No Ebay Alerts today, December 19, 2013

We’ve had some fantastic lace listings on Ebay in the past few week, but things have quieted down a lot for the holidays.  Therefore I’m foregoing today’s alerts.  But take a look at 141142046230, the Carrickmacross dress front, and 2 Point de Gaze berthas, 310822100536 and 310822126692.

Happy Holidays!

Ebay Alerts! Eight items – December 15, 2013

http://tinyurl.com/kb9zfsf Antique Victorian lace parasol cover, Application de Bruxelles aux Fuseaux c1860
Size:  22″ diameter (if I’m reading correctly)
Starting Price: 10.00 GBP
Auction ends: Dec 15, 2013 12:22:26 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller poppy1109, Rochester, Kent, United Kingdom
Comments: A parasol cover of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net. Good romantic design, eight-pointed geometry.  Note the extensive esprits in the ground – this is a higher end market product. I think it is finer than it looks from the photos due to the small size. These don’t come up very often, especially not in this good condition.
Provenance:  ‘Residual’ contents of the home of Lord & Lady Winnington.
Condition:
Modifications: None – but the center hole for the parasol tip could have been better finished.
Damage: Seller cites one tiny hole in the tulle.
Soilage:  Looks clean in the photos.

360808206793   Sold for 102.00 GBP, 12 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/kqlsf33 EXQUISITE ANTIQUE REAL EARLY VENETIAN ROSE POINT VENICE NEEDLE LACE POMEGRANATES
Size:  7″ x 48″ with 8″ fringe (I think only on one end)
Starting Price: $295.00
Auction ends: Dec 16, 2013 19:07:01 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller micu02, Montevideo, Uruguay
Comments: A Belgian needlelace border, later 19th c, imitating early Venetian rose point, but with a distinctly Belgian character. Two specific features mark the origin (other than the general design). First the cordonnet is attached with loosely spaced buttonhole stitches, similar to what you see in Point de Gaze needlelace. Second, note the overlapping rings used as decorative fillings, also a Pt d G technique. This is a nice example of the type, probably cotton. Use of linen was rare in this lace, although that fringe might be linen thread.
Provenance:  None given.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut on both ends, the fringe is a later addition.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage:  Seller cites age yellowing, although photographed on the nice blue background it looks quite clean.

321274833359   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/m7khp7z Antique Venetian handmade needle lace lovely collar
Size:  24″ neckline, 4.5″ center depth
Starting Price: 29.99 GBP
Auction ends: Dec 17, 2013 07:43:15 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A dress front of Venise needlelace. Given the loosely buttonholed cordonnet and the way the rings are made, probably again a Belgian piece.  Fairly typical design, picoted brides, some simple variations in the clothwork.
Provenance:  None given.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage:  Yellowing around the neckline.

291035347822   Sold for 29.99 GBP, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/kmyn2gw Antique Victorian Irish crochet lace trim edging 66″ exquisite ecru hand made
Size:  5″ x 66″
Starting Price: $150.00
Auction ends: Dec 17, 2013 09:07:53 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller gypsy5961, New Milford, Connecticut, United States
Comments: A border of Irish Crochet.  The thread is quite shiny, might be silk, although it’s hard to tell exactly. It does have a rather soft look to it. Large, elaborate motifs, good raised work, tight clothwork, and the picots on the brides look like crocheted loops.  In all the Irish Crochet I’ve reviewed over the years on LaceNews, 77% are collars, and only 4.5% are borders. It’s really quite remarkable, so I tend to pay attention to the borders when they come up.
Provenance:  “Ct (country?) estate fresh first time offered”
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage:  Ecru color, looks quite soft, but hard to say if that’s wear or just the thread quality.

190998837263   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/lthhskg Antique LACE-CIRCA 17-18TH LACE
Size:  3.5″ x 128″
Starting Price: $65.00
Auction ends: Dec 17, 2013 13:59:52 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: The lace looks like a Flemish tape lace with an irregular reseau, almost a droschel ground. Note some of the heads almost look like they have square tallies around the center – not enough closeups to tell for sure.  This one is a puzzle, but it looks 18th c.
Provenance:  None given.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends.  Top by the engrelure also has some interrupted motifs, perhaps cut.  One join.
Damage: A few small openings, some pulls in the ground. A few small repairs.
Soilage:  Ecru color, no obvious stains.

390724007298   Sold for $66.99, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/khd2djx ANTIQUE LACE -EARLY VENETIAN LACE
Size:  3.5″ x 88.5″
Starting Price: $195.00
Auction ends: Dec 17, 2013 14:11:55 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A border of Point de France, late 17th century. Basically you can tell Point de France from the contemporary Venetian products by the presence of the hexagonal picoted mesh and/or a certain vertical symmetry to the design. This one does have a more flowing design. Both top and bottom look cut in this piece, so I suspect it was originally much larger.  Ireland did copy this type of lace, but I don’t think that’s the case here. It’s too clean in execution.
Provenance:  Museum de-accession.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t tell if ends are cut.  Looks cut down from a larger piece. Bobbin-made engrelure added later, probably also the bottom looped edge.
Damage: Nothing obvious from photos – maybe a few loose threads.
Soilage:  Looks clean from the photos

390724013659   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/lfzjudx Exquisite Handmade Duchesse de Bruxelles Lace
Size:  4″ x 32″ and 39″
Starting Price: $99.99
Auction ends: Dec 18, 2013 13:32:31 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller cybergro2010, Wilmington, Vermont, United States
Comments: Two pieces of a border of Duchesse de Bruxelles – pieced bobbinlace with Point de Gaze inserts. Single raised petal roses in the Pt de G inserts , and some raised wrok in the leaves of the bobbinlace.  Note the little windows in the needlelace rose petals.
Provenance:  Family collection.
Condition:
Modifications: Engrelure missing in part of one piece – minor.  Three ends cut, one looks terminated.
Damage: One break in the header of one piece just where engrelure starts to go missing. Pt de Gaze mesh looks intact except for one hole. One separation in the leaves along lower border – minor.
Soilage:  Looks clean from the photos.

321273004765   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/m3npo9a “DENTELLIERE AU TRAVAIL ” lithographie signée TOFFOLI Louis
Size:  63 cm x 47 cm
Starting Price: 120.00 EUR
Auction ends: Dec 19, 2013 06:02:07 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller paulonaoned, Nantes, France
Comments: Artist’s proof. OK, she has no face, and if a French lacemaker, it’s not quite accurate, but it is a good, colorful lithograph. I’m wondering if this might be a depiction of a Sri Lanka lacemaker, from the clothing, and the costume and equipment see more typical of that region. See http://tinyurl.com/lfg4pcn. Louis Toffli was a naturalized French citizen (10/16/1907 to 2/18/1999). There’s a Wikipedia article that mentions his lithography, and also that he traveled extensively later in life.
Provenance:  None given.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious.
Soilage:  Looks good from the photos.

121232606182   Sold for 120.00 GBP, 1 bidder.

Ebay Alerts! Fourteen items – December 12, 2013

http://tinyurl.com/l9nyfvg Vintage Handmade Rosaline Bobbin Lace Cuffs Early 20th Century
Size:  each 4″ x 26″ around.
Starting Price: $49.00
Auction ends: Dec 13, 2013 06:56:11 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller twist-in-time, Pottstown, Pennsylvania, United States
Comments: Two cuffs of Belgian Rosaline, later 19th c. They appear to have been cut from a longer length and joined in circles. No perls, but good raised work – note a number of the photos are taken from the back side.  Rosaline is a later Belgian development and usually meticulously worked. These are typical examples.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: These have been formed from a longer border.
Damage: A few frayed threads.
Soilage:  Looks white from the photos, but seller says there’s a ‘patina’.

301038490906   Sold for $49.00, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/ks7fvrk ANTIQUE LACE- CIRCA 19TH CENTURY POINT DE GAZE LACE BRUSSELS
Size:  3″ x 50″
Starting Price: $145.00, $195.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: Dec 14, 2013 o7:42:12 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller antex, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, United States
Comments: A narrow border of Point de Gaze, no raised work. It is a fairly plain piece, with the only decoration the buttonholed rings.  A light design, but not very refined. I think it’s an interesting example, probably later 19th c.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to ascertain the termination. Looks like something has been overcast on the upper edge.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos, but there aren’t many photos.
Soilage:  Off white color, some tiny brown spots. It does look a little shrunken, perhaps a previous washing.

221332438173   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/kn2dljz ANTIQUE HM 18THC MAGNIFECENT VERY RARE & LONG BRUSSELS POINT LACE/ 117″ X 4″
Size:  4″ x 117″
Starting Price: $2,350.00 Buy-it-Now or Make Offer
Auction ends: Dec 14, 2013 o7:52:32 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller snakey03rr, Bourbon, Missouri, United States
Comments: This needlelace border has an interesting naturalistic design, and a fine mesh, although the mesh is a little irregularly placed.  I think it is a later 19th century Burano piece.  If you look very carefully at the edges of the motifs, the heavy thread is couched on, not buttonholed, and this is a Burano characteristic. The clothwork is also very open with a sort of mechanical appearance that the pillow-made needlelace of this region tends to produce. The design resembles the Louis XV style, but looks a little scattered.  A bit different from more conventional Burano products, you can often be surprised at the variations in lace that this area produced.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Six joins, although I’m having trouble finding them – not exactly sure what that means. Ends look cut, one finished with an engrelure.
Damage: Scattered small holes in the mesh.
Soilage:  Ecru color.

181277273253   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/lfd3jcy Antique 19th C Handmade BELGIAN DUCHESSE Lace Hankderchief Hanky Wedding Bridal
Size:  13″ square
Starting Price: $195.00 Buy-it-Now or Make Offer
Auction ends: Dec 14, 2013 10:35:07 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller purpletigerblue, Colorado Springs, Colorado, United States
Comments: A monogrammed handkerchief of Duchesse de Bruges, meaning no needlace insertions. Motifs are small with a delicate design. Bundled veining and some raised edges, picoted irregular bride ground.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Some broken brides and attachments, a little fraying of some threads. Some brides are not plaited, but I don’t think these are repairs.
Soilage:  Not too crisp, looks like it’s been washed in the past.

141115932749   Unsold.

http://tinyurl.com/me6f4wn Beautiful Handmade Brussels Lace w/Point de Gaze Flounce c. 1800’s
Size:  8.5″ x 30″
Starting Price: $145.00 Buy-it-Now or Make Offer
Auction ends: Dec 14, 2013 10:35:07 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller sugarbaby2011, MB, Canada
Comments: A flounce of Brussels Duchesse. Elaborate Point de Gaze inserts, double layered rose petals and complex decorative ‘mode’ fillings. I like how the fillings proceed from small to large around the lower curve of the Pt d G. Good raised work in the bobbinlace, especially against the halfstitch base.  Overall good design, tending toward a high end market.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut on both ends.
Damage: Some pinholes in the Pt de G mesh. Bobbilace looks intact.
Soilage:  “Antique white”, no obvious soilage from the photos.

181279035572   Unsold.

http://tinyurl.com/lcnxe68 Antique WEDDING Hankderchief HandMade BRUSSELS Bobbin LACE w Point de Gaze AS IS
Size:  13.5″ square
Starting Price: $9.99
Auction ends: Dec 14, 2013 19:24:03 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller winter-garden, West Palm Beach, Florida, United States
Comments: A Point de Gaze handkerchief with good design; not just the conventional roses usually seen. There are a few roses, seen in side view with narrow raised petals, and I especially like the little raised bud in the corner medallions. I’ve never seen that before.  A few decorative ‘mode’ fillings, but mostly this relies on the flatter needlelace design.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Scattered small holes and pinholes in the mesh. A few small holes in the center cloth.
Soilage:  Looks clean from the photos. Does have a little shrinkage, probably from washing (for example, note the twists in the decorative filling stars).

370959889828   Sold for $81.00, 8 bidd3ers.

http://tinyurl.com/kvbojay ANTIQUE FRENCH NEEDLE LACE WAX FLOWER CROWN SET

Starting Price: $100.00, $140.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: Dec 15, 2013 05:09:34 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller monroulez, centre, France
Comments: I don’t know anything about wax flowers, but the lace is a Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. With a few simple needlelace accents. The design is a bit architectural with vertical symmetry – wish there were more photos so the top edge was visible.  Looks like there are flower sprays along the top, with a regular pattern of esprits. Motifs are a little large, but the design is effective and it has a good, bold look.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos, but there are few photos.
Soilage:  Looks quite clean.

161171754549   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/k2tamna Antique/vintage Limerick lace shawl – wheat ears and meadow flowers
Size:  20″ x 2 yards 28″
Starting Price: 50.00 GBP
Auction ends: Dec 15, 2013 11:05:34 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A rectangular needle-run shawl, could be Limerick but Lierre is also a possibility.  It has a kind of Blonde de Caen style with the heavy edge and several large motifs at the ends – these might include wheat ears.  I think it would be a little more effective if there were three repeats of this motif, but space s limited.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: A few small holes and pinholes in the tulle – minor
Soilage:  Looks clean from the photos.

Offered by: Ebay seller linskapet, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway DG6 4UU, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of Irish Crochet, attached to a header tape, finished both ends with a separate border of smaller motifs. The large heavy rings are used for motif centers and also grape bunches.  Picots look like crocheted loops.
Provenance:  From a 19th century French priest’s ecclesiastical vestment
Condition:
Modifications: Ends finished with different borders.  Woven band for attachment added at the top.
Damage: A little worn but no obvious damage from the photos.
Soilage:  Some of the  brides seem to be loosening up, whether this is original or a result of washing I can’t tell.

Comments: A handkerchief of Bruges Duchesse bobbinlace. Sort of a lily pattern around the edges, fairly simple but makes good use of the space.
Provenance:  None given.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: A little frayed, some loose brides. One tiny hole in cloth.

Comments: A long, narrow border of bobbinlace applique on machine net. Short repeat of 3 flowers in a small spray, with a slightly scalloped lace of the same flowers.  Nicely done, no esprits, but well worked and an effective design.
Provenance:  None given.
Condition:
Modifications: Ends cut. Seller cites 3 loosely done joins, which I can’t find in the photos. Not sure what that means.
Damage: Scattered pinholes in the net.

Offered by: Ebay seller angiesfolly, Bellaire, Texas, United States
Comments: A Point de Gaze handkerchief. The lace border is quite narrow, and has no raised work. A few decorative ‘mode’ fillings, and overall the design does well in such a small space.
Provenance:  None given.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Pinholes and some small holes in the mesh. Not easily repaired, proper thread just not available anymore.

Auction ends: Dec 16, 2013 18:17:54 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller sirjle, Paris, France
Comments: A small bolero jacket of “Irish Crochet”, with a very French ‘Dillmont’ look.  French crochet is characterized by very precise work, elaborate, innovative grounds, and heavy raised work. This one doesn’t have much in the way of raised work and the grounds are a bit subdued, but it is a very effective design.
Provenance:  None given.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious in the photos.

Ebay Alerts! Twenty-one items – December 9, 2013

This is a continuation from yesterday’s Alerts. There’s quite a pileup of good lace on Ebay during the holiday season.

Auction ends: Dec 10, 2013 15:00:42 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller snakey03rr, Bourbon, Missouri, United States
Comments: A Brabant border, which looks terminated as part of the original work at both ends – something I haven’t seen before.  The piece has the typical pattern of combination bride and mesh grounds, with large motifs. Probably mid 18th c.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Terminated on the ends, unusual.
Damage: A few broken brides.
Soilage:  Looks clean from the photos.

Size:  25″ x 109-110″
Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Dec 10, 2013 16:02:34 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A rectangular shawl of a later 19th century lace which goes under the name Point de Milan.  See the photo on the right which is a page from a contemporary catalog showing a bertha of the same type of lace.  The quality of this kind of lace can vary widely. It is basically a Bruges-type pieced bobbinlace with needlelace mesh of various types. The photos on this one aren’t close enough to really examine the mesh, but I’ll speculate that is what it is.  This shawl has a good design and precise work – a good example of the type.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None

Comments: A Belgian square pillow – not too unusual to see these, but the accompanying stand is rare.  The pillow sits on a wedge-shaped base with a side drawer, and the pillow has a drawer at the back. Can’t tell if there’s another drawer at the bottom. The small removable insert can be transferred to the top, and gives the worker extra room for the bobbins at the end of a piece. The actual cover would be a heavy canvas, and the lacemaker would put another cover of whatever color was found convenient for working.   The stand extends and is held in place by a metal pin.

Damage: general wear. Foot and head of the stand scuffed, as expected. Overall wood condition appears good.  Part of the blue cover is coming undone, but this is normally just pinned on.

Comments: This seller is listing five lots of Eastern European lace, and when the seller is an Eastern European textile specialist, you pay attention.  Attribution is a bit confusing – Czech, Russian, Italian, Hungarian, Croatian, Slovenian?  I’ll speculate that at least in technique last two are Russian tape lace – bold good designs. Note the heavy thread down the center of the tapes in the last one, a Russian technique.  The bottom two of the third listing also look Russian, the top one look more Czech or Slovenian.
The top one in the second listing looks Northern Italian, and the bottom is that vermicular stuff some people ascribe to Flanders. But it could be along the lines of Russian Yelts.
The first listing is quite interesting, since colored Eastern European laces don’t come up that often. Again, I’ll say Czech or Slovenia, although Russia is possible.

Comments: Please see my comments on the use of the term Point de Venise a Reseau from yesterday’s Ebay Alerts, a term which should never be used in connection with the widely varying 18th c flat grounded needlelaces. There really is no confusion at all on the origin of pieces like this, and it has been written about extensively by Belgian researchers (see Les Points a l’Aguille Belges by Mme Lucie Paulis, and works by Mme Risselin-Steenebrugen, with whom I had discussions on the subject around 1980). As much as I admire Pat Earnshaw, she is way off here (we talked extensively about this just after I returned from Belgium). The English writers like Jourdain and Powys writing around 1900 are just guessing, and subsequent research has really nailed this subject down.  In fact it is the English writers who introduced this confusion, if they had consulted the conveniently nearby Belgian and Italian sources there would be no trouble.
This what we now call ‘flat grounded needlelace’, a Belgian piece, mid 18th c, typical Louis XIV design. A good example, just lacking some of the more common star-like fillings. It’s also not as rare as people are often left to believe, in fact there are several pieces very recently sold or just coming up for sale on Ebay. In fact we have 2 Italian pieces today and yesterday. I have a number of these in my collection, and it shows up occasionally at auction, especially in France.  And along with the Point de Sedan made nearby, it is considered one of the finest laces ever made.
Provenance:  From the estate of a prominent lace collector.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut on one end, can’t see the other.
Damage: Two small slits in the reseau, a few pinholes, some damage to the engrelure, a minor issue.
Soilage:  Looks very clean, a few fold lines, also minor.

Comments: A long border of bobbin tape lace with 6-pointed star ground. Much like early Milanese, but the overall design, fillings, and edge treatments argue more for an Eastern European origin.  It has some interesting woven ‘tally’ fillings, which you would also not see in Italian work.

Comments: The pillow is a large East Midlands bolster with 30 bobbins (unsure of their age), and an attached Torchon pattern.  It would be packed tight with straw, and seems to be a little depressed in the working area – which is good. Comments: The name “Point de Venise  á Réseau” is something that should never be used. It was first suggested by an English writer, in the mid 1800’s, and was never a term applied to any needlelace by the actual manufacturers.  Today we generally refer to the class of Belgian and Italian laces of this type as ‘flat grounded needlelaces’. The problem is to determine exact origin.  This particular piece looks like it might be a lappet, however it is much too long, and has no division indicating two separate pieces joined together. It is more of an insertion piece.
These do come up now and again, I have one in my collection (see the thumbnail on the right below). In technique they are very similar, except that the line of the mesh runs along the length in the first piece, and across it in the second one.  The authors who do think about this problem generally ascribe this lace to Burano, later 18th century. By that time the Italian needlelace industry was well past its prime, and the magnificent flat grounded needlelaces of Belgium completely eclipse the Italian efforts (I’ve spoken to Belgian researchers who are extremely upset that the products of their country are assumed Italian because of this “Point de Venise  á Réseau” nomenclature.) The Italian work is often described as a little coarse in design with a very cloudy mesh.  There is no sign of the couched border that would develop in the 19th c.
The piece listed by the seller is of better quality design than usually seen, with some filling work that actually recalls what they did with the groundwork in the Gros Points.
There is one other possibility – we believe such laces were made in what is now Austria, but we know very little about them. In the portrait of Anna Maria Mozart shown below she is holding a piece of lace that she is presumed to have made herself. It does bear some resemblance to what we are talking about here.

Comments: A Honiton collar. Guess you could call it a Point Honiton since it looks like the brides are buttonholed over, and are in a loose hexagonal mesh.  Snails/slugs style, and some fillings are rather narrow tallies, like long oval leaves. Others are more square.  Overall a nice looking piece.

Comments: An odd shaped piece of Honiton, I’ll suggest it might have been the end of a scarf.  Seems rather delicate to have been a covering for a chair arm, and I don’t think that was really an English tradition anyway. The lace is quite sophisticated in technique, and the flower (second one down along the centerline) without any raised work unlike anything I’ve ever seen in Honiton.  It does also have the big feathery leaves along the outside that you see in better quality Honiton.  Brides are picoted in an approximate square mesh.
Condition:

Comments: This looks like a very typical Beds ‘assembled’ collar – a center shaped piece surrounded by plaited borders.  The seller says it is silk which would be very unusual, and the photos aren’t really close enough for me to tell.  If it is silk I’d ascribe is more to the French Cluny laces. However the design of the leaves and the trails and edge treatment of the borders look very English.

Comments: A semicircular hat veil of Chantilly.  Typical heavy design on the outer edge with esprits throughout the ground.  Looks very black – typically a sign of heavier thread used in Belgian work.  The French tends to look a little more grey. But it is difficult to tell for certain from the photos.

Comments: Two pieces of fine raised needlelace, probably cuffs, and they appear to be 19th c.  I’ll go with Belgian on this one, basically because of the chain of rings in the centers of some flowers, and also the good openwork fillings. The photo’s aren’t close enough for one good test, that is if the cordonnet is buttonholed on with spaced stitches (as opposed to being covered with stitches worked tightly together), that’s a pretty sure sign of Belgian work, and is also done in Point de Gaze.  Nice treatment of the brides with the little picoted loops, which mirrors somewhat the edge work.

Comments: Two mid 18th c sleeve ruffles of Dresden drawnwork.  Really beautiful work, mid 18th c.  The ends look unworked, perhaps that’s the natural finished, or maybe they were unfinished and cut short. In fact they have a rather unfinished look at the ends overall. This type of work was an alternative to the more expensive contemporary bobbin and needlelaces and fit well with the fashion for light muslin dress in the 3rd quarter of the 19th century.  This is one of the nicest sets I’ve seen come on the market in a long time.

Comments: A handkerchief of Brussels Duchesse. No raised work in the Point de Gaze inserts.  There is some well done raised work in the bobbinlace, and note the flower-like decorative needlelace ‘mode’ fillings.  I especially like the inner edge treatment and how the projecting motifs are appliqued onto the center cloth.  The bobbinlace motifs are small and finely worked.

Comments: The meandering design, the heavily decorated brides and raised edges of the motifs, all speak to a late 17th c Italian piece.  It is diffic8ult to trace the design, so may have been re-assembled somewhat. The upper edge does look cut, with the egrelure added later.  Overall not quite a Punto Nuevo, but getting close.

Size:  5″ x 61″
Starting Price: 13.00 GBP
Auction ends: Dec 09, 2013 11:04:19 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A narrow scarf of bobbinlace guipure, appears to be linen. Very hard to say where this originated, perhaps Spain, maybe France, maybe an Easter European or Northern Italian piece. Interesting design, almost an Art Nouveau feeling.  Perhaps someone has a more precise idea?  It is a rather complex piece.
Condition:
Modifications: none
Damage:  A few frayed threads but you have to look hard to find them.
Soilage:  Looks basically clean from the photos, but I see some very tiny brown spots here and there.

Size:  8.5″ x 106″
Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Dec 09, 2013 11:04:19 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A reasonably wide, long Point d’Angleterre border. This lace combins bobbinlace motifs with a Point de GAze ground and the best has extensive decorative ‘mode’ needlelace fillings. This is an excellent example – I’ve never seen some of the fillings before.  Note also the raised rings at the centers of the small flowers, almost like Rosaline. It’s a later 19th century lace, one of the best of the Belgian mixed laces.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends so don’t know if it is cut.
Damage:  Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage:  Very clean, looks unused.

Comments: A Honiton dress front, snail/slugs style.  Motifs are tightly woven and the woven tallies are quite precise. Picoted brides in roughly square pattern.  Excellent technique.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage:  One or two broken brides, very minor.
Soilage:  Looks quite white.  Just a little wrinkled. Parts of the neckline look a little rolled.

Offered by: Ebay seller sugarbaby21011, london, United Kingdom
Comments: A Chantilly flounce with some ombre shading. Which could put it in the French Chantilly category, although it does have that very black Belgian look. Seller is offering this by the yard.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut on ends.
Damage:  Hard to evaluate since I don’t know if what is shown in the photos has already been sold.  There do seem to be some minor pulls, but overall intact.
Soilage:  Very black, hard to tell, but looks OK from the photos.

Size:  ~12″ x 4″ (deep?)
Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Dec 10, 2013 07:15:34 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A Gros Point collar, Italian, ~1660, very simple in technique which points to the early days in the development of this lace. Note the plain clothwork, but it’s deceptively plain, often sculpted to go around curves.  And they would have been heavily finished with dry pressing. So many needlelace problems were fully worked out in this kind of lace.  The raised edges are understated, but heavily picoted.  I suspect the bride ground was added as a result of the reconstruction.
Condition:
Modifications: Reworked from a larger piece, motifs cut along the collar edges.  Looks a little unfinished at the ends.
Damage:  Basically intact.
Soilage:  Nothing obvious from the photos.

Comments: A Point de Gaze fan with elaborated embossed Mother of Pearl (Abalone) sticks.  Good naturalistic design in the lace.  The decorative fillings are a little plain.
Provenance:  Not sure where the Tiffany provenance is coming from.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: A few pinholes, minor, one stick broken.
Soilage:  Seller cites some age spots.

Starting Price: $195.00
Auction ends: Dec 10, 2013 08:02:45 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: Alençon lappets, joined together (although I can’t see the join in the photos.) Typical later 18th c design of a narrow border with sparse design in the center. Brides tortillée, maybe with 1 or 2 buttonholes per side. Looks rather plain, but that was the style. It’s finer technique than it looks in the photos.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None, although without seeing the join it’s hard to tell how intact the lappets are.
Damage: Some tiny holes in the fillings. A few pulled threads in the ground, but very minor. Seller cites some repairs, although I can’t find them in the photos.
Soilage:  Nothing obvious, no comments from seller.

Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A border of Burano needlelace, imitating the designs found in the early 19th c.  Note the couched edge thread, typical of Burano. The extensive esprits in the ground give it a slightly heavy look. This is a lace meant to be ruffled.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Some small openings and one small repair on one edge.
Soilage:  Looks clean from phtoos.

Offered by: Ebay seller titus_a_duxarce, Nottingham, U.K., United Kingdom
Comments: An upright English wooden bobbin winder, clamps to a table edge. I’m pretty sure that the bone ring is to be put on the bobbin clamp to secure the bobbin in place. All wood, hand turned. There were copies of this type of thing made in the past 30 years or so, but this one has a more original feel.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Looks intact – often the screw on the bottom is damaged in these pieces.
Soilage:  Expected patina.

Comments: A Point ground lace that has a Beveren look to it.  Straight border, short, feathery repeats with small sprigs in the ground.  Probably early 19th c, since it seems quite fine and looks like it has a soft hand.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Looks like the top edge has been cut away. Can’t see the ends.
Damage: One join 4″ from one end.  Scattered small breaks in the ground.
