Ebay Alerts! Nine items – September 1, 2011

http://tinyurl.com/3rzrbwt antique european large lace fan MOP sitcks estate fine
Size: 9″ high, 24.75″ wide
Starting price: 40.00 GBP
Auction ends: Sep 02, 2011 15:35:43 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller gertjanvanveghel2009, Rotterdam, Netherlands
Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges fan with mother-of-pearl sticks. One stick next to the back guard is missing the tip for 1.5″. The lace design is a rather thrown together assembly of flowers and leaves within a top and bottom border. A few very small needlelace rings for accent. Lace condition appears good.

Sold for 63.61 GBP, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3gvvfg3 ANTIQUE LACE-C19THC BRUSSELS LACE COLLAR W/POINT DE GAZ
Size: ~35″ x almost 6″
Starting price: $75.00
Auction ends: Sep 04, 2011 06:49:22 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A good Duchesse de Bruxelles bertha. Good raised work in the bobbinlace, and at least one detached petal in the roses (one might be missing). Hard to tell the details, there aren’t any closeups. ONe dark stain, a few openings. This has been washed.

   Sold for $77.00, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3mt52h5 ANTIQUE LACE RETICELLA LACE CUTWORK SAMPLER RUNNER
Size: ~27″ x 59″, I think
Starting price: $195.00
Auction ends: Sep 04, 2011 12:27:14 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: An interesting linen.  I think that what looks like reticella is actually plaited bobbinlace everywhere.  There’s also some filet panels and a little embroidered cutwork.  It feels 20th century, and imitation of early Genoese.  Italian, probably. Seller cites a few minor openings and some small repairs to the linen.  Ebay #160645331748 is another piece along this line.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/3hjc3bz Vintage Bobbin Lace Collar Pretty
Size: 15″ neck, 4″ wide
Starting price: $145.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: Sep 04, 2011 12:43:42 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller gb-best, New Ringgold, Pennsylvania, United States
Comments: A Bruges duchesse collar with very large motifs. But they are quite well arranged, and I think the design is rather effective. Seller cites light age spotting and minor bride breaks.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/4ycyq52 SUPER RETICELLA LACE TABLECLOTH
Size: ~41″-42″ SQUARE
Starting price: $395.00
Auction ends: Sep 04, 2011 13:22:20 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: I’d love to get opinions on this, but I think it might be Pag, mainly from the little ribbed center spider. But it lacks the typical looped picots. So it’s probably an Italian piece maybe from Aemilia Ars? The design is very traditional using a linen base. Quite a fine and impressive piece. Some openings in the linen, but since the linen is part of the base for the reticella, you have to live with it.

   Sold for $395.00, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/43apnvj LG HM Antique Vtg BRUSSELS POINT DE GAZE LACE Collar
Size: 5.75″ wide, 39″ neckline, 79″ outside edge
Starting price: $69.99
Auction ends: Sep 04, 2011 19:27:29 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: A very good Point de Gaze bertha, with raised rose petals. The roses have a lovely, naturalistic design.  Note the windows in the raised petals, sign of a better manufacturer. A lovely piece with very minor defects.

   Sold for $365.00, 14 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3ekdxp8 SUPER HM Antique Vtg BRUSSELS POINT DE GAZE LACE Collar
Size: 4.5″ at the widest point, 30″ long, neckline 18″
Starting price: $49.99
Auction ends: Sep 04, 2011 19:43:04 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: An interesting Duchesse de Bruxelles collar with a separate neckpiece. The design is much better than average; large centeral panels of needlelace edge with bobbin motifs. Good needlelace fillings and raised rose petals. Seems to be more than a few holes in the needlelace ground and some fillings.

   Sold for $137.50, 5 bidders.

Starting price: $49.99
Auction ends: Sep 04, 2011 19:52:57 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: A good Duchesse de Bruxelles fan leaf with a prominent center panel of point de gaze. A number of small  holes in the needlelace ground.

   Sold for $51.00, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3vxcz3g HM Antique Vtg SILK MALTESE LACE Collar Capelet *20f 2
Size: 7.5″ wide, 20.5″ neckline, 60″ outside edge
Starting price: $24.99
Auction ends: Sep 04, 2011 20:25:07 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: Quite a wide Maltese collar with basically three bands of construction. The middle band is of dense leaves with St. John’s cross medallions. Basically good condition, although some attachments look broken where the middle leave band connects to either edge.

   Sold for $52.00, 4 bidders.

August 29, 2011 – The One Year Anniversary of LaceNews!

It’s been a great first year, and I’d like to sincerely thank all LaceNews readers for their support. The whole project has been an amazing experience for me. Here’s a little summary of activity on the site:

43,325 hits on the site as of this morning, and 121 active subscribers. The maximum hits for one day is 452 on July 28, 2011, when the Powerhouse Love Lace winners were announced.
307 posts with 89 comments.  Many were revised with new information or corrections (as I have already done to this one).
92 Ebay alerts featuring 721 items
6 Auction announcements
13 specialized collecting articles
4 notices on competitions
5 convention announcements
10 exhibition announcements
3 interviews
Lace events – 109 in England & Ireland, 4 in Europe, 8 in the US & Canada
4 notices of extraordinary lace for sale
1 fiction download
1 music study
3 museum profiles (and one in progress)
2 specialized lace profiles
12 Lace-of-the-Month profiles (well, 11 actually, still working on the June writeup)
1 post in the more scientific ‘Quantitative Analysis’ category
1 Stolen item report

Of all these, the Puncetto Valsesiano post is by far the most popular, with 2,259 hits, followed by Tunisian Chebka Lace at 605.  The Tatting Lace of the Month post is third at 550, followed by Collecting French Santon Lacemakers, 432, and the Californian Poppy exhibition at 393. Then comes Lace for Sale: Stella at 296, Lace for Sale: Youghal Border at 288, Collecting Flemish Pottery Lacemakers at 285, Lace of the Month: Bucks – January 2011 at 252, Collecting Belgian 1000 Frank/200 Belga Banknotes at 233, and the Interview with Maria Niforos, 214.

And then there’s the new LaceNews Channel. After the August update I anticipate the collection will have grown to about 1300 videos in 61 categories. YouTube is completely confused on their Channel View accounting, but I estimate that there have been about 2400 views since it was started on July 14, 2011.

After the whirlwind first year (including the big July forest fire) things are settling down a bit.  Search parameters are more solid, and I look forward to expanding announcements to more events in other countries. Several more interviews are in process, and every time I travel I try to visit at least one new museum. The last big project is the LaceNews Web site, which has been in the works for the past 3 years. It will be up by the end of the year, over 2200 pages (I kid you not) of lace!

Oh, and I’ll also be teaching an intensive class in traditional Alençon lace technique at the 2012 IOLI convention in Minneapolis, just as I was taught at the Atelier National du Point d’Alençon in 1980. As far as I know, I’m still the only American ever allowed to study there. This is the only time I’ll ever teach this class.

My deepest thanks to everyone, and there’s much more coming!
Laurie

Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: A very good Duchesse de Bruges handkerchief. the work is quite tightly done, and the bridework very delicate. Overall quite a nice example. Seller cites a few broken brides and some spots, but they aren’t obvious from the photos.

   Sold for $73.10, 4 bidders.

Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: These little butterflies come up for sale fairly regularly and were a nice tourist item made in the early-mid 20th century. This one is quite nice with a variety of filing stitches, and note the windows in some of the clothwork. Very good condition, I can’t see any problems.

   Sold for $102.51, 4 bidders.

Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: Stole of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net with good needlelace fillings. The design is largely confined to the ends of the piece – giving it quite a light appearance. Things like this can be much more elaborate. condition is everything in a piece like this, since the machine net doesn’t always hold up too well over time. condition looks very good to me, I can’t see any problems from the photos – see seller’s notes.

Offered by: Ebay seller sirjle, PARIS, France
Comments: Good pair of Point de Gaze needlelace cuffs. Four layered petal roses each, raised rings in the centers of flowers, one nice rosette filling. Fairly conventional design. Aside from some brown spotting in places on both, they look in very good condition.

Comments: Small Vlaams Aardewerk lacemaker by Vande Voorde, early 20th century. This is one of the smallest sizes he made (see the LaceNews article on Flemish Pottery lacemakers at http://tinyurl.com/4baktku). Vande Voorde was known for wonderful naturalism in all his figures. This one has two small chips, one in the base, one on a corner of the pillow, otherwise very good condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller ashley21057, Hydes, MD, United States
Comments: I think this is handmade – wish there were more closeups. I don’t see any honeycomb which is unusual. It’s hard to say what’s going on at the right end, almost looks like a stick is still attached. Seller says there is some glue residue in the guard area. Nevertheless it’s a lovely piece, and the design is well suited for folding.

   Sold for $56.55, 2 bidders.

Offered by: Ebay seller alyonka81, Natchez, MS, United States
Comments: You see early 20th century sets like this by Cotterel and of course our overly-hyped American Torchon Lace Company, but I’ve never seen one by Cartier-Bresson. Wonder how it got to Natchez, Mississippi? The pillow, book, bobbins, and patterns are all there. This piece has been used, so it’s hard to say what hte original packing looked like. A rare piece, there’s already a lot of interest in it.

   Sold for $143.40, 9 bidders.

Starting price: 3.99 GBP
Auction ends: Sep 01, 2011 00:16:57 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller bricabracworld, Kidderminster, United Kingdom
Comments: An English upright bobbin winder, note the space in the clamp meant to accommodate the spangle. I’m thinking it’s a later piece, the earlier ones usually have a metal, not wooden screw at the bottom. And there’s not much wear. Hard to tell, there might be a nick in the upper right finial just below the ball? Might just be a trick of photography.  These pieces are delightful, although the flat windmill ones seem to work a bit better.

Sold for 26.00 GBP, 6 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3emeekc Biscuit la dentellière poinçonné numéroté

Starting price: 50.00 EUR
Auction ends: Sep 01, 2011 11:35:37 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller papyhote, Belgique, Belgium
Comments: I’m going to guess from the mark that this is a German piece by Wallendorf, although the mark lacks an obvious ‘1764’ date below the W. Or maybe it is there and the photo isn’t focused enough to see. This firm made two versions of this figure, the other one is more elaborate.  (An elaborate one sold last February for 178.77 EUR, I show the photo next to the current offering below.) It’s a lovely, serene piece.  The seller notes several flaws which are hard to see in the white bisque, so you will have to decide for yourselves.

Sold for 151.01 EUR, 5 bidders.

Starting price: $20.00
Auction ends: Sep 01, 2011 18:33:30 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller smtraversy, Concord, NH 03301, United States
Comments: A high-necked Irish Crochet blouse with shamrock and flower designs. Note the dangling element in the front and good raised work in some flower centers. More of a Rose of Sharon pattern on top, larger motifs with bride grounds on bottom. There are several holes, especially around the neck.

Comments: A good Brussels Duchesse flounce, with nice raised work in the bobbinlace. The needlelace is small, just a few inserts of roses with no raised petals. Hard to see why they bothered since the bobbinlace is fine on its own.  Condition looks very good, I don’t see any problems.

Comments: Big enough for a bertha. I like this a lot, Flemish pieced lace with big bold motifs and lots of varied fillings, and nice picoted bride work.. Condition looks very good, I can’t see anything wrong. Someone put some thought into this one.

Auction ends: Aug 27, 2011 09:02:54 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A very good Youghal handkerchief. Motifs are quite interesting with varied stitches even in the leaves. I like the little trellis like filling just to the left of center on the third photo down.  This piece has some damage to the lightest ground stitch. Seller also cites some spots and a hole in the material.

$138.50, 3 bidders, reserve not met.

Offered by: Ebay seller lunnantiques, London, London, United Kingdom
Comments: An interesting set to have survived together. There’s not enough closeups to get a really good look at the mesh, and a very fine motif Brussels applique on droschel would be my second guess. I’d love it if they are Lille, but somehow I’d expect a slightly coarser linen ground.  Anyway, the lappets are great – I can’t see a center join which might indicate a later date. These all have been cared for with good repairs – just a few minor holes now.

   No bids.

Offered by: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, NEW ENGLAND, United States
Comments: A good single-piece lappet set of Valenciennes, 2nd half 19th century. Condition looks very good, I can’t see anything serious from the photos. There is no ombre shading, and the motifs aren’t the most sophisticated. But as a shaped piece of Val it’s unusual and works very well.

$24.99, 1 bidder, reserve not met.

Music: The Bonelace Weaver’s Song – Part 1

And upon Sep. 5 1681 I had accasion to go to Chesterfeild, where I met with a bone-lace-weaver with whom I burgined to take a doughter of myne apprentis, Elizabeth by name so for 3 pounds 10 shillings we agreed and bound she was Sep. 14 being Chasterfeild faire day for 4 years…

The Autobiography of Leonard Wheatcroft of Ashover 1627-1706
Derbyshire Record Society Vol XX, 1993

Leonard Wheatcroft Jr. (May 1, 1627 – January 1, 1707) was born and lived in Ashover, Derbyshire, achieving fame as a poet and diarist. See http://tinyurl.com/44cxcel for a short biography detailing his many other interesting activities. The passage above, from his journal now in the Derbyshire records office, describes the apprenticeship of his daughter Elizabeth to a bone lace weaver in 1681.  Wheatcroft married Elizabeth Hawley in 1657, and they had nine children. Their daughter Elizabeth was born on June 25, 1670, and lived to be 81 years old.  Eleven year old Elizabeth was not too fortunate in her training, her first teacher (her ‘Dame’) died in 1683. She was then bound to another presumed lacemaker, Mary Jenings, who died half a year later.

The Bone-Lace Weaver’s Song was written by Wheatcroft about 1650 and celebrates the independence of the professional English lacemaker. Roy Palmer published Whitecroft’s Bonelace Weaver poem in the “Ballad History of England” (1979) from a manuscript in the Ashover Parish Records, D253A/PZ11, Derbyshire Records Office. The words were also published in Bedfordshire County Life magazine, issues 18 and 43.

Helen Watson and Susie Adams with the group Muckram Wakes made a recording of the song on an album called “A Map of Derbyshire” in 1973.  The English folk singer and historian Roy Harris (1933-) wrote the music for this effort, and he is usually so credited by other artists. Graeme Meek recorded a version on LP on the album “Strawplait & Bone Lace”, with an accompanying songbook published by the Luton Museum and Art Gallery in 1984. Other performances include Chris and Siobhan Nelson at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCWE8ondbNg, posted October 5, 2010, and Lucy Ward with the group Cupola, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wnm1juXALjI, posted February 6, 2011.  Two audio versions are available on Itunes, one by by the group Grace Notes (Maggie Boyle, Lynda Hardcastle, Helen Hockenhull – this is the same Helen Watson who did the Muckram Wakes recording) on the album “Anchored to the Time” (released October 22, 2001), and another by Sarah Underhill on the album “Strange Sweethearts” (released November 24, 2010). You can actually hear clicking bobbins in the Underhill version. The version given below is the Palmer transcription of the Derbyshire manuscript. Various artists have used some different wordings; please see the comments for a few examples.  Someone in the area should see if they can find the original to check the words.

Note the use of ‘u’ for ‘v’ in the text below. The ‘beaver’ mentioned in the last stanza I believe is a term for a bearded man. One LaceNews reader also suggests it might have something to do with a beaver hat, which makes sense since the previous line talks about wearing lace on the head (I think the term ‘head’ needs to be taken as a woman’s ‘headress’, which evolved into the cap/lappet set first seen in the later 17th century). Felted beaver fur hats were worn in Europe by both men and women from 1550 to 1850, and pelts were first imported from Scandinavia and Russia. Faced with the near extinction of the animal in these areas, America took up the demand. I think the word  is being used as a pun.

“Peg and Nan” is more difficult. I found a poem “Ballad of Injin Ink” by John Williamson Palmer (1825-1906) where a sailor’s tattoos are described:

Around his arms, all down his back,
Betwixt his shoulder-blades,
Are Peg and Nan and Patsy Ann,
And mer and other maids

So the reference might be to bawdy songs. In fact the whole poem is a fascinating and unparalleled comment on the character of the 17th century English lacemaker. I’ve never seen anything else like it.  And, very recently, some wonderful new information has come to light which I will write up in Part 2 of this post. Stay tuned.

THE BONELACE WEAUERS SONG
(Here is myrthe and melody)

I am a maid new com to towne,
but lounge I will not tarry.
I haue but two years for to stay,
and then I thinke to marry.
But if a briske younge man com in,
and that is no deceuer,
to corte him then I will begin,
Like a bone-lace weauer.

If that he be a gentellman,
and vowes he’ll loue me kindly,
then for him I’le doe what I can,
and striue to please him finely.
Of if he be a yoman good,
and to me no deceuer,
then I will striue to pleas his mood,
Like a bone-lace weauer.

We get our liuing with our handes,
hauing our wits about us.
We hope to purches hous & lands,
tho young men the doe flout us.
But let them all say what y can,
Wee’l trust no deceuer,
Wee’l sing you songs of peg and nan,
Like a bone-lace weauer.

We keepe out hands both whit and neat,
our pritty lace to handle.
We sing our sonits all compleat,
By daylight or a candell.
And when out Task we ended haue,
Our Mistris shews such fancy,
We sport ans sing, that all doth ring,
O Braue Bone-lace weauer.

And thus we leade most merry liues,
We heed no young mens saying.
We scorne for to be married wiues,
Wee’l keepe our fingers playing.
Wee’l weare braue laces on our heads,
We scorne as yeat a beauer,
Wee’l worke a pace, Braue flanders lace,
O braue Bone-lace weauer.
