Yes, I missed the announcement of this event by 2 days. I’m much in the dark about Spanish lace days, and it may take a year to build a good database of all the events. I’ll need lots of  help from Spanish friends. Lacemaking in Spain is an astonishing industry with many lace days, hobbyists, and professional lacemakers.
Canals is a municipality in the comarca of Costera in the Valencian Community, Spain.

Ebay Alerts! Twenty items – January 15, 2012

http://tinyurl.com/6wauswq 19thc Brussels Lace 151″x 5″ Dentelle 3,85m x 12cm Application Angleterre
Size: 5″ x 151″
Starting Price: $95.00
Auction ends: Jan 16, 2012 13:14:05 PST
Seller: Ebay seller sirjle, PARIS, France
Comments: A border of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net. Some simple needlelace fillings. A surprising amount of variation in the repeats. It has a light, open design, and is in very good condition. I can’t see any problems from the photos. Unusual to be in such good condition for this long a piece.  This seller has a lot of this kind of material posted, click the ‘See other items’ on the posting.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/7wjqft4 19thc Unused Brussels Lace Hanky Mouchoir Dentelle application Bruxelles
Size: 13.8″ square
Starting Price: $55.00
Auction ends: Jan 16, 2012 13:16:22 PST
Seller: Ebay seller sirjle, PARIS, France
Comments: An enterprising person could probably put any center you wanted into this piece.  I wonder what the story is with the small circular hole. The bobbinlace is quite good, and the overall design effective. Seller cites one storage stain, and I don’t see any condition issues with the lace itself.

  Sold for $57.00, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/6vkarsa 19thc Large Brussels Duchesse Lace 69″x10″ Dentelle Bruxelles 1,75m x 26cm
Size: 10″ x 69″
Starting Price: $85.00
Auction ends: Jan 16, 2012 13:18:14 PST
Seller: Ebay seller sirjle, PARIS, France
Comments: A very collectible width and length on this piece. When a piece like this has the bit of clothwork where the brides come together, that’s a good sign of Bruges work. The design is bold and well executed, with some nice raised work. Condition looks very good, I can’t spot any problems from the photos.

   Sold for $155.50, 4 bidders.

Size: 28″ x 87:
Starting Price: $145.00
Auction ends: Jan 16, 2012 13:20:55 PST
Seller: Ebay seller sirjle, PARIS, France
Comments: I don’t do as much review as I probably should of the embroidered net pieces, and I’ll work on improving that. This one has a good ‘Blonde de Caen’ look, with with a well executed design extending all around the border. Seller cites a few small holes and stains, minor.

   Sold for $300.00, 2 bidders.

Size: 35″ neckline, 6″ wide
Starting Price: $9.99 with reserve
Auction ends: Jan 16, 2012 18:31:03 PST
Seller: Ebay seller jamiexmas*, Southbridge, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: A Point de Gaze bertha collar. Raised petal roses, note the little windows in the petals.  Some extensive ring fillings in motifs along the outer edge. Somehow the design looks a little big for the piece. There are some small holes in the net, and seller cites overall yellowing.

Sold for $137.50, 8 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/79hqjh5 Antique Brussels Lace Carved Mother of Pearl Fan w/ Carved Box
Size: 15″ wide open, 8″ tall.
Starting Price: $249.99
Auction ends: Jan 16, 2012 19:30:08 PST
Seller: Ebay seller drgrid, Saint Charles, Missouri, United States
Comments: A Brussels Duchesse fan with Mother of Pearl sticks, carved and gilt. Comes with a carved box. It’s pretty small. The lace is standard Duchesse with one Point de Gaze insert, can’t tell if the rose petals are raised. The tassel looks out of proportion, maybe a replacement? Not sure. Lace is in good condition, with overall discoloration.

   No bids.

Size: not given
Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Jan 17, 2012 06:07:34 PST
Seller: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A very interesting needlelace fan leaf. I’ve asked for some closeups of the cordonnet before I’ll definitely say Burano, although I’m thinking it’s probably OK. The design is good, if a little heavy handed for this form. Kind of a throwback to 18th c design, a good try, but could be a little more refined. Nice clothwork variations used as filling, along with some bridework. A few little holes in the mesh, but overall good condition.

$102.50, 2 bidders, reserve not met.

Starting Price: $75.00
Auction ends: Jan 17, 2012 06:15:28 PST
Seller: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: This ‘collar’ has a good early Genoese feel. Note the dense, compact leaves and and the kind of ‘smashed’ stitches in the rest of the piece. That’s largely a result of the finishing process which has been lost today. All the threads gather at the foot edge between motifs and continue as expected.  Unclear if this has been formed from another length – I’ve been staring at the termination of the motifs at the collar edges, but photo’s aren’t close enough to say if that’s deliberate. I might go earlier than the seller on this one. Condition is a bit rough, some broken brides, but I don’t mind in this case.

   No bids.

Starting Price: $24.99 with reserve
Auction ends: Jan 17, 2012 13:29:36 PST
Seller: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: I like to put up a whitework handkerchief like this occasionally, because the needlelace fillings are the same ones often used in Alençon lace. In the Atelier in Alençon they do both types of work. the embroidery on this one is excellent. A few small worn spots near the monogram, but otherwise very good condition.

$46.55, 3 bidders, reserve not met.

Auction ends: Jan 17, 2012 13:29:41 PST
Seller:
Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: A flat Point de Gaze handkerchief, excellent work. Some interesting spiderlike fillings in the little rings in various connecting bands. I’m especially intrigued by the 8-pointed flowers in the corners, they look padded somehow. The design is very dense and romantic – note also the extensions of the lace into the inner cloth. The picots on the edge are connected by a thread, in imitation of Alençon horsehair.  There are quite a few small holes in the net, but the rest of the lace looks fine.

   Sold for $150.00, 6 bidders.

Starting Price: $49.00
Auction ends: Jan 17, 2012 19:04:40 PST
Seller:
Ebay seller wahoo-mercantile, Wahoo, NE, United States
Comments: Most Proctor teneriffe wheels you see for sale are round – this listing has one round and the rarer square one. Made of gutta-percha (look it up on wikipedia). That little stained thing to the right is actually the top cover of the box that the loom came in. These looms are meant to be pinned to a solid pillow like a pinchushion. Proctor doesn’t seem to have made pillows for their looms, so these are probably handmade. This is a very nice set with original mailing materials.

   Sold for $262.00, 6 bidders.

Comments: An Irish Crochet dress front with extensive raised work in the leaves and flowers. I’m note sure if the top edge is original. It’s quite a bold design. Single picot brides, I don’t think they are Clones knots. Looks a little yellowed, but overall very good condition.

Seller:
Ebay seller jhartsong, Portland, Maine, United States
Comments: I’ll guess Belgian on this piece, but am not sure. It can always be surprisng what they come up with in pieced lace variations. Very interesting almost Art Nouveau design of leaves and flowers, note the crossing of some of the design over itself. Simple, effective, and in good condition. Just a little staining and a broken place in the foot edge.

Comments: A Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. The size is unusual, it’s more of a bonnet veil, but narrow and long. A sparse design with a few needlelace fillings. A few small holes in the net, but overall good condition.

Seller:
Ebay seller iside58, MESSINA, ME, Italy
Comments: I’m reviewing this because I’ll be posting a Collecting piece on lace-related chromolithograph advertising cards soon. This is a complete set of 6 in Italian – it also came in French. It advertises Liebig’s Extract of Meat, a sort of meat paste in a jar invented in 1840. The back of each card tells a little more about the lace depicted on the front. The set looks in good shape, and it might just be the photography, but examples in my collection have quite vivid colors.

Comments: Very similar to item 220925656511 that I reviewed in the January 8th Ebay Alerts. But narrower. This kind of laces dates back to the early 18th century, but here’s it’s more the late 19th early 20th century revival that led to today’s Point de Fee. A nice piece, very good condition, and it appears to be complete on both ends.

Comments: A good quality Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net. Has a few needlelace jours for accents – very simple. It’s a nice piece, the bobbinlace is good, and the esprits are over the top. Condition issue however, lots of small holes in the net. But I’d (almost) overlook that given the quality of the piece.

Comments: It’s a Cluny-type guipure, maybe Miracourt? It looks like silk, and note the heavy gimp wound silk cord. I like the combination of the gimp-surrounded half stitch with raised leaves, and the plain whole stitch guipure with no gimp. Very good condition, no damage that I can see.

Comments: A Point de Gaze border that looks bigger than it is, but I think that’s good. There aren’t any details of the stitches, but the design looks good and I can see some fillings. I like the 6 petaled flowers. Yes there are a few small holes and some marks, but condition isn’t bad at all. Worth a serious look.

Seller: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: This is a fun piece, and it’s big for a handkerchief. Note how the motifs go into the center cloth.  High quality Honiton, although not much in the way of fillings. Naturalistic design – I wonder what those lozenge shaped motifs are in the points. Square picoted bride ground.  Seller cites some marks in the cloth. I don’t see anything wrong with the lace itself from the photos.

Comments: An old Klöppelstand with what looks like a newer pillow. Lots of bobbins and patterns. The stand is painted blue-green with daisies. Not many photos, but I think it’s adjustable, and looks in very good shape. Look for wear on the footpieces in pieces like this, and pegged together is better than nailed or screwed together.

Comments: We haven’t had a bertha for a while. This one is a Duchesse with a few needlelace fillings, but more on the Bruges side in the bobbinlace. It’s quite narrow. The condition looks very good from what I can see.

Sold for 21.00 GBP, 4 bidders.

Comments: A nice Bruges collar with square bride ground. At least I think it’s Bruges. The technique isn’t terribly sophisticated, but the work is densely done, and I like the look of the piece. The motifs get a little smaller the closer you get to the neckline.  No needlelace that I can see. I don’t see any problems with the condition.  Take a look at other pieces this seller is offering, there’s some nice stuff.

Comments: A lacemaker’s lamp of Swiss design, called a ‘globier’. See my writeup in “Lighting for the Lacemaker” in the Collecting category at the right. Unusual to see something like this on a pedestal. It’s partially filled with water in the photo. Looks a bit lopsided on the base, but seems in good condition.

Comments: A ‘Crinoline’ flounce of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net, reasonable length for a collector.  Good design of flowers sprays nestled in the spaces of border swags. Lots of esprit in the ground, a sign of a better piece. A few needlelace ring fillings, but mainly this is composed of fine bobbinlace motifs.  Seller notes lots of holes in the net, and you can see small holes thoughout. And maybe some repairs. But the design wins me over.

Comments: A Brussels application on machine net scarf, a variation on a lappet scarf. There’s an interesting grid of needlelace fillings at the ends. The outer edge of roses and leaves is a little coarsely done, the inner filling of flowers with esprits on the net is better. All in all an unusual piece.  The condition appears very good, I don’t see any problems other than a few stains.

Seller: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: An interesting piece, but I’ve got some concerns about it being really early. I looked through Le Pompe, 1559 by Levey and Payne, which has lots of early plaited examples, although not quite the ‘punto in aria’ bobbinlace copy. I was looking for the specific treatment of the footer and the baseline of the triangles. There are similar zigzag patterns, but normally with picots. The work just looks a little too mechanical and shiny; it doesn’t have the age you might expect. And it is very long which would be extraordinary in an early piece. I think it’s a later, very good copy, in an appropriate width. L. Paulis in her Technique and Design of Cluny Lace (1921) gives many patterns for similar laces.

Comments: A Honiton applique on machine net. I’ll give it to Honiton because of the sturdy net ground, although to chose between this and Belgium is a close call. These are not typical Honiton motifs. Condition looks good, seller cites a few repairs. Minor.

Comments: This Honiton flounce looks like it could be another piece of Ebay #160700148761. Wish they were still together. A good design, well beyond snails/slugs, although I still think it has top/bottom balance problems. Very good condition.

   No bids.

Seller: seller marsull_inla, Los Angeles, CA, United States
Comments: A Point de Gaze handkerchief, flat design with lots of interesting fillings. This can be one of the best Belgian needlelaces. The design is naturalistic and flows well, but the piece isn’t well served by that blue-grey background. It gives it a bit of a washed out appearance, which I don’t think is accurate. A few small holes in the net, but overall very good condition. Fold creases are unfortunate, but I don’t think they damage the lace.

   Sold for $157.50, 3 bidders.

Comments: A mid 18thc Louis IV Alençon lace border of very good length and condition. It only has the reseau ground, minimal fillings, and the motifs are a little clunky. But to find a piece like this in such good condition and so long is rare. Seller cites scattered repairs, but they aren’t obvious from the photos.

   Sold for $72.55, 3 bidders.

Seller: Seller: Maria Niforis, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: I could buy the Lille attribution, especially with the tallies in the ground. Some of it looks like Beveran technique, especially the very outer edge.  The corners don’t seem to have been made for the piece. The inner border has a diagonal join at the corners, and the outer border design looks a bit chopped off at the some ends. And interesting piece. A few holes in the ground.

Comments: This little collar almost looks like Binche, but it is a flat Point de Gaze. No raised work, but it doesn’t need any. Nicely accented by some openwork around the outer edge. Condition looks good, a few pinholes in the ground. An interesting piece.

   Sold for $45.00, 1 bidder.

Comments: An impressive piece. It appears to be intact from beginning to end. This kind of lace has a history going back to the 18th century, and is still made today under the name Point de Fee. Generically we call it Binche, although whether it was ever made in the town of Binche is open to question. This particular piece appears complete from beginning to end. There was a revival of this kind of lace in the 1920’s, and I’m thinking it is a 20th century piece. If the thread proves to be linen I could change my mind, but I think it’s cotton. Condition is very good, I don’t see any damage.

Comments: A boldly colored tape lace with leaf flowers. It could be Russian, or perhaps Lepoglava. The condition appears very good.

Seller: Seller: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: A wide, densely patterned Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net flounce. It’s a kind of candelabra design that looks best slightly ruffled. Good bobbin work, with some needlelace rings as fillings. It is wrinkled in places, hard to tell if some of these are repairs. Scattered holes to the net and motif fillings.

$255.00, 8 bidders, reserve not met.

Comments: It’s unusual for a bobbinlace applique on machine net flounce like this to be finished on both sides, and 20″ is a little wide. I wonder if it isn’t two pieces sewn together. There does seem to be a seam along the length about 1/3 of the way down from the narrower patterned edge. The patterns of both parts do match – just thought it was a little funny. It’s a nice delicate piece, very long, and in very good condition.

$600.00, 9 bidders, reserve not met.

Comments: Brussels application on machine net, and for once the motifs are needlelace. Design is very dense, glat work, with a few ring fillings. It has a little puckered washed look about it. Otherwise condition appears good.

All entries must have at least one 5 or more pointed star within the design of the lace. If the star is not obvious, the lacemaker must place a note on the entry form indicating where the star can be found within the lace.

The contest has 3 categories:
The Doris Southard Award – Open to Teachers and Professional lacemakers
A $100 prize will be awarded subject to the decision of the judges.
All Lace Contest Rules must be followed with the pattern designed and executed by the entrant. A copy suitable for publication in the I.O.L.I. Bulletin of the original pattern and working directions must be submitted with the entry. Electronic submissions are preferred.

The IOLI is by far the largest lace organization in the United States. This convention has a very special meaning for me since I was a founding member and past president of the Minnesota Lace Society. Plans for the 2012 convention are well underway, and registration is due to start February 1st. The IOLI Mary McPeek scholarship is available to help with tuition costs, although it appears the due date of 1/1/12 for scholarship application is unfortunately past. Keep it in mind for 2013.
There is a contest associated with the convention, which will be the subject of a separate post. The organizers are also asking lacemakers to contribute 5-pointed stars in any lace technique (Minnesota is the ‘Star of the North’ state). See the Web Site pointer above for more information.
This post will be updated as details are finalized.
