Ebay Alerts! Twenty-five items – October 3, 2013

http://tinyurl.com/qgqnbb7 Antique Irish crochet Georgian? lace collar
Size:  13″ neckline, 36″ outer edge, ~7″ deep
Starting Price: 4.99 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 4, 2013 12:03:51 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller vickysilk, somerset, United Kingdom
Comments: An Irish Crocht collar.  Rose of Sharon on the inside, heavy motifs on the outside edge, which is quite a nice contrast. The motif work is tight with some raised elements – I especially like the work done with rings.  Picots basically look like chained loops, consistent with the technique of the Rose of Sharon portion.  Seller is showing a similar collar, see Ebay #200969080793.
Condition: Modifications:  None
Damage:  One broken bride
Soilage:  Looks a little dry, quite stained, especially along the other edge.

190915106561   Sold for 25.00 GBP, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/q2q5h2a ANTIQUE MALTESE HEIRLOOM SILK HAND LACE CAPE VEIL INTRICATE DESIGN CROSS c1890
Size:  28.5″ x 74″
Starting Price: 69.99 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 5, 2013 11:02:04 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller abfabs05, East Anglia, United Kingdom
Comments: A black silk Maltese mantilla – an asymmetric diamond shaped headpiece with lappet ends. It has a rather typical design – the outer border is an alternating pattern of flowers and Maltese crosses.  Inside is a ‘cloth-like’ pattern consisting of rows of medallions of crosses surrounded by small flowers of woven leaves. Intervening spaces are filled with diamond-shaped patterns of woven leaves.
Condition: Modifications:  None
Damage:  Seller cites a few broken brides and loose ends – minor.
Soilage:  Looks clean and reasonably well blocked.

331032401860   Sold for 105.00 GBP, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/qe6lv9d Antique Table Doily Square Lace Tenerife Drawnwork White Linen Centerpiece
Size:  12″ square
Starting Price: $13.00, $20.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: Oct 5, 2013 11:51:56 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller breckcarter, Markham, Ontario, Canada
Comments: A handkerchief or doily of Mexican Drawnwork. I was especially drawn to this one because of the double row of drawnwork, and the innovative designs in the corners. And it does look like it is made of linen, which is a little unusual for Mexican work of this size.  This is a badly researched lace, which is unfortunate since so much of it is very beautiful.
Condition: Modifications:  None
Damage:  One minor pinhole in the cloth.
Soilage:  Ivory color, wrinkled as though used and/or washed.

251348509762   Sold for $20.00, Buy-it-Now exercised.

http://tinyurl.com/o4zmn4p BINCHE BOBBIN LACE LAPPETS OF THE FINEST QUALITY Ca 1750
Size:  12″ square
Starting Price: $10.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Oct 5, 2013 15:00:02 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller eastayton, London, England, United Kingdom
Comments: A pair of Valenciennes lappets ~1740.  It has the 5-hole ground, one of the many ground variations seen in this lace. Excellent flowing design with different patterns in each of the open spaces. It still retains extensive shaded work using whole stitch against half stitch background, and the delineation of the pattern by line-drawing is clearly defined. This is one of my top favorite laces.
Condition: Modifications:  Both cut at the tops.
Damage:  A little frayed in isolated spots along outer edge, see photo #7 of the bottom ends.  Occasional worn spot and a few tiny holes, isolated and minor.
Soilage:  Some minor staining, see last photo. Looks like this contributed to one small worn spot.

181219952872   Sold for $2,039.99, 5 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/qakbwwl BRUSSELS POINT DE GAZE NEEDLELACE Ca 1880 3 metres
Size:  3.5″ x 120″
Starting Price: $10.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Oct 5, 2013 15:o5:57 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller eastayton, London, England, United Kingdom
Comments: An impressive narrow, very long border of Point de Gaze.  No raised work, but this is the type that doesn’t need any. The repeat is quite short, and the daffodil pattern unusual – I like the stitch they used to fill the daffodil cup, haven’t seen that before in Point de Gaze.  Well done decorative ‘mode’ fillings, although they are a little standard.  The whole piece depends on design and is quite effective.
Condition: Modifications:  Cut at both ends.
Damage:  Nothing obvious in the lace from the photos, and seller makes no condition comments. A few minor defects with the engrelure, but that is trivial.
Soilage:  Looks very clean, perhaps unused.

181223837622   Sold for $326.00, 9 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/o8ja6j2 MECHLIN BOBBIN LACE LAPPETS Ca 1760
Size:  3.5″ x 43″
Starting Price: $10.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Oct 5, 2013 15:15:28 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller eastayton, London, England, United Kingdom
Comments: Mid 18th c Mechlin lappets, joined at the top ends. Typical Louis XV design, just a little plain with the large areas of clothwork. They do have some varied fillings, snowflakes, and some interesting bars on the outer edges just above the ends. Typical quatrefoil decorations that are often found in Mechlin are included on a halfstitch background.
Condition: Modifications:  The area of the join is not shown so I can’t tell if the tops have been cut.
Damage:  A lot of fraying on the outside picot edges.  A few tiny holes throughout.  One repair that looks to be ~2″ long.
Soilage:  Looks quite clean.  Good closeup photos.

181220546733   Sold for $870.00, 6 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/kcjjtd8 VENETIAN GROS POINT NEEDLELACE Ca 1670
Size:  not given
Starting Price: $10.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Oct 5, 2013 15:20:58 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller eastayton, London, England, United Kingdom
Comments: What looks like a mid 17th c Gros Point with beautiful clothwork and highly sculpted edges. Good variation of design in the clothwork – this is an earlier rather plain but highly sophisticated work.  There’s been much discussion recently (and an actual conference on the subject) about dating Italian Gros Points and how to distinguish later copies. The English did some amazing 19th century copies.  So without some in depth study it’s difficult to assign an exact date to this piece – but my first instinct says it’s an early piece.
Condition: Modifications:  Cut down the center – looks like part is missing. The motifs have been rearranged from some other piece.
Damage:  Motifs are quite well intact.
Soilage:  Looks quite clean from the photos.

181220541813   $36.00, 2 bidders, reserve not met.

http://tinyurl.com/mupdmeq MECHLIN BOBBIN LACE LAPPETS Ca 1760
Size:  3″ x 24″ each
Starting Price: $10.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Oct 5, 2013 15:25:50 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller eastayton, London, England, United Kingdom
Comments: Two matching Mechlin lappets, ~1760. Note how the design repeats along the length of each lappet – quite different from the pair discussed above. They do have the typical quatrefoil fillings, some elongated into a kind of lattice structure. Not much variation in the clothwork or other fillings, and the whole design has a light look more typical of slightly later 18th c products.
Condition: Modifications:  They look intact
Damage:  Two repairs to the mesh – a little messy.  Occasional pinholes and pulls in the mesh.
Soilage:  Looks quite clean.

181221359170   Sold for $770.00, 5 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/m9kqel8 BRUSSELS BOBBIN LACE SQUARE ENDED LAPPETS Ca 1720
Size:  3.75″ x 46″
Starting Price: $10.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Oct 5, 2013 15:35:12 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller eastayton, London, England, United Kingdom
Comments: Two lappets of Brussels bobbinlace with brides – ~1720. Joined at the top ends. Good snowflake fillings, also a kind of filling that forms geometric patterns with tiny tallies. Raised edges are used to emphasize the design, not just indiscriminately. Great design of elaborate flowers and cornucopia.
Condition:
Modifications:  No photo of the join area so I can’t see if the tops have been cut.
Damage:  I think there might be a repair at one end, it doesn’t quite match the other one. Some wear and fraying in spots, although for the age it isn’t bad.  A few other small repairs.
Soilage:  Looks quite clean.

181221381633   Sold for $790.00, 6 bidders.

Starting Price: $10.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Oct 5, 2013 15:40:53 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller eastayton, London, England, United Kingdom
Comments: Two lappets of Mechlin, ~1750.  Interesting typical Louis XV design, actually quite elaborate.  Varied fillings, good naturalistic floral design. Echos past glories of this lace.
Condition:
Modifications:  Both cut at tops.
Damage:  Very frayed and worn, lots of holes.
Soilage:  Looks pretty clean.

Starting Price: $99.00
Auction ends: Oct 6, 2013 07:17:42 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller jabezzz, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, United States
Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges border (no needlelace). Some really interesting raised petals on some of the flower petals.  A bit beyond the standard type of lace you usually see.
Condition:
Modifications:  Both cut at both ends.
Damage:  Basically intact from the photos.
Soilage:  Seller cites one small stain.

Starting Price: $250.00
Auction ends: Oct 6, 2013 07:18:58 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller jabezzz, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, United States
Comments: I’m impressed that the seller got the name of this lace right. Punto Milano is a Belgian bobbinlace with a needle-made ground – rather a commercial later 19th early 20th century product. Doesn’t always come out that well in design, but this one looks well thought out with some interesting fillings.  Not exactly sure what the form is – just a little scarf?
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage:  Nothing that I can see from the photos.
Soilage:  Looks quite clean.

Auction ends: Oct 6, 2013 09:08:15 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, United States
Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges lappet scarf – with some tiny needlelace fillings in flower centers. There’s a really intriguing bobbinlace filling on the ends, but photos not close enough to see how it is made. The motifs are a bit beyond the standard Duchesse genera, actually a nice looking piece.
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage:  A few broken and frayed brides.
Soilage:  Cream color, discoloration at center. Stiffness might be a past wash/starch.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, United States
Comments: A narrow scarf of tambour embroidery on machine net. There are areas of close and loosely spaced stitches, giving some shading to the piece.  Good design, fills the space well. This kind of embroidery is often associated with Belgium.
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage:  A little wear in areas of the picot edge, minor.
Soilage:  Looks quite clean from the photos.

Starting Price: $45.00
Auction ends: Oct 6, 2013 09:47:31 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller atelier1900, Galillard, France
Comments: Two short border sections of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net. Good delicate pattern with a short repeat of two flowers, nicely worked. Esprits in the ground. This is a lace meant to be ruffled.
Condition:
Modifications:  cut on all ends. The engrelure doesn’t look applied to well, some slight bunching at the top edge.
Damage:  I think there might be one well done repair to the tulle. The net itself looks quite well intact.
Soilage:  Can’t tell the color from the photos.

Starting Price: 14.95 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 6, 2013 10:08:07 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A bertha of Duchesse de Bruxelles. Raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze inserts. The bobbinlace is a little flat looking, more on the Bruges side.  It has a nice scattered flower garden look with just enough asymmetry in the repeats to be quite charming.
Condition:
Modifications:  None.
Damage:  Seller cites occasional small repair and broken bride.
Soilage:  Pale ivory color.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: An Irish Crochet dress front with shamrock, thistle and rose motifs. Clones knots for picots. The thistle heads have an unusual raised knobby appearance, also done with Clones knots, I believe.  Interesting, tightly worked small motifs.
Condition:
Modifications:  None.
Damage:  Can’t see anything obvious from the photos.
Soilage:  Soft old white color.

Condition:
Modifications:  None.

Comments: A bertha of Duchesse de Bruxelles with raised petal roses in the nine Point de Gaze inserts.  Standard Duchesse design, some raised work on the C-shaped borders to the needlelace inserts.
Condition:
Modifications:  There seems to be a little bit of backing along the neck edge center front. A few stray threads in some motifs along the neckline.
Damage:  Nothing obvious that I can see frm the photos.

Starting Price: 68.00 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 6, 2013 14:13:46 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller georginanntiques, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A fan of Youghal needlelace. Fans in this lace are quite rare. Note the bone sticks with a gold monogram inlay.  The whole piece does look a little odd, as if the ‘fuente’  (trying to use correct terminology) is a little too large.  I wonder if these sticks have been cut down at one point, but there’s no closeups of the back side in order to tell. The lace design is very typical of Youghal, with well defined foliage and some interesting fillings. Note the unusual lower border of the lace.
Condition:
Modifications:  Fan sticks modified? Not sure.
Damage:  Repair to a guard stick.  Lace looks OK, which is unusual for delicate Youghal pieces.
Soilage:  Some discoloration along a probably glue spot on the back of a guardstick. Other soiling on the right side and lower half.

Starting Price: $28.00
Auction ends: Oct 6, 2013 16:13:12 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller marshamanchester, Gardiner, Maine, United States
Comments: A handkerchief with an interesting quoted history. It says it was purchased at the Royal School of Needlework in London (original box is included), and there’s a metal seal which usually indicates the place it was made. I don’t recognize the emblem on the seal. The lace itself looks like a French Lille, and there is a sticker saying ‘Made in France’. The lace itself has been cut to fit the corners.  I’m guessing that the lace might be older, but the hankie itself is of more modern manufacture.
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage:  None that I can see from the photos.
Soilage:  Looks very clean.

Comments: A modern Carrickmacross handkerchief – you could buy these in the US in the past few decades. It is a very light muslin appliqued on machine net, with some needlerun fillings.
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage:  None that I can see from the photos.

Comments: Brussels needlelace applique on machine net.  Pieces like this with just needlelace are fairly rare. This one has a good floral pattern, scalloped edge, and esprits in the ground. The needlelace fillings are quite simple.  It has a good, delicate appearance.
Condition:

Damage:  Occasional broken mesh, very minor.

Ebay Alerts! Fourteen items – September 29, 2013

http://tinyurl.com/md2yzxx ANTIQUE VICTORIAN BLACK CHANTILLY LACE SHAWL / FICHU / VEIL
Size:  34″ x 74″
Starting Price: 9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 1, 2013 06:37:00 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller the-linen-cupboard, Oxfordshire, UK, United Kingdom
Comments: A Chantilly mantilla headcover. One point is deeper than the other to indicate the direction this should go on the head. Good romantic later 19th c design, fills the space well, although no esprits.
Condition: Modifications:  None
Damage:  A number of small holes in the mesh, no obvious racroc splits, but I think some of the holes are along those lines.
Soilage:  A little wrinkled, some fold lines.

190911945400   Sold for 51.00 GBP, 5 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/kvzq33j Antique Irish Crochet Lae 21.5 inch Table Round Doilie
Size:  21.5″ diameter
Starting Price: $65.00
Auction ends: Oct 1, 2013 15:59:39 PDT
Offered by: Ebay avivb, Raynham, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: An Irish Crochet Point (meaning the ground is needle-made) large doily. The motifs are a geometric style with a good variety of forms. It still retains some elements of the three-lobed sprays you so often see in IC, and the center motif has 5 lobes. Raised work on the roses. The work isn’t completely tight – I think it’s a later piece, maybe early 20th c.
Condition: Modifications:  None
Damage:  Nothing I can see from the photos.
Soilage:  Seller thinks it is tea-died. With some additional small discolorations

310755655721   No bids.

Starting Price: $19.99
Auction ends: Oct 1, 2013 17:57:03 PDT
Offered by: Ebay smketer2, Cupertino, California, United States
Comments: A Maltese collar, typical 3-layer construction. Outer edge is alternating sun and Maltese cross roundels.  The neckedge is simple plating. The center portion has a grid of leaves with three Maltese crosses done in guipure.
Condition: Modifications:  None
Damage:  Some minor fraying in localized spots on the outer edge. Seller cites two places with broken threds, but they aren’t obvious from the photos.
Soilage:  Looks quite clean.

221288808050   Sold for $19.99, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/lusvgga ANTIQUE LACE-ORNATE WHITEWORK HANDKERCHIEF
Size:  ~11.5″ square
Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Oct 2, 2013 08:58:32 PDT
Offered by: Ebay mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A whitework handkerchief with fine embroidery and lots of decorative ‘mode’ fillings.  Lace collectors often include something like this in their collections because of the fine needlelace fillings.  Also has a well-done three letter monogram.  Probably French.
Condition: Modifications:  None
Damage:  None that I can see.
Soilage:  One tiny age stain on edge.

151131878780   Sold for $45.00, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/m93ago4 ANTIQUE LACE-ORNATE BOBBIN LACE PLACEMAT SET W/BIRDS
Size:  runner: 32″ x 16.5″.  mats: 17″ x 11″
Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Oct 2, 2013 11:05:07 PDT
Offered by: Ebay mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A set of 4 placemats and one runner of rather elaborate bobbin tape lace with bird figures. It’s not really familiar, but I”m guessing an Italian takeoff on Milanese lace. It’s a curious combination – the openwork parts of the tape are very loosely done, while the clothwork in the figures is very tight.  Quite an interesting set.
Condition: Modifications:  None
Damage:  Seller cites a few tiny minor openings
Soilage:  Looks very clean.

390669429901   $51.00, 2 bidders, reserve not met.

Auction ends: 3 days 22 hours from 9/29/2013 8:28 AM MST
Offered by: Ebay linen-cupboard, Crawcrook, Tyne and Wear, United Kingdom
Comments: A Maltese handkerchief with 4 layers. Outer border of flowers and corner crosses.  Inner band and another separating band of simple plated mesh.  Woven crosses and large petal guipure flowers in the center section.  Overall a typical arrangement showing a little variation from what is normally seen.
Condition: Modifications:  None
Damage:  A few pinholes in the center cloth.
Soilage:  Looks very clean.

400566113593   Unsold as of 3:28 PM MST, 10/2/2013.

Starting Price: $95.00
Auction ends: Oct 04, 2013 09:58:18 PDT
Offered by: Ebay atelier1900, Galliard, France
Comments: A set of Honiton dress pieces – 2 cuffs, 2 lengths, and a dress front attached to some tulle. All snails/slugs style, but not matching. Designs are a little thrown-together. One of the borders has some interesting fern leaf designs.
Condition: Modifications:  borders cuts at ends.  Dress front attached to tulle.
Damage:  Occasional broken bride.
Soilage:  Seller cites some tiny spots of yellowing.

Auction ends: Oct 04, 2013 10:07:28 PDT
Offered by: Ebay atelier1900, Galliard, France
Comments: A Honiton handkerchief – snails/slugs style. Good tally fillings.  The design is rather standard for this type of lace.  A good middle market product.
Condition: Modifications:  none
Damage:  None that I can see from photos.
Soilage:  A few small spots

Starting Price: $75.00
Auction ends: Oct 04, 2013 10:33:35 PDT
Offered by: Ebay atelier1900, Galliard, France
Comments: A triangular dress insert of Duchesse de Bruxelles.  Raised petal roses on the Point de Gaze inserts.  No raised work on the bobbinlace, giving it a bit of a Bruges look. Overall an effective design.
Condition: Modifications:  Some silk backing beneath the Point de Gaze at the upper part of the insert.
Damage:  None that I can see from the photos, point de gaze mesh looks intact.
Soilage:  Unwashed, few tiny yellow spots.

Offered by: Ebay atelier1900, Galliard, France
Comments: A Point de Gaze collar/dress front, no raised work, but that’s just fine. The motifs are in a rather solid plain linen stitch, and there are some good decorative ‘mode’ fillings. The design does a lot with some simple techniques.  It all looks very crisp and clean.
Condition: Modifications:  None
Damage:  None
Soilage:  Unwashed, some localized yellowing.

Starting Price: 14.95 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 04, 2013 11:09:12 PDT
Offered by: Ebay derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A deep cream colored silk Maltese bertha, 4 part construction. Outer edge is a row of alternating Maltese crosses and flowers.  Next is the same, but larger, with additional guipure work to fill in corners. Next is  a row of vertical wheat ears using woven leaves.  Neckline is a simple row of crossed woven leaves.
Condition: Modifications:  None
Damage:  Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage:  Looks very clean.

Starting Price: 14.95 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 04, 2013 11:12:56 PDT
Offered by: Ebay derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: Probably Brugge Bloemwerk border, fairly deep, very collectible length. The design is a short repeat of leaves and simple flowers with a few simple fillings in flower centers and along the outside edge.  Raised work of rolled edges, picoted plaited brides. Nicely done clothwork with some half-stitch shading.  I find it a little plain with the large areas of undecorated clothwork.
Condition: Modifications:  One end cut, not sure about the other end.
Damage:  Seller cites a few small areas of damage, I can’t see them in the photos.
Soilage:  Seller calls it a soft old white color, and says it has been washed by a previous owner.

231063788902   Sold for 128.00 GBP, 8 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/l7c7rmo Antique/vintage Irish crochet lace collar
Size:  13.5″ neckline, 4.5″ deep
Starting Price: 14.95 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 04, 2013 11:16:19 PDT
Offered by: Ebay derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: An Irish Crochet dress front.  Small, fairly tightly worked motifs with lots of raised work. Mesh looks like it has crocheted loops for picots.  I like the scattered design, with just enough symmetry on the outer edge to contain the design within.
Condition: Modifications:  none
Damage:  None that I can see from the photos.
Soilage:  Some discoloration to neck edge. As photographed it looks very white, perhaps a sign of earlier bleaching?

231063790472   Sold for 78.00 GBP, 5 bidders.

Starting Price: 14.95 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 04, 2013 11:24:13 PDT
Offered by: Ebay derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: An lappet scarf of Point de Gaze, no raised work.  Simple fillings, nothing elaborate, but it does a lot with a few raised rings. This piece depends on the design itself which is very good, quite elegant.
Condition: Modifications:  none
Damage:  Two small holes.
Soilage:  Dark cream color.

331033903075   Sold for 94.00 GBP, 12 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/qyqbmw2 A 19TH CENTURY BRUSSELS LACE BERTHA COLLAR – Hand Made
Size:  36″ neckline, outer edge 77″, 4.75″ deep
Starting Price: 20.00 GBP
Auction ends: Sep 28, 2013 12:44:24 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller garden*hill, Reading, United Kingdom
Comments: A bertha of a Belgian pieced lace, perhaps Bruges Bloemwerk. The motifs are a bit more elaborate than is normally found, but the technique is familiar.  Plaited, picoted brides with the typical ‘islands’ where they join. There is some nice decoration in the clothwork in some of the flowers.
Condition: Modifications:  None
Damage:  None that I can see from photos.
Soilage:  One small rust spot, minor.

190909122085   Sold for 36.05 GBP, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/mtjxnj8 A 19TH CENTURY BRUSSELS POINT DE GAZE LACE BERTHA COLLAR & CUFF – Hand Made
Size:  43″ neckline, outer edge 80″, 6.5″ deep. Cuff: 9.25″ x 3.5″
Starting Price:  25.00 GBP
Auction ends: Sep 28, 2013 13:10:24 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller garden*hill, Reading, United Kingdom
Comments: A bertha of Point de Gaze, along with a cuff of the same that does not match the pattern. The raised flower petals in the bertha are unusual, with some diamond windows in the clothwork. This, along with the naturalistic but uncrowded design, and extensive decorative ‘mode’ fillings are all the sign of a better manufacturer. The cuff is nicely done, but more conventional in design.
Condition: Modifications:  None to either.
Damage:  bertha – Some pinholes in the mesh, small hole near center. Looks like one flower missing center back along the neckline.  cuff – 3 small holes in the mesh.
Soilage:  Some staining on one of the scallops and a flower on the bertha. Cuff looks good.

190909140674   Sold for 102.00 GBP, 6 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/kk4bbvn Classic Deep border of 19th C. BURANO Italian Needle Lace Collctors YARD PLUS
Size:  1-1/3 yeards, x 6.5″
Starting Price:  $35.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Sep 28, 2013 18:00:04 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: Given that this is finished on all sides, I think it is a narrow scarf.  Classic Burano needlelace, with evidence of the green paper from the original pattern on the back. A good floral pattern with fairly elaborate decorative fillings. Very typical of Burano design thinking – probably an early 20th c piece.
Condition: Modifications:  None
Damage:  Seller cites a few breaks in the mesh
Soilage:  Seller says it could use a bath, which I take to mean probably a little dusty, minor age and/or storage fading.

141059145823   Sold for $225.00, 3 bidders.

Auction ends: Sep 28, 2013 19:33:24 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller greatlace, Palm Beach, Florida, United States
Comments: Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. It’s a simple middle-market design. Note the extra touch with the small sprigs in the upper ground, and lots of raised edges on the motifs.
Condition: Modifications:  Cut at both ends
Damage:  A few pinholes in the tulle, especially near the top border. The tulle itself looks basically unused.
Soilage:  None that I can see from the photos.

221288284208   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/ljbojbf Brussels duchesse mixed lace collar
Size:  not given
Starting Price:  12.99 GBP
Auction ends: Sep 29, 2013 10:15:43 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller 999dogtoby, Bath, United Kingdom
Comments: A collar of Brussels  Duchesse with pointed ends. I think the only needlelace are the decorative ‘mode’ fillings just where the front neckline comes together.  The bobbinlace does have some good raised work. The design is a bit crowded, but it’s a nicely made piece.
Condition: Modifications:  none
Damage:  Only 3 photos without a lot of closeup work, hard to tell, but it basically looks intact.  Some loose threads on parts of the outer edge, which might just be from having been sewn to something, or maybe some fraying?
Soilage:  Raised work on some of the bobbinlace flowers looks twisted, might be a sign of past washing.

290982831407   Sold for 24.00 GBP, 5 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/lwyvmmn Brussels lace tie or lappets
Size:  3-5/8″ max x 20″
Starting Price:  5.99 GBP
Auction ends: Sep 29, 2013 10:29:35 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller 999dogtoby, Bath, United Kingdom
Comments: A short lappet scarf or tie of Brussels bobbinlace appliqued on machine net. Good pattern, filling the space well. A few small needlelace rings used as fillings, and perhaps as esprits in the tulle. Nice picot work all around the edges. Not a really sophisticated design, but it has a very nice presence.
Condition: Modifications:  none
Damage:  Seller cites one minute hole in the tulle.
Soilage:  Color off-white, which is probably just storage aging. Looks unused.

290982840304   Sold for 18.77 GBP, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/k6j8msh C18 Honiton bobbin lace border
Size:  2″ x 20″
Starting Price:  12.99 GBP
Auction ends: Sep 29, 2013 10:49:20 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller 999dogtoby, Bath, United Kingdom
Comments: A narrow border of pieced bobbinlace with droschel ground. Wish there were more of this. The droschel ground seems to follow the design in places, which is more a sign of English Devon work.  And the motifs have a kind of serpentine look that you also see in early English lace. Simple picoted bride fillings, and the raised bars delineating the design are a bit loose. I’ll go with Devon on this one.
Condition: Modifications:  The one end that I can see looks cut and hemmed. Engrelure later.
Damage:  I see a few pulls in the mesh – hard to determine exactly since no closeups in the 2 photos. Actually it looks in quite good shape for the age.
Soilage:  Can’t tell from the photos.

Auction ends: Sep 29, 2013 11:33:13 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller nelliegardnerer, Evanston, Illinois, United States
Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges collar, nicely done, might be Ghent work. No needlelace present.  Note the alternating use of whole and half stitch for shading effects. Some rolled edges on the motifs, and the brides are simple irregular plaits.
Condition: Modifications:  none. Extra threads present from a previous attachment along the neckline.
Damage:  A non-trival break center back along the neck edge.
Soilage:  Looks good, hard to tell the color.

271283016288   Sold for $15.00, 1 bidder.

Starting Price:  42.00 EUR
Auction ends: Sep 29, 2013 11:37:46 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller barrioux, SERMENTIZON, Auvergne, France
Comments: The auction is for the chair only. I know this seller quite well, specializing in lacemaking items from the Haute Loire region.   I wrote about lacemaker’s chairs at http://tinyurl.com/n69h3ux. Generally they are quite low to get the knees up to support the pillow. This is something that also applies to nursing chairs, so identification can be tricky. This one does not have any decoration, but then most lacemaker chairs were quite plain.
Condition: Modifications:  Seat replaced in the 1980’s.
Damage:  Used, but intact.
Soilage:  General age-related patina.

Offered by: Ebay seller jackjason2, Markham, Ontario, Canada
Comments: A lappet scarf of black Maltese – can’t tell if it is silk or something else. It has an unusual set of round motifs throughout the length. Quite a bold looking piece.
Condition: Modifications:  none.
Damage:  Looks like one small repair where a split developed.  Otherwise OK from the photos.
Soilage:  A little wrinkled. Can’t tell much about staining because of the black color.

Auction ends: Sep 29, 2013 16:40:30 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller jabezzz, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, United States
Comments: A Point de Gaze handkerchief edge. It’s not a particularly delicate design, but quite interesting. It has quite a large variety of clothwork variations, and some nice decorative ‘mode’ fillings. Multiple layer petals in the corner roses in very sold clothwork.  It is also rather small for a handkerchief.
Condition: Modifications:  Center cloth missing.
Damage:  I don’t see any problems from the photos.
Soilage:  Looks very clean.

Auction ends: Sep 30, 2013 12:57:53 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller purpletigerblue, Colorado Springs, Colorado, United States
Comments: A ñanduti doily, earlier very fine type.  I’ve seen a number of these on Ebay recently.  It has a very elaborate central motif, and 3 different sol designs surrounding the center. Typical palm leaf edge, and seller says ‘jojoba’ fillers – I think this is the joining grid-like structure. I haven’t heard this term before, I’ll try to research it.  A nice example of the form.
Condition: Modifications:  none
Damage:  I dn’t see any problems from the photos.
Soilage:  Looks clean from the photos.
