Ebay Alerts! Twenty-five items – November 7, 2013

http://tinyurl.com/oxb2fuz Antique/vintage Honiton lace collar v.g.c.
Size:  17″ neckedge, 6.1″ deep at back
Starting Price: 24.95 GBP
Auction ends: Nov 08, 2013 09:43:45 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A Honiton guipure collar, looks like the neck edging was attached separately.  Well done snails/slugs style, and note the machine-made row of lozenges just inside the neckline. You see this occasionally, must be a means of speeding up production. I can’t tell if the brides are needle or bobbin-made, I suspect bobbin. Good tally fillings in the open spaces of motifs. The design is mirror symmetric, and fits the clean shape well.
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage:  Nothing obvious from the few photos.
Soilage:  Looks very clean, possibly unused.

331057605665   Sold for 27.00 GBP, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/qhe7snh * Antique IRISH CROCHET Lace Lot – 3 Collars + 5 Cuffs
Size:  the sewn cuff is estimated at 2.5″ x 14″ if unpicked.
Starting Price: $19.00
Auction ends: Nov 08, 2013 11:30:35 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester, United Kingdom
Comments: A variety of Irish Crochet pieces, including two round collars, a dress front, two cuffs, one silk piece and two matching curved pieces that look like they could be used as cuffs.  The two round pieces are Rose of Sharon pattern. The dress front is more complex with scattered small motifs throughout – mirror symmetry. The two curved pieces are a more geometric style. One cuff is a series of some kind of flower with raised rings, and the other cuff appears to be a grape pattern, sewn into a circle. The little silk piece is unusual, and I’m not sure what it is for.  All of these are good middle-market pieces, nicely worked.
Condition:
Modifications:  Not sure about the silk piece.  One cuff has ends sewn together
Damage:  Seller cites one break in the neckline to one collar
Soilage:  Color varies among the pieces, but generally clean.

Starting Price: $474.98 Buy-it-Now or Make Offer
Auction ends: Nov 08, 2013 15:03:19 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller cherubim_gates, Raleigh, North Carolina, United States
Comments: A a runner and 4 placemats of what I’ll call ‘Point de Milan’, with figural tape lace accents.  The figural part is probably a Northern Italian tape lace, quite narrow tapes with a little chain work. There is a man worked in each corner of each piece.  The center Point de Milan pieces a typical bobbinlace with needle-made ground, although the very centers have a bride ground.  The bobbinlace isn’t quite broken up into pieces, more of a tape that reminds me of Cantu work just a little.  Funny how in the mats this would be the part hidden by the plates, and the emphasis is more on the narrow tapes. I think this was all put together in the early 20th c around Cantu.
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage:  A few broken brides, not serious.
Soilage:  Some light staining.

Size:  Not given.
Starting Price: 125.00 EUR
Auction ends: Nov 09, 2013 11:37:10 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller fil-et-bricole, CHINY, GAUME, Belgium
Comments: Queyras lace equipment doesn’t come up very often, and there’s always a lot of interest when it does.  This tambour pillow is a narrow drum shape, designed for the freehand lace of the region. They are elaborately chip carved, which appeals to a variety of collectors. Usually they have a little door in one side so you can access the inside of the pillow for storage – this one has the opening, but the door itself is missing.  Stuffed with straw, and the cover cloth can be replaced as desired. This pillow has some age to it, but I would hesitate to go outside the later 19th c.
Given the interest in this item, I would include a standard warning of buyer beware on this type of material. Beautiful examples of these pillows are being made today, and the age patina is hard to fake, but please, still be cautious.  I don’t have the skills to accurately access authenticity, especially from the few photos.
Condition:
Modifications:  Storage door missing.
Damage: One large stress crack.
Soilage:  Good age patina.

Size:  33 cm diameter
Starting Price: 4.00 GBP
Auction ends: Nov 09, 2013 13:43:59 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller stguidelines, Gloucester, Gloucestershire, United Kingdom
Comments: This thing may just look like a white lump, but I’m always interested in earlier English equipment.  The size is fairly small, it could be a Honiton pillow. I’d expect that the pillow itself is hard stuffed with straw with a canvas cover – the white cover is put on over this and can be replaced. Note the ghost of a handkerchief corner, Beds or Torchon, can’t tell.
Condition:
Modifications:  Cover is a later, expected addition.
Damage: Nothing obvious, although you can’t see the original pillow which is under the cloth.
Soilage:  Generally soiled, note the ghost of a beds or Torchon pattern.

Size:  35 cm square
Starting Price: 9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Nov 10, 2013 03:56:24 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller dianavee52, Cornwall, United Kingdom
Comments: An unusual Honiton Point handkerchief. The ground is needle-made, an unusual square grid with thread wound around each intersection to give a heavy knot. The motifs are refined, out of the snails/slugs era, but not quite as sophisticated as sometimes found. Note the feathery leaves around the edges with unusual looped edges, and the extensive tally grid fillings. There aren’t any closeups of the lozenge braid around the center cloth, but it looks possibly machine-made (similar to the first item reviewed today). n Altogether an unusual Honiton piece.
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage: Some broken brides, a few weak spots in the fillings.
Soilage:  Seller cites cream color, no obvious stains that I can spot.

Comments: Might be Honiton but the motifs are smaller and more densely made than usually seen. Also the brides are buttonholed, which would be unusual.  The picots around the edge are also very prominent, and there aren’t any large areas of tally fillings. And the design is rather stark.  But I’m hard pressed to say what else it might be.
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage: Occasional frayed thread, nothing major.
Soilage:  Seller cites a cream color. I don’t see any obvious spots.

Comments: This has the feel of a Bruges design, but the weaving is so tight that it might be Ghent.  In the large leaves at the bottom you can follow the bobbins as they go around all the parts of the leaves and see how the threads bunch up in the narrow parts.  There’s a funny acorn motif that doesn’t quite go with the leaves. Note the islands at the intersections of the picoted brides, also something you see in Bruges. Interesting piece.
Condition:
Modifications:  Can’t see the ends to say if they are cut.
Damage: A few loose brides.

Comments: These two scarves are similar in technique and style so I though I’d put them together. Both Duchesse de Bruges, the first a narrow rectangular scarf, the second a rounded end lappet scarf. Both have a similar simple design with the same fluted outside edge, and a pattern of flowers and leaves up the centers.  No needlelace that I can see except for some very simple fillings in flower centers, which puts them in the Bruges Duchesse category. Not quite Bloemwerk, but close.

Comments: A simply designed lappet scarf of Brussels application on machine tulle.  Some needlelace ring chain fillings at the ends. The flowers appear to be carnations.  A good middle market piece, nicely worked.
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage: A small hole in the tulle near the left end, a few pinholes in the mesh elsewhere. One motif on the right side end edge looks slightly damage, and a few loose threads along the edges.

Modifications:  None.
Damage: On 1.5″ poor repair, small holes and pinholes in the mesh throughout.

Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: 18th century lappets don’t often survive with their connecting band (and almost never with the matching cap back, around which the band would have been ruffled).  These are Brussels bobbinlace with droschel ground, around 1760. The band is a close match in style to the lappets, and if you look at the tops of the lappets, the band seems to have been made in one piece with them.  Droschel ground is made in very narrow strips ‘sewn’ together.  This piece does have a later 19th century picoted border sewn on, which was a very common ‘improvement’ for older pieces.  Good floral design, starting to break away from the more undulating mid 18th century design. The droschel ground is quite fine. Much of the attractiveness of lappets such as these are the quality and variety of the fillings, which are interesting here.
Condition:
Modifications:  Picoted edge added later.  Cap back missing.
Damage: Lots of tears and pulls in the mesh, some along the join lines.  Damage to the top of one lappet where it joins with the band.
Soilage: Nothing obvious in the photos.

Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: Another pair of 18th century lappets with droschel ground.  Mid 18th century. The ground is rather irregularly laid, and the motifs have a kind of roundness to them. Basically no decorative fillings, and the design is a little naive. All this says English Devon work to me. The lappets are joined together at the tops.
Condition:
Modifications:  Can’t see the join to tell if there is any damage.
Damage: Some small holes and pinholes in the mesh throughout.
Soilage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Starting Price: $85.00
Auction ends: Nov 10, 2013 12:03:02 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: I think this might be a 19th century Mechlin edging. The flowers are a bit too regimented, the ground too open, and it doesn’t really match the Louis XV styles. And there are some halfstitch areas in the leaves, a later 19th c characteristic. Fillings along the bottom are quite interesting.
Condition:
Modifications:  Some kind of a stitch line just below the footedge, seller says it can be removed.
Damage: Pinholes in the mesh.  Lower edge looks a bit ragged.
Soilage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A narrow Valenciennes border, ~1730, with the 5-hole ground an snowflake fillings. Note the quatrefoil motifs which are more a characteristic of Mechlin lace of this period, but are also found in Valenciennes.  Val went through a lot of experimentation in ground types before settling on the plaited round an square meshes of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.  Note the line drawing in this very flat lace, perfectly delineating the design. This is one of my favorite laces, and one of the great 18th century products. And it is finer than it looks with the width of only 1-3/4″.
Condition:
Modifications:  Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.
Damage: Some fraying and breaks along the footedge, as if this was previously attached to something. The main body of the lace looks intact.
Soilage: Nothing obvious from the photos. I’m wondering if this seller’s photos are in B&W which might account for seeing so little staining in recent listings. Not sure.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw. A silk blonde rectangular shawl, very wide. This lace doesn’t survive well, see condition notes.  It does have the Blonde de Caen look, but perhaps an earlier 19th c piece. It is made in strips, 4″ wide (see sellers notes.) It does seem rather pieced together – if you look closely the center portions appear to be strips of about 4 different designs laid next to each other  – no attempt at organizing a mirror image along the long axis.  Stare at the blue photo long enough and you will see what I mean. The only thing that is really consistent is the outer edge. Still, they got a large rectangular piece, and this kind of blonde is so impressive. That’s just the way it was made.
Condition:
Modifications:  None.
Damage: A lot of the mesh and some fillings have holes – difficult to repair.
Soilage: A cream color.  I don’t see any obvious stains, but it would take more closeups for a good examination.

Comments: A long border of Alençon.  I think it’s more around 1800 Directoire design. Then I started looking at the way the toilé is made in the wheat ear leaves, and am wondering if it is even later in the century.  Plus the condition is so good – earlier pieces don’t often survive that well.   No decorative ‘mode’ fillings, which is unusual. Réseau fin ground. The picots along the lower edge are finely done, but photos not close enough to see if any horsehair is left in. Overall it is a rather simple design, made to be ruffled, and quite effective.
Condition:
Modifications:  No photos of the ends so can’t tell if it has been cut.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos. Seller cites one small tear, but I don’t know where.

Comments: A rectangular shawl of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net. Some needle-made fillings in flower centers- mainly rings and knots, sometimes in grid patterns. A naturalistic later 19th c design with a wide border running around the whole piece.  The motifs seem a little heavy, and there doesn’t seem to be much raised work in the bobbinlace, just a little leaf veining.

Comments: A Beds shawl collar. These are often found in this configuration – a long narrow triangular floral Beds core edged with a plaited border. Comments: A handkerchief, 3 collars and two other pieces of Honiton. A nice grouping, most snails/slugs design, but the little thing in the upper right corner looks more advanced. So does the fragment in the upper right corner and the collar in the lower right corner. The handkerchief has quite a nice design, and the brides have a wider, woven look.

Note the single large Point de Gaze flowers with no mesh, and the drooping bobbinlace flowers with small sprigs.  Only gimp work in the bobbin lace, giving it a bit of a Bruges look. The bobbinlace is rather openly woven, with some fraying of the gimp where it has been cut.
Condition:
Modifications:  Can see the ends so can’t tell if they are cut.
Damage:  Nothing obvious from the few photos.
Soilage:  A few tiny brown spots, but these might just be shadows.

Comments: A Maltese border with typical teardrop undulations. These are alternating with filled with woven leaf grids, and Maltese crosses. Unusual in that it appears to be made of linen, not silk.
Condition:
Modifications:  Both ends seem to be cut.
Damage:  Seller cites a few scraggly threads.
Soilage:  Seller cites some age discoloration, some very light spots.

Comments: A narrow border of Bucks.  Looking at this piece you can see why people sometimes call this ‘thread lace’.  It looks like a simple little border that a lacemaker would have turned out in yards and yards, then it got cut off by the dealer each week on ‘cutoff day’. Nothing fancy, just a charming piece.
Condition:
Modifications:  Hard to see the ends, but at least one is cut.
Damage:  Some scattered breaks along the top.

Offered by: Ebay seller amberfarleigh, Richmond, N. Yorkshire, United Kingdom
Comments: A high quality Venise collar with matching cuffs.
Condition:
Modifications: Someone needs to write a comprehensive book on Venise lace identification, since it can be so difficult to tell origin in these pieces.  The ring chains at the centers of the flowers are a Belgian characteristic, and the way the cordonnet is handled could also be Belgian, although the occasional raised sculpting looks French. However the way the rings along the edges are treated looks more Italian to me. The picots and loops on the Brides look more like French Point Colbert.  This is an interesting set, I like the variations in the clothwork. Overall from the ‘gros point’ design inspiration, the decorated clothwork – I’m going Italian here, but with French leanings.
Modifications:  None
Damage:  Seller cites a few repaired brides, minor
Soilage:  The color sees a bit yellowed from the photos, but hard to tell the true color. No spots that I can see.

Comments: This little tape lace is cute with the blue ribbon.  It looks linen, perhaps a Northern Italian or Abruzzi product.  Nice bold design with a little guipure-like tape decoration.

Comments: A Point de Gaze fan with clear amber colored sticks. Raised petal roses, some good decorative ‘modes’, and note especially the large areas or picoted ring and cross fillings.   Relief in fans sometimes doesn’t work so well because they have to be folded, but here it seems OK.
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage:  Nothing obvious from the photos – note the mesh is intact.  Sicks seem in good shape, probably because they appear to be all in one piece along their lengths.

Comments: A three-layer Maltese collar. Outer is a series of flowers, along the neck is the wheat ear woven leaf vertical motif. Center is mats of woven leaves with Maltese crosses done in guipure. A typical design for a collar, well executed.
Condition:
Modifications:  None

Comments: A Duchesse handkerchief with monogrammed initials. No needlelace, which by convention gives it the name Duchesse de Bruges, although the places this could have been made are endless.  The bobbinlace is well done with both rolled raised work and elements laid on top of halfstitch.  Irregular picoted brides. The design is good, but repeats in the corners and centers of each side – a little more innovation could have happened.  Still, a bold, good looking piece.
Condition:
Modifications:  None

Comments: A Duchesse dress front. It has the look of the Duchesse ‘necklaces’ you sometimes see (http://tinyurl.com/mt3ctbq has an example). I’m guessing this has been mounted on a tulle backing for stability – the piece should be able to stand on its own. The design is fairly simple, a garland of nicely done flowers and leaves with a little raised work in the neckline. No needlelace
Condition:
Modifications:  Suspect the tulle is a later addition.
Damage:  Nothing obvious from the photos.

Comments: I wrote a collecting article about Delft lacemakers http://tinyurl.com/7p2p8bo. This one is a little plain – usually they have Dutch scenes painted on the skirts. Comments: I’ll put these two collections of motifs, one Honiton set, one Beds set, together.  The Honiton motifs are very clean, well done, ready to apply to anythng.  The motifs are a little rounded, no sharp points, and nicely worked.  You will like the initials, especially if your name starts with ‘E’.  The butterfly set are basically Beds work, the bottom left one finished a little clumsily, but overall interesting designs.  These were sold this way, ready to apply onto anything you like.  Normally you see tourist Point de Gaze butterflies, so it’s nice to see them in different techniques.

Comments: A Honiton Point dress front with bird figures, thistles and roses. The mesh is needle-made. The design is roughly symmetric, still a little of that Honiton scatter. Motifs a little out of the snails/slugs style, nicely done with good fillings. I especially like the neckline treatment.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse collar. Raised roses on the Point de Gaze inserts.  Nice grid of decorative ‘mode’ stitches toward the points, unusual for a piece this small. Looks like there might be some raised work in the bobbinlace too. Nice piece, well worked.
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage:  Nothing obvious from photos, although no closeups.

Comments: A narrow Mechlin border, Louis XV design, mid 18th c. Quatrefoil and other fillings, fairly naturalistic flowers. The undulating bands are quite wide, well filled. At only 2″ wide, I think this is more delicate than it appears in the photos.
Condition:
Modifications:  Both ends cut.  One join.

Comments: A very long flounce of bobbin and needle application on machine net. The needle-made roses are pure Point de Gaze with raised petals, very naturalistic. Their stems and leaves are bobbin made – I’ve never seen this before.  The lower more Duchesse border is rather conventional, and no tulle shows through as backing. Almost a marriage between different laces.  Small sprigs used as the occasional esprit n the upper ground.  Quite an interesting piece.
Condition:
Modifications:  Both ends cut.  One join.
Damage:  Nothing obvious from photos, but these are limited for such a long piece.
Soilage: General discoloration and some localized brown spotting.

Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A long, wide Point de Gaze border, very naturalistic design. Raised petal roses in a variety of forms. Definitely a high end market piece. The decorative ‘mode’ fillings are precise and well executed – largely confined to the architectural connections between repeats.  The roundels connecting these bands are quite elaborate.  The raised work on the roses ad other flowers is so 3-D that pieces are folding back into space. The footedge is decorated, which is unusual for Pt de G, and note the incongruity of the rather conventional engrelure attached.  Overall an exceptional piece.
Condition:
Modifications:  The one end I can see doesn’t look cut. Point de Gaze is assembled in pieces, so terminations are often irregular.
Damage:  Looks pristine from the photos.
Soilage: Cream patina, no sign of spotting from the photos.

Comments: A tablepiece of Duchesse, with initialed monogram in Venise needlelace.  Rolled raised work forming leaf veins.  This was probably part of a wedding trousseau.  There’s a lot going on in this design, rather crowded.
Condition:
Modifications:  None, but probably part of a larger set.

Comments: A Bruges Bloemwerk collar with two different plaited grounds. Near the neckline is a rectangular picoted grid, near the outside brides are irregularly spaced. The work is tightly done – note the single windows in the flower petals. The design symmetric with quite a nice presence. Rolled ribs define some of the leaves, and there are island and tally fillings in the flower centers. This is a very good example of this type of work.

Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A fairly deep border of Blonde de Caen, from France.  This lace is famous for the contrast of the heavy motifs and the very light mesh, which can also be its undoing in condition. Here the design fills the space quite well, it is meant to hold a slight ruffle. Note the elaborate esprits in the ground, and some extra effort to contrast the heavy border with lighter small halfstitch leaves. also note the little diamonds in the centers of the honeycomb areas, which is a bit unusual.
Condition:
Modifications:  I can’t see the ends in the photos, probably cut since it is a short length.
Damage:  The mesh looks a bit strange along the top, pulled, or maybe some repair? Hard to tell. It isn’t consistent with the rest of the mesh. Might be a separate piece joined by racroc.
Soilage:  Looks quite clean from the photos.

Comments: 2 section of a Maltese border. This is a typical pattern of teardrops separated by heart-shaped outlines. The trail looks almost like a tape lace, nicely convoluted. The squared brides between motifs are unusual.
Condition:
Modifications:  Cut into two pieces, both cut on ends. traces of cloth on one edge.

Comments: A guipure collar. It doesn’t look like Beds to me, especially with the little islands in the mesh next to the neckline. The Design of the center flower with combined half and whole stitch looks Belgian. But the occasional use of the gimp looks more French.  I’m puzzled on origin here, but no question the design is very good, and quite naturalistic.

Comments: A lappet scarf of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net. Some tiny needlelace accents in flower centers., and there are two rather large needlelace flower at the lappet ends. The bobbinlace is small and delicate, quite well made, raised rolls and edges. Good naturalistic design, note wave of flowers along the connecting band. Not the highest quality of this lace, but getting there.  Small, good pieces of applique like this aren’t too common.

Comments: An alb flounce and cuffs of guipure bobbinlace with a rose ground mesh. All three pieces are in circular form, ready to attach. It looks like a French or Spanish guipure, typical of these larger pieces, although I can’t spot the specific place of manufacture. The large flowers have no gimp, and note the windows in the petal work.  I’m thinking the cuffs are pieces cut from the larger original flounce.

Comments: A Honiton handkerchief, advanced design with large areas of woven tally fillings. Nice tightly woven roses, almost resembling Ghent work.  A higher end market product,  more resembling the more structured contemporary Brussels designs – also note the little ‘islands’ where the mesh brides meet; more a Belgian characteristic.

Comments: A Honiton handkerchief with elaborate white embroidered monogram. Quite an elaborate set of medallions in the centers and corners.  A higher end market piece.

Comments: A Honiton guipure lappet scarf.  I like the clean lines of this piece. The motifs are slightly snails/slugs style, and have the scattered English flower garden feel that you see so often in Honiton. Interesting flowers that I can’t identify, they almost look in side view, and you can clearly see the tape winding back and forth to build up the flower. Good tally fillings, occasional raised ribs and other raised work.

Comments: A Gros Point flounce of varying width. There are several different edgings around the piece, one of which looks like a narrow Genoese insertion. The needlelace motifs have the high relief edges, fairly simply decorated. Lots of interesting groundwork variation over large areas, perhaps a sign of an earlier piece.  Note the highly decorated brides typical of the era. The motifs have been reassembled, as was so typical of 19th c adaptations, and many of the brides have been replaced.
Condition:
Modifications:  A reassembled piece.
Damage:  ?The motifs look in good condition, just general age wear.

Comments: A handkerchief of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. A few simple needlelace fillings.  The lace is quite narrow (unusual for an applique handkerchief, normally the lace is wider), with tightly woven motifs filling the space well. Rather short repeat.
Condition:
Modifications:  None

Comments: A Burano needlelace edging, perhaps for a handkerchief, cut on one side, perhaps to adapt for a collar. This is a ‘classic’ Burano design, large swirling flowers and leaves, no esprits in the ground, and a variety of decorative fillings.  The cordonnet in Burano is always couched on.  Good regular work, with a bit of a mechanical appearance that you often find in  Burano.

Comments: Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw, illustrated in “Bobbin and Needle Laces”. Described as “Brussels Duchesse”. If it is a Belgian piece it is very unusual.  Note the raised tallies on cloth stitch in the end flowers and acorns, and the rather unusual raised work on halfstitch in the buds. Yet there are some islands joining Brides – more of a Bruges technique. I’ll call it Belgian, but quite unusual, and difficult to attribute. At first glance it almost looks like a Floral Beds piece, but obviously is not a continuous lace, so that’s not a viable option.

Modifications:  None
Damage:  Nothing obvious.

Comments: A wide Point de Gaze flounce with raised petal roses, and elaborate decorative ‘mode’ fillings. Note the multiple raised rings in the centers of the upper flowers. The design is so dense that there is little left over for the mesh. For later 19th c elaborate romantic Belgian needlelaces, it doesn’t get much better than this, and there’s a lot of interest in this piece.
Condition:
Modifications:  I think one end is cut, the other termination looks more original.

Comments: A flat Point de Gaze border with a primary motif of daffodils. Technically it is excellent. Design-wise it isn’t quite the quality of the previous piece, but still a high end market item. For example, they might have done something a bit more innovate with the decorative ‘mode’ fillings, and the flowers and leaves look a little flat.  I do like the centers of the daffodil trumpets with the different stitch pattern.

Comments: A Point de Gaze handkerchief, no raised work. It’s a figural piece with the birds, which is quite unusual. The design is very deep and almost completely fills the space. Only a few very simple rings, chains and zigzags used as decorative ‘mode fillings’. I’m always amazed at home much Point de Gaze can do with basically two stitches – the mesh and the clothwork.

Comments: A set of Alençon lappets with the connecting cap back band. Quite remarkable that the band matches the lappet design. Just wish the cap back were also there. The design is an early Louis XVI, with a lighter border and brides tortillée inside.  Very small motifs.  This type of design comes up fairly often, here the edge is a little more complex than usually seen.  Lappets like this are usually quite long.
Condition:
Modifications:  Note the zigzag join of lappets and band, which means that the lappet tops have been cut.  This is minor considering the presence of the band.
Damage:  A few pulls and pinholes in the central mesh.  Engrelure in the band is a little frayed.
Soilage:  Some small localized brown spotting.

Comments: A small table cover of pieced bobbinlace with what looks like a point ground bobbin-made mesh. You see this occasionally, usually in smaller more delicate pieces, and I don’t really know where it comes from. The bobbinlace is rather Duchesse, maybe with Ghent refinements, and some simple but appropriate fillings. The design is quite effective for this type of object, although the motifs at the cloth edge look a little crowded. But I don’t think it’s been cut from a larger piece.

Comments: Ex. coll. Pat EArnshaw.  An impressive looking rectangular shawl of Blonde, probable Caen. The large motifs extend even to the fillings of the middle ground. Comments: Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw. A wide border of bobbinlace which has been made in strips so it is likely early 19th c, perhaps English.  The ground is Kat stitch. You can see the strips sewn together clearly in this piece.  Whether this is an assembled piece, or originally meant to be like this is the question. Something like this bears a little resemblance to Levey’s “A History of Lace”, plate 344, described as an early French blonde.  Interesting, puzzling piece.

Comments: A black lace bonnet veil, but the photos aren’t close enough to see what it is. Since it looks like it is joined in strips, bobbinlace is a reasonable guess, however the mesh itself has the diagonal gran associated with machine lace.  Whatever, it has a kind of Blonde de Caen design with a heavy lower border, and large sprigs in the ground.  The decorated top edge is a little unusual for a bonnet veil.
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage:  Lots of holes in the mesh., some splits along join lines.

Raised petal roses, two layers, arranged almost in a garland around the neckline.  There are some areas of Point de Gaze mesh, but much has no mesh; one of those ‘Point de Gaze guipure’ pieces.  Interesting outside border on the roses, like it’s wrapped, not buttonholed.

Comments: Louis XIV Mechlin lappets, joined at the tops. Design is interrupted where they are cut.  These lappets are in exceptional condition.  There are also some variations of typical Mechlin quatrefoil fillings, some almost modified to diamonds.
The more I stare at these the more puzzled I am. It almost looks like the outside edge is added separately, although when I look closely there’s no obvious join. The designs don’t quite match.  I’d need to get these under a microscope to tell more.
