http://tinyurl.com/7csa3fd FINE LARGE ANTIQUE BRUSSELS DUCHESSE LACE MOTHER OF PEARL FAN EVENTAIL C.1900
Size: 12″ long, 24.5″ wide when open
Starting Price: 0.99 GBP
Auction ends: Jan 08, 2012 11:35:39 PST
Seller: Ebay seller dayespast, DN14 6FE, United Kingdom
Comments: This seller is offering 5 fans in separate lots – I’ll only review one of them, but see Ebay #230726246988, #330666623778 (interesting tulip design), #230726251872, and #230726269310. They are all Duchesse with Mother of Pearl sticks. Lace on all looks in good shape, various damage to the sticks. Some have boxes. This is a very typical, middle market type of fan, and many survive today in good shape. Fairly conventional design of Duchesse bobbin lace motifs.

Sold for 150.00 GBP, 11 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/75euwjd LG DAINTY HandMade Antique Vtg ROSALINE LACE BERTHA COLLAR CAPELET
Size: 16.5″ neckline, 57″ outer edge. 9.5″ widest depth.
Starting Price: $29.99
Auction ends: Jan 08, 2012 18:01:17 PST
Seller: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: A deep Rosaline collar. The motifs are fairly large for this lace, without perls. Very simple straight connections; but mostly the motifs but against each other. The design is a bit scattered – hard to see the symmetry but it is there. Looks in very good condition, I don’t see any major problems from the photos.

   Sold for $74.00, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7ttrj27 SUPERB HandMade Antique Vtg TAMBOUR LACE WEDDING BRIDAL VEIL SHAWL PANEL
Size: ~60″ x 65″
Starting Price: $9.99 with reserve
Auction ends: Jan 08, 2012 18:04:19 PST
Seller: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: I don’t normally review embroidered net pieces, but I thought this one was quite good. Heavily embroidered net, lots of running stitches and a few fillings.  It’s basically a rectangular shawl, with good design all the way around, and accents in the corner.  Nice large sprigs throughout the inner net. The flowers have a kind of thistley look, but I don’t know where it comes from. Seller cites some discolaration, a few small breaks and small repairs. Overall the condition looks good.

   Sold for $299.99, 8 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/82ewmaw SUPERB WIDE HandMade Antique Vtg BRUSSELS LACE WEDDING FLOUNCE *19X78
Size: 19.5″ x 78″
Starting Price: $12.99
Auction ends: Jan 08, 2012 18:08:05 PST
Seller: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: This is an unusual piece. Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net. But the bottom of half of the net looks like it has a larger mesh than the top half. (see how that jagged seam runs through the top half but not the bottom part. Note the unusual large open areas in the motifs. Overall I find the lace a little, well, coarse might be a good word. But it makes a nice flounce. Condition, especially of the net, looks very good.

   Sold for $111.00, 10 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7dl6jz4 HandMade Antique Vtg BRUSSELS POINT DE GAZE LACE HANDKERCHIEF HANKY HANKIE
Size: 12.5″ square
Starting Price: $24.99
Auction ends: Jan 08, 2012 18:09:15 PST
Seller: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: A Brussels Duchesse handkerchief with Point de Gaze inserts in the corners. The design of both the bobbin and needlelace is very simple, no raised work in the needlelace.  Lace looks a little puckered, maybe washed? But overall very good condition.

   Sold fo r$73.00, 8 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/6qz3pvb Antique Vtg Brussels Duchesse Wide Lace Flounce Doll Dress Bear Trim
Size: 4″ x 64″
Starting Price: $0.99
Auction ends: Jan 08, 2012 18:29:19 PST
Seller: Ebay seller 4mimiandme, Brockport, New York, United States
Comments: A long, narrow length of Duchesse, on the Bruges side. No needlelace that I can see. It’s a simple repeat, nicely done, in very good condition.
Bear Trim? Lucky bear.

   Sold for $106.50, 6 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/88zaszu Antique Irish crochet lovely long length of trimming
Size: 3″ x 4 yards 6″
Starting Price: 29.99 GPB
Auction ends: Jan 09, 2012 05:46:06 PST
Seller: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: I love the bizarre motifs on this border, as if it is an early attempt to really imitate Gros Point. I can’t get a good look at the brides, or the header edge, so am not really sure if everything is original. But the width is consistent throughout. It is a bit outside the norm. Condition looks pretty good from the photos.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/7txlqqb Antique pretty Honiton handmade lace hat veil
Size: 30″ x 13.5″
Starting Price: 29.99 GPB
Auction ends: Jan 09, 2012 07:23:40 PST
Seller: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: The large motifs with a kind of tape-lace construction gives this away as Honiton applique on machine net. The condition looks very good, I don’t see any problems from the photos. It’s a nice, bold design, much in keeping with what was going on with Blonde de Caen in France.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/7pcr8gp ANTIQUE BRUSSELS APPLIQUE LACE FANCY PARASOL COVER
Size:
25″ in diameter
Starting Price: $24.99 with reserve
Auction ends: Jan 09, 2012 10:39:20 PST
Seller: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: A Brussels application on machine net parasol cover – looks never used, although there are a few holes throughout. Nice design seen from a distance. Even closeup the work stands scrutiny, although not the very top quality. Good needlelace fillings.

$425.00, 8 bidders, reserve not met.

http://tinyurl.com/6nb4oaa ANTIQUE BRUSSELS BOBBIN APPLIQUE SHAWL PT DE GAZE
Size:

Starting Price: $24.99 with reserve
Auction ends: Jan 09, 2012 10:39:23 PST
Seller: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: A small triangular Brussels application on machine net. Good naturalistic flower, some done in needlelace. A dense pattern on the lower edge all around, with esprits in the top net.  It is a bit worn, some holes in the machine net. It has a very romantic feel, and the lace itself looks nice on the black dress background.

$306.55, 6 bidders, reserve not met.

The LaceNews Channel on YouTube – Update for December 2011

http://www.youtube.com/user/lacenews

One hundred twenty-eight videos and three more playlists were added in the December 2011 update. Three previously listed videos are no longer available. That brings the current video total to 1,918 in 84 playlists.  The sorting convention for playlist videos is first by post author, then by date, then alphabetically by title. An exception is the Fashion playlist, which is only sorted by date. A pdf of all videos in their sorted order for each playlist can be downloaded at Playlist_Dec_2011.  If  you are into playing with databases, you can also download my original EXCEL file at Playlist_Dec_2011.  These files have three sections – first a listing of all the videos in their sorted order with the new additions shown in red. Deletions are shown in green (the author can delete a post, or an account can close). Second, a list of just the new additions.  Finally, there is a summary of activity in each playlist by month. If you see something that is missing, or if you have suggestions for better organization, please write to lacenews@gmail.com.

The playlist Update_December_2011, which is now the first one in the channel list in the old YouTube format, contains all the new videos added for December. The order is the same as in the pdf file. The Update_November_2011 playlist is still there, and the Update_October_2011 playlist has been deleted.

Newly added playlists include:

Belgium – Museums (1 video)
Poland  – Crochet (1 video)
Russia – Needlelace (3 videos)

Below I summarize the number of new videos added to existing playlists. In parentheses, I am also adding the number of videos in a playlist that were deleted outside of my control during the month. Note, I don’t always check every playlist for deletions with each monthly update – usually just the ones that have new additions.

Notes on the format:
No changes.

Here are a few new interesting things:
– I’ve changed the featured video on the LaceNews Channel home page to the new black and white video showing two generations of Cogne lacemakers from archival footage. Very unusual footage of this freehand technique.
– Several videos have shown up documenting the Birmingham exhibition ‘Lost in Lace’ (United Kingdom – Museums).
– I’ve added 7 new songs to Spain – Music. Not entirely sure of the words, but the titles seems to have to do with Encaje Bolillos.
– Check out the wonderful lace animation, Dagmar Bucanova – Balada v cipke / A Ballad in Lace (1981) , in Slovenia – Bobbinlace. I nearly chose this as the featured video – maybe next month.
– I’ve already done a post on the San Nicola Burano lace, and have now put up two videos covering the exhibition. I like how they superimpose the various draft cartoons showing the evolution toward the final design.

l’Aiguille en Féte is a yearly craft show in Paris devoted to needlework (embroidery, couture, quilting, knitting, lace, and others). It has two forms – a 4-day public exhibition, and a 3-day professional trade show, run roughly concurrently. There are several videos on the LaceNews Channel on YouTube showing the public event in 2010 – the theme of that year’s exhibition was lace. One site said they had 240 exhibitors and over 35,000 visitors in 2010.
Here are some lace-related exhibitors from the 2012 list:
Atelier Myllan – Duchesse and Bruxelles, (embroidery motifs, I think)
Centre de la Dentelle et des Métiers d’art de Binche
Torneria Germans Castells, mentions dentelle au fuseaux
Dentelle au Fil de l’Aure, mentions dentelle de Bayeux
Midon dentelle
Ricamo Italiano, Edizioni Dessein
Scharlaeken Handwerk, bobbinlace equipment

There are some classes associated with the public event, including “Le Reticello” by Giuliana Buonpadre, a 3 hour class, limit 10 persons, offered each day of the event. (30 EUR)

Ebay Alerts! Twenty items – January 1, 2012

http://tinyurl.com/89cnlvg ANTIQUE LACE–CIRCA 17THC.SCALLOPED LACE
Size: ~4″ x 14″
Starting Price: $65.00
Auction ends: Jan 03, 2012 07:53:17 PST
Seller: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments:  A piece like this certainly could be an early 16th century Genoese lace, or maybe Milan. The rather meandering textured tape in the centers is interesting, as well as the little ‘rosettes’ along the edge. No leaf plaiting, but that’s OK. This kind of lace was copied extensively in later centuries, but I think this one looks good.

   Sold for $72.99, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7gd3y4c ANTIQUE LACE-EARLY FLEMISH LACE BORDER
Size: 4″ x 30″
Starting Price: $45.00
Auction ends: Jan 03, 2012 08:06:28 PST
Seller: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A flemish piece bobbinlace, tending toward the Brussels with Brides more advanced stages. But without the really small motifs of the later 17th century that copied Point de France. I’m having a little trouble following the design in places, but it doesn’t look obviously repaired or reassembled. A good example of lace of this period, and the general condition seems OK.

   Sold for $45.00, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/7pj9djs ANTIQUE LACE-CIRCA 17THC POINT DE FRANCE
Size: 3.25″ x 18″
Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Jan 03, 2012 08:26:28 PST
Seller: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A little Point de France border fragment. Note the hexagonal picoted brides, which I think pushes it over to France rather than and Italian Point de Neige. Also the slightly larger flatwork motifs; It’s a hard call sometimes.  Lots of exuberant raised work, very nice. Looks cut down from a larger piece, maybe some reworking. But the header edge looks intact.

   Sold for $356.99, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/6sfeu9z ANTIQUE LACE- C. 19THC.HONITON LACE HANDKERCHIEF
Size: ~16″ square
Starting Price: $75.00
Auction ends: Jan 03, 2012 16:36:48 PST
Seller: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A Honiton handkerchief – note the extensive tally fillings and closely worked flowers. Not completely out of the snail/slugs period, but definitely a more advanced piece. A few broken brides and stains, but overall good condition. Looks a little puckered in places, wonder if it has been washed. The photos are glaring white, hard to tell.

   Sold for $75.00, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/7eqmwwj ANTIQUE LACE- C. 19THC.HONITON LACE HANDKERCHIEF
Size: set of 12, each 7″ diameter
Starting Price: $24.99 with reserve
Auction ends: Jan 04, 2012 11:35:46 PST
Seller: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: A set of well-done Carrickmacross guipure doilies. Long picoted brides, typical looped edge, and some needlelace fillings dead center. I don’t see any condition problems from the photos.

$37.00, 2 bidders, reserve not met.

http://tinyurl.com/7wwxata ANTIQUE HAND BURANO COLLAR
Size: 2″ x 15″
Starting Price: $24.99
Auction ends: Jan 04, 2012 11:35:49 PST
Seller: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: The shape of this Burano needlelace piece is a bit odd for a collar, but not sure what else it could be. I assume the right end is the same as the left – not well shown in the photos. It’s a typical pattern, combining mesh and bride ground work, with a little bit of snowflake filling in the center. Fairly simple design, nicely worked. Condition looks very good from what I can see.

   Sold fo r$24.99, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/7lam8f5 ANTIQUE HAND IRISH CROCHET LARGE ROUNDS SET OF 11
Size: 11 pieces, each 11″ diameter
Starting Price: $24.99
Auction ends: Jan 04, 2012 11:35:52 PST
Seller: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: A set of Irish Crochet doilies in the more geometric-design phase. Good quality, note the heavy raised rings in the centers of the motifs, along with a little needlelace edging inside some of the triangles. Some discoloration, seller says 4 have broken brides. But overall good condition.

   Sold for $51.00, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7vwxxms 17TH LINEN PUNTO TIRATO CUT/DRAWN WK & PUNTO EN ARIA
Size: 41″ x 67″
Starting Price: $24.99 with reserve
Auction ends: Jan 04, 2012 12:17:11 PST
Seller: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: An interesting piece to sit and think about. It basically has 3 elements – a bobbinlace border, some hemmed cutwork with reticella inserts, and filet netting embroidered into geometric patterns. It’s a good looking piece, but I don’t read anything really early about it. The reticella is a little coarse, and the bobbinlace looks sort of northern Italian 19th century. I like the treatment of the filet – interesting stitches. Very early ‘punto modano’ played with filet, but more in the sense of netting variations rather than this kind of embroidery. I will give the piece points for the ‘patina’, it has a soft hand, and the needlelace stitches are dense and compact, as one might find in very early pieces. But the whole thing together reads later 19th century Italian to me.

$78.77, 6 bidders, reserve not met.

http://tinyurl.com/6wq9sro ANTIQUE BRUSSELS APPLIQUE FROTHY LACE WIDE FLOUNCE 6 YD
Size: 11.5″ x 6 yards
Starting Price: $24.99 with reserve
Auction ends: Jan 04, 2012 12:17:31 PST
Seller: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: A good example of how Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net can be used to create very long pieces. The motifs are quite simple  with a few needlelace fillings. Note the esprits in the ground indicating a little extra effort. The work is well done, and the condition is excellent. For a piece of net this size that’s very unusual. It isn’t a big flamboyant crinoline flounce, but a perfectly serviceable middle-market product.

$227.50, 6 bidders, reserve not met.

http://tinyurl.com/76avk77 ANTIQUE BRUSSELS APPLIQUE WIDE FLOUNCE 4 YD
Size: 12″ x 4 yards
Starting Price: $24.99 with reserve
Auction ends: Jan 04, 201212:17:33 PST
Seller: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: A wide bobbin applique on machine net similar to the previous example, but more elaborate in design – little step above in the market aimed for. Again, simple but well done motifs, with a more windswept flower design. Again, the condition is very good.

   Sold for $530.00, 9 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7s2w3np Beautiful needle lace oval insert
Size: 15″ x 11″
Starting Price: $9.99
Auction ends: Jan 04, 2012 18:36:09 PST
Seller: Ebay seller calicogre, Ottawa, ON, Canada
Comments: Venise figural needlelace like this often gets passed by, or buried in the middle of some table linen. But I like the imagery of this piece. Around 1980 I made several visits to Zele, Belgium, and talked with women still doing this kind of work. It was a great opportunity to look at how patterns were design and the techniques used for execution. This reminds me very much of that tradition. Good close work, a few broken brides, but overall good condition.

   Sold for $28.00, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/72gqjjv Beautiful Hardanger Norway drawnwork table cloth.
Size: 40″ square
Starting Price: $39.99
Auction ends: Jan 04, 2012 19:43:09 PST
Seller: Ebay seller calicogre, Ottawa, ON, Canada
Comments: I’m putting up a lot of Hardanger videos in the December LaceNews Channel on YouTube update, and thought I’d complement them with this piece. It has quite elaborate work, and note the variation in the groundwork (look at it in the closeups – it isn’t quite as plain as the thumbnail leads one to believe). Hardanger drawnwork is an outgrowth of the very earliest drawn thread lace origins from Italy, and as such deserves our attention. Condition appears very good.

   Sold for $102.50, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/6vh64uq Bobbin Russian lace- wedding handkerchief
Size: 10″ square
Starting Price: $9.99
Auction ends: Jan 04, 2012 20:02:24 PST
Seller: Ebay seller calicogre, Ottawa, ON, Canada
Comments: In honor of the new Russian stamp, I found this nice handkerchief of what looks like Russian tape lace. Nice fillings, and an unusual bundle of threads down the middle of the tape. Might not strictly be from Russia, this kind of lace was made all over Eastern Europe and in Germany. But the basics are there. Very good condition. Wish we’d see more Russian lace on Ebay – so much was made but little migrates to the west. Puzzling.

   Sold for $10.50, 2 bidders.

Size: 11.5″ square
Starting Price: $39.99
Auction ends: Jan 04, 2012 20:13:17 PST
Seller: Ebay seller calicogre, Ottawa, ON, Canada
Comments: A Carrikcmacross applique (on machine net) handkerchief. The design is a bit simple, but I like needlerun fillings in the corner motifs. Good, strong looped border. I don’t see any condition problems.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/7uotda7 Bobbin lace doily
Size: 9″ diameter
Starting Price: $9.99
Auction ends: Jan 04, 2012 20:44:40 PST
Seller: Ebay seller calicogre, Ottawa, ON, Canada
Comments: An elaborate guipure design, I’d call it Cluny, probably from France. Another lace that often gets passed by, but I like this one quite a lot. Sharp, crisp plaiting on the outside, and nicely raised leaves in the halfstitch clothwork. Condition looks very good.

   Sold for $27.59, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/76thos9 19THC HAND PT DE GAZE LAPPET OR SCARF FINE
Size: 42″ long, 4″ wide at tip ends
Starting Price: $24.99 with reserve
Auction ends: Jan 05, 2012 12:49:14 PST
Seller: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: Point de gaze lappet scarf with triangular ends. The quality of the lace is quite high – very flat with a few fillings just at the right places for emphasis. The tendrils on the clothwork at the ends are very unusual and impressive technically. A few small holes in the net, but overall very good condition.

   Sold for $179.50, 6 bidders.

Starting Price: $24.99 with reserve
Auction ends: Jan 05, 201212:49:17 PST
Seller: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: A very long narrow Valenciennes border with square ground. Good design of roses. If you look at the closeups you can see where extra threads were cut off at the end of a motif – these were added during the work to give more density to the clothwork. But I find the work a little loose, maybe because so much of it was done. Not enough time to get a really tight clothwork.Condition looks very good, I don’t see any problems in the photos. Lace like this would have been used to trim bedding and nightgowns.

Starting Price: $24.99 with reserve
Auction ends: Jan 05, 2012 12:49:28 PST
Seller: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: An interesting Chantilly parasol cover.  Naturalistic flowers around the edges, and atypical fillings along the strut lines and in various cartouches. There is quite a bit of damage, I’m not sure if it’s racroc related or not. Looks more along the lines of where it was attached to the parasol frame.  Unclear how easy this will be to put right. But it is very unusual – I won’t speculate as to French or Belgium.

   Sold for $102.50, 4 bidders.

Starting Price: $49.99
Auction ends: Jan 06, 2012 14:50:20 PST
Seller: Ebay seller calicogre, Ottawa, ON, Canada
Comments: A bold Chantilly collar. The deep black color might indicate a Belgian origin. The whole space is well filled with flowers and leaves, although not very sophisticated. Little in the way of bobbin fillings, although you can see some honeycomb along the bottom edge. Those projecting points in the photo along the edge are pins. Scattered breaks in the ground.

   Sold for $49.99, 1 bidder.

Starting Price: $9.99 with reserve
Auction ends: Jan 08, 2012 18:08:54 PST
Seller: Ebay seller adtjmd, Hickory, North Carolina, United States
Comments: A Duchesse de Bruxelles rectangular shawl. The big Point de Gaze inserts at either end are unusual, a flower pot of roses and other blooms. Good decorative fillings surround the inserts and fill some of the bobbin motifs (unusual). The bobbinlace is very well done, with some raised work. It’s a fun piece. There is a little damage to the point de gaze net, and a few broken brides, but overall very good condition.

Collecting: Arts & Crafts – Lace: New Stamps from Russia – issued December 12, 2011

On 12th December 2011, Russia released four stamps titled “Arts and Crafts – lace”. The stamps are in triangular shape, arranged in sets of 4 into a square shape . I imagine that this is influenced by the new lace museum in Vologoda. Lace was and is extensively made in Russia in cities like Vologda, Elets, Ryazan, Novgorod, Tula, Vyatka and others. According to the web literature, the stamps show a Belevsky lace cape, an Eletskaya (Yelets) tablecloth, a Vologda napkin, and a Vyatka tablecloth (with the roosters). I’m not sure which is which, I don’t read Russian, so perhaps people could comment on this post with better information. They all look like Russian bobbin tape laces, but that is also not entirely clear.
The denomination appears to be 15 rubles, or about 46.6 cents US as of today. At least I think it’s rubles.

Design: О. Shushlebina.
Printing – Metallography.
Size of stamps 50х50х70 mm.
Size of block of 4 – 80х80 mm.
Edition: 720 000 copies (180 000 copies of block of 4).

As with most new stamp issues, lots of subsidiary material is appearing, see the figures below for samples. The stamps are now showing up on Ebay and DelCampe. Prices vary, but a complete set of the 4 squares is around 8 euros.

First day cover. Four additional covers with the individual blocks are also available.

Starting Price: 39.99 GBP
Auction ends: Dec 30, 2011 07:06:52 PST
Seller: Ebay seller jenniferanns123, Scotland , United Kingdom
Comments:  Documented E. P. Rose small pillow, 1936, with accessories. It might be the ‘pillow for travellers’ shown in early catalogs, althought the uprights supporting the pillow are lacking in this example. No details of the original invoice are given. A very interesting piece, appears in good condition.

Sold for 131.88 GBP, 2 bidders.

Starting Price: $75.00
Auction ends: Jan 01, 2012 05:36:16 PST
Seller: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments:  A Brussels Duchesse border, fairly wide. An unusual bell-shaped flower in the point de gaze inserts – I don’t think petals are raised. Bobbinlace is densely patterned conventional motifs, looks interesting from a distance.  Some broken brides and a few pinholes in the point de gaze ground.

Seller: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments:  A ‘Crinoline’ flounce of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net. Minimal needlelace elements in the decorative fillings. Naturalistic design of flowers and swags, lots of esprits in the ground. Definitely a high quality piece. Condition is a little rough, some small tears and repairs in the net. I don’t know the real extent of these, but I think they are minor considering the quality of the piece.

Starting Price: $595.00

Seller: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments:  An interesting combination of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net on top, and a more conventional Duchesse on the bottom. Not sure I’m all that fond of the combination from a design point of view, although it is growing on me the more I look at it. It is really interesting as a technical experiment. Nice pattern of buds in the upper ground. A few pulls and repairs in the net, overall good condition.

Seller: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments:  Around 1730. At the time this lace was made you can’t really distinguish between Binche and Valenciennes – in fact Binche was a rather small industry. I would generically call this Valenciennes with fond de neige, and it is a good example of the technique. I’ve been staring a lot at it trying to figure out if it was cut at the top, some motifs look a little more split in half than needed – but then that is a design technique, and without a closer look at the edge, I’ll call it complete. Nice work, varied snowflake grounds and fillings. One of my favorite laces, and in very good condition.  Get it off that ribbon and stored properly.

   Sold for $355.00, 5 bidders.

Size: ~20″ x 15″. 6″ high with roller
Starting Price: $199.99
Auction ends: Jan 03, 2012 11:42:19 PST
Seller: Ebay seller george-provencher, Yorba Linda, CA, United States
Comments: You can buy these pillows from Canadian maker Simon Toustou directly (http://stoustou.jalbum.net/catalogue/Tables%20and%20pillows/index.html), and his work is so high quality that it’s unusual to find one up for resale. I have one, it’s great! It’s a very heavy pillow, stuffed with sawdust. My only gripe are the drawers – they tend to drop out unexpectedly if you tilt the pillow. I’m not sure where this one fits in his size line, seems a little smaller than mine by about 5″ in width.  Seller cites a few scratches on the wood, nothing major.

   Sold for $258.51, 3 bidders.

This exhibition examines the cult of St. Nicholas of Bari through iconography, paintings (by Titian) and sculpture. It particularly highlights the May 2009 gift by Mrs. Maria Vittoria Coen Del Vecchio of  a 49 cm x 398 cm altar cloth made in Burano for the main altar of the Basilica of San Nicolo of Bari between 1930 and 1934. The piece shows 16 scenes of the life and miracles of St. Nicholas (the inspiration for Santa Claus). It was first exhibited at the 1934 Fiera del Levante, a trade fair held that is still held in September in Bari, Italy. Original cartoons for the lace were also donated and are on display.
Five lectures will be given in association with the exhibition, in particular note:
Sunday, February 12, 2012 (17:00) – Professor Doretta Davanzo Poli, “The lace of St. Nicholas”.
