Size: not given
Starting Price: 12.00 GBP
Auction ends: Nov 30, 2012 01:55:22 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller reddolly123, Nottingham, United Kingdom
Comments: A lappet scarf of a French Cluny or Miracourt bobbin lace.  Note the gimp around the guipure work, while other areas have no gimp. Good leaves raised above the half-stitch ground. The ‘star’ ground is used in the scarf band. Seller cites a ‘gold’ color and a few darker marks, but I don’t see any damage. Basically good condition.

Sold for 16.00 GBP, 2 bidders.

Starting Price: 15.00 GBP
Auction ends: Nov 30, 2012 02:29:09 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller reddolly123, Nottingham, United Kingdom
Comments: A long scarf of white silk Maltese lace. The design is a bit conventional, but quite effective. I like the roundels along the edge with the center stars and round petals. There seems to be an interesting ground down the center of the piece, but photos aren’t close enough to say how it is made. Overall condition looks very good from the two photos, seller notes some minor marks and splits.

Sold for 52.90 GBP, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/d8ytkbb Antique Victorian Cream Buckinghamshire Bucks Point Bobbin Lace Bonnet Veil 1850
Size: 18″ x 52.5″
Starting Price: 0.99 GBP
Auction ends: Nov 30, 2012 06:23:24 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller madaboutfans, Cork, Ireland
Comments: A very interesting piece. It is a bonnet veil, rather long, and it could be Bucks. And the seller is from Ireland, close to the source of such material. I’m looking for signs of racroc stitch joining, but don’t see anything obvious – I think the horizontal lines are just fold marks.
Large point ground pieces like veils aren’t too common, and I’m leaning  toward Swiss Neuchâtel origin where they did do this kind of work. Neuchâtel doesn’t get nearly enough press as a point ground bobbinlace. I have two large Swiss shawls in my collection, and this piece appears very similar in style and technique (see an example Ebay 150695851199). The plain clothwork with looped borders is quite typical of Swiss work. The fillings are only honeycomb, which again is very typical of Neuchâtel.
There are two obvious small holes, and a few other minor ones. A few stain spots, but overall this looks in good condition.

Sold for 42.55 GBP, 8 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/c45yem3 STUNNING ANTIQUE COGGESHALL TAMBOUR LACE WEDDING VEIL SHAWL SCARF
Size: 22″ x 102″
Starting Price: 160.00 GBP
Auction ends: Nov 30, 2012 12:33:13 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller pbur3053, Selkirk, United Kingdom
Comments: A rectangular shawl of tambour embroidery on machine net. I hesitate to attribute specifically any tambour work because it was done in so many places.  This is a particularly nice example, with a well defined spray of flowers at each end, and a dense border around all 4 edges.  I don’t see any condition problems from the photos – very good overall.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/d2a772k Lovely Antique Bedfordshire Maltese Lace Fall Cap.
Size: 35″ x 12.25″
Starting Price: 19.99 GBP
Auction ends: Dec 2, 2012 10:03:59 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller isohex, Sunderland, United Kingdom
Comments: With the central Maltese Cross, I’m inclined to attribute this fallcap to Malta. Beds workers certainly were inspired by Maltese lace, and borrowed many technical elements, but the overt inclusion of the Maltese Cross in Beds design was generally not done. There is room for discussion here. This piece does seem more delicate than one usually finds in Maltese lace, and the fan shaped motifs just inside the cap edge are unusual. But with the rather plain outside edge, and the typically Maltese ‘layered’ construction caused by the narrowness of the pillow, I’ll go with Malta on this.

Sold for 36.99 GBP, 3 bidders.

Size: 13.5″ square
Starting Price: 14.95 GBP
Auction ends: Dec 2, 2012 10:18:42 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A Point de Gaze handkerchief, basically flat work which often indicates a higher end market piece. Well done fillings, and I like the raised border of rings surrounding flower centers. Seller indicates some well done small repairs, and I found one little hole in the ground center top – nothing that really compromises this piece. Overall good condition.

Sold for 205 GBP, 11 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/d456jmo Antique/vintage Honiton lace edged handkerchief with butterfly and bee
Size: ~13″ square
Starting Price: 14.95 GBP
Auction ends: Dec 2, 2012 10:32:29 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A Honiton handkerchief with figural elements, a butterfly and a bee in flight. and small bird motifs. The brides on this piece are covered with buttonhole stitches, which might kick this into the ‘Honiton Point’ category.  Basic design is snails/slugs, but the figures are great. Note also the switch in the edge design at the corners. Overall it is charming, and in very good condition. I don’t see any problems in the photos. Maybe the special motifs are a bit off color compared to the rest, but that is trivial.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: Wish there were more of this. A flat Point de Gaze border with deep points. The design is a bit more naturalistic than you usually find, and I like the ornamentation in the points. Seller cites some small holes in the ground, can’t see any in the two photos. Overall good condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller isohex, Sunderland, United Kingdom
Comments: A deep Maltese collar with large areas of guipure in the mid section. ‘Wheat ear’ border around the top, and Maltese crosses alternating with leaf grid roundels at the bottom. Seller notes some small marks, nothing serious. Overall very good condition.

Sold for 41.00 GBP, 3 bidders.

Auction ends: Dec 2, 2012 11:32:24 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller barrioux, SERMENTIZON, Auvergne, France
Comments: I’m a big fan of this seller, who actively searches out antique lacemaking equipment in the Haute Loire area. There’s basically no other source for this material. Here is a lacemakers footstool with known provenance, ordered from an ébéniste in Le Puy in 1930. It looks in excellent condition; seller notes minimal usage marks.

Sold for 37.39 EUR, 3 bidders.

Starting Price: $10.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Dec 2, 2012 18:00:01 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller eastayton, London, England, United Kingdom
Comments: A short segment of early 18th century bobbinlace, Valenciennes or perhaps Binche. Basically the same type of lace was made in both places at this time, and the Binche industry was much smaller. We don’t really know much about the original Binche products, although today this style of lace has evolved into the Point de Fee variety of what is now known as Binche.  This sample has elaborate snowflake ground and flat motifs. A little rough along the edges from general wear, but overall good condition.

Auction ends: Dec 2, 2012 18:10:01 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller eastayton, London, England, United Kingdom
Comments: A Brussels Duchesse handkerchief in very good condition; I can’t spot any problems from the photos. The Point de Gaze element is confined to a single rose in each corner of the piece. The bobbinlace is crisp and well executed, note the leaves on halfstitch ground. The needlelace rose appears to have raised petals. There is little in the way of decorative needlelace filings, but the piece really doesn’t need it.  It’s like a crowded flower garden, and stands perfectly well on its own.

$111.50, 6 bidders, reserve not met.

Offered by: Ebay seller eastayton, London, England, United Kingdom
Comments: A Brussels bobbinlace lappet with inserted droschel reseau. It is in very good condition, but has unfortunately been cut short on a diagonal at the top. The bobbin work is high quality, I especially like the little openwork flowers inserted into a field of cloth stitch. The design is very well filled, indicating a slightly earlier work, 1730’s.  One thing to look for in a lace like this is the variety of bobbin-made fillings, especially along the edges of the piece. Nicely done here.

$400.00, 4 bidders, reserve not met.

Offered by: Ebay seller eastayton, London, England, United Kingdom
Comments: An earlier Brussels bobbinlace lappet set, which has been modified by cutting the lappets short and attaching a center section of another lace. Stylistically the pieces are the same, and if you stare hard enough, you might think they all come from the same lappet set.  This is early Brussels bobbinlace with snowflake ground fillings, but note the small areas of droschel. I think this is original, I’ve seen it before, one of the earliest examples of the use of this stitch. To me this is one of the finest bobbinlaces ever made.

Comments: A Honiton flounce in very good condition. You can see the snail/slugs inflence in this piece, but it’s definitely beyond that. The work is so nicely done that it almost has a machine-made quality to it. Too bad there aren’t any figures in it, that would have made it even more exceptional.

Offered by: Ebay seller eastayton, London, England, United Kingdom
Comments: This is a mystery. It’s a mixture of needlelace and bobbinlace, and note the thistle design. I’ve been looking at Honiton handkerchiefs, thinking there might be a clue in the way the lace is attached to the center cloth. Found a few similarities, but the bobbin motifs don’t much look like Honiton.  And Devon really has no needlelace tradition, there’s more in the Youghal vein. Of course they don’t have a bobbinlace tradition, at least not like this. Although there is some mention of an Irish Honiton-like bobbinlace; I’ve never seen a piece.  But consider Belgium, they could certainly handle both the bobbin and needlelace, and the mesh looks a bit Bruges-like.
Actually, I stumped. But it’s a great piece in very good condition.

Comments: This bobbin lace set is fairly complete, and was produced by the writers of the ‘Boule de Neige’ instructional pattern books (~1905 to ~1920, Imprimerie Monnoyer, Le Mans). You see these occasionally, and this is one of the nicer ones I’ve seen as far as condition goes – just a water stain on the cover and one end of the shelf where the scissors sit is missing.  I don’t know if all the equipment is original, for example the skein of thread looks a bit fine for a beginner. A very nice find.

Comments: An English horseshoe stand with a large straw-filled square pillow. I love the patchwork on the pillow, obviously repaired by a loving lacemaker – it really makes the piece. The stand looks in very good original condition – note the split peg fastenings.

Comments: A border of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net, with some needlelace fillings in a knotted grid pattern. Comments: Two lengths of the same Honiton border, the longer one with one seam. It’s a kind of alternating pattern of roses, thistles, and feathery leaves, with grid tally fillings. A little on the snails/slugs side, the condition looks good. A few broken brides.

Comments: A wide flounce of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net. Some simple needlelace fillings, and I think there’s some needlelace Point de Gaze-type mesh used as shading in the roses. Hard to tell, closeups not close enough. The flowers are quite naturalistic. No esprits in the upper ground. Wish there were more of this, and also wish it was photographed flat so you can see the entire design at once. A few small holes, overall good condition.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse bertha – I think the roses in the Point de Gaze inserts have raised petals. It looks a little unusual, especially the bands of bobbinlace surrounding the Point de Gaze. The design has a kind of verticality that is quite nice. The bobbinlace is a bit simply done, relying on small flowers and a simple leaf pattern. But it works nicely.  There are a few separations along the neck edge, but the Point de Gaze looks intact. Overall good condition.

Comments: A narrow rectangular veil, perhaps a bonnet veil, although it is a bit long. The lace is muslin applique on machine tulle. The applique appears to be done with an overcast stitch over a heavy cord, not tambour as in Belgian examples. The design is confined to three sides and is quite delicate. Seller cites a few pinholes in the net, overall condition is good.

Comments: Another narrow ‘bonnet veil’, this one a bit shorter than the previous example. This one is Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. Comments: An Irish Crochet round collar, fairly deep. I’m guessing that it is whiter than it looks against the green background, although seller says it has age patina especially around the neck edge. Comments: An embroidered net flounce, tambour I think. Seller says it is an alb flounce, and the religious symbolism is obvious.  The work is very well executed. There a number of small holes in the net, and at least one patch that I can see. Comments: Wonder where the other lappet is? An outstanding example of Brussels bobbinlace with brides, made 1720-1730. Note the snowflake fillings extensively used in the designs. Telling lace like this apart from contemporary English Devon work can be difficult, and the ‘square’ mass of leaves at the end of the piece is something you also find in English work. But there really aren’t enough known examples to really tell. Based on the fineness of the work, I’ll go with Flemish.  The condition appears very good, I don’t see any problems from the photos.

Comments: It’s been a while since we’ve seen a really good parasol cover. This is Brussels Duchesse, with extensive work in the Point de Gaze inserts. Raised work on the bobbinlace. Overall quite an effective design, almost too crowded for a parasol. The details could get lost in the folds. But you never know until you see something like this mounted. The condition appears very good, seller cites a small repair, but I can’t see it.

It is very wide, and I’d label it a Crinoline Flounce if the design were better. I tend to reserve that term for wide appliques of outstanding design, but perhaps I’m nitpicking. The motifs are a bit large and a little loosely worked, and the esprits aren’t too densely scattered – more in keeping with the design. But it’s a good upper middle market product. And it gets lots of points for very good condition.

Starting Price: 9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Nov 24, 2012 11:05:54 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller vintage*delights2008, swansea by the sea, United Kingdom
Comments: A silk Maltese collar with 4 concentric layers of bobbinlace, all nicely matched. This is a fairly typical pattern, wheat ears near the neck with alternating Maltese crosses and flowers at the outside edge.  Seller says there is a ribbon threaded through the neck edge, just barely visible in the photos. Condition looks very good from what I can see, no defects that I can detect. Maybe just a little wrinkled.

Comments: A Maltese lappet scarf, looks in excellent condition. The ends are large and bold, and I like the detail in the plated edge around the whole piece. More complex stuff runs up the center of the scarf, terminating in a Maltese cross at each end. Quite bold, and a little wider than you normally see for something like this.

Comments: An interesting handkerchief of muslin appliqued on machine net. The borders of the motifs looked overcast over a heavier thread, like Carrickmacross, but it doesn’t have quite the same design style as that Irish lace. There are some needlerun fillings in the centers of the flowers and leaves. Wish I could see details of the outside edge. A few small holes in the net, not very serious. Overall good condition.

Comments: This is the first seller on the Alerts that I’ve seen from Russia (I think SPb is St. Petersburg)! A beautiful later 19th c Alençon fragment from a very original piece, likely a scarf. Most of the ground is brides tortillée, with réseau fin used as a filler in the swags and border. Quite a romantic design, very well made and in excellent condition. Aside from having been cut very short.

Comments: A very high quality Valenciennes de Gand in excellent condition (just one join 1 yard from one end). Very long and relatively wide. Note the half stitch ‘ombre’ contrast in the petals of the flowers. I also like the tiny holes used to decorate the cloth stitch in the 5 lobed leaves at the bottom, haven’t seen that before.

Comments: Silk Irish Crochet is relatively rare, and due to the limitations of the thread, often looks a bit different from cotton or linen Irish Crochet.  Particularly in the edge treatment, which here is a series of picoted rings. There is also some good raised work on the flowers. Overall condition looks very good, I don’t see anything wrong from the photos except perhaps a little staining on the lower righthand flower. A bit hard to tell exactly without a detailed closeup.

Comments: Tambour embroidery on machine net. I assume it is rectangular, quite a large size. It is difficult to see the hole pattern, but there is a larger spray of flower and leaves in at least one corner, and smaller sprays around at least 3 sides, maybe 4. Nice small sprigs in the main body of the net.  A few small holes, not serious, overall good condition.

Comments: A Bruges bertha collar with typical bloemwerk motifs. These are fairly large, but tightly worked – there’s a nice presence to the piece. The condition looks very good from the photos – seller doesn’t include any condition notes.

Comments: Probably a large Limerick bonnet veil, or perhaps an apron as the seller indicates. The motifs are large flat areas of needlerun stitches, with a few decorative fillings, not too varied.  The rings are typical of Limerick. Seller cites some minor openings, overall very good condition.

Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, New York, United States
Comments: A collar of late 17th c Point de Neige or Punto Neve. This piece has the vermicular base typical of Italian work, along with elaborate decoration of the raised edges. It is not in original form, but has been cut down to a 19th century collar pattern. And the decoration isn’t quite consistent from one end of the piece to the other, so it’s probably been pieced together. Still, the work is beautiful and it is a lovely sample piece. A few loose brides – it’s always amazing how this kind of lace survives as well as it does.

Comments: An early 18th c Brussels bobbinlace with brides. I think the picot edge has been added later, not enough closeups to really tell. The design is a bit confused, and the piece is rather the worse for wear, but it’s a nice example of the type.

   No bids.

Comments: A very beautiful Point de Gaze flounce of the flat type, which is often the best. I love the decorative fillings and the little raised rings used as swags. Plus the shading in the roses, and the little stripes of alternating stitches just below the ring chain. Definitely a high end market piece – it doesn’t get much better than this. I don’t see any condition problems from the photos, very good condition altogether.

Offered by: Ebay seller susand6934, Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, United Kingdom
Comments: An English horseshoe stand with what looks to be an original square pillow (not domed) stuffed with some kind of straw. The form of the stand is a bit odd, and I’m thinking it’s been adapted from an earlier stand that originally did not have the horseshoe. Look how low the horseshoe is relative to the upper brace; normally these were made together. Which makes it quite rare, you never see the single stands. Everything looks in very good condition.

Comments: It’s unusual to see Mechlin in a shape like this, and the design recalls 18th century lappets. It’s an extraordinary piece, even though the clothwork and fillings are relatively simple. And the condition looks very good, I don’t see any problems from the photos.

Comments: This looks like Ghent work. Note the ‘Valenciennes de Gand’ type ground in the cartouches, and the exceptionally fine work on the bobbinlace motifs. There doesn’t seem to be any damage to the lace, but I see one brown spot at the bottom of the righthand side of the photo.  Seller indicates a few sots. Overall this is a high end piece in very good condition.

Comments: This is one of those odd pieces where Bucks has been cut up and appliqued on machine net. Several of these have come up on Ebay recently.  It takes a lot of nerve to do this, and most of the closeups have been taken from the back of the piece, so it’s hard to see exactly how the cut edges are secured. The n et is nice and supple, much like the kind used for Honiton applique. I’m thinking that the piece at the bottom edge might be intact, although there’s a separate picot edge added to finish it. Seller cites small holes in the net and some repairs, basically good condition.

Comments: A crinoline flounce of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net; very long, reasonably wide, quite collectible. There are numerous small holes and repairs in the net, so I’ll call it a bit short of good on condition in these areas, and you can probably areas that are much better since this is such a long length. The design is romantic, note the sprigs used as esprits in the upper ground. Note also the good work on needlelace fillings.

Comments: A Duchesse fan, no needlelace inserts, with imitation blonde tortoiseshell sticks. Note the silver and diamond monogram on the guard stick. I’ve seen two others of these come up in the past two years. The lace is well done, fairly conventional design, with raised work in the flowers and connecting bands.  The design is a bit crowded for my taste, but it earns a lot for very good condition. I don’t see any problems in the photos, and the seller doesn’t have any condition notes. Also note the original tassel.

Comments: Two lengths of Brussels Duchesse, I’ll assume they are the same pattern, but not sure. What is unusual about these is that the Point de Gaze has no needle-made ground – it is just placed in the middle of the bobbinlace motifs. Comments: This seller listed something quit similar (see the Oct 28, 2012 Alerts). There I took a guess at Russian with the looped tapework which widens into some ‘guipure’ type work, but that’s just a guess. Condition on this one is a bit rough, some holes and stains, frayed edges, dark color.

Comments: I’ve seen some really nice pieces from this seller, and this is no exception. A good Brussels Duchesse flounce, just wish there were more of it.  Raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze inserts. The bobbinlace is fairly flat, but with a nice curving design. Comments: A light border of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net.  The design is fairly sparse, no fancy fillings, and flat bobbinlace with a simple gimp. Comments: A Point d’Angleterre handkerchief. This is basically a fine Belgian bobbinlace with Point de Gaze ground. In this case there are actual inserts of Point de Gaze – nraised work. That’s unusual. I don’t see any of the elaborate needlelace fillings that would really put this over the top, but it is still a beautiful design nicely worked.  Seller cites some tiny breaks in the ground, but overall very good condition.

Comments: An interesting tatted handkerchief with especially nice joining to the center linen. Also a good whitework embroidered monogram. Comments: The great majority of Maltese pieces are made up of smaller strips sized to the long cylindrical Maltese pillow. The strip piecing together is quite obvious here, and I think the various strip designs aren’t too well matched for the end effect. Individually the strips are interesting, with some unusual guipure patterns and an almost ‘snowflake’ ground (wish there were closeups of this). The condition looks good from what I can see in the photos – seller indicates it was recently laundered.

Comments: One of the most elaborate French bobbin winders I’ve seen. From the Haute Loire region, note the fine chip carving on the base, just what you look for in French Provincial antiques. It is a windmill type winder, unfortunately the vanes of the windmill are missing. Otherwise it looks intact. The piece is dated 1830, with the name of the maker, ‘Pier’ also engraved on the swing arm. For the age the condition has expected wear, but overall very good. Lots of interest in this piece.

Comments: A composite cover backed with blue silk. These come up occasionally, and attempt from someone to take older laces in a patchwork to create something new. Not the later Normandy lace patchwork; this is more an attempt to preserve some very old laces. This one has inserts from many laces, all basically Northern Italian Milanese, some Abruzzi pieces, and also some plaited that could have come from anywhere – one does look Genoese. Dating is probably late 17th early 18th c, although there do appear to be some modern pieces also. Condition is basically good, note several age stains. But I don’t see any tears or other damage.

Auction ends: 1 day 23 hours from 11/15/2012 7:11 MST
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Point de Paris works so well with table linens – it’s a heavier lace and the undecorated clothwork can match the actual textiles used beautifully. Figural work is very common, here I see some birds flanking a flowerpot – pottenkant variation. This set has 11 placemats and 1 table runner. The thread is quite fine here and the work is excellent. Unfortunate that one placemat is probably missing, amongst linen collectors small details like that tend to matter. The set looks in very good condition, basically unused.

Comments: A mounted ñanduti doily. It’s a small piece with good detail. Three roundel designs with a nicely done grid center. Note the characteristic large palm leaf motifs around the edge. Condition looks very good, no doubt the mounting helped. There’s an article pasted on the back of the frame with some fascinating information about Itaugua the major ñanduti center. I learned a lot in reading it.

Offered by: Ebay seller ronayo33, BUDOS, Aquitaine, France
Comments: A Spanish mundillo covered in purple velour with a pattern started and some tangled bobbins. See also 230878933915 for a similar item from this seller. This example has a nice flat working surface and a secondary pad at the top to support bobbins thrown backward, a little harder to find pieces like this. There’s a drawer at the back. The roller is stopped with a pin, probably not original.  Condition looks a little dirty, but in working condition. Sometimes the cloth comes detached, here it seems to be nailed down through the edging braid.

Comments: The tulle backing should come off this piece. It’s a Beds dress front with an interesting roundel pattern. I think the neckline is part of the pattern, but not exactly sure how the pattern fits in here. It’s an interesting piece, almost a stained glass rose window look. Condition looks very good, note the crisp plaited edge.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse narrow scarf. No roses in the Point de Gaze inserts, but a pattern of very interesting decorative fillings. The bobbinlace has raised elements and is well done.  Altogether a nice piece. Seller cites one or two small breaks, but doesn’t say where, and some light tanning dots. Overall very good condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A deep Honiton collar with some unfortunate holes; condition is short of good. This could be repaired. The lace itself is a kind of combination of sophisticated roses and veined leaves, with more snail/slugs elements surrounding them.  The design is approximately symmetric, and very full, like an English garden. Note the different tally fillings in the rose ce3nters.

Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: Brussels bobbinlace appliqued on machine net. Some nice needlelace fillings in the flowers. It’s a more Art Nouveau design that you sometimes see in later application pieces. Nice tulips – but I do find the design in the ends a bit thin. But it is meant to be mounted as a fan, so that’s probably part of the intent. Seller cites some age marks, and I don’t see any damage to the net from the photos. Overall very good condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: Not sure from the title and description if there’s a napkin missing or not. And I’ll take it on faith that it’s Zele – seller doesn’t offer documentation. The size is obviously impressive, and the condition is so good that it probably wasn’t used much, if at all. The design is a grapevine motif with some larger flowers, and I do like the ‘reticella’ bands that divide the various sections. I’m missing the figural work that would have really put this over the top. Technique is quite even and appropriate to the size of the piece.

Offered by: Ebay seller gede34, dans mon grenier, France métropolitaine
Comments: An elaborate embroidered net in the form of an alb flounce and two cuffs. I think it’s tambour, but the photos aren’t close enough to really examine it. The design of flower masses connected by swags, and a deep lower border is quite romantic, no religious symbolism that I can see. Seller cites some old restorations and a few small holes, so basically good condition.  I’ve seen a number of these religious vestment pieces recently, mostly out of France and Belgium.

Comments: A Maltese oval mat, very good condition. Pay attention when you see Maltese with the plaited star ground (kat stitch/point de Paris, I don’t know the specific Maltese term). Usually indicates a better quality piece, with good guipure work. I like the use of the woven leaves defining the leaf veins.

Despite the continuing damage from Hurricane Sandy, Karen and Bob are proceeding with the November auction.  There are a number of excellent lace pieces, starting with lot 67.  The laces skip around a bit, another set starting at lot 127. A number of very good lappets in lots 67, 71, 127, 129 (nice Point de France), 130, 136. Other lots include fan leafs, collars, and various flounces – see the great Chantilly piece lot 132. Starting Price: $9.99
Auction ends: Nov 11, 2012 18:22:18 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller deonino, In Loving Memory of Capt. JOHN W. DiSTEFANO, United States
Comments: An oval veil, Brussels needlelace application on machine net. A complete needlelace applique is unusual.  The design depends totally on the needlelace clothwork – minimal filling accents. The work is a little thin and not too crisp. It looks a lot like embroidered net. Unfortunately there aren’t any really good closeups to evaluate the technique, but I’m going with needlelace applique. There is an attached headdress in the same kind of lace, whether it is gathered from the rest of the piece, I can’t tell. Overall very good condition, just a few pinholes, which you would expect in this kind of net.

Comments: Three pages of the lace sample book of designer Ethel Traphagen (others have been reviewed on the Ebay Alerts before). This set is basically early Valenciennes and Binche (which usually turns out to be Valenciennes). The pieces are not in very good condition, but it’s an interesting set.

Comments: A bonnet veil of needlerun embroidery on machine net, look like Limerick (although it’s hard to attribute these to any particular center). A good heavy lower border and sprigs scattered regularly in the upper net.  In this sense it is a good competitor to the Caen blondes. Condition is good, a few repairs and minor holes.

Comments: This seller sold a similar cuff/neckpiece set from the last Alerts, and this week is offering several similar pieces. I’ve changed my mind a bit about attribution, I think these are Belgian Gros Point copies. The firm of Mini-Dansaert was known for this kind of work. It’s a wonderfully exuberant 19th c interpretation of Gros Point, in excellent technique. The two pieces look to be from the same set. The lace itself looks intact, but I think I see some staining – or perhaps bad shadows, see the second photo in the listing. Overall good condition.

Comments: Another 19th c Gros Point copy, probably Belgian. One of the collar ends looks cut off, the other might be intact. There are a few areas where brides have come loose, see the lower right edge in the first photo. But most areas are intact.  Again, a fun interpretation of Gros point.   See also item 121014205541 for some fragments of this lace offered by the same seller.

Comments: I don’t often review whitework embroidery, but this one looked special. There’s enough drawnwork to start calling some elements lace-like, and the embroidery is wonderful. Seller calls it Swiss Appenzell; I don’t know enough about this kind of embroidery to tell, so will accept as given. The condition is excellent.

Comments: 4 pieces of a narrower Belgian Gros Point 19th century copy; see items from the same seller above. Note the finely sculpted edging, much like what was used in Point de Neige in the late 17th century. What really distinguishes this lace is the varied  clothwork, and elaborate edgings to the raised work. Aside from cutting up this flounce, the condition looks very good.

Comments: A Bedfordshire bobbin guipure handkerchief.  Note the honeycomb stitch filling and nice raised work.  It’s not a terribly complex design, but quite typical and in very good condition. Seller indicates the need for a rejoin at a corner, but I can’t spot it.

Sold for 14.99 GBP, 1 bidder.

Comments: The last of the 19th Belgian Gros Point copies this seller has listed, at least for now. A beautiful example quite similar in style to the piece discussed just above. I can’t tell exactly, but it looks like the ends match up, so theoretically this could be pieced back together. Beautiful clothwork, nice picot work on the brides, and good embellishment of the raised edges. Other than the cutting, I don’t see any problems in condition.

Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A black net shawl with colored silk embroidery, quite impressive. I wish I knew where these were made, guessing a Spanish origin, but I don’t have any particular reason for doing that. The fringe might even indicate Chinese. One other showed up for sale not long ago, see http://tinyurl.com/agz6gsf. The embroidery stitch is quite unique, sort of a stem stitch worked as a filler. The use of color in the slightly abstract flowers is wonderful.  I spoke to the seller, she says it’s a rectangular piece with added fringe. She cites a few tiny openings, but overall very good condition. See also Ebay item 160918949414 for a similar piece, not so complex.

Offered by: Ebay seller baraud, Newton Abbot, United Kingdom
Comments: It’s probably a later Italian tape lace. Note the interesting lattice-like fillings in the central motif – it also has the same vertical symmetry found in Abruzzi laces. But of a later date. Chance it could also be an Eastern European border. Condition looks good, a little frayed along the upper border.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse bertha, and I have no idea if this is the true color. The bobbinlace is good but looks a bit ragged in condition in places. The raised petal needlelace rose inserts are pretty standard, however there are exceptionally large areas of the ring and knotted grids. Those really set this piece apart.  The photo color is really throwing me on evaluating the condition – it does have a bit of a washed appearance although the Point de Gaze seems intact. I’m calling it a bit short of good.

Comments: A large Irish Crochet frontpiece.  I’ll be doing an interview with Barbara Ballantyne just as soon as I get through her two latest Irish Crochet books – she has the best identification information to be found anywhere. These large frontpieces come up once in a while, and I think even she might put them in the ‘mystery’ category.  A symmetric design with a variety of styles, in very good condition.

Comments: A Carrickmacross shawl with a deep edge fringe, and a little collar. I can’t make out the edge to see if it has the typical looped finishing, so I’m not entirely sure I can say it is Irish, but it is quite beautiful. The sections of this shawl seem pieced together. Offered by: Ebay seller vintageblessings, Meridian, ID 83642, United States
Comments: A Point de Gaze bertha in very good condition – only one minor edge separation.  The name “Point de Gaze” is a modern invention, in original literature it is always called “Point de Bruxelles”. Even if it wasn’t made in Brussels. This piece has raised petal roses, a fairly standard design with no elaborate modes (decorative filling stitches).  It has a beautiful presence, quite well done.

   Sold for $245.00, 1 bidder.

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges long collar. Looks like there might be a few missing fillings in the flowers at the back, but otherwise in good condition.  It’s a nice bold design – the motifs are a bit large, but the overall effect is quite good.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse bertha with raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze inserts. The piece has a dense, typical pattern. Seller cites a few breaks at the edge and some small holes in the Point de Gaze mesh, not serious. Overall good condition.

Comments: Another Chantilly lappet scarf with some interesting treatment at the ends. I like the little cartouches on halfstitch ground.  Could be a French piece. There is some fraying at the end of one lappet, and several holes in the ground in the narrow piece. Basically good condition.

Comments: A Point de Gaze lappet scarf with some unusual shading effects at the end. It uses an interesting patterned ground to shade the leaves.  Good decorative heavily worked rings used as filling stitches at the ends. It is one of those flat Point de Gaze pieces where some of the very best work was done. Seller cites one pinhole and some age spotting, overall very good condition.

Comments: A Point de Gaze collar, nicely shaped, with raised petal roses. Some good decorative fillings – note especially the grids of circles and knots. The leaves and rose petals are slightly shaded with Point de Gaze ground around the edges.  An impressive piece. Seller cites a few pinholes, nothing major, overall very good condition.

Starting Price: $19.99
Auction ends: Nov 08, 2012 20:48:38 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller fleursdeslise, Rogers, CT, United States
Comments: I’m thinking this is a Burano set from the appearances of the clothwork stitches. There may also have been some kind of frontpiece or dress insert to attach to the longer choker collar. The raised edges on the motifs are quite elaborate and nicely done. These later 19th c copies of Gros Point were done in several places, including England, Austria, Belgium and Italy. Not always easy to tell them apart. This set is in very good condition but with some brown staining which should come out with an appropriately conservative wash.

Comments: This piece is on the German version of Ebay. It’s a good older Klöppelstand – the pillow and some bobbins are part of another auction – they look newer. The piece is at least 40 years old according to the seller, and looks in good shape. It does have a lidded box behind the piece with the nameplate (no name, however).

Comments: A deep Maltese collar with some interesting ground patterns in the center section – basically grids of woven leaves arranged in 8-petaled flowers. It’s a bit unusual.  Condition looks good, the seller cites a few loose threads, nothing major.

Sold for 35.00 GBP, 2 bidders.

Comments: I don’t think this was intended as a handkerchief – it’s too nice in the center. It is a muslin applique on machine net, quite elaborate with some relief embroidery. The motifs are fastened with chain stitch which might indicate Belgium, but it’s more delicately done than the larger veils one usually sees. Also note the nice circular esprits in the ground. An interesting piece in very good condition, although from the photos I’m not entirely sure what the color is.

Comments: A border of Rosaline Perle – I like the work on the feathery leaves and the chains of flowers with perle centers. Borders like this are a bit unusual. Seller notes some age discoloration and minor fraying at the cut edges, nothing serious.

Comments: A very collectible wide, long Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net – a true crinoline flounce.  It’s not the very highest quality design, but not much below and definitely aimed at the high end market. Needlelace fillings are limited to a few rings.  The condition from the photos looks very good, which in itself is quite unusual for this kind of lace. Seller notes a few small breaks and repairs and age discoloration, minor in a piece like this.

Comments: It looks like Floral Bedfordshire, but the complete use of guipure with no winding trails is unusual. And the plaited edge is rather subdued. But I can’t spot any real indication that it isn’t Beds, and a well done variation at that. Condition looks very good from what I can see.

Comments: A small Point de Gaze collar, with some raised petal roses. Note the little ports in the raised petals, and also the linked picots around the outer edges. I think they are trying to copy Alençon with this technique. It’s a well made piece, but the design is a bit conventional, despite the more advanced technical indicators. Very good condition, seller cites one minor hole and a little spotting.

   Sold for $76.00, 2 bidders.

Comments: An unusual dress insert of Irish Crochet. This is a rather early pattern, although I don’t think the lace itself is early. I find the design quite effective; kind of like a Venetian coraline. I see one hole, not too bad, and a little wrinkled. Basically good condition. Actually I wonder if it isn’t some kind of jabot, given the scalloped edges – dress inserts usually have straight sides.

Comments: A Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net, with a few discrete needlelace fillings. It is very wide, and I’d label it a Crinoline Flounce if the design were better. I tend to reserve that term for wide appliques of outstanding design, but perhaps I’m nitpicking. The motifs are a bit large and a little loosely worked, and the esprits aren’t too densly scattered – more in keeping with the design. But it’s a good upper middle market product. And it gets lots of points for very good condition. Note the seller has another item, 200839062098, a christening dress which uses another piece of this lace.

Comments: A handkerchief of Brussels application on machine net – with a few rings of needlelace used as fillings. The design stands well when viewed as a whole. Seller cites two repairs (see the darning in the last photo) and I see a few pinholes in the net. The piece has a soft, muted look to it up close, perhaps the result of washing and ironing?

Comments: A flat Point de Gaze border in a good collectible length. These laces can be some of the finest Belgian products, and this one is definitely a higher-end market piece. Nice work in the decorative fillings, especially in the oval cartouches. The design is quite naturalistic.  Condition appears very good, although I think I see a little staining at the top in one place. Minor.

Comments: This is quite the menagerie. I think this is an Italian piece, maybe made around Venice.  Yes, the Belgians did a little bobbinlace on this kind of scale, but not much, and it is poorly documented. I’ve been looking through books on this one, and what finally decided it for me was the figure of the merman with the split tail – that’s strong Italian maritime symbolism. And little details like the way the edge is treated, the form of the picots, the rather bunched up tape. I don’t see the ‘hook’ copies that Belgian ‘rococo’ is suppoed to promote. And some of the clothwork looks a bit strange, almost too regular, as if it were cut from another piece of cloth and edged. I don’t think it was, but it’s not a mark of Belgian work. Altogether a very interesting piece, in very good condition.

Comments: A Honiton frontpiece.  A bit snails/slugs era, and the design is somewhat thrown together making it rather asymmetric. But if you looks closely, the work is evenly done with good tally fillings. I like the neck edge treatment.  A few brown spots, and a broken bride here and there, basically good condition.

Comments: A Honiton Guipure border.  At 3.25″ wide, the motifs are smaller than you might think. Snails/slugs, a bit loosely worked, and the design is a bit confused.  Note the long reach of the bobbin-made brides tending toward a hexagonal mesh. A little frayed, not bad, and basically good condition.

Comments: I’m guessing Beds, with the flowers and veined leaves, and the little tallies. Although the motifs seem to have a gimp, which is odd. And if it’s linen, that’s not usual for Beds. Actually, it’s almost like a Dutch Lille without the ground.  But I think I’ll go with Beds.  Looks in very good condition, although I wonder if it’s big enough for a collar.

Comments: It does have an 18thc Milanese look, although nothing fancy. No decoration in in the tape, and just a plain star ground which conforms to the tape convolutions. The design is almost a pottenkant, but more resembles a l’Aquila tape lace, more widely spread.  Condition isn’t great, the lower edge looks added later and there are lots of holes.

Comments: A Beds handkerchief with great documentation from E Braggins & Sons, Bedford.  The lace is a typical Beds pattern, not particularly fancy.  I think I see a stain or two in the photos, nothing serious, and no obvious structural damage. Overall very good condition.

Comments: A Point de France border. You can see the candelabra symmetry elements in the 2nd photo down. It is hard to date something like this – I do like the picots on some of the cordonnets and rings.  The lower edge seems to have been sewn on later. There’s a good possibility this is a later 17th c piece, but I’d like a closer look first. Some of the buttonhole stitches look a bit elongated (ala Burano), and the rings look sewn on almost as an afterthought. And there is no edge relief to the smaller motifs. Still, it’s quite interesting. Seller cites some small holes, but overall good condition.

Comments: I got a shoutout on this one, although seller got my web address wrong… Italian polychrome bobbinlace is quite beautiful and fairly rare on the market. Much of it went to the US, so perhaps more will show up here in the future. I have not seen original sources with the motifs appliqued on machine net, so perhaps this piece has been modified. The edge of the net is rather frayed and some motifs overlap the edge. Then again it’s hard to tell if any brides have been cut off. Still an interesting piece.

Comments: 11/6/12 – this piece was posted very recently with a short auction time, so I’m adding it to the end of the 11/3/12 Alerts. Two wide flounces joined together to form some kind of cape, probably Brussels manufacture. There is a ground, but the photos aren’t close enough to tell exactly how it is made. It’s also a bit hard to tell how this was put together, and it’s hard to tell if the food edge is completely intact. I think there might be some raised edges in the motifs, but overall the work looks quite flat. It seems to be much better design than a typical Brabant, so I hesitate to put it in that class. There are a few small holes visible in the photos, but overall good condition. I think it could be disassembled and the individual flounces recovered.  An impressive piece.
