Starting Price: 70.00 GBP
Auction ends: Feb 09, 2014 10:05:33 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: An Irish Crochet shawl collar. Extensive padded raised work often edged with picots. Picots in ground look like crocheted loops.  Good, tight work.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller washed the piece, now soft white color with some faint brown discoloration.

231150033388   No bids.

Starting Price: 5.00 GBP
Auction ends: Feb 09, 2014 10:06:42 PST

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges border, with a few simple needlelace ‘mode’ fillings in flower centers. Standard Duchesse motifs, plaited brides with no picots.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean

310856491433   Sold for 36.00 GBP, 10 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/mrz8eul Fine broder of Brussels needlepoint lace grounded with bobbin-made drochel net;
Size: 2-3/4″ x 29.5″
Starting Price: 34.99 GBP
Auction ends: Feb 09, 2014 10:11:48 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller 999dogtoby, Bath, United Kingdom
Comments: Segment of a border of Brussels needlelace with droschel ground. It has the very light look of the later 18th century. Needlelace motifs with the droschel ground doesn’t come up all that often.  I like the design – the technique of the motifs is a little ‘spidery’, but appropriate to the piece.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Engrelure added, cut both ends.
Damage: A few small repairs to the ground, occasional loose threads.
Soilage: Looks clean from the photos.

291071446753   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/mvx8k7k Flounce of 18th century Flemish bobbin lace
Size: 8.5″ x 71″
Starting Price: 79.99 GBP
Auction ends: Feb 09, 2014 11:30:26 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller 999dogtoby, Bath, United Kingdom
Comments: A moderately wide Flemish border, probably on the earlier side of the 18th c. Not enough closeups to tell how the ground was made, but it is fitted around the motifs. Threads pass in back of the motifs – a Flemish characteristic.  Good flowing design and from what I can see it looks intact.
Provenance:  Seller suspects past church use, Note the red cross at one end of the mounting tape.
Condition:
Modifications: Mounting tape added, cut both ends.  Plaited Heading added separately.
Damage: Areas of the ground have been repaired or replaced.  Occasional small hole.
Soilage: Looks like a beige color, consistent with age, no obvious spots in the photos.

291071515287   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/mcmcpno Late 19th – early 20th century Honiton bobbin lace collar
Size: 26″ length of each side, 6.5″ center back depth
Starting Price: 59.99 GBP
Auction ends: Feb 09, 2014 12:20:34 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller 999dogtoby, Bath, United Kingdom
Comments: A large collar of Honiton. Note the elaborate neckline border. Well out of the snail/slugs style, yet not quite as sophisticated as some later 19th c pieces.  The design is a bit scattered, like the English flower garden (some say the Devon hedge rows) so typical of Honiton. Picoted plaited bobbin ground.  Note the half-stitch in the roses on the outer border, seller indicates this is a later 19th c technique.
Provenance:  None cited. Seller is a well-known author and very knowledgeable.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Occasional broken thread
Soilage: Uniform soft white color.

291071564836   Sold for 67.00 GBP, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/kmyylfs Silk bobbin-lace scarf or tie – late 19th – early 20th century
Size: 4.75″ x 3 feet 10″
Starting Price: 8.99 GBP
Auction ends: Feb 09, 2014 14:53:51 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller 999dogtoby, Bath, United Kingdom
Comments: A narrow scarf of cream silk bobbinlace. People look at something like this and think either Beds or Maltese, but it is more likely a French product. Might be a Le Puy area variant.  Good bold design, note the raised leaves on halfstitch ground.  This type is not well documented.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Some localized fraying and broken thread especially along the outside border.
Soilage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

291071681391   No bids.

Size: 8 cm x 210 cm
Starting Price: 19,00 EUR
Auction ends: Feb 09, 2014 19:08:41 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller gede34, Dans mes armoires, France métropolitaine
Comments: A Mechlin border, very light and delicate.  Late 18th, early 19th c, although not really 1st Empire. maybe a little later. Sort of a curved design with sprigs used as esprits in the ground. If you are having trouble seeing this listing, google Ebay France and copy the title into the search space.
Provenance:  None cites.
Condition:
Modifications: Ends looks finished. Engrelure along foot edge.
Damage: Occasional pinholes
Soilage: A little soft and worn.  A few brown spots.

261387391423   Sold for 39.00 EUR, 7 bidders.

Size: 40″ square
Starting Price: $100.00 GBP
Auction ends: Feb 09, 2014 19:08:41 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller bene167, Alexandria, Virginia, United States
Comments: A square shawl or cover of Maltese (from Malta) cream silk bobbinlace. Typical construction of narrow bands sewn together.  Primarily Maltese cross and sun motifs alternate, and note the masses of woven leaves in the ground.  Good, bold design, typical of late 19th or 20th c work.  This seller has listed a number of good application pieces.
Provenance:  None cites.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean – I think the discontinuity on the lefthand mid section is just a fold. Hopefully.

Starting Price: $69.99 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: Feb 10, 2014 08:13:43 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller seltmeister, Simmerath, Germany
Comments: A segment of a border of Bruges Bloemwerk.  Double picoted brides, and a good bold presence.  Interesting provenance.  Just wish there were more.  Seller has several other pieces from the same ‘estate’.
Provenance:  From the Estate of Queen Fabiola, who is still alive so not sure what to make of this.
Note: An astute LaceNews reader thinks that this is from the estate of the Queen’s lacemaker, and on a second look, that seems correct.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are intact.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean

Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are intact.  Cut into two pieces.
Damage: A number of small holes.

Condition:
Modifications: One end cut, can’t see the other end.
Damage: A few small holes, one repair along top.  A little frayed in places along the top.

Comments: This is the week for good early Mechlin. Here is a border with snowflake ground, also some quatrefoil elements without gimp.  Good design, mostly appreciated from a distance. Closeup it’s a little blocky, little decoration in the clothwork, but actually quite good.

Comments: A wide Chantilly flounce. Work looks rather delicate, might be a French piece. No esprits in the upper ground, could be a slightly later 19th c piece.
Provenance:  From the collection of the seller’s mother, sculptress and author Zena Garrett.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see ends to tell if they are cut.

Comments: A point ground border, perhaps Bucks? Might also be Lille.  I’m rather inclined toward the French.  Well worked, small, delicate design. Note the rather large sprigs used as esprits, but they match the design well.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: One end cut, can’t see the other one.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: This arrangement of a center shaped collar with a plaited bobbinlace frill is not uncommon in Beds lace.  This one has simple patterns of trails, woven leaves and a diamond shaped motif with raised tallies.  The particular shaped form is a bit unusual.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Small covered button with loop for closure
Damage: Some loose threads on one point end.

Starting Price: 9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Feb 13, 2014 12:00:45 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller baraud, Newton Abbot, United Kingdom
Comments: An impressive Mechlin piece, ~1740. Mechlin experimented a lot with grounds before settling down on the fond de glas.  This is a transitional piece with a kind of enclosed snowflake ground that I’ve never seen before.  The form is puzzling, perhaps two sleeve flounces joined together? Photos aren’t detailed enough to tell if the upper edge has been cut in places.  A fascinating lace, some of the better early Mechlin that I’ve seen recently.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: One join in the center, ends are additions.
Damage: Looks good from the photos, surprisingly good.
Soilage: Cream colored, occasional small brown spot.

Condition:
Modifications: None

There is a contest associated with the convention, which will be the subject of a separate post.  This post will be updated as more information becomes available.
