it’s a little hard to evaluate.  Good design, nicely worked.
Provenance:  Found in an estate.
Modifications: Can’t see ends to tell if they are cut. Engrelure added.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Ecru color, slight darkening at one end.  Seller notes one small dark spot.
Finish:  I see one light vertical fold crease.  Looks unused.

151582949838   Sold for $407.00, 12 bidders.

Size: 13.5″ tall.
Starting Price: $9.99
Auction ends: February 15, 2015 6:30 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller floriedora, Georgetown, Ohio, United States
Comments: A large fan of Brussels Duchesse with carved/pierced and guilded bone? sticks.  No raised work in the Point de Gaze inserts. Original tassel survives. The needlelace inserts are fairly large, overall conventional design, nicely done.  Very elaborate sticks.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications: Lace remounted.
Damage: One broken stick.
Soilage: Lace has been washed and remounted on the sticks – no details given.
Finish:  Expected fan creases.

141571376981   Sold for $27.00, 7 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/kpyep4t VICTORIAN COLLAR WEARABLE LARGE CLUNY LACE FASHION COLLAR MUSEUM DEACCESSION
Size: 18″ neckline, 9.5″ center depth.  24″ x 24″+ when laid flat.
Starting Price: $135.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: February 15, 2015 7:11 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller oldthreads, Franklinville, New York, United States
Comments: A large white silk guipure collar, could be Cluny. This is one of those indeterminate guipure pieces that really needs more documentation.  It has a bold, scrolling design with trefoil heads, lots of raised woven leaves against half-stitch ground.  The leaves are also used in the bride ground, and all are made of blue silk. Very unusual.
Provenance:  Recent deaccession from a New York museum.
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish:  No obvious creases or wrinkles.

371237843366 Unsold as of 2/18/2015, 8:50 PM, MST.

Starting Price: 42.00 EUR
Auction ends: February 16, 2015 11:35 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller bethsalie, paris, Île-de-France, France
Comments: A border of Point de Gaze, no raised work. A slightly vertical floral design, quite effective.  Nicely done decorative ‘mode’ fillings, although not much variation.  I especially like the little buttonholed lines on top of the clothwork in the flowers along the lower border.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications: Ends cut, engrelure added.
Damage: One small repair. Pinholes in the mesh.
Soilage: Ivory color.
Finish:  No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Starting Price: 22.00 EUR
Auction ends: February 16, 2015 11:45 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller bethsalie, paris, Île-de-France, France
Comments: A matching collar and, well, squares of Honiton. I hesitate to call them cuffs, they aren’t a typical size. Perhaps meant as ends to a scarf?  Just the fact that all the pieces match is remarkable.Thistle and rose design with extensive woven tally leadwork fillings. Woven picoted brides in a roughly square pattern. A little snails/slugs in feel, nicely worked.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications: None.
Damage: Some broken/frayed brides and detached fillings.
Soilage: A few localized brown spots.
Finish:  No obvious creases or wrinkles.

141566770816   Sold for 36.09 EUR, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/qf8pub3 93 ins antique/vintage fine Brussels appliqué and point de gaze border
Size: 3.5″ x 93″, in two pieces.
Starting Price: 35.00 EUR
Auction ends: February 16, 2015 11:45 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A narrow border of Brussels bobbin and needlelace applique on machine net.  For something this size it is quite elaborate. Note the circular esprits in the ground, and the finely worked small motifs in a romantic floral design. Single isolated Point de Gaze flowers, and three different decorative ‘mode’ fillings throughout.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications: Cut ends. Engrelure added.
Damage: Frayed and detached slightly from header in places. Several small repairs. Pinholes in the tulle and a few pinholes in the point de gaze fillings.
Soilage: Mid ivory color. Occasional brown spotting.
Finish:  No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Size: 9.75″ long, 17″ wide
Starting Price: 40.00 GBP
Auction ends: February 16, 2015 12:08 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller gertjanvanveghel2009, Rotterdam, Netherlands
Comments: A fan of Point d’Angleterre, meaning bobbin motifs with a Point de Gaze ground.  Blonde imitation tortoiseshell sticks.  Some decorative ‘mode’ needle-made fillings in the central strapwork.  Technique is excellent.  I find the design rather crowded.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications: None.
Damage: Tips of some sticks broken. A few small holes in the mesh throughout.
Soilage: Some brown stains especially along the outer edge.  Some of this might just be the sticks showing through, but there does seem to be staining away from those sites.
Finish:  Expected fan creases.

Size: 3″ x (1 yard 30″, 23″)
Starting Price: $18.99
Auction ends: February 16, 2015 4:11 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller the.lace.place, Spokane, Washington, United States
Comments: Two pieces of a delicate blonde border, probably Blonde de Caen. Note the heavy gimp outlining the design in the points. It’s an interesting study to see how the gimp and heavy silk threads are handled – the design is simple enough that you can see a lot of the thread paths. The light colored background does make the details a little difficult to see.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications: Cut on ends.
Damage: An engrelure would have helped here, damage along the foot edge. Probably a result of removing from a garment.
Soilage: Looks clean, but difficult to see details.
Finish:  No obvious creases, it is a little wrinkled.

Offered by: Ebay seller plesrisld35, Carolina Beach, North Carolina, United States
Comments: These pieces might not have originally been a set, but they are so similar that I’ll review them together.  Irish crochet collar and cuffs with tightly worked motifs, and square picoted mesh. It’s a little hard to see, but the collar might have Clones knots picots, the picots on the cuffs look crocheted.  Raised work in the flower centers and around the edges of some flowers in the collar.  Good motifs of pinwheel flowers, trefoil leaves, and note the flat discs in the cuffs.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious on either from the photos.
Soilage: Look clean.
Finish:  No obvious creases or wrinkles. They do photograph very white.

Comments: A large Irish Crochet collar. Grape and vine leaf design, Rose of Sharon on the inside edge.  The work is quite flat, more of the ‘Irish Crochet as material’ mode.  Nicely worked with square picoted brides.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications: Cut on ends.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruxelles collar with points. Raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze inserts.  Conventional Duchesse motifs with a little raised work on halfstitch ground in the curved motifs.  Rest is a bit on the Bruges side, just gimp outlines.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications: None.

Comments: An Irish Crochet dress front.  I like the padded hanging drop (I think it’s free) center front.  Some interesting motifs, however it has a kind of rough patina that is sometimes associated with cotton threads.
Provenance:  Recent deaccession from a New York museum.
Modifications: None.
Damage: One bride break center right side.
Soilage: Looks like it has a little dirt wear, minor.

Comments: A border of Point de Gaze needlelace formed into a circle. Slightly vertical design, no raised work.  Good decorative ‘mode’ fillings, although not much variation. Romantic Second Empire design.

Modifications: Formed in a circle, although I don’t see the joined. Engrelure added.

Comments: A figural needlelace runner with well-drawn Greek dancing figures, urns/masks in the corners. Hexagonal picoted brides. Almost French in design feel, but I’m unsure where This was made. It does have a Zele feel, but is very elaborate. And although you can’t really see it up close, I think the borders are widely spaced-buttonholed, also a Belgian characteristic. The very elaborate design seems more French, however the technique isn’t fine enough to match the houses like LeFebure known for this type of work. Although I wouldn’t discount this possibility entirely. It’s not Italian Burano – the stitches aren’t right.  But possibly an Italian piece from another manufacturer.
Provenance:  Recent deaccession from a New York museum.
Modifications: None.
Damage: Seller cites ‘three picot bride breaks’.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish:  Light fold creases.

Comments: Two Point de Gaze lappet scarves, so I’ll review them together.  The first has a more elaborate design with what look like Iris or Lillies going up the connecting piece at the ends, and Diamonds with rather elaborate decorative ‘mode’ fillings.  Note the widely spaced single picots along the edge, sing of an unknown manufacturer.  The second has the same form, but not quite as ambitious a design.  Good fillings which vary in size according to position.  These are both excellent examples of the type, and make a nice contrast.
Provenance:  None cited on the first one. From a small lace collection belonging to Christian Maul Anderson (nee Jardin) on the second one.
Modifications: None
Damage: First one: One small hole in the mesh under the roundel on the right.
Second one: Seller cites a couple of tiny repairs.
Soilage: First one:  Localized small brown spots.
Second one:  Seller cites slightly dusty mid ecru color, with occasional pale brown age mark.
Finish:  No obvious creases or wrinkles on either.

Comments: An Irish Crochet dress front with a square mesh picoted ground. Well done motifs of flowers, grapes, leaves, all tightly worked. Lots of raised work in motif centers and sometimes around the edges of petals.  The design is a little asymmetric, but overall quite pleasing.
Provenance:  None cited.

Comments: Valenciennes border, 2nd quarter 18th century. Snowflake and Partridge eye grounds.  Louis XV design, but with a very dense pattern. This kind of lace works very well if you match the two long edges – in fact it looks like you might get a sun pattern surrounded by a circular ring.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications: I can see two cut ends, don’t know about the other two.  Two joins.
Damage: A little worn overall, especially the long edges.  A few small holes.

Comments: A long collar of Rosaline perle – I think the perls are needle-made.  Irregular picoted plaited bride ground, and typical small, elegant motifs. The design in the ends does have a left-right symmetry, but there’s no attempt at organization into a higher level pattern.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications: None. Two partial snaps on the back.
Damage: A few loose threads.

Comments: A deep collar with long front points of Chantilly. Very clean, crisp design. Difficult to guess if it is Belgian or French, but I’ll hazard Belgian.  It’s a very deep black color, French examples tend to be slightly grey due to a finer thread.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications: None.
Damage: A black tulle patch on the right shoulder piece in the photo below.

Comments: A fan of Brussels bobbin and needlelace applique on machine net.  I think the sticks might be bone, but regardless ivory or bone, pay attention to customs regulations in importing something like this.  The sticks are beautifully carved and pierced, perhaps Chinese work.  The lace has a good Romantic floral design with small, well-worked motifs.  Needle-made fillings are fairly simple, and no prominent raised work that I can see.

Modifications: None.

Comments: A Chantilly flounce with a rather vertical design and undulating ribbon along the edge. The pattern elements tend to be mostly small and round, nicely set off by honeycomb stitch. Looks like a racroc line about 1/3rd the way up from the bottom, probably another one farther up.  Circles and 4-leaf buds used as esprits.
Maybe someone can save this from the scissors?
Provenance:  None.
Modifications: Well, it’s going to be cut into yard-long pieces if it hasn’t been already.  Engrelure added.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Modifications: None.

Comments: A tape lace border, very much in the Abruzzi style as shown by Ricci Old Italian Lace, around plate 300. This is a more unusual narrow floral design, but still has the mirror symmetry around a short repeat.  It does have a separate foot edge – usually this is part of the main tape design.  There are also some woven leaf buds near the foot edge, which speaks to a Genoese influence.  Difficult to attribute a date, some have this going back to the 17th century, and probably well through the 19th.  Need a closer examination to make a reasonable guess.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications: Looks cut both ends, although a little hard to tell.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Comments: Two Beds collars, very likely from the Thomas Lester company in Bedford, later 19th century.  The narrower one is the same as a pattern illustrated by Anne Buck on Thomas Lester, page 83.  The wider one has an acorn/oak leaf design.  Note the elaborate ground an neckline treatment in both pieces.  The unique and delicate texture is sue to the use of gimp within the clothwork.

Comments: A Milanese-like tape lace border with plaited, picoted brides with a large but interrupted 6-pointed star pattern.  Difficult to date something like this, but it does resemble some photos in Ricci, like No. 232. But with a freer pattern. That’s dated 17th c. But keep in mind this type of lace was made well into the 19th century.
Provenance:  None cited, but note the blue tags at both ends. This might indicate a previous owner – I’ve got a LaceNews post going on things like this.
Modifications: One end might be finished, the other looks cut.
Damage: A few loose threads on the border, minor.

Comments: Joined Valenciennes round-hole lappets with a lovely line-drawn pattern. Quite a lot of open space which indicates later 18th century.  The picot edge is a later addition, often done in the 19th century to ‘liven up’ older laces.  Hard to tell what might have been lost in that process.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications: Joined in the middle. Overall dimensions are a bit short, so might have lost some at the tops of the lappets.
Damage: Mesh has some minor pulls, but overall good condition.
Soilage: Looks clean.

Comments: A Mechlin border, 3rd quarter 18th century design. Note the typical quatrefoils in the grounds, and also the little 4-sided windows in the clothwork. Each one made is supposed to be a prayer to the Virgin.  Lovely design, well made.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications: Cut ends.  Some of the top border looks like it has a rolled finish, nor sure if it is intact.
Damage: A few small holes and pinholes in the mesh, minor.
Soilage: Looks like there might be a few faint brown spots, minor.

Comments: A plaited bobbinlace border in an early pattern, much like what you find in Parasole, and the closest I could see in Ricci is plate 93.  That example shows the looped picots that you see in this piece.  But I do have some concerns.  Everything looks a little fuzzy, and the whole work isn’t terribly crisp like you tend to see in very early pieces. I also don’t much like the stretching along the lower edge where the pinholes would have been. This would be a good candidate for carbon dating.  Laces like this were extensively copied in the 19th century.  But I admit, the narrow width is a point in its favor.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications: Cut ends.  Two joins.
Damage: A few minor stray threads along the foot edge.
Soilage: I see one small brown spot, rest looks clean.
Finish:  No obvious creases or wrinkles.
