Comments: This piece says Le Puy guipure to me. The ground is a commonly used French variation. The simple flowers with gimp against a point ground background, the long woven leaves in a fern-like pattern, and the trails defining the design are also characteristic of Le Puy. The lower edge is a bit curious, normally Le Puy uses a simple loop with a single base, here you see picoted loops with a doubled base. At first this seems to resemble Beds, but remember that the French Cluny laces experimented extensively with edges like this. White Le Puy is also unusual, but not unknown. This piece, which I wish was longer, looks in very good condition.

Comments: A mantilla headcover of silk Maltese lace. Alternating Maltese crosses and rosettes along the edge, one large cross in the center. Some interesting guipure work in between forming large ovals filled with a kind of snowflake pattern. Interesting how the center part has been shaped to fit the form. This piece has a lot of presence – and aside from a few storage stains and minor loose spots is in very good condition.

Comments: These two listings represent two sections of the same Point de Gaze pattern. Good, wide, collectible lengths. Raised petal roses with what looks like double layers. Good ‘mode’ fillings both as grids and as single jewel-like highlights in oval cartouches. On the first piece seller cites a few tiny holes and a 1″ opening, I don’t know where. A few tiny holes are cited on the second piece. The same photographs have been used for both listings, and it seems that both are in very good condition.

Comments: A deep collar of black silk Le Puy Guipure. The design is a little with the long woven leaf brides, but it gives the piece a light appearance. It is a complex piece with several different designs on point ground and some complex grounds. The front edges seem a little frayed, but basically good condition.

Comments: A handkerchief of muslin applique on machine net. If it were Brussels I’d expect the edges of the motifs to be tamboured over, but they seem to be overcast. Which might point to Irish Carrickmacross, especially with the elaborate needlerun fillings. But there’s no sign of looped edge or straight picots that you find in Irish work. And the design doesn’t look very Irish. So I think I’ll go with Belgian on this. There are a number of tiny holls and pulls in the net, but that’s common in machine net. Overall good condition.

Comments: A lace design by Marian Powys for Anne Morrow Lindbergh, hence the biplanes against cloud design. The little crosses in the ground might be propellers. The Spirit of St. Louis was a monoplane, so the idea here is something else. Note that some of the planes have crosses on their wings, some have circles. I’m thinking this represents a WWI air battle between German and British bi-planes. This design was supposed to be a shawl, probably a bobbinlace applique on machine net. An actual Powys designed biplane net applique collar made for Lindbergh was sold at a recent Augusta Auction sale. The paper here is somewhat torn and separated, but basically intact.

Comments: Yes, it’s that Newtown.
An elaborate Chantilly fan leaf with amber colored sticks. Note the diamond scrollwork on the guard stick which might be a monogram. Great design of palm trees in the lace and the technique is quite fine. The sticks are in very good condition, but the backing fabric is quite shredded. One minor hole in the lace, but I’d rate it basically very good condition.

Comments: Prepare for an upcoming onslaught of great Chantilly shawls from this seller. More will be reviewed on Sunday. This one has quite a dense design. The halfstitch areas on this piece are so large that they are a little hard to keep even – you see this sometimes. There is one 4″ split in the racroc near the top edge, and seller cites a few 1″ to 3″ mends. A little fraying at edges with one break. Well photographed. On the low end of good condition, splits probably repairable – if you can find the proper thread and someone who knows racroc. I might have a suggestion.
