The three major Croatian lacemaking techniques, Pag Needlelace, Lepoglava Bobbinlace, and Hvar Needleweaving, were recogized as a UNESCO Intangible Heritage in 2009. See http://tinyurl.com/446j4u8 for the complete UNESCO citation, including the application form which gives numerous historical details.  The International Festival has been held in Lepoglava yearly since 1997, and is a major event for the town. Activities are numerous, and held in sites throughout the city. These include exhibitions from Croatia, Slovenia, Russia, Estonia, and Italy.  Special note is given to the “Freehand Lace – Common European Roots” exhibition, from collection of Marianne Stang, the Ethnographic museum, and the Museum of Arts and Craft in Zagreb.

Ebay Alerts! Ten items – September 8, 2011

http://tinyurl.com/3tqdosg carreau de dentellière
Size: ~32 cm x 27 cm
Starting price: 60.00 EUR, 65.00 EUR Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: 11 sept. 2011 10:23:15 Paris
Offered by: Ebay seller franoise6560, Romagnat, Auvergne, France métropolitaine
Comments: There are a lot of old lace pillows on Ebay from the Haute-Loire region in France, usually in pretty bad condtion. This one is a little unusual, and the drawer survives. The drawer is in the front, and the pillow has a high profile – condition also looks quite reasonable. The seller says it is 20th century from the d’Arlanc (Puy de Dôme) region. It’s unusual to find an attribution on an item like this.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/3e85gp4 Antique handmade Irish crochet lace wedding top 1910
Size: ~32 cm x 27 cm 52 cm across from underams, 62 cm shoulder to cuff, 48 cm long
Starting price: 85.00 GBP
Auction ends: Sep 11, 2011 10:50:09 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller linskapet, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway DG6 4UU, United Kingdom
Comments: An enthusiastic design with some unusual highly raised motifs.  Looks like much of the ground is a twisted needlelace.  Photography is a little difficult, the dress form has a funny printed bodice that makes the piece difficult to see. And it’s also hard to get an impression how long the sleeves are.  Condition looks basically, good, although there appears to be an open seam under one arm.  Bottom edge is unfinished.

Sold for 234.99 GBP, 5 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3cgp9km MALTESE LACE BABY BIB ? SENT FROM MALTA 1917 ( WW1 )
Size: 9.4″ x 6.4″
Starting price: 7.50 GBP
Auction ends: Sep 11, 2011 12:04:38 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller hamstershoard, Scottish Borders, United Kingdom
Comments: This little bib is an interesting form, but otherwise hasn’t got much in the way of design going for it. But there is one important thing – it comes with the original packaging as sent from Malta on March 13, 1917. Which puts it squarely in the WW1 period.  Very interesting.  Condition is OK, there seems to be a stain at the mid left, and a detached section center front.  Looks like cotton, although it’s hard to tell from the photos. Might be silk.

Sold for 16.00 GBP, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3px8cyq 1.27m BEAUTIFUL 17c ITALIAN/FLEMISH LINEN BOBBIN LACE
Size: 4″ x 50″
Starting price: 65.00 GBP
Auction ends: Sep 11, 2011 13:10:05 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller vanye90, UK, United Kingdom
Comments: It would help to get a look at the backside of this piece to see if the ground threads are carrying over – that’s more a sign of Flemish lace of this period. I think I’ll go Itlian here. The design is a little heavier, and the decorated lower border seems more Italian. It’s often a hard call in pieces like this. It looks like it might be cut along the top, but the design appears intact. There is one join, but overall condition looks ok.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/3rpwc9v SUPERB HM Antique Vtg BRUSSELS LACE LAPPET SCARF TIE
Size: 3.5″ x 43″
Starting price: $24.99
Auction ends: Sep 11, 2011 18:12:41 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: A good tie with lappet ends of Brussels application on machine net. The bobbinlace motifs have some needlelace accents, mainly raised rings in the centers of flowers (a little like Rosaline perle), and also used a lines of ‘beads’.  A pretty typical romantic design. Condition of the net is important in pieces like this, I do see a few small holes and there appear to be a few repairs.

   Sold for $162.50, 7 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/43datd3 BIG ANTIQUE BRUSSELS BOBBIN LACE HAND FAN MOP ABANICO
Size: 14″ long
Starting price: $499.00
Auction ends: Sep 12, 2011 09:10:20 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller edurey, Montevideo, Montevideo, Uruguay
Comments: There are often interesting things coming from this dealer in Uruguay. This is a large fan of Brussels application (needle and bobbin) on machine net.  A little damage and repair to a few ribs. The lace looks in overall good condition, with a few stains, and the area at the end of the front guard looks a little strange. I think it’s the guard, not the lace. Overall it’s an impressive looking piece.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/3jw2uc9 Antique Brussels lace pretty bodice insert
Size: 12.5″ long center front, 6″ max width
Starting price: 19.99 GBP
Auction ends: Sep 13, 2011 09:38:15 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: I agree, it is pretty, and there’s a good reason. This is Belgian 19th c Point d’Angleterre, fine bobbinlace motifs combined with a needlelace point de gaze ground. The work on the many small motifs is lovely. The design is basically a combination of a few simple motifs, giving a kind of diffuse effect of bunches of flowers.  There are a number of holes in the net – this would be worth repairing if you can find the thread. These pieces were usually sold in sets, with 2 cuffs and a neckpiece.

Sold for 31.00 GBP, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3m2mkdp Beautiful Ant. Handmade Lace Collar/Bertha-Point de Gaze
Size:
5.5″ deep, 24″ diameter
Starting price: 9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Sep 14, 2011 12:00:29 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller baraud, Newton Abbot, United Kingdom
Comments: Very good Point de Gaze bertha, note the several layers of raised petals on some roses. Also the window decorations on those petals.  Some nice fillings inside various motifs. Overall it has a really nice presence, and the condition appears excellent.

Sold for 92.00 GBP, 9 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3skkz99 Fine * vintage irish crochet lappet collar jacket
Size:
none given
Starting price: $99.99
Auction ends: Sep 14, 2011 12:55:16 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller thequaintrosecottage, victorian cottage, United States
Comments: It’s definitely hard to see how this all goes together, wish it had been shown on a manikin.  But I do like the horseshoe pattern, and especially the little areas of Clones knots. I’m quite interested in how people use large pieces of Irish Crochet as cloth.  Condition seems good, but hard to tell from the photos.

   No bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/43yf5mp Loupe de dentelliere sur pied 19 éme
Size: 20 cm diameter, 30 cm high
Starting price:
380.00 EUR  Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: Somewhere around September 21st
Offered by: Ebay seller BROCFROM.A.V, BOURGOGNE, France
Comments: A very similar piece in very good condition sold on Ebay a few weeks ago for over 300 EUR – another Buy-it-Now. That tends to bring pieces like this out of hiding. See the Lighting article on LaceNews in the Collecting category – you see these both in France (especially in Normandy) and in England.  This one appears to be in very good condition.

Ebay Alerts! Eleven items – September 4, 2011

http://tinyurl.com/3mhaduk ANTIQUE LACE- CIRCA 17THC. FLEMISH LACE
Size: 5″ x 25″
Starting price: $55.00
Auction ends: Sep 06, 2011 06:52:44 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A short 17th c Flemish bobbinlace with bride ground. The top looks cut, bottom intact, and there’s probably been some other reassembly in places. This is Flander’s answer to Milan tape laces, and eventually the motifs break up into pieced laces.  Nice fillings, and clean execution, especially in the holes in the tapes.

   Sold for $55.00, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/3mal76e ANTIQUE LACE-EARLY BOBBIN LACE
Size: ~4-1/2″ x 75″
Starting price: $195.00
Auction ends: Sep 06, 2011 07:04:09 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A good collectible length of Italian tape lace. Both edges look original, and the slightly ornate bottom edge is typically Italian.  Looks 18th century, might be Milan, but also has elements of Abruzzi l’Aquila in the symmetrical tape. A bit worn, but overall good condition.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/3lelg8w ANTIQUE LACE-61″ of ALENCON LACE
Size: ~4″ x 61″
Starting price: $75.00
Auction ends: Sep 06, 2011 07:35:50 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A good border of ‘Herren’ Alençon with brides tortillée in the main part, and ordinary reseau along the border. This is a lace meant to be ruffled, as on men’s shirts, hence the name. Simple design of sprigs in the ground with little fillings in the edge motif. A very typical example, which is probably quite finely done. A number of small holes mainly in the reseau, not so much in the main part of the border.

   Sold for $75.00, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/3l8b4nd EXQUISITE ANTIQUE BRUSSELS POINT LACE HANDKERCHIEF
Size: 13″ SQUARE
Starting price: $45.00
Auction ends: Sep 06, 2011 17:25:39 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller les.petits, Corona, CA, United States
Comments: Photographing this piece on the shiny beige background actually produced an interesting picture, but I wouldn’t recommend it as a regular habit. A Duchesse de Bruxelles handkerchief, with the unusual feature of bobbinlace motifs on a point de gaze ground in the corners. That’s all the needlelace I can find. One small separation in the upper left corner, and some small tiny holes in the cloth.  A little hard to tell, but it has a kind of rumpled washed appearance, but that might just be the photography. I like this piece, especially the small flowers that have a rosaline feel, but with a gimp.

$56.00, 5 bidders, reserve not met.

http://tinyurl.com/3pyqjjm RARE HM Antique Vtg HONITON LACE APPLIQUE *MONO “ISR”
Size: 1-3/8″ square
Starting price: $0.99
Auction ends: Sep 06, 2011 18:07:55 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: This is one of four related posts, see also Ebay numbers 160645382248, 150656692341, and 150656693263.  These are great, especially since there’s an advertising card in the photo.  Mrs. Sharp just might be Mary Sharp, author of “Point and Pillow Lace” (1st ed 1899, 2nd ed 1905, 3rd ed 1913). The card is not included in any of the sales (I emailed the seller who also said they were hard to photograph since they were so small). These small Honiton pieces are wonderful, and well made. I can’t see any damage.

   Sold for $10.49, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/43dl2tb Fabulous Antique Nanduti/Tenerife Lace Doily,Ecru,Mint
Size: 10″ diameter
Starting price: $44.99
Auction ends: Sep 06, 2011 19:18:02 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller chartreaux, Danville,, CA, United States
Comments: An old-school Ñanduti doily, and by that I mean it is really well done. 4 different roundel pairs surround an elaborate needlewoven rectangular grid in the center. I don’t see any condition problems. This is the quality you see in the Ñanduti museum, http://tinyurl.com/6gecfqg.

   Sold for $72.99, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3w2dmdu Antique Maltese silk lace lovely handkerchief
Size: 11″ square
Starting price: 14.99 GBP
Auction ends: Sep 07, 2011 09:08:32 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: An good Maltese handkerchief. I like the guipure border in toward the cloth. Otherwise it’s fairly conventional, but the work looks very good, with very minor condition issues.

Sold for 22.00 GBP, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3pr6pr2 Fine Antique Brussels Point De Gaze Lace Handkerchief
Size: ~13″ square
Starting price: $75.00
Auction ends: Sep 07, 2011 18:21:33 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mdauctionsales, Chester County, PA, United States
Comments: A very good point de gaze handkerchief, although not quite as over-the-top as some. it’s more a point de gaze than a Zele tradition. I especially like the star shaped fillings next in the corners. They’ve also gone the extra mile in extending the lace into the linen center. In staring at the photos, the only condition issue I saw was a little pulling away from the linen in the upper right corner.

   Sold for $441.01, 6 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3pvbl4k Antique Lace Fan w Point de Gaze Lace & Mother of Pearl
Size: 20.5″ across, 11″ high.
Starting price: $345.00
Auction ends: Sep 07, 2011 19:09:59 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller clst, Commerce, Texas, United States
Comments: A good Point de Gaze fan with Mother-of-Pearl sticks. There aren’t too many closeups, so it’s difficult to give a full assessment of the lace. But what I can see looks in very good condition – no breaks that I can see. There does seem to be some spotting lower center and a little on the top edge.  No raised petals in the roses, which is good since they are hard to fold. Some interesting variations on simple ring fillings. It’s a fairly plain design, but works actually quite well. I know it’s probably unfair to grade this way, but lace fans with MOP sticks aren’t usually really top of the line. This one is definitely better than average.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/3ml3pbu *Vintage MALTESE Silk Bobbin Lace SHAWL/MANTILLA #1*
Size: 27″ max width, 68″ long
Starting price: $14.99
Auction ends: Sep 08, 2011 12:06:28 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester., Worcs., United Kingdom
Comments: A very good Maltese Mantilla.  This is nice. A really interesting roundel in the center, and variations of the Maltese Cross against a ground of flowers made out of woven leaves. Seller says it has been washed, which in a piece like this tends to show along the edges. But I don’t see any bad problems. Good job on the photography.  Note, an identical piece is also offered by this seller at http://tinyurl.com/3p782kz.

   Sold for $102.50, 6 bidders.
Second example, sold for $125.83, 6 bidders.

Starting price: 65.00 EUR
Auction ends: Sep 10, 2011 11:58:29 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller jack_russel, Seraing, Belgium
Comments: This seller has had a number of very nice lacemaker figures listed in the past few weeks.  Flemish pottery figure, medium size, not too difficult to find this model for sale. I don’t know the manufacturer. Condition appears very good, I don’t see any problems.

Sold for 65.00 EUR, 1 bidder.

The LaceNews Channel on YouTube – Update for August 2011

http://www.youtube.com/user/lacenews

One hundred ninety-seven videos and three new playlists were added in the August update, for a current video total of 1,345 in 66 playlists.  A complete pdf of the titles in their correct order for all the playlists can be downloaded at Playlist_Aug_2011.pdf.  You can also download my original EXCEL file at Playlist_Aug_2011.xls.  The new additions are shown in red. Things are gradually settling down, the number of older videos that I missed on the first pass is getting smaller as time goes by. If you see something that is missing, or if you have suggestions for better organization, please write to lacenews@gmail.com.

Newly added playlists include:
Fashion (2 videos)
Sweden – Museums  (2 videos)
United Kingdom – Museums (1 video)

Below I summarize  the number of new videos added to existing playlists:
Australia – Museums     17
Bobbinlace Instruction  10
Brazil Bobbinlace             6
Brazil Needlelace             1
Canada – Bobbinlace       2
Columbia – Irish Crochet   7
France – Bobbinlace        3
Ireland – Irish Crochet   6
Italy – Bobbinlace           10
Italy – Museums              4
Malta & Gozo – Bobbinlace      1
Portugal – Bobbinlace      1
Russia – Bobbinlace         11
Russia – Museums            1
Spain – Bobbinlace           93
Tatting                               11
United Kingdom – Bobbinlace    2
USA – Bobbinlace              5

Note, I split the Spain-Bobbinlace playlist into two parts since it was hitting the 200 video maximum.  I also put some of the Ireland – Irish Crochet videos into a new playlist called Columbia-Irish Crochet. Very good, all in Spanish.  I also got a lot of help from a good friend in Sweden who not only identified some Swedish videos, but also finally got the right font for Russian bobbinlace – кружево.  Many lace people know this word, but it’s not so easy to type into the computer.

Here are a few new interesting things:
– Be sure to watch Ada Pou as she is starting to come to the end of her current Catalonian Blonde piece in Spain-Bobbinlace-1 (Verge del Pilar de punta al coixí modalitat blonda catalana).  Hold your breath as she starts to cut off all those bobbins.
– There are many new interviews from the Powerhouse museum for the Love Lace exhibition.
– I’m starting to look carefully into the Brazilian song “Olé, Mulher Rendeira”. This is probably the most famous lace-related song ever, although English speakers likely have never heard of it. There are hundreds of videos, and I’m trying to find ones that specifically tie the song to bobbinlacemaking. I’ll be doing a LaceNews post on the song shortly.
– I also started a ‘Fashion’ playlist since lace in fashion has been popular for several years. This isn’t just to promote someone’s ads, but rather to track the progress of the current revival. I’m looking at some designers who started promoting it since the trend took off with Miuccia Prada’s Fall 2008 collection.
– A video is now available in several languages for the re-opening of the Burano lace museum in the Italy-Museums playlist.
– I opened a United Kingdom-Museums playlist and entered one video on the royal wedding dress display at Buckingham Palace. The video at the exhibition done with Sarah Burton on the dress construction is not publicly available.
– Some amazing sights can be seen in the Russia-Bobbinlace playlist connected with the recent Vogolda museum lace conference. 570 lacemakers all working in the square in front of the museum is a very impressive sight.  I’ll be doing a post on this event soon.
