Comments: Tina, The Little Lace-Maker of Brussels, first appeared in 1892 as a serialized publication in The Eagle Library  – Weekly publication devoted to good literature.  This periodical was published by Street & Smith, noted producers of women’s cheap fiction and dime novels. The author was Mrs. Georgie Sheldon (Sarah Elizabeth Forbush Downs, 1843-1926). The title subsequently morphed into ‘Tina, the Little Lacemaker’, and was printed in paperback and hardcover (with several different cover illustrations) around 1910. In 2004 the Colorado Rocky Mountain Lace Guild reprinted the book adding much background material.
So here is an item definitely for the specialist, a large collection of the hardcover Sheldon novels, including Tina. I count 52 titles, however I believe she only wrote 47. Some of the titles are a little messed up in the listing, so it may very well be a complete set.
I admire this collector!

The condition and overall presence of the Springett set is quite remarkable – an amazing set.

I’m also not too taken with the large areas of half stitch – a little bland in places. But overall this is a nice piece. A few condition issues, and seller says it is a bit ‘stiff’. Not sure what that means.

Comments: I should do more with Dresden pulled thread embroidery on this site, since it was such an important competitor to lace in the 18th century (Heather Toomer has a fairly recent book out on the subject). This apron is an unusually big piece, few condition issues in the cloth, but you can see how the pulled thread work mimics lace patterns.

Although I have to say that in original catalogs, pieces like this were always referred to simply as Point d’Aguille.  The names ‘rosepoint’ and ‘point de gaze’, etc., are more modern inventions. This one is a fairly standard design, with a few condition issues in the ground.

Comments: Lovely upright English bobbinwinder of light colored wood from the ongoing Springett sale. I’m not sure what the piece projecting off to the back at the top is. The design is not really the same as that shown in the accompanying Weldon’s magazine – although I’ve seen a few of both types for auction over the years. Often these pieces have a ring which acts as a clamp for the jaws of the bobbin holder – could be missing here. The English upright winders also often have the cup-shaped bobbin holder, like the flat windmill ones.
