http://tinyurl.com/pjxhohx Stunning long length antique handmade Brussels mixed Point de Gaze lace
Size: 15 cm x 261 cm
Starting Price: 260.00 GBP
Auction ends: Dec 7, 2014, 09:29 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller linskapet, Kirkcudbright, Dumbries & Galloway DG6 4UU, United Kingdom
Comments: I can’t decide whether to call this Brussels Duchesse or Point d’Angleterre. It uses Point de Gaze mesh throughout, like Point d’Angleterre. However there are inserts of pure Point de Gaze (no raised work) motifs like Brussels Duchesse, and the bobbinlace motifs more resemble Duchesse. No decorative ‘mode’ fillings, and the scale of the design looks a bit large for the width of the piece.
Provenance:  From a Scottish country house estate
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut. Engrelure added.
Damage: Seller cites ~ 6 breaks in the ‘net’ ground.
Soilage: Seller says it is “freshly (and VERY carefully) laundered”, but gives no details on the process.
Finish: No obvious creases, it is a bit wrinkled.

http://tinyurl.com/puagx5g Antique hand made bobbin lace on net tulle ground Honiton / Brussels?
Size: 18 cm x 88 cm
Starting Price: 9.00 GBP
Auction ends: Dec 7, 2014, 11:23 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller hedgehogpear, BN8, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. Note the needle-made decorative fillings, which are not seen in Honiton applique. Some of the fillings look like they might be embroidered on the tulle. Hard to tell since the photos don’t enlarge.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Finished on both ends, but I think it’s probably a cut and overcast job.
Damage: A few tiny holes in the tulle.
Soilage: Seller cites ‘a few tiny spot marks’.
Finish: Slight creasing, minor.

http://tinyurl.com/pm8zm34 A Stunning Large Brussels Point De Gaze Wedding Handkerchief
Size: 40 cm x 39 cm
Starting Price: 52.00 GBP
Auction ends: Dec 7, 2014, 11:35 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller winterwonderlandfairy, london, United Kingdom
Comments: This looks like a handkerchief of Brussels needlelace applique on machine net. Comes with a box, but the seller is unsure if it is original.  No raised work, and a few simple knotted fillings. The design is fairly elaborate, but lacks details like esprits, shading, and more fillings.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: A few pinholes in the tulle.  No closeup photos of the edges, but they seem slightly worn in spots.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Some wrinkling of the center cloth.  The needlelace itself has the slightly shrunken look often associated with past washing.  But the tulle looks OK.

Size: 18 cm x 80 cm
Starting Price: 28.00 GBP
Auction ends: Dec 7, 2014, 11:40 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller winterwonderlandfairy, london, United Kingdom
Comments: This is a short section, with an interesting design.  I’ll call it a very good Bruges Bloemwerk – note the little ‘islands’ in the ground, and the flat motifs with gimp and a little raised work.  Nice regular square mesh picoted bride ground. A good example of the type.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: End cut, engrelure added.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester, United Kingdom
Comments: An scarf with ends of Youghal needlelace. There is also a typical Youghal toothed edge running along all sides of the cloth in the scarf.  Altogether an unusual piece with a nicely worked design in the lace.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: A little frayed along the edges, occasional loose thread.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: A little light creasing, minor.

http://tinyurl.com/onuncxm Very Early Antique Handmade Valenciennes/ Binche/ Flemish Lace- Late 1600’s
Size: 4.5″ x 50″
Starting Price: 42.00 GBP
Auction ends: Dec 7, 2014, 12:48 PM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller pbur3053, Worcester, United Kingdom
Comments: A short length of late 17th, early 18th c “Binche”.  Binche is generally a problem for early laces since it was a small industry much in competition with Valenciennes. Val laces developed through several stages, one of which involved grounds of snowflake/partridge eyes. We don’t really know if the same type was made at Binche. However there are a few early pieces with a ‘Binche’ attribution, looking much like this piece – more a guipure design. What the actual truth is remains an excellent subject for research.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut ends, cloth tape added at top.
Damage: Several holes, frayed lower edge.
Soilage: Seller says it is in “freshly laundered and professionally pressed condition” but gives no details on the process.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

http://tinyurl.com/pk3mn36 16th C. Italian Bobbin Lace Narrow Edging  Yardage
Size: 1.5″ x 4 yards
Starting Price: $175.00
Auction ends: Dec 7, 2014, 1:24 PM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A length of plaited bobbinlace, in the style of early pattern books like “Le Pompe”, or the “Nuw Modelbuch” by an author only known as R.M. Getting an absolute date on pieces like this is extremely difficult – you look at the general pattern, and then the wear patterns or ‘patina’ of the linen thread. Very early pieces also tend to be quite tightly woven, and we don’t know much about the finishing processes they may have gone through. Without other information I’d say this looks like an early piece, but I won’t commit to anything definite – and things like this were copied in later years. I’m sending some pieces of my own collection off for carbon dating later this year.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Hard to tell but looks a aged in color.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Starting Price: 4.50 EUR
Auction ends: Dec 8, 2014, 6:12 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller ninou21patch, chez moi, FRANCE, France
Comments: A length of square mesh Valenciennes. Simple floral design, tightly woven, with one free lozenge in the upper mesh per repeat.  Quite precise and elegant looking.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends. A few threads in the mesh, might have been sewn to something at one point. But it does look unused.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites a cream color.  I see a few small brown spots.
Finish: Some vertical fold creases.

Size: 45″ square
Starting Price: 45.00 GPB
Auction ends: Dec 8, 2014, 10:46 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A square veil of embroidered net. The embroidery looks needle-run with some interesting and varied fillings which tend to change in the repeats.  Delicate floral border done in excellent technique – might be a Lierre piece.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage:  Pinholes and several small repairs to the tulle (including some replacement of the net).  Seller counts 11 of these.
Soilage: Seller says “Has been laundered and now a soft old white colour” but gives no details on the process.
Finish: Some fold creases. Hangs beautifully.

http://tinyurl.com/kafbpxl Antique Regency evening dress trim Silver & silk lace. Delicate but adorable!
Size: 3.25″ x 55″
Starting Price: 10.00 GPB
Auction ends: Dec 8, 2014, 10:46 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller poppy1109, Rochester, Kent, United Kingdom
Comments: A fascinating border using silk thread in a point ground along the lower border and ‘fond chant’ or ‘kat stitch’ above.  You see this in both Bucks and Chantilly, however since the clothwork is basically halfstitch, I think this is a French piece. What is amazing is the silver thread used as a gimp. I agree with the early 19th c date.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: One end cut, can’t see the other end. One join.
Damage:  Some major holes, and fraying of the silk thread, especially along the foot side.
Soilage: Occasional brown discoloration of the silk.
Finish: Creased and wrinkled. It’s seen better days.

Starting Price: 10.00 GPB 4 bidders.
Auction ends: Dec 8, 2014, 11:27 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller poppy1109, Rochester, Kent, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of Alençon with réseau fin mesh throughout. The pattern does look late 18th century, but with a slightly freer design than contemporary ‘Herren Alençon’. The motifs are based on thin ribbons, with small areas of decorative ‘mode’ fillings.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends. Engrelure added.
Damage:  Some repairs to the mesh, a few pulls in other places. The motifs look solid.
Soilage: Seller cites two small spots of discoloration, rest is a pale cream color.
Finish: Some light fold creases.

Starting Price: 52.00 GPB
Auction ends: Dec 8, 2014, 11:35 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller winterwonderlandfairy, london, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of Brussels bobbin and needlelace applique on machine net. The needlace runs along the lower edge in a series of large rings, while the bobbinlace is above this. This combination is a little unusual. Small dots used as esprits in the rest of the tulle.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut one end, can’t see the other end.
Damage:  A few pinholes in the tulle. One repair or join in the net, probably part of the manufacturing process.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Some light vertical fold creases.

OK, I’m obviously not finished, but my next door neighbor just got taken by ambulance to the hospital and I have to watch her kids. Will resume when crisis is over.

Comments: Another border of combined Brussels bobbin and needlelace applique on machine net. The needlelace is used to outline the swags and in a single flower in the repeat, rest is a delicate bobbinlace. Note the tiny sprigs used as esprits.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.
Damage:  A few pinholes in the tulle.

Starting Price: 25.00 GPB

Offered by: Ebay seller winterwonderlandfairy, london, United Kingdom
Comments: A Carrickmacross rectangular shawl.  Good romantic floral design with esprits in the upper ground. I do find the motifs a little geometric and slightly plain, and the piece could have used some good needlerun fillings. But overall quite effective. Typical looped picot eges, and a good floral design with some bride cutwork for accents. I especially like the little leaf sprigs used as esprits.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage:  Some pinholes in the tulle.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller dimit0_0, La Chapelle sur Oreuse, France
Comments: A triangular Chantilly shawl, 3rd quarter 19th c. Typical romantic floral design this one including a lot of irises.  Good delicate work, might be a French piece.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage:  A few repairs, see the 7th photo in the listing.  Not sure how many repairs there are, if you look along the edges there are some dark lines that might be repairs, or might just be folds.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: Some fold creases.

Starting Price: $87.00
Auction ends: Dec 8, 2014, 4:08 PM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller aacards4xnd15, Lewiston, Idaho, United States
Comments: I’ve been helping this seller. This is a border of black silk Blonde with a general style and the 6-pointed star fillings often associated with Catalonian blondes. Whether made there or made in France for Spanish export, we can’t be certain. However many such blondes are still being made in Spain today. It’s not a well-documented subject.
This piece seems to have a kind of pineapple design including both whole and halfstitch.
Provenance:  English estate of a woman who was a lacemaker before WWII.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends, engrelure added..
Damage:  Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Starting Price: 19.00 EUR
Auction ends: Dec 9, 2014, 7:57 AM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller gede34, dans mes armoires, France métropolitaine
Comments: I think it’s an Arras point ground piece.  Arras normally has a straight lower edge, so the slight scallop of this piece is puzzling. But Arras can also include the square woven tallies, characteristic of both this lace and Lille. I also note the slightly irregular quality of the thread, which might be linen, and which you also see in this kind of lace. Emil Hannover’s Tønderske Kniplinger (which covers a lot more than Tønder) is a good reference.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends.
Damage:  Worn, holes in the mesh especially along the foot edge.
Soilage: Localized brown stains throughout.
Finish: A little wrinkled.

Comments: A fine Valenciennes border, square mesh. Small motifs, tightly woven. These are a direct descendant of the ‘line drawn’ patterns of 18th c. Val.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends.  One join about halfway down the length.  Difficult to tell because there aren’t any closeups, but I think the lower picot edge might be a later addition.
Damage: Some small holes in the mesh.  Some breaks along the foot edge.
Soilage: General rust stains throughout.

Comments: I’ll put these together since they are so similar. Small round collars of Point de Gaze, no raised work.  The first collar has flared ends, the second is constant width.  Note the curious picot edge on the first collar, it’s a straight line of twisted stitches widely spaced, and I wonder how this feature survived. I think the second collar might have had something similar, but very frayed now.  A few decorated rings in the second collar used as fillings, nothing similar in the first. Neck edge is a bit worn on both. Note the lozenge shapes around the neckline of both collars, they are probably from the same manufacturer.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Some holes in the mesh in the second collar.
Soilage: Both look a little yellowed.
Finish: Second one might have been washed; the lines of the motifs are a little shrunken.

Comments: A deep Irish Crochet collar.  The motifs have the rather elaborate look of French work.  Looks like Clones knots in the picots, and more elaborate knots forming bunches of what might be grapes. All this combined with a rather light ground of horseshoes and three-leaf clovers (which speaks more to an Irish origin). An interesting piece.

Comments: A deep, long flounce of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. The romantic floral/swag design is a fairly simple middle-market type, with a simple needlelace knots used as fillings. Note the round esprits in the ground.
Provenance:  From a collection formed in the early 20th c in Paris.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see ends to tell if it is cut.
Damage: Seller cites a few minor breaks along foot edge.  Overall it looks unused.

Comments: A border of raised venise-type needlelace.  I don’t recognize the type, but I do think it’s Belgian from the widely-spaced buttonhole stitches used in the normal cordonnet.  The little rings forming islands in the brides is also something you see in Bloemwerk, and the spacing in the clothwork also looks Belgian. But Irish or Italian are possibilities.  It has a kind of candelabra design with a little curved raised work in come motifs. Interesting piece.
Provenance:  Comes with a note “Ivory Point, Mrs. C. D. Armstrong” and “Flandre 4 yds” written in another hand.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see ends to tell if it is cut.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Condition:
Modifications: Piece is in the form of a circle – can’t tell if it was modified from a border.

Provenance: None cited.

Comments: These two pieces go together as a set so I’ll review them together. When I first saw the photos I thought Valenciennes de Gand.  However the mesh is indeed a Dieppe ground, and the motifs are more like what you see in fine application. I have seen fine Belgian pieced laces with ground variations, but they are rare and not well documented. It is the type of excellent work we expect out of Ghent. Especially note the elaborate raised work, on half-stitch ground. The designs are impressive, with the narrower flounce a simplified version of the larger one.  I would call these major high-end market pieces; something you are not likely to see again for a very long time.
Provenance: Estate pieces.
Condition:
Modifications: Wider piece: One end cut, the other end looks finished but might just be cut around the motifs.  Engrelure added.
Narrower piece: One end cut, the other looks finished. Engrelure added.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: I think I see a few light brown areas near the top of the ‘finished’ end on the larger piece.  But overall they look quite clean.

Special Ebay Alert! – Collection of Gertrude Whiting

I’m not entirely sure how this happened, and the pieces are being listed by Ebay seller “thecupboardshelf” (http://tinyurl.com/ldwdrsx).  Seller states, “We will be listing a large quantity of lace , lace bobbins and textile fabric sample books from this museum deaccession many lace items from the archive collection of Gertrude Whiting.”  Whiting is famous for her book “Old-Time Tools and Toys of Needlework”, and she also founded the Needle and Bobbin Club.

Most of the listings have a very limited bid time and are disappearing very fast. I do not know what museum is being referred to, although I have suspicions, and have written to the seller asking for more information.

Update – The pieces appear to be from a deaccession by the Fashion Institute of Technology, in New York. Seller says the last of the Whiting items will be listed on Saturday and Sunday.
I recommend that you look at the “Beautiful Bobbins” chapter of Whiting’s book to see if you can match the bobbins up for auction with the photos.  Another source is Whiting’s rarer book “A Lace Guide for Makers and Collectors”, a resource that I really should use more in the Ebay Alerts.  There are bobbins illustrated in the large pullout sheet in this book.
The rigid heddle with Alençon lace threaded through the sticks (http://tinyurl.com/nwno5xr) is illustrated in the book and is also up for auction and just sold. This is the piece that is the origin of all the misinformation leading to these items being labeled as ‘lace measures’. It will now rest happily in my own collection.

On the Internet: Lace Guild Annual Advent Calendar for 2014

This just in from the Lace Guild’s amazing webmaster, David Leader – another great internet display and associated app.  The first of the Advent Calendar pictures will be active on December 1st, with daily updates. There is also a competition in the form of a quiz testing your lace knowledge on various pictures (http://www.laceguild.org/guild/competition.html)

—————————————————————————————————
The Lace Guild’s website will once again be mounting its Advent Calendar (http://www.laceguild.org/guild/calendar.html).

Although this works well on tablets as well as on standard computers, 24 windows are something of a squeeze on a smartphone. So this year we have prepared a phone version of the calendar which you can find at http://www.laceguild.org/phonecal.html.

This has the daily lace picture, although if you want the patterns and wish to enter the competition you will still need to go to the standard version. To compensate we have added a literary dimension to the phone version. (You need to tap somewhere other than the doors to get to it.) We are afraid that there is no turning the clock back – you can only see the picture and the literary quotation for the current day, so if you are interested in this, save a link on your phone and check it each day.

We have tested the site on all iPhones from 3G to 6+, and on several android phones and one Windows phone. As long as you have a recent browser the calendar should work. (We had trouble on an HTC phone until we downloaded a Chrome browser.)

Ebay Alerts! Thirty-six items – November 23, 2014

http://tinyurl.com/nwydz4b Beautiful Antique Long Deep Victorian Lace Flounce – from a C19th Gown – 420 cms
Size: 28 cm x 420 cm
Starting Price: 20.00 GBP
Auction ends: Nov 23, 2014, 06:31 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller supa-troopa, Redditch, Worcestershire, United Kingdom
Comments: A heavy black silk guipure flounce. Recently I bought a small collection of fairly large pieces with a very good Spanish provenance, and this piece is quite similar to those. The motif outlines are fairly thin, and there’s no well defined ground structure. You do see elaborate grounds in Spanish guipures, but sometimes they are left out. And the fillings are a bit more complex than the simple point ground seen in Le Puy guipures. The rather elaborate foot edge also seems typical.
Provenance:  Taken from a Victorian gown.
Condition:
Modifications: Sewn into a circle.
Damage: Broken threads throughout.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with a black lace.
Finish: No obvious creases, it is a bit wrinkled.

231393040947   Sold for 20.00 GBP, 1 bidder.

Auction ends: Nov 23, 2014, 09:15 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller pbur3053, Selkirk, United Kingdom
Comments: A figural tape lace piece, which looks Russian. Certainly the design has a Russian Flair, especially with the headdress. There are quite a few techniques in this small piece. Excellent precise work, quite an effective and well thought out design.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: A little light creasing.

271671831967   Sold for 19.30 GBP, 3 bidders.

Size: 11 cm x 70 cm
Starting Price: 42.00 GBP
Auction ends: Nov 23, 2014, 09:40 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller linskapet, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway DG6 4UU, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. Note the Point de Gaze mesh fillings in some of the motifs, along with a few needle-made rings and knots. Technically well done delicate  floral design. No esprits in the ground.  A higher end market piece.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.
Damage: A little frayed in places along the header edge. Occasional small localized hole in the tulle along the foot edge
Soilage: I love the way the seller has referred to color #264 (Oxford Stone) on the Farrow & Ball color chart.  I’ll have to look into that.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

191415500454   Sold for 42.00 GBP, 2 bidders.

Starting Price: 46.00 GBP
Auction ends: Nov 23, 2014, 11:15 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller pbur3053, Selkirk, United Kingdom
Comments: A small square tablecloth with a needlelace border. I think it’s Belgian. There’s some Point de Gaze mesh used a a filling, and the raised edges have widely spaced buttonhole stitches much like Point de Gaze.  Interesting designs, good technique.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Some broken brides.
Soilage: Seller says it is in ‘freshly laundered and professionally pressed condition’. No details on the laundering process.
Finish: Horizontal and vertical fold creases.  Unfortunately there’s no photo of the whole thing.

271671974580   Sold for 46.00 GBP, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/ocfrphe Antique Hand Done ENGLISH HONITON Bobbin LACE TRIM Flounce~Victorian 4×50 Floral
Size: 4″ x 50″
Starting Price: $89.00
Auction ends: Nov 23, 2014, 5:35 PM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller countryliving, Auburn, Pennsylvania, United States
Comments: A Honiton border that is interesting, although the design is fairly messy. It have a variety of atypical motifs with some nice raised work, and several types of plaited leadworks in the fillings.  Plaited, irregular picoted brides sometimes meeting in ‘islands’. It is rather far off the typical Honiton style, but it does have Honiton techniques. But still I’m wondering about origin.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: One end looks finished, can’t see the other end..
Damage: Some broken brides and holes.
Soilage: Seller says it has ‘a few dots’.
Finish: No obvious creases, slightly wrinkled.

Offered by: Ebay seller lovevictorian, Alexandria, Virginia, United States
Comments: An Irish Crochet triangular dress front with attached choker neckpiece.  Raised work in padded rings and rose leaves. Rather geometric design to the motifs, although a little ordinary in technique.  It’s unusual to find a matched pair like this.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

http://tinyurl.com/kz2kuby ORIGINAL 19thC MOTHER OF PEARL & BRUSSELS LACE FAN
Size: 14.5″ high, 26.5″ wide
Starting Price: AU $19.99
Auction ends: Nov 24, 2014, 2:15 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller osxlanda, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
Comments: There aren’t any closeup photos of the lace, but I’m fairly certain it is Belgian Point d’Angleterre. Meaning delicate bobbinlace motifs with a Point de Gaze ground. The lower central flower appears to be needle-made.   Mother of Pearl sticks.
I’m wondering if this is the correct photo for the piece, since the seller says there is a carved and inlaid frame (I think that means the sticks), and that the lace is discolored along the ‘frame’ and backed with chiffon. I don’t see this in the photos.  I wrote to the seller to ask for clarification.
11/23/14 – Seller has ended the listing and will get things straightened out.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Expected fan creases.

Offered by: Ebay seller socios22-2009, Castelar, default, Argentina
Comments: A fan of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net, with Mother of Pearl gilded sticks.  Good romantic design that really pops out at the viewer – nice technique. A few simple needlelace rings used as decorative ‘mode’ fillings.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None, although I’m not sure why the lace is glued to the same side of the guard sticks on both ends.
Damage: Sticks repaired in several places. The lace is a bit frayed along the outer edge in places. Tulle looks intact.
Soilage: Lace looks like it might be stained where glued to the sticks.
Finish: Expected fan folds.  Lace does not look well attached to the guard sticks.

Offered by: Ebay seller socios22-2009, Castelar, default, Argentina
Comments: A fan of Duchesse de Bruxelles. Needlelace inserts are limited to single roses with no Point de Gaze ground.  Note the elaborately pierced and gilded sticks, and the original tassel.  Good raised work in the bobbinlace against halfstitch background. No raised work n the needlelace which includes simple rings and knots as decorative ‘mode’ fillings.  Good dense floral design, quite typical of this kind of lace.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: One repaired guard stick.
Soilage: Some brown stains in the lace, especially on the left side.  Seems almost corresponding to the position of the ribs, but not exactly.
Finish: Expected fan creases.

Starting Price: $70.00
Auction ends: Nov 24, 2014, 8:41 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller atelier1900, Galliard, France
Comments: A single lappet of 3rd quarter 18th c round hole Valenciennes.  Just wish the other one was there. This is one of my favorite laces, with beautiful ‘line drawn’ solid motifs. This particular example has 1-1/2 repeat of the design – in the highest form of this lace there would probably be no repeat.  Still it’s an excellent example of the type.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Top end cut.
Damage: One small hole.  Mesh looks in good shape. Slightly frayed along edges, especially at the round end.
Soilage: A few small brown stains.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Auction ends: Nov 24, 2014, 11:01 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller sirjle, Paris, France
Comments: A moderately wide flounce of Point de Gaze, no raised work. Excellent naturalistic romantic design – this is a high-end market piece. Well done decorative ‘mode’ fillings, very appropriate to the work. Upper ground is dotted with esprits.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut one end, can’t see the other end. Engrelure added.
Damage: One large hole in the mesh near left end. Some small holes, see seller’s description for locations.
Soilage: Cream color.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller sirjle, Paris, France
Comments: Four sections of the same length of Point de Gaze. No raised work, simple fillings, and a very effective short repeat design.  It has a kind of verticality of the pattern which is good for ruffling.  Again, a very effective lace.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut on all ends – one short length sewn in a ring, probably for a cuff.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites a few orange dots.
Finish: Some vertical fold creases.

Offered by: Ebay seller sirjle, Paris, France
Comments: A narrow border of 2nd Empire Alençon, quite a bold design, although fairly simple in concept. Picoted rings and bars used as decorative ‘mode’ fillings. Réseau fin, which tends not to survive well, so this is a nice piece for condition. Note the horsehair left in the lines of picots.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: One end cut, the other looks intact. Engrelure added.
Damage: Occasional small hole in the mesh, minor.
Soilage: Seller cites a few orange dots.
Finish: No obvious creases, a little wrinkled in the engrelure area.

Size: 3″ x 60″
Starting Price: EUR 65.00
Auction ends: Nov 24, 2014, 11:10 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller sirjle, Paris, France
Comments: A border of late 18th c Alençon, quite delicately made.  Réseau fin along the lower edge, and it looks like brides tortillée in the upper part.  The motifs are quite sparse and delicate, with decorative ‘rempli’ patterns used as fillings. A few single buttonhole rings also used as fillings.  Note seller is also listing two other Alençon pieces, #331385160746  and #331385239817.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Ends cut.
Damage: There is evidence of a few repairs, and what looks like a join at regular intervals – this I think was part of the manufacturing process. A few pulls and pinholes in the mesh.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: One vertical fold crease that I can see.  The piece lies flat quite nicely.

Comments: A cap back of 2nd quarter 18th c Valenciennes with cinq trou ground. Cap back of Valenciennes are extremely rare, and this is an excellent example.  Good line-drawn design with some snowflake and quatrefoil fillings.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: A few small wear holes in the clothwork
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: One vertical fold crease.  The edges are a bit scalloped, I think from having been sewn to something. Hopefully an original ruffle.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse dress front with attached choker collar.  Raised rose petals in the Point de Gaze inserts; no decorative ‘mode’ filings outside of flower centers. A little raised work on halfstitch background in the bobbinlace – conventional motifs.  Nice set kept together, hard to say if the pieces match.

Comments: Quite a long border, looks like point ground, and I think Lille rather than Bucks. The ground itself is a little irregular, due to the quality of thread which isn’t even throughout.  Honeycomb fillings and small, almost geometric buds used as esprits.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:

Comments: A narrow scarf of Chantilly with ombre shading, could be a French product. Large floral design at the ends with sprays of leaves along the length of the scarf with circular esprits. An unusual interesting piece.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None, but I’m a bit concerned that I can’t see the center of the scarf in the photos.

Comments: A handkerchief of Duchesse de Bruxelles, and I don’t think the petals in the roses in the Point de Gaze inserts are raised. Rather large corner PtdG inserts. The only raised work in the Duchesse is some veining.  A few simple needlelace decorative ‘mode’ fillings. Altogether the piece has a very nice presence and good technique.

Comments: A narrow rectangular scarf of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. Regular rows of esprits throughout.
Provenance:  None cited.

Comments: A border of what looks like Honiton, although it is not what you might expect. The woven tally leadworks are there, along with rose and flower motifs, and irregular picoted brides.  But the clothwork in the flowers and leaves has a row of twisted passives down the centers. All this gives this quite an interesting appearance. Just wish the piece were a little more intact.

Offered by: Ebay seller countryliving, Auburn, Pennsylvania, United States
Comments: A border of piece bobbinlace with droschel ground. This type of ground didn’t appear until the 2nd quarter of the 18th century, and I’d put this one more mid 18thc with a typical Louis XV design. Hard to say if it is English Devon or a Flemish piece, but I’m thinking more on the Flemish side.  The ground is very precisely done, quite straight, and the fillings are a bit more varied than what you find in England at this time.  Still, the general scale and design of the piece, adna the treatment of the raised edges looks a little more English.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.  Engrelure added.
Damage: A few small pulls in the ground, and some breaks in a few fillings. I think I see one repair to the mesh.
Soilage: A little beige from the last photo.
Finish: Creases from storage.

Size:  cap 12″ deep, lappets 5.5″ max width. 40″ total length.
Starting Price: $135.00
Auction ends: Nov 26, 2014, 5:16 PM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A fallcap of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net.  Smaller precise pieces like this are unusual.  The design motifs are fairly simple, but put together in a complex way.  The center has a loose grouping of flowers and leaves, and the border a rather rigid arrangement of a single flower alternating with a kind of teardrop motif.  Esprits all over the rest of the ground. There is also a line of small flowers going down the lappets.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Ivory/ecru color. Seller cites some slight staining or discoloration.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Size:  5.5″ x 3-1/2 yards
Starting Price: $235.00
Auction ends: Nov 26, 2014, 5:46 PM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A border in the style of Gros Point, but I think this one is Belgian. The decorative ‘mode’ fillings have a Belgian feel, and note that the ordinary edges look like a heavy cord buttonholed on with widely spaced stitches.  The clothwork is a single buttonhole with straight return, like Point de Gaze, but denser. If this were French or Italian I think they’d have used a twisted buttonhole. The heavy padded outlines are sometimes sculpted, with looped picots. The brides have a single pointed picot.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are  cut.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Ivory/ecru color.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

http://tinyurl.com/k9tk8vh Antique French Irish Crochet Parasol Cover
Size: 20″-20.5″ diameter. Center hole ~3/8″ diameter.
Starting Price: $145.00
Auction ends: Nov 27, 2014, 9:05 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A small parasol cover if Irish Crochet.  The contrast of heavy motifs around the outside edge with  more regular light pattern inside is something often found in large IC collars.  The tightly worked large motifs with raised wrok in atypical patterns do look French, and the pattern on the inside is different from the usually seen ‘Rose of Sharon’ pattern.  This is not a lace that lends itself well to a parasol cover, and this general design is nicely arranged to help minimize the bulkiness of the lace.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Ivory white color. Seller says it has been freshly washed, but gives no details on the process.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Starting Price: $145.00
Auction ends: Nov 27, 2014, 10:42 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A deep Irish Crochet collar.  Irish Crochet is almost always build off of a motif that has three stalks ending in flowerheads – you can see that here with occasional modification. The motifs are tightly worked, and the flower petals always go clockwise around their center point.  Some raised work at the flower centers.  A bold piece, excellent technical work.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Pale ivory color
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse deep collar with raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze inserts.  The Duchesse looks a little large and flat, on the Bruges side, but still with good raised work on halfstitch background.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Some small holes and pinholes in the Point de Gaze mesh. One motif along edge looks like it needs reattachment, minor.
Soilage: Looks clean.

Comments: A large Paraguayan ñanduti tablecover or perhaps a veil, one of the largest pieces I’ve ever seen. It’s almost a patchwork, you can see where large squares and rectangles are pieced together. Not much variation in the sol motifs, but note the elaborate grounds and joining strips.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Seller cites a few separations in the lace and some loose threads.
Soilage: Seller says it is recently laundered, but gives no details on the process. Some minor discoloration left.
Finish: No obvious creases or folds.

Comments: A triangular Brussels Duchesse dress insert with raised petal rose in the Point de Gaze insert. The two cuffs are more Duchesse de Bruges, and I”m not sure they match the insert, which is more elaborate in design. Coventional Duchesse pattern in the insert with a nice reflection around the center line.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller says it is has been laundered but gives no specifics on the process. Now a ‘soft old white’ color.
Finish: No obvious creasing or wrinkles.

Comments: A Chantilly fan with carved imitation tortoiseshell sticks. I think it’s Chantilly, there aren’t any detailed closeups. Comes with a box labeled L. Ranze-Dossaer & Co, Fabrique de Dentelles, which I don’t recognize.  Nice curved design with floral sprays inside a rather geometric border. Wish there were some closeups.
