Comments: I can only see one end of this border, which looks intact, so I can’t tell if it has been cut from a larger piece or is all original. Rosaline Perlé, and I think the perls are needle-done, although the photos aren’t close enough to tell. Note, no brides, which is a Rosaline variation that can be very impressive in design. The weaving on this one looks just a little loose, and it has that slightly wrinkled washed look. Seller cites a few slight breaks. Generally good condition.

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruxelles collar, nicely shaped. No raised work in the needlelace inserts.  The bobbinlace is complex and well work, quite a good design for the shape.  A few needlelace ‘mode’ decorations, not the line of rings above the Point de Gaze. I don’t see any problems with the condition from the photos, generally very good.

Comments: A large Maltese cream silk shawl collar, same collection as the previous piece. Border treatment of Maltese crosses with grids of woven leaves just inside.  In the center there is good guipure work surrounding some nice flower motifs with crosses inside. Seller cites some age spotting and open places, looks a little worn, or maybe just wrinkled around the edges. Generally good condition.

Comments: Another Maltese piece from the same collection, this one a vest. The design is a kind of patchwork with a square repeat of a large flower of very heavy overlapping woven leaves, triangular guipure in the corners. They match together very nicely.  One Maltese cross on the back with what looks like a crown above. Crosses along all outside edges.  It looks like it was made for this form. One open shoulder seam, basically very good condition.

Comments: And yet another Maltese piece, same seller as above. This one is a triangular dress insert with attached neck choker.  Masses of wide, overlapping woven leaves down the front.  The insert and the choker appear to match.  Looks in generally very good condition, perhaps unused.

Comments: A small Irish Crochet collar, note the very small neck measurement.  The motifs are well made, raised rings in the centers.  The picots in the ground might be Clones knots, hard to tell. The motifs are a bit large for the size of the piece.  Basically very good condition, I don’t see any obvious problems from the photos.

Comments: OK, I’m through with my very vague condition reports, and am trying something different. I’ll make notes in three areas – modifications to the original piece, damage compromising the original work and needing repair, and soilage  which mostly means dirt and stains that can usually be corrected, as well as storage marks, and secondary condition issues from laundering and bleaching. That leaves the comments open just to identify the lace and discuss the design. We’ll see how that goes.
This is a border of Duchesse de Bruges, meaning no needlelace additions. Some raised work on half-stitch ground and good rolled ribs n the leaves.  the design is a little conventional. Note the islands in the picoted brides – a feature often found in Bruges laces.
Condition: Modifications:  one join
Damage:  few loose brides, some small holes, minor
Soilage: some storage discoloration

Comments: I think this is a late 19th century Gros Point, perhaps from the Vienna Lace School. What really gets my attention are the large rings incorporated into the clothwork – you can see something similar on the cover of Clare Browne’s Lace from the Victoria and Albert Museum (see photo below – that is a documented piece from 1880). Not quite as exuberant as the V&A piece, but the basic elements seem to be there. Vienna at this time was in direct competition with Point Colbert in France.  The sculptural quality of the motif raised edges, and the regularity of the clothwork is very good in these pieces.  This is not a well documented type of lace.
Condition:  Modifications:  none
Damage:  Might be a discontinuity at the very top of the photo on the edge.
Soilage: nothing obvious from photos.

Comments: A high end market handkerchief of Belgian needlelace. I think we need to be more careful about terminology, and resist the temptation to label everything Point de Gaze. At the time this was made it would have been called Point de l’Aiguille Belge. This one is quite fine, no raised work, and extensive decorative ‘mode’ fillings. Note the little medallion at the center of each side, unusual, but not unknown.  The design is a bit crowded, and the execution is very good.
Condition:  Modifications:  none. It has been mounted on blue silk.
Damage:  Small holes and pinholes in the mesh, difficult to repair
Soilage: None that I can see from the photos.
