Ebay Alerts! Ten items – April 3, 2016

http://tinyurl.com/hzdct4x C17th Bobbin Lace Flounce – North Italian – Milanese ? Antique Pillow Lace 3 mtr
Size: 3″ x 34″
Starting Price: £35.00
Auction ends: April 3, 2016, 4:38 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller supa_troopa, Redditch, Worcestershire, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of Milanese, with woven leaf ‘brides’. The ‘engrelure’ looks original to the piece.  The tapes are nicely decorated with a closely woven clothwork. The design itself is a little abstract with a symmetric, rather long repeat. It has the feel of an early piece, before the Milanese mesh grounds were developed. But hard to tell – this kind of lace has a very long history, and variations are present in many Eastern European countries.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 2nd half 17th c.
Condition:
Modifications: One end might be cut, the other could be original
Damage: A few loose threads, minor
Soilage: Seller cites ivory cream color.
Finish: Soft and a little worn.  Overall wrinkling.

231892309714   Sold for £87.00, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/hjdh5xm C17th EXQUISITE 3 PIECE ANTIQUE 19TH CENTURY HAND DONE NEEDLE LACE COLLAR & CUFFS TRIM
Size: collar: 19″ neckline, 2.25″ wide  cuffs: 7.75″ x 2.75″ max width.
Starting Price: $45.00
Auction ends: April 3, 2016, 4:38 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller trimchic, Thomaston, Maine, United States
Comments: A collar and cuffs of Point de Gaze. Raised petal roses.  The decorative ‘mode’ fillings are limited to single rings in the cuffs, more complex ones in the swagwork in the collar.  The design is conventional Point de Gaze, although not too ambitious. The collar and cuffs are contemporary, although there are some design differences.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Some of the mesh in the cuffs looks replaced.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Slight wrinkling, and it has the shrunken look you see in washed pieces.

401096051375   Sold for $45.00, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/hhu3r3s C17th EXQUISITE 3 PIECE ANTIQUE 19TH CENTURY HAND DONE NEEDLE LACE COLLAR & CUFFS TRIM
Size: 5.5″ diameter
Starting Price: $7.99
Auction ends: April 3, 2016, 10:04 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller trimchic, Thomaston, Maine, United States
Comments: This seller is listing several Armenian lace pieces.  The work is typical of the Armenian village of Vakifli in Turkey http://tinyurl.com/jqcnz8j.  I suspect many of the large Armenian needlelace doilies we see today come from that area.  To see an extreme example of Armenian lace, see the competition proposal at http://tinyurl.com/zn6ptow.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: Modern.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

351688960978   Sold for $33.00, 2 bidders.

Size: ~16.5″ x 250″
Starting Price: £0.99
Auction ends: April 3, 2016, 11:04 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller celestial20_0, United Kingdom
Comments: This piece is another section of the Crinoline flounce Brussels bobbin and needlelace applique on machine net, reviewed in the March 6, 2016 Ebay Alerts. I’ll defer to that description http://tinyurl.com/jmyd65b.  In that review I said I wished there were more of this lace. Here it is.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 3rd quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Vertical fold creases. Lace like this would have been wound around a large cardboard rectangle, much as you find with bolts of cloth in any modern fabric store.

351689000615   Sold for £877.00, 9 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/z66y66z ANTIQUE FINE DELICATE Handmade Duchesse LACE WEDDING Hanky/HANDKERCHEIF/14 x14.5
Size: ~14″ x 14.5″, slightly irregular.
Starting Price: $0.99
Auction ends: April 3, 2016, 6:16 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller echo.obrien, Rye, New York, United States
Comments: A Honiton handkerchief. Basic snails/slugs style, but with some very nicely done roses. Irregular picoted brides, and some varied tally ‘leadwork’ fillings. Good example of the type.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Seller cites occasional broken bride, with small holes in the center cloth.
Soilage: Seller cites faint uneven yellowing; creamy off-white overall color.
Finish: Faint horizontal and vertical fold creases.

191838088975   Sold for $22.50, 6 bidders.

Size: 23″ diameter.
Starting Price: $99.00
Auction ends: April 4, 2016, 10:43 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: A small Chantilly parasol cover. 8-part design repeat.  No ombré shading, and the design is a bit simple.  Looks unused.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: Wrinkled and folded especially along the edges.

331815880690   Sold for $103.50, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/z3nphhm ANTIQUE SWEET HAND POINT DE GAZE HANKIE WITH FINEST HANDKERCHIEF LINEN
Size: 13″ square
Starting Price: $99.00
Auction ends: April 4, 2016, 10:43 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: A Point de Gaze handkerchief with double raised petal roses. The roses on the outside edges are not raised. Note the diamond ‘windows’ in the petals, sign of a better manufacturer. I especially like the little teardrop projections outside the roses in the corners, and the cloth edge is carefully sculpted.  Not much in the way of decorative ‘mode’ fillings.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: The lace looks beige in color, contrasting with the white cloth.
Finish: Vertical and horizontal fold creases.

331815880840   Sold for $158.50, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/j9bt3e8 ANTIQUE 1860 HAND DONE FRENCH CHANTILLY SILK LACE GOSSAMER LONG WHAWL OR STOLE
Size: 15″ x 92″
Starting Price: $99.00
Auction ends: April 4, 2016, 10:44 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: A rectangular bobbinlace shawl, probably silk with halfstitch clothwork, honeycomb fillings, some point ground fillings. But mostly a ‘fond chant’ 6-pointed star ground.
Pieces like this are a definite puzzle. They are not typical of Chantilly, either in design or technique.  Kat stitch was used in Bucks lace, but normally not with halfstitch clothwork, and not in silk. I do have a large Spanish veil with this ground, although the clothwork is whole stitch.  I have a feeling that pieces like this are Spanish in origin, although I have no direct evidence.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or winkles.

Size: 4″ x 52″
Starting Price: $49.00
Auction ends: April 4, 2016, 1:08 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A Honiton guipure border. It has some hints of snails/slugs style, but the design is more advanced.   Picoted irregular brides, and extensive leadwork woven tallies.  There is a short repeat of two different designs.  Interesting piece.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Engrelure added at top and ends.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites ivory white color.
Finish: No obvious creases or winkles.

Size: 20″ x 273″
Starting Price: £300.00
Auction ends: April 4, 2016, 1:33 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller garden*hill, Reading, United Kingdom
Comments: A crinoline flounce of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. There are a few needle-made fillings, basically small rings and knots. Romantic floral design, with some circular esprits, but not in the upper part of the net. The little three-leaf motif is used as an ‘esprit’ lower down – unusual.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 3rd quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: One end has been finished with another piece of lace.  I can’t see the other end.
Damage: Occasional small hole and pinhole. One repair to the tulle that looks original, one overcast repair to the tulle.  The entire piece is not photographed.
Soilage: Some localized brown spotting..
Finish: A little wrinkled.

Ebay Alerts! Twenty-five items – March 20, 2016

http://tinyurl.com/hp838fy 34 ins antique/vintage late 18th century Mechlin bobbin lace
Size: 3″ x 34″
Starting Price: £12.00
Auction ends: March 20, 2016, 10:51 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of Mechlin with an undulating floral design that takes up most of the space. No esprits in the ground.  Note the use of small areas of half stitch – this is characteristic of later 19th c work.  Excellent technique with 6 pointed star fillings with a few woven tallies.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 2nd half 19th c, maybe more toward 1900.
Condition:
Modifications: Both ends cut, one secured.
Damage: Small holes and pinholes in the mesh. Some weaknesses in the foot edge along with occasional repair.
Soilage: Seller cites pale ivory color.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

231876476826   Sold for £53.00, 6 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/jud6uxb Antique/vintage sptted tulle Brussels lace scarf
Size: 7.5″ x 58″
Starting Price: £30.00
Auction ends: March 20, 2016, 10:55 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A narrow scarf of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. Interesting central motifs, I’m not sure what it is. I think I’ll agree with the seller, it looks like some kind of crest – and note the needle-made fillings. Which means this might be part of a trousseau.  This is a light piece with a very narrow lozenge border – wish I could see more detail on that, it might be a machine tape. Or not.  Small circular esprits throughout the ground.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Small holes and pinholes in the tulle, a few localized areas of edge separation.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Minor soft wrinkles/creasing.

231876262313   Sold for £35.00, 2 bidders.

Size: 1″ x 44″
Starting Price: $35.00
Auction ends: March 20, 2016, 6:12 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller greatlace, Palm Beach, Florida, United States
Comments: I think this is an Italian Pescocostanzo piece. There’s just a hint of the expected 6-pointed star plaiting in the irregular mesh. And there’s also a little half-stitch work, also expected.  Good enough for me to go with.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites some small storage stains.
Finish: Vertical fold creases.

222055162258   Sold for $159.50, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/hd87dkv 3 Yards! Surreal Antique Point de Gaze Brussels Lace Flounce Trim 14″deep Bridal
Size: 14″ x 108″
Starting Price: $195.00
Auction ends: March 20, 2016, 8:15 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller vintageblessings, Eagle, Idaho, United States
Comments: A crinoline flounce of Brussels bobbin and needlelace applique on machine net.  Needlelace is used for flowers in the main sprays and along the lower edge, and in the ribbon-like trail just above the lower edge. Good Romantic floral design, massed in the lower half of the piece. Circular dots used as esprits in the upper portion. This is a higher-end market piece.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 3rd quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Ends cut.  I wonder if anyone has ever noticed that I never say ‘engrelure added’ on pieces like this.  That’s because the engrelure is an integral part of application lace. In other laces it is usually added later.
Damage: Minor hole in the tulle, some localized weaknesses near the engrelure.
Soilage: Seller cites a light tan color.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles, but the hole piece has not been photographed so as you can really tell.

272170088644   Sold for $204.50, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/juuath6 Old Victorian Antique Hat Pin Bobbin Lace Old Store Stock 1890 Vintage Brussels
Size: Not given.  About 25 ” long if I’m reading the ruler correctly.
Starting Price: $6.99
Auction ends: March 21, 2016, 11:51 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller denverantiques, Denver, Colorado, United States
Comments: I think it’s a dress front – you’d have to put your head through the hole.  Or, it might be some kind of headdress. Ñanduti, without the palm leaf border. There are three large patterns in the Sol motifs and two in the smaller ones.  The very small motifs used around the edges are very open, giving the whole piece a light look.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: mid 20th c.  Seller says it came from “old store stock” but gives no details.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: It was wrapped in the accompanying cloth, so there are some creases.

391406746548   Sold for $42.00, 5 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/zoxk438 MAGNIFICENT HAND DONE EARLY ANTIQUE LACE FROM BLAIR CASTLE 760 CMS BY 14 CMS
Size: 5.5″ x 300″
Starting Price: $0.99
Auction ends: March 21, 2016, 11:51 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller celestial20_0, United Kingdom
Comments: A Reticella border edged with Genoese lace, originally the edge of some kind of rectangular linen. The reticella is a very typical cutwork with two narrow bands flanking a wider band. There are two different rosette designs.
The bobbinlace is Genoese, see examples in plates 194-197 in Ricci Old Italian Lace. Also the Rubens portrait in plate 121. The connection with the Reticella linen is a little odd, it looks sewn on, but there’s a curious stitch used on the foot edge, but I see the same thing in plates 195-197 of Ricci.
Provenance: Sold at the Lyon and Turnbull sale of the contents of Blair Castle.
Date: Probably early 17th c.  The very good condition does concern me a little – for something this old you would expect more wear.  And laces like this were extensively copied in the later 19th c. But all-in-all, it does have an early feel.
Condition:
Modifications: This has been cut away from a larger piece of linen. Corners in the Reticella are original, the bobbinlace is gathered around the corners to fit. Unsure if the cut ends fit together.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

351677967648   Sold for £506.00, 7 bidders.

Starting Price: $1,500.00 Buy-it-Now or Make Offer
Auction ends: March 21, 2016, 11:18 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller vikimako, Madrid, Spain
Comments: A fan of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net with a painted silk insert. Elaborately carved and gilded Mother of Pearl sticks. The insert looks original to the design. Quite a delicate design in the lace – some of the filling stitches look embroidered on the net.  Needlelace decorative ‘mode’ fillings have some gridwork, others are single rings and knots. Circular esprits n the tulle. Elegant, naturalistic design, delicately done.  A high-end market piece.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Expected fan creases.

Offered by: Ebay seller garden*hill, Reading, United Kingdom
Comments: A set of 4 doilies with Honiton edges. These consist of a single feathery leaf with woven tally fillings. There are other listings with similar patterns in different sizes (#191825988460, 12 doilies 9-7/8″ diameter and #191825990238, 12 doilies, 6.5″ diameter). Comments: A long border of Bruges Bloemwerk. Typical design of trefoil leaves and roses, with ‘islands’ in the irregular picoted brides.  Tightly woven, and the curved motif resembles Old Flanders a bit.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: ~1900
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut..
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Comments: A fan of Brussels Duchesse fan with blonde sticks and the original box. The silk tassel is also intact.  The Point de Gaze elements are raised petal roses with no PtdG mesh.  There are also some grid needle-made decorative ‘mode’ fillings. The design in the lace is quite dense, nicely made.  Some rolled raised work in the bobbinlace.
Provenance: Been in the seller’s family for at least 3 generations.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.  Sticks look OK. This has been well cared for.

Comments: A narrow very long border of Point de Gaze, no raised work. There is a 8-lobed ‘flower’ used as a decorative ‘mode’ filling in each repeat. The repeat is quite short with a simple design – this is a piece meant to be ruffled.
Provenance: None cited.

Comments: A mantilla of Ñanduti with the typical palm leaf border. Quite an elaborate piece with small areas of filling stitches connecting the motifs and at the two ends. The Sol motifs are of two sizes, with the smaller one having a 4-leaf flower.  There are also some woven wedge-shaped filling pieces along the outer edge.  An impressive piece.

Comments: These two Maltese scalloped collars are similar so I’ll put them together. The first is 3-part construction, Maltese crosses along the outside, Wheels alternating with leaves in the middle, and guipure crescents against the plaited leaf neckline.  The second also has a 3-part construction, Crosses alternating with flowers along the outer edge, lots of guipure surrounding Maltese crosses in the center, and a radiating wheat ear pattern next to the woven leaf neckline.  Along with the piece in the previous review, these form a nice set of excellent examples of the type.

Comments: An insertion of gold lace, with a fairly complex pattern of guipure work. Note the woven leaves in the ground and along the edge. The thread seems to be all metal-wrapped core; no flat strips.  Impressive work that make quite a brilliant display. Hard to tell where it was made since metallic laces were made in several places, notably Spain and France. They all have fairly similar constructions. My guess would be France. Wish there were more.

Comments: An elaborate Chantilly hat veil. The space is more fully used than usually found in these pieces. It is made in 4 horizontal strips.  The ‘urn’ design is a little unusual for a small piece like this.
Provenance:  None cited.
Date: later 19th c.

Provenance:  None cited.
Date: 1st quarter 19th c.  Actually I think it might be a little later because of the half-stitch used in the lower border flowers.

Starting Price: £14.00

Offered by: Ebay seller mystuff-fr, Mielan, France
Comments: A wide Chantilly flounce, 2nd Empire romantic floral design. There seems to be a little attempt at shading in some of the flowers, but not ‘ombré’ as it is usually seen. It has a good, strong design with small circular esprits in the upper ground. Hard to tell if it is French or Belgian, but the rather delicate work, especially the wide halfstitch trail at the bottom edge makes me suspect French.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut. Engrelure added.
Damage: Occasional minor pinhole.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse handkerchief with raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze rose insert. There’s no PtdG mesh around the roses. Lots of raised work against halfstitch ground in the bobbinlace scrollwork. and in some ‘finger-like’ motifs arranged as rays pointing outward. There is a funny bobbin-made filling stitch between these ‘fingers’ that I can’t really make out.Elaborate unconventional design with well sculpted inner edge.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Pinholes in the center cloth.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: To me it looks a bit shrunken, perhaps from a past wash.  A few irregular creases in the cloth.

Comments: You don’t see Maltese table linens very often. Perfectly round shapes like this exist but mostly as a part of a large triangular or square shawl. This one has several nicely done layers, with Maltese crosses at the center and around the edge. There’s a spoked ‘wheel motif made of woven leaves just inside the outer layer, then some nice guipure work, and an interesting ground pattern next to the innermost cross.
Provenance: None cited.

Condition:
Modifications: None.

Comments: A handkerchief with a deep border of Brussels applique on machine net. The floral design elements are small and delicately worked. I especially like the border of flowers around the outer edge; something you don’t often see in this lace.  There are some needle-made rings and knots used as decorative ‘mode’ fillings, and the ground has small circles used as esprits.

Comments: A long scalloped border of Irish Crochet. Square picoted mesh, the picots look like tight crocheted loops. Note the three-part ‘pinwheel’ design you see so much of in IC, here with largely 2 different motifs/pinwheel. Some good raised work in motif centers and along some edges. Good technique, tightly done.

Offered by: Ebay seller textile2012, Hydes, Maryland, United States
Comments: A Venise lace that looks like it was made in this form to go around some kind of linen. It is very difficult to attribute these later ‘gros point’ imitations. They could be Italian or Belgian or French or Irish, some was even made in England and very elaborate examples come from Austria. Someday I’ll write a book on the subject. I’m thinking this one is Italian.  Point Colbert is a very special lace with some specific characteristics – I’ll make my only example a “lace of the month” soon.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: The piece was removed from a sham – fragments of the cloth remain along the inner edge.
Damage: Some damage to the top edge in a section about 1.5″ long.
Soilage: Looks clean, but seller says it has not been cleaned.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller vintagecountryhome, Wales, United Kingdom
Comments: An Irish Crochet cap, and from the elaborate decoration, I think it’s a French piece. The raised knots are the biggest I’ve ever seen. They seem to be at the ends of leaf stalks, probably representing some kind of grain. They also run around the edge of the piece. Square picoted mesh, photos aren’t close enough to see how the picots are made.  It looks like the flower and tassels attached to one bow are a separate piece, and I wonder if a matching set is missing on the other side.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Looks like an assembled piece – you can see a seam going up the center. But it works well as a headpiece.
Damage: Seller cites a few breaks in the lace. Silk backing is fraying.
Soilage: Looks beige in the photos.
Finish: Nothing unexpected for a costume piece.

Comments: A Maltese bertha with an attached tag stating the origin, which is extremely unusual.  I did not know that Gibraltar dealt in this kind of lace, but why not? Berthas in Maltese are not too common, and this one is a good example. The 6-pointed star ground which is used extensively in the piece often  indicates a better quality manufacturer.
Provenance: Tag attached saying “Maltese lace bought in Gibralter 1908 by C.M.Hill”.
Date: ~1900
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: A few broken brides, some fraying along edges.
Soilage: One area of dark stains. Given the provenance, that actually doesn’t bother me much as a collector.

Very simple needle-made knot fillings, and note the equal balance between bobbin and needlelace in the motifs.

Comments: An alb with handmade bobbinlace flounce, machine made cuffs. The flounce is bobbin-made with a fond chant ground, quite a simple torchon-like pattern. There is a seam up  what is probably the back. I’m guessing it was made in strips and joined together, you can see a little evidence of that i the last photo.
The lace is likely Italian, the seller implies it was made by nuns, but without a provenance that’s hard to verify. Pieces like this do come on the market occasionally, mostly with machine lace.  A piece like this is more unusual.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: ~1900
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: A few broken meshes in the lace.
Soilage: A few small stains in the linen.
Finish: Nothing unexpected from an item of clothing.

Comments: Two large bobbin-made flounces of pieced lace that imitates the early designs of Brabant laces. The motifs resemble “Old Flanders”; I’m guessing this is a Belgian piece. The motifs are appliqued on a machine net. Two of the ends are not finished, so you can see how the motifs are applied and the tulle cut away to allow for the larger bobbin-made filling in the main trail.  It’s am ambitious undertaking, and I think the motif quality compare with earlier Brabant work.
Provenance: Seller states that one corner has the ‘original atelier seal’, but it is not shown.  I just heard from the seller who says the seal reads “déposé Paris” on one side and a B among 3 stars on the other.  Doesn’t sound familiar to me.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: I spoke to the seller, these were made as two separate pieces.
Damage: A few pulls and pinholes in the tulle.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: A rectangular shawl of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. Motifs are a little on the Bruges side, and seem to resemble the technique used in the flounce above. Romantic floral design with large flower sprays scattered throughout, giving it a very light appearance. Small circular esprits throughout the main ground.

Damage: Seller cites 2 recent tiny flaws in the tulle.

Comments: A Point de Gaze fan with carved and pierced Mother of Pearl sticks. No raised work in the lace. Decorative ‘mode’ fillings are confined largely to the edges of the lace. The central motif appears to be a basket of tools, the rest are florals.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious in the lace. The seller says one stick was repaired by overlaying it on another stick, which throws the alignment of the lace off a bit. Not sure that I understand how this is working.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Expected fan creases.

Comments: A whitework embroidered handkerchief with a 19th c Valenciennes border, both of high quality.  I occasional review whitework embroidery because of the inclusion of needlelace fillings – when I was studying in Alençon in 1980, I actually did some of this kind of work. Here the design and execution of the embroidery are exceptional, note the TC monogram with the crown. Having a crown is no guarantee that this was a Royal commission.  The lace, typical of the mid 19th c is also finely worked, and gathered around the corners as is typical of handkerchiefs like this.
Provenance: I can’t quite read the attached tag, but it does mention a “Marquess Smith?”
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.

Comments: An exceptional fan leaf of Ñanduti. Note the offset in the Sol motifs giving it an undulating appearance.  The work uses very fine thread and is of high design and technical quality.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 1st quarter 20th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean. There might be a little shadow at the right hand corner, but hard to tell from the photo.
Finish: Picots aren’t standing up as well as they could along the top edge, but that’s minor. Looks unused.

Comments: I wonder if this was meant to be part of a headdress. Or it could have been part of a towel now cut off at the top. There aren’t any closeups of that area, but I see a few loose threads and it does look cut.
A strip of linen, drawn and decorated with reticella around the main body, with a more Punto in Aria reticella variation at the top (hard to tell how far the original cloth structure extends as a support – in fact I think it actually might be a separate addition without a cutwork/drawnwork base).  There is plaited Venise bobbinlace around three edges.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: We have to be extraordinarily careful in dating pieces like this. Copies were extensive in the later 19th c. A tag labels this as XVII century Punto di Sienna, a name I’m not familiar with. Things arguing for an early date include the combination of both needle and bobbinlace, along with the general finish of the work.  Against is the extraordinary condition.
Condition:
Modifications: None?
Damage: A small hole in the cloth.
Soilage: Seller cites some light staining.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: The first lot has three early fragments. The first is Burato embroidered with what looks like yellow thread, perhaps silk. The man designs of deer and trees are made by leaving the leno weave cloth bare. The second piece is Punto Tirato Tela Sfilata (Sicily isn’t a bad guess), and the third piece is Burato with white embroidery. It is the same pattern as the second listing.
These fragment designs are quite sophisticated, and the technique excellent in all cases.  A lot of this material ‘appeared’ at the end of the 19th century, most out of Italy and we always have to be careful of dates. These were types of laces that are even being made today, mostly in Sardinia.
Provenance: The yellow piece, Bought by Mr. Nuttall? in Rome 1900. That name seems familiar but I can’t place it just now.
Date: I think all of these are early pieces, somewhere in the 17th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut from longer pieces.  The Punto Tirato is cut along one side, probably part of a much larger linen originally.
Damage: General wear and some fraying.  Occasional broken mesh thread.
Soilage: All show some small stains.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: A short length of Valenciennes with Partridge Eye ground. “Binche” of this period has a much more random design.  This piece has wonderful ‘line drawing’ effect using halfstitch for shading.  A very high end market piece,l in exceptional condition.  I wish there were more.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 1720-30

Modifications: Cut both ends, engrelure added. Looks like it has been mounted on black paper or cloth, which should be removed as soon as possible. I see at least one pin piercing the clothwork.

Comments: This is a little more what we think of as 17th c Binche, but without the snowflake ground, and a little too organized.  This example has a 5-hole ground. Well done technique with an elegant design.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 2nd quarter 18th c.

Modifications: Cut both ends, engrelure added on both long sides. One long side also looks cut, not sure about the other side. Probably not much, you can still follow the general design.
Damage: A little frayed, a few small holes in the mesh.
