Comments: Nicely worked Burano collar, large motifs, fairly typical pattern. A very good example. I can spot only one break in the mesh – looks in very good condition.

Comments: Interesting 19th c Mechlin design. Since it has been made up into a collar it is difficult to see the condition. But the picoted edge looks good, that’s usually a sign that the rest of a piece is also good.

Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York
Comments: This piece migrated here from Maria’s regular web site, and it is of the consistently high quality that is typical of her site offerings. No fussy raised work, just an emphasis on beautifully done ground (with some variation), very fine net, and well executed jours. I think the rather bulbous ends would argue for later 19th century.

Comments: I’m going to suggest that this is not Honiton. It just doesn’t have the right feel. I think, given the quality of the motifs, and what looks like a light square plaited ground, that is belongs to the Val de Gand category (although it is hard to tell exactly how the mesh is made). It seems to be assembled from about 5 different standard motifs, which would be consistent with Val de Gand construction.

Comments: Some Malmesbury bobbins and a ‘quill’ holder to help wind thread. I’ve seen two other examples of these quills – they are really nice pieces of art. A major private collection of Malmesbury patterns and bobbins has recently been sold, and a book is in process. That should tempt you…
Laurie: good job on your current content. The piece called Brussels lappet is a needlelace. The seller mis-identified it. I don’t see any bobbin lace parts in that. But I don’t know what kind of needle lace it is. It doesn’t have the characteristics of point de gaze. My needlelace knowledge is still elementary.
I’m not much bothered by the labeling – Brussels Lace. Maria does know the difference between bobbin and needle – she sells some of the finest pieces you will ever find. This particular piece is still up on her web site, where it is called ‘Circa 1860’s, Superb Brussels Needlepoint Lappet’.
Belgian needlelace is immensely varied, and sticking to a generic ‘point de gaze’ description, which is really more a commercial term, is a little misleading. I consider the flat 19th century Belgian pieces some of the best ever made.
The one called 19thc Honiton lace–I think you are right that it is not Honiton. Instead I think it is what Europeans call “fine Bloomwork”. It is a type halfway between modern “Bruges Bloomwork” and Duchesse. The motifs are a little more coarse than standard Duchesse. There may be raised work (as in this piece) but not as much as the best Duchesse. There is more variety in the motifs than with modern Bruges Bloomwork. I have seen several pieces of this kind of work, which I think date from around 1900: not as old as the best Duchesse, but also not the greatly simplified form that we know as modern Bloomwork. I have several on my website.
