http://tinyurl.com/m28kbvz ANTIQUE 19THC HM PRETTY DELICATE VALENCIENNES LACE FLOUNCE/ WONDERFUL CONDITION
Size: 1.75″ x 66″
Starting Price: $7.00
Auction ends: Jul 6, 2013 10:59:03 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller snakey03rr, Bourbon, Missouri, United States
Comments:  A narrow border of Valenciennes with the square-mesh 19th c plaited ground. The design is quite simple, probably later 19th c or early 20th c. This is a lace meant to edge nightclothes or bed linens. Looks in very good condition from the photos. So often lace like this was removed from some well-used piece, so it’s good to find one so intact.

181167230884   Sold for $31.00, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/nyu2n4t ANTIQUE 19THC HM LOVELY LONG & WIDE FINE VALENCIENNES FLOUNCE/ 155 ” (4+ YARDS!)
Size: 5″ x 155″
Starting Price: $25.00
Auction ends: Jul 6, 2013 15:57:54 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller snakey03rr, Bourbon, Missouri, United States
Comments:  Another Valenciennes border, this one much wider than the one above. Square mesh, and still with the same later 19th c conventional bed linen/bed clothes design. The width makes it more interesting. Seller cites some very minor flaws, and 2 ‘invisible’ joins. Basically very good condition.

181167373328   Sold for $63.00, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/m2gnk4p Antique White Chantilly Lace Wrap Shawl Collar Detachable 41.5″ Neck 5″ wide
Size: 41.5″ neckline, 5″ deep
Starting Price: $30.00
Auction ends: Jul 6, 2013 22:03:29 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller the_fuchsia_fleece, Raphine, Virginia, United States
Comments:  A bertha collar of Brussels Duchesse. Raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze inserts. It is a typical design for this kind of lace. Condition looks good from the photos, although there are few closeups to make a really good determination. The ends look a little wrinkled, not sure of the wear here. Overall good condition.

370845250337   Sold for $38.00, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/mrgcoxb Piece of Pretty Antique Point de Gaze Needlelace 61″ x 2-7/8″
Size: 2-7/8″ x 61″
Starting Price: 9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Jul 7, 2013 10:24:18 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller isohex, Tyne-Wear,, United Kingdom
Comments:  A narrow Point de Gaze border, no raised work, but that’s OK. The design is good, and the ‘mode’ decorative fillings are extensive for something this size, and nicely done. I also like the look of the roses at the lower edge.  One of the better designed narrow lengths of Point de Gaze I’ve seen recently. A few pinholes and small holes in the mesh and a few brown marks and other discoloration. Overall good condition.

360687387302   Sold for 42.00 GBP, 10 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/l9klahe Antique/vintage silk Maltese lace bertha
Size: neckline 40.5″, 7.75″ deep
Starting Price: 24.95 GBP
Auction ends: Jul 7, 2013 10:59:34 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments:  A bertha of cream silk Maltese. Typical outer border of alternating flowers and Maltese crosses, with vertical wheat ears along the neckline. This seems to be a very typical pattern in Maltese, you also see it a lot in handkerchiefs. The inner part is where these laces differentiate themselves and can really shine. Here there’s a rather spidery square pattern in the ground with woven leaves at the corners, and an occasional Maltese Cross. Looks basically in very good condition.

330948886372   Sold for 78.00 GBP, 7 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/kso95m4 Antique/vintage Carrickmacross lace edge 2 yards 3 ins
Size: 2.75″ x 2 yards 3″
Starting Price: 4.95 GBP
Auction ends: Jul 7, 2013 12:12:43 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments:  A border of Carrickmacross applique on machine net. Typical looped edge, and note also the little lozenges along the upper border. That’s another Carrickmacross feature sometimes seen, but not often because borders like this are a bit unusual. There’s a little fraying in the cloth in spots, and a few pulls in the ground. Basically good condition.

231009080106   Sold for 13.05 GBP, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/l5nhdxy Antique Early Handmade Lace Drawn Thread Linen Punto Tirato Italian 17th Century
Size: 4.5″ x 20″
Starting Price: 4.95 GBP
Auction ends: Jul 7, 2013 19:32:19 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller twist-in-time, Pottstown, Pennsylvania, United States
Comments:  A small piece of Punto Tirato Tela Sfilata. The threads are drawn out to create a square mesh, leaving the pattern intact. The sides of the mesh are then overcast for stability. It does have a late 16th early 17th c look to the design, and the finish of the threads has the dense, shiny appearance of what we presume to be early pieces.
But this is one of the great questions facing lace collections today; it looks old, but how do we really tell? I talked about this in my Brookhaven National Lab presentation two weeks ago. The answer is, we don’t really know unless we can do carbon dating (good up to about 1700) or perhaps there’s something to be learned from genetic analysis. I also visited the BNL light source, and we are thinking about what we could possibly do with a resource like that. Personally I think we have to stop relying on instinct and and  and start doing some hard analysis.
Piece is in good condition, despite being quite cut down. Just wish there were more.

http://tinyurl.com/lqmsbs8 ANTIQUE HANDMADE BELGIAN BRUSSELS DUCHESSE BOBBIN LACE LARGE COLLAR
Size: center back 3.5″ deep, 11.5″ across shoulders, 20.5″ to tips.
Starting Price: $29.95
Auction ends: Jul 7, 2013 19:38:39 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller getreadygo2, Glenview NAS, Illinois, United States
Comments:  A Duchesse collar with long points, no needlelace inserts. Some raised work in the bobbinlace, fairly typical designs with irregular picoted bride ground. A few broken brides, and seller notes a storage odor – overall good condition.

200938405605   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/k4otb6z Victorian Hanmade Irish ?Crochet Lace 3D Bertha Collar Many Different Designs
Size: 88 cm diagonally, 42 cm max width
Starting Price: $99.99 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: Jul 8, 2013 02:56:38 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mctiques, Winterport, Maine, United States
Comments:  A long collar of the French interpretation of Irish Crochet. Known for elaborate and varied grounds, lots of raised work in the motifs. Note particularly the little chrysanthemum-like flowers with petals hanging loose.  Beautiful technique – the design can be a little erratic. I’m hoping also that the color of this piece is not quite as yellow as shown in the photos.  A little area of neckline has some holes at the back, rather worn. Basically good condition.

http://tinyurl.com/nyt2gmj Chal, Shawl, Fichu, Manteleta · encaje bolillos · bobbin lace
Size: 88 cm diagonally, 42 cm max width
Starting Price: 35.00 EUR
Auction ends: Jul 8, 2013 04:58:22 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller ferni1389, Castellón de la Plana, Comunidad Valenciana, Spain
Comments:  A very deep collar or small cape of what looks like Le Puy guipure. It does have very typical Le Puy grounds, but some of the guipure work is atypical. No gimp, and no areas of point ground with motifs inside.  This is one of those areas in need of research. It is a three layer piece – outer border, the middle insertion run all the way around the piece, and the center guipure may have been cut down from a later piece. Some large holes near the right hand tip, and condition is on the lower end of good.

Size: ~3″ x 8.5″ each
Starting Price: 9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Jul 8, 2013 10:18:55 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller isohex, Tyne-Wear,, United Kingdom
Comments: Two Cuffs of Duchesse, no Point de Gaze inserts, but there are some decorative ‘mode fillings in flower centers.  A typical Duchesse design, with a good naturalistic asymmetric flower spray. Basically very good condition, I don’t see any problems in the photos.

360688098003   Sold for 27.00 GBP, 5 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/k3zzjke Blonde de Caen Dentelle Soie Aux Fuseaux 1,17m x 4cm Costume Arlésienne 19thc
Size: 1.6″ x 46″
Starting Price: 45.00 EUR
Auction ends: Jul 8, 2013 11:01:08 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller sirjle, Paris, France
Comments: A narrow border of Blonde de Caen with a fine leaf design. This is such a delicate lace and doesn’t often survive from around the mid 19th century. Seller cites two tiny holes – basically very good condition.

330938411698   Sold for 102.00 EUR, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/n7nzu47 Fine Dentelle Noire au Fuseau 4,95m x 31cm Costume Arlésienne Bobbin Lace 19thc
Size: 12.2″ x 194.9″
Starting Price: 25.00 EUR
Auction ends: Jul 8, 2013 11:07:51 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller sirjle, Paris, France
Comments: A Le-Puy looking wide border with an interesting plaited ground. Note the areas of point ground with embedded motifs, and the long chains of narrow leaves. Possibly made in two bands, I’m not certain of this, but seller cites some racroc joins.  One seam 25″ from one end. Overall good condition.

Lace Event Slovenia: 51st Lace Days in Železniki – July 18-21, 2013

51st Lace Days in Železniki, Slovenia
Sponsors:  Tourist Office, Železniki
Date: Thursday July 18 to Sunday July 21, 2013
Website: http://www.td-zelezniki.si/
Email:  td.zelezniki@siol.net
Phone: +386(0)31 876 535

Events take place in several locations around the town, including the Železniki museum, the Cultural Center, the Church of St. Anthony, and others.

The program of this event is given on the website, but the translation from Slovenian is rather difficult for me. Perhaps a knowledgeable reader can provide some clarification.
I can make out events such as:

  • Lacemaking demonstrations
  • OIDFA exhibition of “Plants of Slovenia in Lace”
  • Exhibitions of the work of students from the Železniki Lace School
  • Lace exhibition from Lepoglava in Croatia
  • Bobbin lace ecclesiastical heritage
  • Fashion show by designers Globočnik Nečemer and Anice Rakovec
  • Many other events unrelated to lacemaking will take place, including various sports competitions, and exhibitions of ironwork, for which this region is famous.  (one of the lines in the program translates something like ‘Slovenian competition for children and adults in bobbinlace before the blast furnaces.)
There is an award called ‘gold lace’ which seems to be given for several activities

This event is held yearly in Peniche, but there seems to be little final information available. There is a poster, and one preliminary agenda out so far, and some hints from a private facebook page. Not too helpful. I’ll update the post as more information becomes available.

Peniche is building a new lace museum. An older building is being refurbished, work began in January 2013.

This is the 43rd annual Lace Week in Rauma, Finland. Most of the events will be held in Finnish, although some are in English and French.  This is sponsored by the city of Rauma and various other local organizations.  Events include local tours, particularly of the Rauma Art Museum. I haven’t been able to find any lace classes or specifically lace-related events, but one can safely assume there will be demonstrations.
This year there will be a number of performances by various bands, especially on Friday, the traditional “Night of Black Lace”.
