http://tinyurl.com/4l8prql antique original hardback collection of georgie sheldon
Starting price: $1,000 with reserve
Auction ends: Feb 23, 2011 16:46:21 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller a_kee, midland, NC, United States
Comments: Tina, The Little Lace-Maker of Brussels, first appeared in 1892 as a serialized publication in The Eagle Library  – Weekly publication devoted to good literature.  This periodical was published by Street & Smith, noted producers of women’s cheap fiction and dime novels. The author was Mrs. Georgie Sheldon (Sarah Elizabeth Forbush Downs, 1843-1926). The title subsequently morphed into ‘Tina, the Little Lacemaker’, and was printed in paperback and hardcover (with several different cover illustrations) around 1910. In 2004 the Colorado Rocky Mountain Lace Guild reprinted the book adding much background material.
So here is an item definitely for the specialist, a large collection of the hardcover Sheldon novels, including Tina. I count 52 titles, however I believe she only wrote 47. Some of the titles are a little messed up in the listing, so it may very well be a complete set.
I admire this collector!

Comments: This piece is very similar to examples that Brian Lemin used in his piece on lacemaker’s lamps on Lace Fairy (http://lace.lacefairy.com/Lace/Gallery/LaceLamps.html).  Rare, yes, although a complete stand with 5 globes and central lamp was sold through Ebay in May 2006. The condition and overall presence of the Springett set is quite remarkable – an amazing set.

Sold for 1827.00 GBP, 5 bidders.

Offered by: Paivi Roberts, Ebay seller greatlace, Paris – Palm Beach, United States
Comments: Good wide (23″), long (8-3/4 yards) Chantilly flounce. I don’t find the design too inspiring, it almost looks like two separate flounce designs merged together in the interest of size. I’m also not too taken with the large areas of half stitch – a little bland in places. But overall this is a nice piece. A few condition issues, and seller says it is a bit ‘stiff’. Not sure what that means.

Sold for $650.00, 4 bidders.

Lace for Sale: Stella

Maria Niforos has just started a new web site for lace sales at http://www.stellaniforos.com/. The name is a tribute to her mother.
This does not replace her current site, http://www.marianiforos.com/index.html. That site will now specialize in larger pieces that need more complex presentation under the direction of her son Daniel.  Stella has a simple posting method that will let Maria put up photos of her stock as soon as they are taken – very useful when she is traveling.

I took a short tour of the new site. It is a bit of a work in progress, and one must be careful to investigate all the various categories.  Be sure to click on ‘Older Posts’ at the bottom of the first page. Both lace and various textiles are offered, although lace certainly predominates. Some are labeled with prices which seem quite reasonable (the prices are in dollars, but it would help to have a dollar sign in front of the amounts – foreign viewers will be left wondering what the currency should be). The rarer items have a ‘Price on Application’ label. It would also be convenient if there were a clickable email address on each page to help the customer ask questions without having to hunt for an address.

In contrast to the other site, all photos of a piece are put up sequentially on the same page. There is no second page that must be opened to get the details. There is a very lengthy ‘archive’ category, where you can look longingly at all the things you missed in your lace collecting career – quite a lengthy list. One thing I find difficult with Maria’s older site is that sold items remain in view constantly, and one must search diligently for things that are still for sale.  Here’s hoping that sold items can migrate to the archive page promptly. It is also a bit difficult on the older site to find the really old pieces – here the presentation is quite straightforward. Lots of wonderful Gros Point is the first thing you see.

I’m always impressed with Maria’s offerings, and here’s hoping Stella will help her bring things to the market quickly and efficiently.

Starting price: $15.00
Auction ends: Feb 15, 2011 17:48:45 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller londono, New York City, United States
Comments: This piece has condition issues – general wear and small holes. But it is 19th c Point d’Angleterre – meaning bobbinlace motifs with a point de gaze ground. The detail you can get in a lace like this can be extraordinary. This one is a basic example that starts to hint at that potential.

Sold for $152.50, 5 bidders.

Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London
Comments: Good Belgian Needlelace (point de gaze) handkerchief.  No raised work, minimal fillings, and the design is fairly bland.  But it’s a nice overall presentation. Few very small holes, but generally OK.

$227.50, reserve not met, 5 bidders.

Starting price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Feb 16, 2011 14:53:34 PST
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London
Comments: I should do more with Dresden pulled thread embroidery on this site, since it was such an important competitor to lace in the 18th century (Heather Toomer has a fairly recent book out on the subject). This apron is an unusually big piece, few condition issues in the cloth, but you can see how the pulled thread work mimics lace patterns.

Offered by: Ebay seller spikelobster, Scarsdale, NY, United States
Comments: English oak windmill bobbin winder, two of the pegs on the windmill seem to have survived. Wonderful, rich patina. The two bobbins look Downton, but I don’t know if that’s significant.

Sold for $93.59, 2 bidders.

Auction ends: Feb 19, 2011 09:14:10 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller pollytir, Southampton, Hampshire, United Kingdom
Comments: And yet another English oak windmill bobbin winder! They don’t come up that often, so to have two from different sellers within a few days is a good example of local statistical clustering in a random sample. As compared to the previous one, this has a solid wheel and a higher base with the drawer extending all the way across.

Sold for 26.00 GBP, 3 bidders.

Comments: I really try to give an objective opinion in these Ebay Alerts, and don’t like to gush (sellers do enough of that themselves). But this fan leaf is superb. Forget the shredded backing, the broken sticks, the two very tiny holes in the lace, the unglued fastening. This is 19th c Belgian Needlelace at its very best.

   Sold for $392.00, 10 bidders.

Comments: Excellent work on the Irish Crochet – I don’t really take to all those embroidered roses.  Seller points out one minor hole, overall looks in fine shape.

Offered by: Anne Swift, Ebay seller eastayton, London
Comments: Bertha of Burano needlelace, including a ribbon indicating it was made at the Burano Lace School. A familiar Burano-type pattern of large flowerheads and leaves. Nicely done, and in beautiful condition.

Offered by: Anne Swift, Ebay seller eastayton, London
Comments: This could be English or Flemish, whatever, it is a rare piece. I particularly like the end treatment at the lefthand side. This is another piece from the Jane Page collection, illustrated in Allhallows museum exhibition ‘450 Years of Lace’ held in 2002.

Starting price: $10.00
Auction ends: Feb 12, 2011 16:10:01 PST
Offered by: Anne Swift, Ebay seller eastayton, London
Comments: A really nice handkerchief of Branscombe mixed tape lace – meaning machine made tape with needlelace fillings. The quality of this lace can be quite high, and it doesn’t come on the market very often. This is an excellent example which looks to be in very good condition.

Sold for $330.25, 4 bidders.

Offered by: Anne Swift, Ebay seller eastayton, London
Comments: A good bobbinlace applique on machine net – it does have a Honiton feel about it. Accompanied by a postcard showing the same lace, although I can’t tell how old the postcard is.  Definitely a high quality product. I just wish it were longer.

Sold for $230.00, 5 bidders.

Auction ends: Feb 12, 2011 16:30:01 PST
Offered by: Anne Swift, Ebay seller eastayton, London
Comments: A great piece, and it does seem quite close in design to the reputed Queen Mary handkerchief (great for dating the lace). It is an unusual piece, I suppose Honiton, but with a quite sophisticated design. Condition looks very good.

$78.00, reserve not met, 5 bidders.

Starting price: $235.00
Auction ends: Feb 12, 2011 17:59:08 PST
Offered by: Paivi Robers, Ebay seller greatlace, Paris and Palm Beach
Comments: Bertha of Belgian Needlelace with raised roses – OK, Point de Gaze type. Although I have to say that in original catalogs, pieces like this were always referred to simply as Point d’Aguille.  The names ‘rosepoint’ and ‘point de gaze’, etc., are more modern inventions. This one is a fairly standard design, with a few condition issues in the ground.

Did not sell.

Starting price: .99 GBP
Auction ends: Feb 13, 2011 11:56:47 PST
Offered by: David & Christine Springett, Ebay seller springettbobbins, Rugby, Warwickshire, United Kingdom
Comments: Lovely upright English bobbinwinder of light colored wood from the ongoing Springett sale. I’m not sure what the piece projecting off to the back at the top is. The design is not really the same as that shown in the accompanying Weldon’s magazine – although I’ve seen a few of both types for auction over the years. Often these pieces have a ring which acts as a clamp for the jaws of the bobbin holder – could be missing here. The English upright winders also often have the cup-shaped bobbin holder, like the flat windmill ones.

Sold for 51.00 EUR, 5 bidders.

Lace of the Month: Reticella – February 2011

The lace for February is a Reticella border with Punto in Aria points, 55″ x 8-1/2″. The 15 large points alternate with 14 smaller ones, and there are three smaller points up the left side. Many such laces retain the original cloth from which the drawnwork was done along one edge – others like this one are cut away. The header is now a plaited bobbinlace.
It has a typical tripartite border with an upper and lower narrow section, the main design is in the center. It appears to be based on oak leaves and acorns, although it is a little hard to interpret.
This is an example of a heavy work, meant to edge some kind of linen. There is a large temptation to label pieces like altar cloth decorations, when it is more likely to have edged a table linen. This piece has numerous areas of raised work, large dots in the ‘leaves’, and raised bars in some crosspiece elements of the design. These raised elements were applied after the main work was done. Often in these laces there are figures worked into the design which can become quite fantastic. Reticella (aka reticello), basically meaning ‘cut cloth’, appears in many pattern books of the the later 16th century. It spread quickly throughout Europe and is popular even today. A piece like this is probably 17th century work.  Attribution is more difficult, with both Italy and Greece laying claim to the heavy, more figural borders with raised work. The issue of attribution is in serious need of research.
