In Memorium: Marcella Pattyn, d. April 14, 2013, Kortrijk, Belgium

marcella-pattyn-265

Marcella Pattyn died at the age of 92 on April 14 in Kortrijk, Belgium. Lacemakers are not likely to have heard of her, yet with the passing of this extraordinary woman we reach the end of an ancient tradition. She was the last Beguine.
The Beguines were a group of lay sisters associated with the Catholic church, most active from the 13th through 16th centuries. At that point many groups were suppressed in the Protestant Reformation, and others did not long survive the subsequent turmoil of revolutions. Yet beguinages endured until the 20th century in places like Bruges, Lier, Mechlin, Leuven, and Ghent, which had nearly 1,000 members in 1900.  Juffrouw Pattyn lived at the St. Elisabeth Beguinage in Kortrijk, where her statue stands in memory of this great tradition.  Virtually blind, her life as a beguine began at age 21, and was spent in contemplation, good works, and music. In keeping with the tradition of the Beguines, she was also a weaver.
What we as lacemakers must not forget is the contribution the Beguines made to lace. Postcards of the early 20th century are full of images of lacemakers in the beguinage setting (see below). These women lived in independent communities, making their own living, often in the textile industries. Lacemaking was a vital activity, carried on at a high level of quality. It is time for someone in the lacemaking community to delve into this subject, recover what history is left, and document it before it is forgotten.

The women making lace in the last row of postcards are not Beguines, but elderly women living in the the largely vacant, very beautiful Beguinage housing.

http://tinyurl.com/cbow9ep 19th c. Antique Point de Gaze Brussels FINE Lace Collar
Size: 15″ neckline
Starting Price: $195.00 Buy-it-Now or Make Offer
Auction ends: May 06, 2013 09:45:16 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller vintageblessings, Meridian, Idaho, United States
Comments:  A Brussels Duchesse dress front. Good raised work in the bobbinlace, actually the motifs are quite nice. A funny looking flower in the larger Point de Gaze insert. The neckpiece seems to have been attached separately. Some pinholes in the smaller PdG insert, I think I see one broken bride in the bobbinlace. Overall good condition.

121101329823   Unsold.

http://tinyurl.com/bmvt36p Antique French ALENCON Needle Lace Lappet 18/19thc.
Size: 3″ x 33″
Starting Price: $45.00
Auction ends: May 06, 2013 11:05:28 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester, United Kingdom
Comments:  A pair of Alençon lappets, one of which seems to have been cut short and joined together. Normally lappets of this lace (dating from around 1780) are around 23″ in length each. So look where the tape measure says 24″, and you notice a definite change in the width of the piece. I think one lappet has been cut short and joined onto something that is almost original – lacking the definitive upper termination, and the join is very well done.  In fact the design of the shorter lappet, although close, doesn’t really match the longer one – they could be from two different sets.
Brides tortillée, which was a technique widely used in Alençon, and I think it is a mistake to attribute something like this to Argentan. That industry was actually very small and we don’t know much about it at this period in time. The two cities are quite close together, and techniques were extensively shared.
This piece as modified looks in very good condition,

http://tinyurl.com/br7como 18thc Antique Valenciennes – BINCHE Bobbin Lace – 69 x 2inches (175x5cm)
Size: 2″ x 69″
Starting Price: $45.00
Auction ends: May 06, 2013 11:10:50 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester, United Kingdom
Comments:  The condition of this Valenciennes border is on the lower side of good (3 joins, fraying and holes, breaks on the footside). But it is a nice example of ~1730-40 design Valenciennes. Much like the Argentan industry discussed above, Binche was small compared to Valenciennes at this time, and we really don’t know much about what it produced. This example has two types of ‘snowflake’ meshes, the ones with the holes being the oeil de perdrix (partridge eye) variation.  The general design reminds me a lot of contemporary Mechlin.

Size: 20″ neckline, 70″ outside edge, 11″ deep
Starting Price: 22.00 GBP
Auction ends: May 06, 2013 12:06:2013 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller smugersmith, Worcester, United Kingdom
Comments:  A deep shawl collar of Maltese with a fairly typical design. Wheat ears along theneckline bordered with flower roundels. Then guipure Maltese crosses, although these look more like 4-leaf clovers, surrounded by woven leaf flower mesh.  Alternating crosses and flowers along the outside edge. All these layers would have been made separately on the narrow Maltese pillow and joined later.  Not many photos, but what I see looks in good condition.

Starting Price: $9.00
Auction ends: May 06, 2013 12:25:12 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller luckylynne, Tulsa, Oklahoma, United States
Comments:  An impressive Chantilly mantilla; high end market, dense design, well executed. It does have condition problems, with some serious tears along the edges. Also has some holes in the ground, especially on the left side.  There is some ombre shading in the design; the piece is probably French.  But I’ll have to rate condition as short of good, and it’s very difficult to repair something like this.

Offered by: Ebay seller beyondthetower, SOMERSET, United Kingdom
Comments:  I’ll call this Italian Pescocostanzo, in the Province of L’Aquila in the Abruzzo region of Italy. It is a heavy guipure lace, not too well known, but with a bold, stylized design resulting from centuries of development. Ricci in Old Italian Lace has a good discussion. There is one cut place, unknown exactly where (hate it when that happens, heaven forbid it ever happened to me… other than that one time…) and a few stains, but basically good condition.

Starting Price: 45.00 GBP
Auction ends: May 06, 2013 14:16:39 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller amberfarleigh, Richmond, N. Yorkshire, United Kingdom
Comments:  A Carrickmacross applique collar which lays around the shoulders in a series of panels. A bertha variation. Wish there were a photo of the whole thing laid flat.  Typical looped picot edge, and there are a few ring needlelace accents. Note the cutwork along the edges, and large areas of needleweaving in the net. The design looks a bit more like Burano pomegranates than Irish motifs, unusual. Overall very good condition, just a bit wrinkled.

Offered by: Ebay seller yashodara84, Capital Federal, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Comments:  A Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net, a high end market piece. Well made motifs with a few simple needlelace fillings. Note the extensive esprits in the net. Pierced MOP/Abalone sticks are another indication of quality. The lace looks in very  good condition, and I do see at least 1 broken stick.

Comments:  A small Honiton collar, snails/slugs period. I especially like the thick brides with looped edges. A nicely worked piece, in very good condition. Excellent photography job!

Offered by: Ebay seller theantiqueswarehouse, United States
Comments:  A bertha of Duchesse de Bruxelles. The point de Gaze inserts alternate between raised petal roses and some ‘mode’ needlelace fillings.  Standard Duchesse motifs, and the design is quite dense.  Condition looks very good from the photos, although not all the needlelace is photographed.  The piece is rather wrinkled.

Offered by: Ebay seller amberfarleigh, Richmond, N. Yorkshire, United Kingdom
Comments:  A border of flat Point de Gaze, no raised petals.  Decoration consists mainly of some heavy rings used as ‘mode’ fillings. The design is fairly simple, and note the rings used as esprits in the ground, mirrored in the looped edges of the swags just below the main flower in each repeat. Unusual.  A few pinholes and some brown stains, overall color a little brown. Essentially good condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller greatlace, Palm Beach, Florida, United States
Comments:  A small section of an Alençon border, with a later 19th century romantic design. Nicely worked with good ‘mode’ fillings. Réseau fin net.  The condition is very good, exceptional.  Just wish there were more.

Offered by: Ebay seller greatlace, Palm Beach, Florida, United States
Comments:  As the seller notes, it does seem too large for a cuff, but I’m not sure what else it could be.  Well made bobbinlace motifs with a center Point de Gaze ground. The rest of the ground looks kind of like an Alençon réseau, with a whipped return.  That’s quite rare in a Belgian lace.  It also has some simple needlelace fillings.  Point d’Angleterre is probably as good as any description.  The condition looks very good.

Comments: An Irish Crochet collar/cuff set in two separate listings.  This is a very recognizable type of IC, with small 7-petal flower-heads with raised ring centers, arranged in trefoils. This same pattern is endlessly repeated.  These pieces look in very good condition, although a littled tanned.

Comments:  A deep collar attached to long frontpieces of Maltese.  An interesting piece. Note the masses of leaves at the back of the collar along with the guipure flower. The long front lappets are basically rows of woven leaf flowers. Three breaks along neckline at the back. Some wear and discoloration in other spots. Basically good condition.

Comments:  A deep shawl collar of Maltese. There’s a lot going on here, about 6 concentric layers plus the opening plaited edge. The technique is good, especially the large Maltese crosses. But I’m not sure how effective the overall design is – a bit heavy overall.  A few loose threads and minor age marks – basically good condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller twist-in-time, Pottstown, Pennsylvania, United States
Comments:  An example of what you actually do with a nice border of lace. Make a hat veil out of it by edging a good piece of machine tulle. The lace is Alençon, brides bouclée (lots of buttonhole) above, réseau fin used as a filling along the edge.  There are some that would assign this to Argentan based on the buttonhole brides, and the lack of any sign of horsehair, but I say the jury’s out. This type of lace was done in both locations. A simple design, no ‘mode’ fillings.  Overall it looks in very good condition.  I think it’s a late 18th century done up as a veil later in the 19th c.

Comments:  An Irish Crochet collar with small motifs.  Intresting working method with the narrow parallel lines joined together to form a textured textile. Some raised work in the centers of the motifs. Brides are crocheted over, and the picots look almost like trefoils, but not too successfully.  The design is a bit scattered, but overall it’s an interesting piece. A little fraying in some picots, overall good condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller baraud, Newton Abbot, United Kingdom
Comments:  A Maltese fan with Mother of Pearl/Abalone sticks. Fans in Maltese aren’t that common, I think the lace is a bit too heavy for the folding needed. When you do see them they usually have the 5-pointed star ground and a lot of guipure work, typical of Gozo. This one is no exception. Note how the design of the Maltese crosses each fall inbetween the sticks. It is a well designed effective piece. Looks in very good condition, very minor issues.

Comments:  A dress front of embroidered machine tulle.  Seller says silk, not sure how to verify that from the photos. Also don’t know where it was made, it almost looks like that Spanish stuff you see in colored silk on black net sometimes. Nicely done, in very good condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller hocsocmom007, Santa Clarita, California, United States
Comments:  A Brussels Duchesse fan with elaborate Mother of Pearl/Abalone sticks.  Well, actually the center part consists of both needle and bobbin applique on machine net, so that takes it a bit away from the Duchesse standard.  The applique is nicely done in a naturalistic design of needlelace irises, all else in bobbinlace. I don’t see any damage to the tulle, which is unusual. This part is nicely set off by the surrounding bobbinlace.  The piece has a nice presence, and the highly decorated sticks endorse a  higher end quality.  The Seller says 6 of the sticks are damaged, see listing for a complete rundown.  The lace is in very good condition.

Comments:  I couldn’t resist this one. It’s part of a collection of handkerchiefs that went through the Antiques Roadshow. Ever wonder why you never see lace on AR?  It’s a political thing, show a little lace and suddenly they will be overwhelmed with people bringing in lace. That would be inconvenient. Don’t ask me how I know this.
Anyway, back to the piece, which looks like a French whitework embroidery with a few needlelace fillings, but with an unusual elaborate and heavily embroidered cutwork edge. It does come up occasionally, but very rarely.  One hole in the cutwork, a few pinholes in the cloth. Basically good condition overall.

Comments:  A Point de Gaze fan with Mother of Pearl/Abalone sticks. No raised work in the last which not only good for folding, but represents a higher quality product. The “Lace on the Train” event at the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway has been moved forward from the weekend of National Lacemaking Day in September (which it has been for the last two years) to August 10th and 11th so that it coincides with the start of the Guild’s Summer School (which is just up the road!). This year we are making it a Lace and Craft event, with Lacemakers on the train and Craft demonstrations in the shed. The craft tables are by invitation, but anyone can come and make lace on the train! We found that the problem with holding the event in September was that once the kids had gone back to school, all the local lacemakers went on holiday!

Tickets: £7.5 adult, £6 senior, £3.75 child over 5, child under 5 free, £18.50 family (2+2).
Tickets are valid all day. Purchase tickets at the station on the day of the event.
There is a tea room serving hot and cold meals and snacks.
Contact: Jane Partridge. Please email Jane in advance so an estimate of the number of attendees can be obtained.
