The Wolds Lacemakers are a very friendly and extremely active group, including bobbin and needlelace, knitted, tatted or crochet lace. They are based at the southern end of the Yorkshire Wolds, in the area around Hull, with a membership of around 60.
The group formed back in 1985, and March 2010 saw their 25th Annual General Meeting! Founder Maureen Bromley states: “It only seems like 5 minutes since the Society was set up. We are now looking forward to our 30th year of Lacemaking!”
Meetings are held 4 times a year (January, March, May and November) at St Johns Church Hall, Kingston-upon-Hull. The AGM is at the March meeting. An Annual Lace Day is held in September in Cottingham Road Baptist Church Hall. Wolds demonstrators can frequently be found at various other events throughout East Yorkshire. The Italia Invita is basically a huge trade show in Parma, Italy. It was originally a specialized conference on embroidery and lace. It now has expanded to include patchwork, quilting, felting, knitting and crochet, weaving, straw work and other techniques. Thus there are a large number of exhibitors and many courses, workshops and ateliers. The only lace-related ones I could find are the ateliers:

First the good news:
Feesen is a relatively new organization with ambitious goals, and an online magazine. Here’s what I’ve been able to find out, although their website, http://www.feesen.es/# doesn’t seem to be working too well.

The plan is to hold both the:
– 1st International Competition of Spanish Lace, on the theme of “La Peineta”. A Peineta is the large hair comb women use with a mantilla.
– 1º Concurso Internacional de Jóvenes Diseñadores, focused on the design of lace for young fashion designers.

Now the bad news:
Everything has been cancelled due to economic considerations.

It seems that the lace events are free, not sure of the details.

This year’s competition is based on the theme of ‘Seto Lace for interior decoration’. Entries are due by April 30, 2015, 18:00. Winners will be announced on May 26th at 15:00.
The opening ceremony will include a ‘lace day’, I assume May 5th, starting at 15:00.

The Seto farm museum has a wonderful collection of local folk items, especially costume and textiles. I was able to find one explanation on the visitestonia website:
“The Seto Lace Days bring together handicraft enthusiasts from far and wide. Lacework techniques used in Seto handicrafts are showcased in workshops and exhibitions and visitors are taught how to implement them in contemporary handicraft. The culmination of the event each year is the judging of the competition entries. For visitors this is an excellent opportunity to try their own hand at the art and see the masters at work.”
