Ebay Alerts! Eleven items – October 2, 2011

http://tinyurl.com/42qhmp7 ANTIQUE LACE- 53″ OF MECHLIN LACE
Size: 2.75″ x 63″
Starting price:  $35.00
Auction ends: Oct 04, 2011 08:54:01 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A border of late 18th century Mechlin, fine linen thread. This is a lace meant to be ruffled. The narrow repeat of leaf and flower along the border edge gives some stability to the piece when gathered as a border. Tiny sprigs are regularly scattered in the upper ground. Overall good condition, although the lower edge looks a little frayed in places. Normally a lace like this has tiny openings, pulls and sometimes repairs in the ground – this doesn’t seem to have too many of those problems. It’s also a good collectible length.

   Sold for $59.99, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3qat53r Lovely Antique Handmade lace Collar/Bertha
Size: 26″ diameter, 7″ wide
Starting price: 9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 04, 2011 12:00:47 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller baraud, Newton Abbot, United Kingdom
Comments: A Duchesse de Bruxelles bertha. The point de gaze inserts have no raised work, and appear in good condition. The bobbinlace is well done with some nice bell-shaped flowers. Overall condition is quite good, seller cites some stains and a few loose threads, but I’m having trouble spotting any breaks.

Sold for 124.00 GBP, 9 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3fgzrow Point De Gaze Lace Fan Leaf
Size: 8″ deep (I assume that’s the lace?)
Starting price:  $4.99
Auction ends: Oct 04, 2011 19:46:13 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller uniqueturtles, baltimore, MD, United States
Comments: An unmounted Point de Gaze fan leaf. The design is rather naturalistic, and roses have raised, pointed petals. Good jour fillings, and some raised rings in the centers of smaller flowers. A few holes in the net that might have come when a fan sticks were.  A little staining, but not bad. Some of the photos are a little skewed, I think it’s bigger than it looks.

   Sold for $127.51, 8 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3hertnm STUNNING CREAM VINTAGE LINEN TABLECLOTH WITH 9″ MALTESE LACE BORDER
Size: 52″ square
Starting price:  7.50 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 05, 2011 08:18:52 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller robinson199, Batley, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom
Comments: A square table cover with a deep Maltese border. Can’t tell if the lace is silk. The pattern is quite simple, alternating 6 petal flowers with triangular woven leaf fillings along the borders. I see three such insertions joined together for the inner pattern, and an outer border of rosettes, and an inner on of woven leaf crosses. No Maltese crosses in this design. the pattern is quite effective, the condition is very good – looks unused.

Sold for 23.00 GBP, 2 bidders.

Size: 7.5 cm x 6 m
Starting price:  7.50 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 06, 2011 11:48:47 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller utrillo42, Batley, Rhône-Alpes, France
Comments: A narrow border of Belgian Point de Gaze. The design is conventional, no raised work, and includes a little filling work. But it is very long, and apparently in quite good condition, just some stains. Basically I’m curious to see how this does in the market.

   Sold for $311.00, 9 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3mpl7h8 Lovely Antique Handmade Needle Lace and MoP Fan.
Size: 10.75″ excluding rings
Starting price:  9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 06, 2011 12:00:46 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller utrillo42, Batley, Rhône-Alpes, France
Comments: A Brussels needlelace application on machine net fan leaf. Note the monogram in the Center.  The design is quite detailed and tending toward the naturalistic. No elaborate fillings, just a few little rings for accent. Seller cites some damage to a few sticks, but the lace seems to be OK. Just some storage discoloration.  It’s a nice looking piece.

Sold for 71.78 GBP, 7 bidders.

Starting price:  $24.99
Auction ends: Oct 06, 2011 18:06:56 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller ADTJMD, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: A Bruges Bloemwerk handkerchief – the design is actually quite nice. It goes a bit beyond the standard rose/leaf pattern to include some interesting scalloped brackets in the corners. I don’t see any obvious problems in condition, maybe just a small brown spot here and there.

   Sold for $79.89, 6 bidders.

Starting price:

Auction ends: Oct 07, 2011 15:56:33 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller smarthatpete, IL, United States
Comments: A collar of  Rosaline. A lot of bobbin raised work, and it’s hard to tell if the perls are needlelace or bobbinlace. This is a good example of this technique designed for a small piece.  Well worked, the weaving is tight. Condition looks very good, I can’t see any obvious problems. The seller’s name is ‘smarthatpete’, and I normally don’t comment on seller pricing. But here Pete isn’t that smart. This is priced pretty low and someone should grab it.

Sold for $29.99, Buy-it-Now. Took 8 minutes for this to sell after I posted this Ebay Alerts!

Auction ends: Oct 09, 2011 05:25:45 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller gradea36, exeter, Devon, United Kingdom
Comments: Wow! I’m not exactly sure what it is or how it works – maybe something to make netting? I rotated the picture so it is standing upright. Hopefully the seller has more information on exactly what it does. It could be quite important.

   No bids.

Auction ends: Oct 09, 2011 18:02:34 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: A small Point de Gaze handkerchief. The condition is very good, I can’t see any problems. The design is composed of fairly simple elements, and it’s hard to tell if the rose petals are layered. No elaborate fillings. But overall this presentation is excellent and very appropriate for the form.

   Sold for $61.00, 10 bidders.

Starting price:
  150.00 EUR
Auction ends: Oct 11, 2011 03:25:33 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller roman20100, Valence, Rhône-Alpes, France
Comments: A Queyras pillow, quite narrow, with an inscription that says something like “1785 FAIT POUR” and can’t read the 4th side. This pillow is made for freehand lace, and there are reproductions being made today. So you do take a chance, even with the description. The bobbins do look good, and note the little door in the center of the side. There might be some lace around the circumference – wish there were more photos. Authentic examples of these pillows, which were usually used with a stand, are quite rare. A similar inscribed pillow with an unrelated Maurienne stand and good provenance was sold by Roger Sala on the Leboncoin.fr site, presumably for the asking price of 2,500 EUR about two months ago. Unfortunately the listing was removed after the sale.

Sold for 710.00 EUR, 3 bidders.

The LaceNews Channel on YouTube – Update for September 2011

http://www.youtube.com/user/lacenews

Two hundred and six videos and two new playlists were added in the September update, for a current video total of 1,552 in 68 playlists.  A complete pdf of the titles in their correct order for all the playlists can be downloaded at Playlist_Sep_2011.  You can also download my original EXCEL file at Playlist_Sep_2011.  The new additions are shown in red. If you see something that is missing, or if you have suggestions for better organization, please write to lacenews@gmail.com.

Newly added playlists include:
Armenia – Needlelace (1 video)
Poland – Bobbinlace  (5 videos)

Below I summarize  the number of new videos added to existing playlists:
Australia – Museums       3

Tatting 3                              11
United Kingdom – Bobbinlace   3
USA – Bobbinlace                 1

Notes on the format:
I readjusted the Spanish bobbinlace playlists to get a more equal number in each.
You might note that there are some strange things in Ireland – Irish Crochet, since IC shows up in many countries. I plan to leave them there until there are enough to justify breaking off into IC in a specific country.
In the future I think I’ll leave all the updates for the month in a separate folder for a month or two as well as putting them in their proper playlists. Even with the Excel and pdf catalogs, it can still be difficult to find new videos.  Unfortunately it’s too late to do that for September.
I found new search terms for Spanish bobbinlace, Palilleiras and Encaixe, which produced a number of videos that I missed before. And I’m always picking up a few earlier ones for many subjects that didn’t make it in previous searches.

Here are a few new interesting things:
– The ‘Edwardian Farm’ videos covering Honiton Lace with Pat Perryman in period costume are now available in the United Kingdom – bobbinlace playlist.  This is well known in the UK, but this seems to be the first time we’ve had access to it in the US.
– Be sure to check out the wonderful ‘Needle lace from vakifli village’ in Armenia – Needlelace. This is the only one showing this technique that I’ve been able to find.
– The installation of the outdoor ‘Tsunami’ piece from the Love Lace exhibition is now on the Australia – Museums playlist, ‘Janet Echelman Tsunami 1.26 Installation Slideshow’
– The only folk dances using bobbinlace pillows I’ve ever seen are now in the Brazil – Bobbinlace playlist.  For example, see ‘Balé Popular,Mulher Rendeira,São João do Piaui’, and ‘Dança Mulher Rendeira.mov’, that I find just a little disturbing.
– There are now 445 videos on tatting. So how can you stand out amongst the competition? Try nonsolocrochet’s (in Tatting 3) technique – look like you aren’t wearing any clothes. Very effective, and she’s a great tatter too!

Size: not given
Starting price:  $166.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: September 29, 2011
Offered by: Ebay seller cork123, Cleveland, Ohio, United States
Comments: A Bruges Bloemwerk handkerchief, fairly narrow lace border. The design is conventional, no needlelace fillings.  Picoted brides.  Condition appears very good, I can’t see any problems in the photos given.

   Still available.

Auction ends: Oct 02, 2011 11:00:38 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller nelliegardener, Evanston, Illinois, United States
Comments: A banquet-sized tablecloth and napkins of probably Italian needlelace and free reticella, with provenance. It’s a fairly heavy design that does not appear to have been much used. A little light staining.  The ground decoration is quite interesting, but the flower and leaf motifs are a bit conventional. The very best of these pieces have extensive figural work – this one is a bit plain.

   Sold for $1,375.00, 11 bidders.

Offered by: Ebay seller anibri49, WATERLOO, Belgique, Belgium
Comments: Painting, oil on plywood, of a Flemish lacemaker around the 1930’s. I have no idea if this is original or a copy. The Belgian artist is Charly Leonard (1894-1953). I really have no expertise in painting, but I thought it was quite lovely. Unfortunately to look up auction prices for painters these days you have to subscribe to an online service so I’ll leave that as an exercise for the interested bidder.

Offered by: Ebay seller barrioux, SERMENTIZON, Auvergne, France
Comments: Lacemakers footstool from Canton d’Arlanc, a small village in Southeast Puy de Dôme. It has an unusual slatted top, and appears in very good condition. Seller states that the wood is beech, at least that’s how I think the phrase bois de hêtre is translated. Excellent seller, I’ve gotten a number of equipment pieces from him.

Sold for 12.50 EUR, 1 bidder.

Starting price:  $44.99
Auction ends: Oct 02, 2011 12:11:24 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller sugarbaby2011, The North Pole, Canada
Comments: Hard to tell where this handkerchief edge is from – it shares characteristics with Beds, Cluny, Spanish, Maltese, German guipures, and in areas where lacemaking was started as a missionary effort. Publication of designs like this in the late 19th early 20th centuries doesn’t help attribution much. And because of this indeterminacy, and the slightly heavy thread, it doesn’t often get a lot of respect. But this is a piece with a lot of impact, well made and in very good condition.  Thread looks like linen, which could favor a German origin.

   No bids.

Offered by: Ebay seller fil-et-toile-de-lin, france, France
Comments: Bruges Bloemwerk handkerchief with a name embroidered in the cloth. Conventional motifs, picoted bride ground.  Looks in good condition from what I see, but there aren’t many closeups.

Offered by: Ebay seller mulgaking, Victoria, BC, Canada
Comments: Bruges Bloemwerk collar with well-worked motifs and bride ground. This seems to be a week for this kind of lace on Ebay, and this particular piece is a very good example of the technique. The motifs are closely worked, and it almost looks like cutwork.  Condition looks very good, and the absence of any wear on the neckline makes it look almost unused.

Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: Flounce of Brussels Application on machine net. Basically bobbinlace with little needlelace grids as fillings. the design is fairly simple – undulating waves with flowers in the spaces. No special treatment of the blank ground above the design. There are a number of holes in the net, and condition of the net is very important in a piece like this.

   Sold for $60.99, 5 bidders.

Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: A dress front of Brugges bobbinlace, with varied fillings and a double picoted bride ground. There is a little needlelace decoration in the centers of some flowers that mirrors similar work in Point de Gaze, but not exactly. Enough to mark it as a Belgian product. I don’t quite buy the asymmetric design in the bib – but overall it’s a more ambitious design than usually seen. Condition looks very good, seller cites some discoloration and a straggling thread here and there.

   Sold for $49.99, 1 bidder.

Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A Snails/Slugs period Honiton handkerchief. Bride ground, grids of tallies used as fillings.  Note the rather continuous tape-like pattern of the motifs, a very characteristic 18th century Devon trait – the S/S designs are an outgrowth of that technique. This is a typical example, well made and in very good condition. A few small stains, a few pulled threads, all very minor.

Starting price:  22.99 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 03, 2011 08:35:38 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: Honiton to a collector can be many things – motifs with a bride ground (Honiton guipure), with a needlelace ground (Honiton Point), and Honiton applique on machine net. This is an example of the applique, and it is meant to compete with contemporary Brussels applique on machine net. The Honiton motifs are larger and usually have more extensive fillings than the Belgian product. Devon workers were competing with Belgium, and needed a product that could be turned out quickly at a reasonable price. This is a good example, the motifs are not very sophisticated, generally patterned on the usual snail/slugs of the guipure product.  As with all machine applique, condition of the net to a collector is extremely important – it is extremely difficult to repair. I see a few pinholes in the net in this piece, and one or two loose spots in the motifs (e.g., the left endpoint).  But it is unusual for the small size, normally Honiton applique was used for larger veils and scarves.

   No bidders.

Starting price:  49.99 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 03, 2011 08:49:17 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A Maltese silk bertha. This is a little unusual form for Maltese/Gozoian lace, normally they went more for borders and larger pieces like shawls. This piece has a typical three-part construction, the inner, middle, and outer edges were made separately and sewn together. I like the rosettes of leaves in the center section, this is unusual. Note the ‘kat stitch’ alternating with the Maltese crosses in the outer edge. There is some fraying – I particularly note spots in along the inside edge and the end terminations.

Offered by: Ebay seller vieuxjeuvintage, Willow Cottage, Lancashire, United Kingdom
Comments: A Maltese silk mantilla – oval headpiece with long lappets. the top part of the oval can be folded over to form a kind of double collar. The center roundel flares out into the lappets with some good guipure work. The pattern is basically Mltese cross alternating with small rosettes, and there is an extensive ground of woven leaves, well done. Condition looks very good, although overall it appears a bit wrinkled. Sign of washing? Maybe. It is a bit on the heavy side for this form, but an impressive piece.

Comments: Collar and cuff sets that survive together don’t come along too often. These are Duchesse de Bruxelles, with unusually shaped raised leaf roses. The needlelace fillings in the roses are several concentric half circles of rings – unusual. There is a slight asymmetry to the design that is quite nice. They do seem a little wrinkled, and I see a few separations between motifs, but overall good condition.

Comments: Bertha collar of Duchesse de Bruxelles. The needlelace inserts have roses with a single raised petal. Motifs are quite standard for this lace, with some raised work in the bobbinlace. I don’t see any major problems in condition in the photos.

Comments: Metallic laces in this width and condition are pretty rare.  it has been fastened onto a velvet band – not sure of the original intent. The ‘thread’ is normally trips of plated metal (gold here) wound around a silk core – you can see the silk showing through in a few places.  sometimes flat narrow strips are used as thread and woven into the design, especially in torchon-like fans. Design in laces like this are usually Torchon based – this one has some unusual work on the 6-petaled flowers. Spain or France, there’s little reliable information on the history of lace like this.  Condition is helped a lot by the backing, often these are badly contracted and it takes a lot of work to get them to lie flat.
