Comments: An Irish Crochet top with a small scale chevron design of Rose of Sharon and circles, larger motif at the front neckline. That overall design is repeated in the sleeves, with nice large motif cuff ends. Hard to guess the date on this one. With something designed for a victorian bustle closer to mid century I’d look for a more bell-shaped sleeve. So it might be a later piece.  Condition looks very good, I can’t spot any problems. Photos are rather white, may indicate wash/bleach, but I think it was photographed B/W so it’s hard to tell. Picture below is a back view.

Comments: An very good Brussels Duchesse dress front. Point de Gze rose with layered, pointed petals.  The bobbinlace motifs are interesting with good raised work – I especially like the pansies next to the needlelace rose, and the feather-like termination at the front point. A complex design, but quite interesting. Condition looks very good, maybe a rare bride needing reattachment.

Comments: This must have been a special order with that large monogram. It’s a duchesse, but also seems to have elements of Valenciennes de Gand, with the monogram and flower motifs against the square ground – definitely higher quality. Photos aren’t detailed enough to see how that ground was made. The fillings along the lower edge are also unusual. Other than having been cut almost in half, condition looks very good for the sections shown in the photos.  No obvious problems.

Comments: We normally think of wide borders of heavy, flat early needlelace (later 17thc, I think) like this as English, but no one has yet done a definitive study on the subject. It is sometimes possible to find dates and initials in the work – don’t know about this one. The design is rather abstract, branches and flowers. It seems to be intact. The edge at the lower border is unusual. condition on pieces like this is often quite good, and this is no exception.

Comments: Brussels application on machine net – a long piece of reasonable width. I think it is all bobbinlace, maybe a few small needlelace accents. Photos aren’t really close enough to tell. The condition of the net is a definite plus, although I do see a few tiny holes. Design is a bit haphazard.  It’s pretty wrinkled, but in overall good condition. What appears to be another piece of this same border is listed as item #220849525876. The photo is revered – not sure which of the two is photographed from the correct side.

Comments: Another Brussels Application piece from the same seller. This one has a lot going for it in the design, and note the dots in the upper ground. The bobbinlace is more detailed and denser. Again, only minor needlelace accents. Some small holes throughout basically in the net, also some staining. There’s a long repair to the net, although I’m not sure where it falls in the overall length.

Comments: Definitely needlelace, Punto in Aria type, when it was made I don’t know. Structurally it is quite sound. Note the woven tape used as a base – this is a typical Italian extension from a fully drawnwork linen Reticella base. It’s not a complex design, and the work is fairly heavy. It also isn’t a really typical early form. But it has an early feel – just a bit confusing. Condition is quite good although there is a little unraveling of the in some of the structural support.
