Comments: A later 18th century Alençon border of a design sometimes called Herren Alençon.  Presumably because it could form ruffles for cuffs and cravats for gentlemen. It has a typical stiff lower border with réseau fin mesh and good fillings, complemented by a brides tortillée upper ground with sprigs. I don’t see any obvious horsehair, but it was probably used in the manufacture and then withdrawn. A nice example of this form. Seller notes some orange stains (localized) and two small areas of damage, both I think on the lower edge. Overall good condition for a lace this old.

Comments: Now here’s something quite interesting and very unexpected out of a Caribbean island. These are lace pillows based on the Queyras model, most often used for making freehand bobbinlace. Comments: An interesting embroidered net which might be Limerick. It comes with a note indicating it was worn by a previous owner’s mother in 1830 and made by their aunt. The form of this collar is not inconsistent with designs of that period with the wide gigot sleeves and sloping neckline. The design itself seems to mirror the French blondes. There is a separate edging which is probably machine made.  The condition appears very good with only slight damage to the edging. Looks like there is one seam near the right hand corner.

Comments: I think this border is Belgian Point de Flandre, which was kind of an upscale Bloemwerk and downscale Duchesse. Actually that’s not fair, this is a perfectly good pieced Belgian lace with characteristics of both, and it can have some impressive designs. It is really based on the early 17th century Flemish and Milanese designs. Tends to be called ‘Old Flanders’ today.  This piece is nicely done with fillings and some ‘islands’ in the bride ground, which is also characteristic of Bruges Bloemwerk. Looks in very good condition from the photos.

Comments: Usually remade 17th c Gros Point is pretty jumbled, but this piece looks very good. Someone put a lot of thought into arranging the motifs, and they aren’t too crowded so stand very well on their own. There are some nice sculpted edges, and the plain clothwork really gives it a carved appearance. The border is a later addition, but well done. The lace itself is a bit worn, as would be expected, so I’ll rate it as good overall condition.  It’s an impressive looking piece.

Comments: Two plates from a set showing local crafts presumably from the Aurillac region. I’ve never seen the lacemaker plate before. The seller says these are faience, although I’m not an expert so can’t tell myself. There is a tiny crack at the bottom of the lacemaker plate and some small chips on the reverse. But I don’t think that’s very important for a lace collection, although it probably would be for a ceramics collection.

Comments: The card with this piece reads “Made in West Country, Dorset, Somerset & Devon Called ‘bone lace’. This seems to have been identified by consulting Marian Powys book. It does have the look of early Devon, although the design isn’t very sophisticated. Which probably makes it a rare survivor, since the better designed and worked pieces tend to last longer. So I don’t think this piece should be ignored. Condition is a bit short of good with holes in the mesh and some staining.  The ‘bone lace’ more likely refers to the use of bone bobbins.

Inside are M. Crosses on a dense woven leaf ground. You find slight variations of this combination quite often, and this one is very nicely done. Comments: This is a Brussels Duchesse fan leaf of high quality, and a delight to see after so many that were made without a lot of regard to good design. Raised rose petals in the Point de Gaze insert, and note the scattered esprits in the ground and the rather elaborate fillings. Good raised work in the bobbinlace everywhere. What looks like an extra piece at the end is just the part that attaches to the guard stick, and is very typical in a fan leaf. An occasional broken bride and pinhole or two in the needlelace mesh, but overall very good condition. The seller is listing two other pieces from this set, see below.

These were usually stuffed with wool, and the lacemaker would also cover the original canvas with another colored cloth. This one appears to be in exceptionally good, usable condition. Comments: Two pieces of the same lace from the Blair House sale. The top portion is reticella, the bottom is a Genoese-type bobbinlace.  I don’t think the bobbinlace is early, especially given the funny edge next to the reticella cloth. And the general work is a bit too tape-like, a little simplistic. Although the gathering of bobbins in that triangular form at the base of the scallops is a Genoese feature. As for the reticella, there’s an interesting sheen to the border where it meets the bobbinlace which might indicate some age. The technique is correct, but it doesn’t quite have the sophisticated feel of a really early piece. Overall condition looks very good, maybe just a little staining.

Comments: A wide Maltese silk border.  Large pieces of Maltese like shawls are fairly common, but the better wide borders are a bit unusual, and tend in general to be quit high quality. This one has good, solid guipure work, and extensive woven leave grounds – a variation with some little crosses between the leaves. My only gripe is that the Maltese crosses along the bottom are a little askew with some strange ground treatment below the bottom arm of each cross. They almost look like they don’t go with the piece, although the technique is quite similar. I like the little looped bottom edge very much.  Seller cites somepale marks, but overall looks in very good condition from the photos.

Comments: A long border of flat needlelace in the style of Point de France. The roughly hexagonal mesh is more characteristic of French laces than Italian in the later 17th c.  It also has some vertical symmetry, more in keeping with the ‘candelabra’ style of the French. Is it an early piece? It is very long and in excellent shape, which in itself would be unusual for an early piece.  The lower border is a little simple, and the picots look a little heavier than those on the brides. The upper border looks like a bobbin-made engrelure, although photos aren’t close enough to tell. At least on the bottom I think this has been cut from a larger piece and the looped border added later.  Likely the same on the top, but I’d need a closer look to tell for certain. As for the main part, it looks good, but I’d say the jury’s out for the moment.

The lower border is cut. Note the double headed eagle. Dating pieces like this is very difficult, it continued to be made into the 19th century, especially in Sardinia. But this one does have a nice look, and the thread is an uneven linen, could be handspun. Condition is good, some breaks in the lower border and I think a few pulls in the main work. Overall very good, especially if it is an older piece.

Comments: Knitted Pita lace doilies from the Azores. This lace is little documented, and tends to turn up in odd places, like dusty corners of antique shops. It is advertised as worked in Pita fiber, which is actually the Century plant, or American Aloe (although it is not a true aloe) The plant is native to Mexico and was imported to the Azores by the Spanish. However, it is also possible that these doilies are made from very fine heavily starched cotton, and frankly, I haven’t discounted that possibility. The Azores became a center for very fine knitted lace from pita fiber around 1840. Apparently they also made bobbinlace out of pita, but I don’t know any examples.  I have seen knitted lace with a slightly different fiber, very supple but with a flatter thread, and it shines like gold in certain lights. So I’ve got a lot of confusion on the issue. This is something I’m going to try and research soon.  These doilies are lovely, one has 3 holes, the others are very good condition.

Comments: A chantilly fan with black wood sticks. The case is labled by the Parisian fan maker Buissot. The design is a conventional flower and swag romantic pattern. It is a fairly large piece and seems in very good condition. I can’t see any problems from the photos.

Comments: A good length of Youghal lace. Nicely done with that peculiar bride ground, and some grids of rings used as fillings.  Not quite as exuberent as you sometimes find, but a nice example. Seller cites a few loose brides and some light stains close to one end, nothing serious. Overall very good condition.
