http://tinyurl.com/3z7zvyc Antique Melville & Ziffer Mother of Pearl ox & Lace Fan
Size: 9.5″ long sticks, 18″ across
Starting price: 29.99 GBP
Auction ends: May 14, 2011 08:04:37 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller phoenixantiques-petworth, Petersfield, United Kingdom
Comments: Unusual to have information on both the maker (Melville & Ziffer) and retailer (J Duvelleroy) on a fan. There’s a Wikipedia article on fan maker Duvelleroy at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duvelleroy. They are still around today. M&Z were lace manufacturers with factories in France and Italy. What exactly the connection is with this rather plain Duchesse de Bruxelles lace is unclear.  Sticks have some condition issues, but lace appears to be intact.

Starting price: $145.00
Auction ends: May 14, 2011 12:06:21 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller klaraanna2006, Budapest, Hungary
Comments: Nice small bonnet veil of Brussels bobbinlace appliqued on machine net.  Note the work in all those little sprigs in the ground – a sign of a better piece. Needlelace fillings in the larger flowers and border areas. A very few tiny spots and breaks, nothing major. Flower petals have a slightly shrunken look, wonder if it was washed.

Relisted as #250823939041  Sold for $145.00, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/3wmjb3w STATUETTE dentellière DESVRES Géo Martel
Size: none given, but the one in my collection is 9-3/4″ tall. I don’t know if this is the same height.
Starting price: 1.00 EUR with reserve
Auction ends: May 15, 2011 01:18:03 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller aburtin, Cosnes et Romain, France
Comments: George Martel (d 1942)  had a factory  in Desvres, France, which operated from 1900-2003, in the later years under his son Jacques (at least I think he was his son).  A number of artists worked for Martel, and I don’t know how old this faience pottery (tin-glazed earthenware) lacemaker might be or who designed it.  Martel’s grandaughter, Rita Martel-Euzet has both a website http://geo-martel-desvres.pagesperso-orange.fr/ and several books out. You can find the lacemaker on her site, no doubt there is more detailed information in her books.
The glaze colors on this piece aren’t too inspiring – I’ve seen other examples with much bolder patterns. The work, while heavy, is quite good, with well detailed fingers and bobbins. The lacemaker is known for the delicate ribbons on her hat streaming down her back. And there’s that rather odd Le Puy-type pillow.

Offered by: Honiton: Ebay seller reet131, sidcup, Kent, United Kingdom
Brugge: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: I thought these two piece would make a nice comparison. They are both pieced bobbinlaces with bride grounds; one a Honiton from England, the other a Brugge from Belgium. The Honiton has the meandering design sometimes called ‘snails and slugs’ – and I think this one has been photographed from the wrong side. The Brugge is a little more organized design, nicely worked motifs with some interesting raised work. Both appear to be in very good condition. They are very typical examples in a kind of mid-quality range.

Comments: Very nice Irish crochet collar. Good tight motifs. Note the trefoil Clones knots in the ground, a sign of a better piece. Photos not close enough to say anything about possible raised work. Design is roughly, but not exactly symmetric. Condition appears very good, I can’t see any damage.

May 17, 2011 06:00:38 PDT
Offered by:  both by Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: We seem to be having a run on handmade lace tea cosies this week. The first example is made of linen, and might not be Maltese. Russian might be another option. I like the design – has an early French Empire feel. The second really is Maltese, and you sometimes see these odd shapes coming out of Malta/Gozo. It has a good design with interesting grounds.  Condition on both looks very good.
One respected collector I was talking with the other day notes that all the holes in the lace defeats the purpose of a cosy (thanks Nancy!). But I’m American and don’t do tea much, so what do I know?

This is finer than what one normally thinks of as Rosaline. Maybe a little too fine, the work seems a bit crowded. Maybe it’s the bride ground – it’s a little overpowering. In Rosaline the motifs have a larger say in the design. These small meandering Belgian pieced laces are in need of research.  Condition and workmanship are excellent.

Great piece of Mezzo Punto; Italian braided tape with needlelace fillings. Interesting bobbin-made engrelure – you see things like that in Milanese. The lower edge looks original. Hard to tell a date on pieces like this. Seller mentions the ‘cool’ threads – dealers make more of this as a sign of very early lace than I do. The texture of the lace has more to do with finishing than age – and there was a substantial amount of dry pressing that went into pieces like this.  Excellent design and work, and I can’t see any problems in condition.

Brussels applique on machine net fan leaf, attached to mother of pearl sticks. Some breakage in the sticks, but leaf appears ok, seller says it’s ‘a little grubby’. Has original tassel and box. It’s probably just the photo, but the MOP is a little bright, overpowers the lace a bit. Usually you see MOP with Duchesse leaves; this one is a little unusual.

Not the greatest design on this Duchesse set, but the fact that the collar and cuffs have survived together is unusual. And I like the very dense workmanship in the motifs.  The yellowing at the inner edge of the collar is due to the fact that a tape has been sewn in – there doesn’t seem to be any damage.

This is a good chance to talk a little about Lefkaritika ‘lace’ from Cyprus. This runner combines the Lefkara cutwork with Cypriot free reticella – an impressive presentation. The local name of cut-work in the Lefkara embroidery is “tayiadha”, derived from the Italian “punto-tagliato”. Good pieces like this don’t come up too often.
Legend has it that Leonardo da Vinci visited Lefkara in 1481 and bought a lace altercloth for the cathedral in Milan. Two small problems – even this kind of cutwork lace didn’t exist in 1481 (it was probably a ‘potamos’ embroidery), and there are no official records of any da Vinci visit to Cyprus at all. Nevertheless, Cyprus issued a set of postage stamps in 1981 honoring the 500th anniversary of visit and the lace, and a new stamp was issued in March of 2011:

After a big marketing push for their embroideries in the late 1890’s, Lefkara cutwork appears to have evolved in the 1920’s and 30’s  – the piece shown in the first stamp was made in the 1950’s. Lefkartika work was included in UNESCO’s representative List  of Intangible  Culture  Heritage of Humanity on September 30, 2009. See http://www.lefkara.org.cy/HandmadeLace/tabid/56/language/en-US/Default.aspx for a good discussion Lefkara embroideries.
Note also the reticella needlelace motifs in this piece – quite distinctive and little acknowledged today.

Nice length of Mechlin, hard to spot the date on this one. It has an 18th century flavor, but I’m thinking mid 19th c. The rather open design is a little too angular, and the fillings aren’t typically early. Can’t tell if thread is cotton or linen.

Comments: Very good long length of mid 19th century Mechlin.  I like the design, naturalistic flowers and leaves.  2 or 3 small holes, but overall very good condition.

$46.00, 2 bidders, reserve not met.

Offered by: Ebay seller twist-in-time, Philadelphia / DFW, United States
Comments: Large Duchesse fan with a point de gaze needlelace inserts (Duchesse de Bruxelles is one early manufacturer’s name for this kind of lace). Seems to have an interesting tulip design in the needlelace – the bobbinlace is standard Duchesse. Having a hard time seeing the whole design of the lace from the photos. Lace appears in good condition. Nicely carved fan sticks, one tiny broken piece.

Comments: Interesting klöppelstand, pillow, and 33 hooded bobbins.  Stand is well made, looks delicate, but seems pretty sturdy. No frills on this one, just hold the pillow and support the feet.  Seller says it dates from ~1930.
