Ebay Alerts – Eighteen items – January 5, 2014

http://tinyurl.com/pl32ejw Antique/vintage ivory tambour lace wedding veil
Size:  70″ square
Starting Price: 150.00 GBP
Auction ends: Jan 05, 2014 12:03:47 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A square veil or shawl of tambour embroidery on machine net. Nicely worked with both heavy and lighter shading stitches. Work like this is sometimes ascribed to Belgium.  Seller notes that the density of the embroidery makes the piece a bit heavy, but it looks like it hangs well on the manikin.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Seller cites occasional small hole and several small repairs.
Soilage:  Looks clean from the photos.

331096287645   Sold for 289.00 GBP, 5 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/oskxyzp Late 17th century Venetian rose point lace border
Size:  3.5″ (excluding engrelure) x 51″
Starting Price: 69.99 GBP
Auction ends: Jan 05, 2014 12:45:52 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller 999dogtoby, Bath, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of Gros Point needlelace. The lack of continuity in the design indicates reassembly at a later date. As far as actual age goes, there is a lot of debate presently about the early attribution of pieces like this, and the reassembly be a point in its favor for an early date. The clothwork is quite plain with a good cold-press patina, and there are a few simple fillings. Some of the cordonet work is well sculpted, some looks a little unrefined, and the centering of some rings almost looks like they were added later. The motif designs are a bit blocky, and the brides are as expected, but could have been added later. Overall I’m not willing to make a definite early date on this piece – parts look early, but there’s been reworking along with the reassembly.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Reassembled in the 19th century.
Damage: A few broken and missing brides
Soilage:  Overall age patina.

291048173077   Sold for 87.00 GBP, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/ooynejb Irish Crochet collar
Size:  18″ x 12″
Starting Price: 24.99 GBP
Auction ends: Jan 05, 2014 13:05:00 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller 999dogtoby, Bath, United Kingdom
Comments: An Irish Crochet collar or dress front. Large, raised motifs along the edges with a lighter ‘rose of Sharon’ pattern inside.  Overall quite effective design.  The picots look like crocheted loops.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: One or two broken threads, minor.
Soilage:  Even soft white color accordng to the seller.

291046866849   Sold for 38.00 GBP, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/orqr39w Honiton bobbin lace collar
Size:  11.5″ x 17.5″, 8″ neckline
Starting Price: 17.99 GBP
Auction ends: Jan 05, 2014 13:16:43 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller 999dogtoby, Bath, United Kingdom
Comments: A Honiton collar with needle-made ground, which puts this into the Honiton Point category.  A little snails/slugs  style, with nicely made roses and thistles, good symmetry to the design.  The ‘lily of the valley’ flowers are unusual.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage:  Hard to tell, but looks basically clean in the photos.

291048190337   Sold for 17.99 GBP, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/nmbhxay Bobbin lace baby’s bonnet
Size:  13″ front opening, 5″ depth of main panel, back 5.5″ x 4.5″
Starting Price: 12.99 GBP
Auction ends: Jan 06, 2014 02:03:51 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller 999dogtoby, Bath, United Kingdom
Comments: A small baby’s cap of guipure bobbinlace, probably a Cluny type. As the seller points out, the thread is a little heavier than found in Beds.  Good floral design for the type, with raised tallies.  Unusual to see a piece like this.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: A few breaks in the edging.
Soilage:  Looks clean from the photos.

291048469853   Sold for 32.00 GBP, 5 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/qfmabdj Antique Honiton lace bonnet veil/flounce
Size:  16″ x 1.4 meters
Starting Price: 8.98 GBP
Auction ends: Jan 06, 2014 07:34:53 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller kinkerjew, Glos, United Kingdom
Comments: Honiton applique on machine net, probably a flounce. There aren’t many photos so I can’t tell the condition of the top and side edges.  The motifs are typical of this lace, quite large, with a chain of flowers on the edge, scattered sprigs in the upper ground.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t tell.
Damage: Photos look good,  and seller does not note defects.
Soilage:  Looks clean from what I can see.

261366840525   Sold for 18.89 GBP, 6 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/nmm7q79 Pretty antique/vintage crochet lace collar and cuffs
Size:  collar: neckline 14″, max depth 5.5″. cuffs: 4″ x 10″
Starting Price: 19.95 GBP
Auction ends: Jan 06, 2014 09:58:15 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: Irish crochet collar and cuffs, which match.  Note the seller’s comment, that they are quite loosely worked and floppy.  Probably a result of the kind of thread used, or more of an amateur effort. You also see this in silk Irish crochet, but I don’t think that’s the case here, despite the many raised rings which are a mark of silk work. The motifs are interesting, the rings well done, and it has the kind of geometric look that is sometimes found in IC.  Probably a later work.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage:  Looks clean.

231126340613   Sold for 26.00 GBP, 2 bidders.

Size:  11.5″ long
Starting Price: $74.99
Auction ends: Jan 06, 2014 15:15:48 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller betsycrnfa, Mesa, Arizona, United States
Comments: Fan with Mother of Pearl (probably Abalone) pierced sticks.  Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. A few needlelace accents in the fillings, and small rings used as ‘esprits’. The motifs are typical for this lace.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None, note stick replacements.
Damage: Seller says he/she has repaired a few areas – not sure what that means.  6 of the 14 ribs have been replaced with almost identical ones.  I see a few repairs to the net, and occasional pinhole in the tulle.
Soilage:  Looks clean.

400635535701   Sold for $307.55, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/o64p5e6 BEST finest early hand made lace collar with daffodils Brussels Point de Gaze
Size:  25″ x 4.5″ to 2.75″
Starting Price: $24.99
Auction ends: Jan 06, 2014 17:40:04 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller impeeryus, West Brookfield, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: A Point de Gaze collar, no raised work/  The ‘daffodil’ motif is quite effective, especially with the heavy ring chains around the trumpet openings.  I also like the very broad edge motif, rather architectural. Nice contrast with the lighter neckedge motifs.
Provenance:  None cited
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Tiny break in the edge, minor.
Soilage:  Light soiling, especially around the back neckline.

Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: Two pieces of Carrickmacross guipure.  A better quality piece, note the spiky picots on the brides, and the excellent quality cutwork. Not looped edge.  Nice design.
Provenance:  None cited
Condition:
Modifications: Cut into two pieces.  Remnants of cloth at the top.
Damage: A little frayed in some of the cutwork, minor.
Soilage:  A little dusty.

Size: 4″ x 51″
Starting Price: $99.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: Jan 07, 2014 11:34 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, United States
Comments: A fairly narrow Maltese border with teardrop/heart designs (hopefully I’ll be able to take the Maltese class at OIDFA this year and get more insight into this lace). Fillings alternate between Maltese cross and a mat of woven leaves.  This is a common design for borders in this lace.
Provenance:  None cited
Condition:
Modifications: Cut on ends.
Damage: Mild fraying along cut ends, a few scraggly threads.
Soilage:  Seller cites age discoloration and some very light spots.

Size: 5.5″ x 68″
Starting Price: $30.00
Auction ends: Jan 07, 2014 11:45:44 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester, United Kingdom
Comments: An Italian tape lace very much in the Abruzzi style. The passives are white, the weavers and edge threads are pale yellow silk. Another piece of this was sold a few months ago. Probably a 19th c piece.
Provenance:  None cited
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends so can’t tell how they are treated.
Damage: A few frayed threads, see last photo.
Soilage:  No discoloration that I can see.

http://tinyurl.com/nhlza3o * Antique BRANSCOMBE LACE Parasol Cover – Unused *
Size: 22-23″ diameter
Starting Price: $35.00
Auction ends: Jan 07, 2014 11:53:44 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester, United Kingdom
Comments: A mixed tape parasol cover, could be English Branscombe. The raised ribs on the spider wheels are found in this lace, however I don’t see any of the typical looped brides, and the outer edge is also atypical. But I think the design and work are close enough for this attribution. Large pieces like this do come up occasionally.
Provenance:  None cited
Condition:
Modifications: none
Damage: A few frayed threads, see last photo.
Soilage:  Looks good from the photos

161183891859   Sold for $117.50, 5 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/pgqzmfq Attractive Antique {1800s} Carved FAux Ivory Folding Lace Parasol-SANGSTERS
Size: 22-23″ diameter
Starting Price: $35.00
Auction ends: Jan 07, 2014 11:53:44 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester, United Kingdom
Comments: A parasol with Irish Crochet shade. Normally you’d think this lace would be too heavy for a parasol, however the work here is quite light, resembling the earlier more textile-related patterns. The edges are scalloped, but it’s hard to tell exactly how the cover was constructed. The lace is lined with black silk, and there’s a cream silk inner lining.
Provenance:  Handle stamped ‘Sangsters’.
Condition:
Modifications: none
Damage: Nothing obvious from photos.
Soilage:  Some stains along the fold marks.

310833783723   Sold for 129.00 GBP, 9 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/psbe5u3 BEAUTIFUL LENGTH OF SUPERB ANTIQUE ENGLISH HONITON BOBBIN LACE ca. 1850
Size: 6″ x 68″
Starting Price: $220.00
Auction ends: Jan 08, 2014 06:17:23 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller palexpo, Steinhausen, Switzerland
Comments: A Honiton Point flounce, needle-made ground. The motifs have some raised work, with typical roses, thistles, and I think Oak leaf motifs. Rather on the snails/slugs style side, and I think it’s a later 19th c piece.  it has a nice presence.  The foot edge treatment is a bit unusual, not easy to sew this to something along that edge.
Provenance:  None cited
Condition:
Modifications: At least one end cut, can’t see the other end.
Damage: Nothing obvious from photos.
Soilage:  Pale cream color.

Starting Price: 45.00 GBP
Auction ends: Jan 08, 2014 12:13:45 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller gertjanvanveghel2009, Rotterdam, Netherlands
Comments: A Duchesse de Bruxelles fan with Mother of Pearl (Abalone) inlaid sticks. The needlelace in this lace consists of some decorative ring fillings, in rows and as a grid, and also a single flower without mesh ground in the center. Quite an effective design. Typical Duchesse motifs with raised work on halfstitch ground.
Provenance:  None cited
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Some silver leaf missing on the sticks.  Some sticks have repairs.  Nothing obvious on the lace.
Soilage:  A few tiny brown spots in the lace.

Offered by: Ebay seller slavart, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States
Comments: A very interesting piece, with metallic and other embroidery on the cap. I don’t recognize this point ground lace border in the context of Slovakian lace – it looks more like a Lille design. Still, something like this doesn’t come up very often, and it is beautifully made and quite impressive looking.
Provenance:  Made in Drahovce, Slovakia or one of the surrounding village northeast of Trnava.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Frayed threads, some repairs.obvious on the lace.
Soilage:  A little yellowed on the lace.

Offered by: Ebay seller twist-in-time, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States
Comments: A narrow, long length of Point de Gaze, no rased work. The design is rather architectural, and note the single looped picots along the edge. That’s the sign of a manufacturer, name lost. Some heavy rings used as decorative modes in hexagonal cartouches n the repeats.  Interesting design. Seller has listed 2 other similar bonnets, #360817136104 and 360817135162.

Apologies yet again, I’ve got some deadlines on contract work that are interfering with my lace work – will resume Sunday. In fact I might just do the alerts only on Sundays in the immediate future.

Starting Price: 10.00 EUR
Auction ends: Dec 30, 2013 11:04:06 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller maison3.14, languedoc roussillon, France
Comments: A flounce of heavy black silk Le Puy guipure.  Note the ‘spider-like’ ground, and Le Puy is known for this kind of experimentation.  The cloth stitch motifs on point ground backgrounds is also very typical of this lace, along with motifs encased in narrow borders. The design in this piece has a short repeat with rather rounded motifs.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if it is cut.
Damage: One snag along upper border, not sure I’d even call it damage.
Soilage:  Difficult to tell from black color, but nothing obvious from the photos.

Comments: A dress front of Maltese. Note the extensive woven leaf ground with one full Maltese cross guipure medallion, half medallions on the ends. The border alternates between cross and flower motifs.  A large amount of regular woven ground like this is a difficult thing to handle design-wise.
Provenance:  None cited.

Comments: A collar or dress front with long points and attached neckpiece. Duchesse de Bruxelles, although the neckpiece doesn’t seem to have any needlelace accents.  Note the unusual upright flowers in the neckpiece. The main collar is well done with Point de Gaze elements and fillings primarily around the neckline – down the points they widen out and the fillings become very elaborate. One large raised petal rose at each end, and note the heavy needlemade accents around the centers of some flowers.  Some of the bobbinlace motifs are a little unusual for this kind of lace, very well done, and the design is quite dense. Altogether it looks very effective.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None, although neckpiece is a separate attachment and might not be original to the set.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage:  Maybe a bit of a cream color.

Comments: A collar of Point de Gaze needlelace, no raised work.  Interesting, more modern design with what look like pansies.  Decorative ‘mode’ filings consist of single heavy rings in small spaces.  It has a rather flat, modern look, fairly unusual.

Modifications: None
Damage: a few small holes in the mesh, esp. on the right side.

Comments: A narrow scarf of Duchesse de Bruges.  It has a series of oval cartouches filled with flowers and leaves down the length of the scarf, with a large massed leaf arrangement with some terminating flowers at the ends. Note the simple toothed edge around most of the outside. The motifs are fairly simple with a little raised veining, but mostly just a gimp outline. Good technique and the design is typical of the type.
Provenance:  From a local estate.

Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage:  Looks quite clean in the photos.

Comments: A lappet scarf of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. Small motifs, highly floral design, a few small needlelace rings as accents. This is a lace that doesn’t come up too often in the small piece format, and this is a good example.
Provenance:  From a local estate.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: One small hole in the tulle at the center joining segment.
Soilage:  Nothing obvious from the photos.

Comments: A Duchesse collar with a kind of key design. Good raised work, no needlelace accents. Sometimes we call this Duchesse de Bruges, but it can also be a close call whether this is just a Duchesse without the needlelace, or something with more actual Bruges characteristics. It’s a subject in need of research. This particular piece is quite elaborate, right on the edge of the Duchesse de Bruxelles designs.
Provenance:  From a local estate.

Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage:  Seller cites 2 tiny age spots.

Comments: An Irish Crochet neckpiece, sort of a collar. It has interesting motifs, quite unusual in design (although the shamrocks are pretty recognizable.). It does have a rather thrown together appearance, with a little left-right symmetry. The ground appears to be needlemade which would put it in the later Honiton Point category. The texture of the motifs has that slightly grainy appearance that might have to do with the type of thread used.  Interesting piece.
Provenance:  From a local estate.

Modifications: None
Damage: Seller cites a few broken brides.
Soilage:  Looks clean from the photos.

Comments: A short border of Point de Gaze.  No raised work, and decorative ‘mode’ fillings are kept to a minimum. The design is sophisticated, the work excellent, and this is a type of Belgian needlelace at the top of its game.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Looks cut on both ends.
Damage: Seller says it looks unused, and I can’t see anything in the photos.

Comments: A wide border of embroidered net, tambour embroidery which probably means it is Belgian manufacture.  The design is delicate and quite beautiful. This is a primary reason why I’m doing more with the embroidered nets in the Ebay Alerts.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Sewn into a circle.
Damage: A few well-done repairs, one join (not the one joining it into a circle). Occasional loose threads. A few small holes and pinholes in the net.
Soilage:  Seller cites age yellowing and rare small spot.
