Comments: Colored silk embroidery on black machine net – this combination is always quite striking. The embroidery appears to be tambour chain stitch, used to give large areas of design some texture.  The piece is circular, meant to be folded in half to be worn. There are some small pinholes in the net, but basically in good condition.  Seller says this is Spanish, and similar pieces that come up on Ebay usually don’t have an attribution. But it does have a Spanish design flavor, and there’s no reason to rule it out.

Comments: A handkerchief with a deep pieced lace edge. Note I’m avoiding the word Honiton here a little, but not completely. The design elements aren’t really in the Honiton style, although they do have the righ tsize. There are some tally and bar fillings, consistent with Honiton, but there is also what looks like a point de gaze filling with ring decorations in the corners and midpoints. The rather round flowers also look more Belgian. I’m guessing this is a Bruges or even a Ghent piece. There are a couple broken brides, but basically good condition.

Comments: Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw. This is an ‘assembled’ collar, made up of a wider outer border and a narrow center insertion. The ends of the border are gathered around the insertion to fit the shape.  It is all of a fine Mechlin with circular esprits in the ground, and the border has a narrow edge of repeating leaves and buds. Seller cites two tiny holes, overall good condition.

If anyone can provide a little translation of this video, at least as far as where this lace is made, it would be great. I think this kind of lace is often mistaken for Le Puy. This particular piece looks in very good condition, seller cites one minor defect. There might be a little fraying elsewhere.

Comments: This is just a simple Italian tape lace, but I really like the look. It hearkens back to the l’Aquila tradition, and plays with the twists in the tape to create some shading. Comments: Wendy Lawton’s “Bobbin Lace” dollar in original box, but apparently without the proper chair. You might ask the seller if it is available. This is a high quality doll with a porcelain head and hands with a jointed wooden body. There are two dollars in Lawton’s Fabric of America series, the other is called “Zudie’s Coverlet” with a quilting theme. This example is #118 out of 350 made.  I once asked Wendy how she got her inspiration for this doll – she said she was very impressed by Lacis in California.

Pat Earnshaw.  I was hoping this might be a Belgian Rococo piece, but after close examination I’ll go with standard Cantu.  In breaking off to form a leaf or bud, Cantu bundles excess bobbins to the side of the tape, while Rococo adds new bobbins with no bundles.  This collar is a little unusual form for Cantu, and has a little fraying to the back neck edge. But basically good condition – probably could use a proper wash.

Comments: A wide rectangular Chantilly shawl. I’ve never seen anything quite like it before – a simple two-part edge, and the rest esprits covering the entire ground. The simple outer border goes around the whole piece, and there’s a looped ribbon above this on both long sides. It’s so unusual that I’ve asked for some closeups of the border just to verify the stitch structure. I can’t see any obvious condition problems from the photos – overall very good.

Comments: A high end market Chantilly shawl. As displayed, the spray of flowers at the back point seems to float in mid air. The technical handling of the shading within the flowers is an interesting study in how to effectively pull this off within fairly large motifs. The ‘framing’ around the lower edge ovals is an unusual feature in Chantilly, using the gimp to achieve a curvilinear line-drawing effect totally within the half stitch.  There is so much going on in this piece – I wish there were a photo of the whole thing so one could see how it all fits together – especially the rather asymmetric mass of naturalistic flowers above the ovals. This is not a typical Chantilly shawl design. A few minor pulls and pinholes, basically very good condition.

These large triangular shawls were meant to drape over the back of contemporary 2nd Empire hoop skirs and later bustle dresses.  This one has a border of large drooping oval laves and a large flower arrangement center back with swags of flowers along the upper border. Quite a typical design for a shawl like this. Excellent photos, you can clearly see the honeycomb stitch used throughout the piece. Seller cites minor pinholes and two small breaks, basically in very good condition.

Comments: A narrow rectangular scarf of what I think I’ll call Duchesse de Bruxelles. It is of an unusually sophisticated design. Note the bands of Point de Gaze running down the long sides of the piece, which are overlapped by various bobbinlace elements like the fern leaves at the ends. There is no raised work in the needlelace, and there are a few ‘mode’ fillings in some of the flowers. The bobbinlace is crisp and beautifully executed. Very good condition overall.

Comments: I’d put these lappets earlier than 1750, by a decade or so. We don’t really know what Binche at this time looked like, since it was a minor industry compared to Valenciennes. Therefore laces under the name Valenciennes tend to cover a fairly broad range – here they are using a fairly regular ‘partridge eye’  ground.  You also see this in contemporary Mechlin pieces. The image of the flower pot is unusual, and the overall design is not quite as sophisticated as often seen. Still it is an impressive and well executed. As a collector I am a little bothered by the chopped off upper ends, but not too much. There is some discoloration and staining, and the set could stand a wash by a trained conservator. But basically good condition.

Comments: Square ended lappets predate the round ended ones, and this small motif style is first documented around 1690. It is a deliberate attempt to copy in bobbinlace contemporary Point de France efforts.  This piece (on the left below) is a set of lappets joined with a cut down cap back – I have something very similar in my collection (on the right). The ground in my example is picoted, in the one on Ebay it is plain. The Ebay one also has more experimentation in fillings and woven leaf elements. I like the condition on this one very much – smaller pieces like this often survive in pretty bad shape.

Comments: A wide Burano needlelace border in a very collectible size. The pattern is a good interpretation of early Venetian needlelace motifs. Burano is made on a needlelace pillow, and the working method and thread gives the mesh a rather typical cloudy appearance. The cordonnet outline is also overcast onto the motif edges. This piece looks in very good condition, I don’t see any problems from the photos.

Comments: A French collector and I were discussion blondes the other day, and she notes that recent prices for good Normandy laces have recently increased due to the publicity they got at last year’s OIDFA meeting in Caen. Condition is always problematic with blondes, the very light mesh doesn’t survive well. So to find a piece in very good condition like this one is rare.  These laces were also made in Spain, and I think it is possible that this one has a Spanish origin. Basically because of the 6-pointed star fillings which is a Spanish characteristic. France more often preferred honeycomb stitch or nothing at all. It’s just a suggestion.

Comments: An ‘assembled’ mechlin lappet scarf probably made up in the 19th century from mid 18th c borders. Note how each side of the piece is actually a Mechlin border arranged to match the patterns down the center.  And the outer edge is a later picoted border addition.  You sometime see this done in Mechlin cap backs – whether it was an original 18th c practice or a 19th c ‘adaptation’ (fake?) is unknown. The actual border used here is quite fine in technique, but the condition is short of good with many holes. There is a wax seal attached to one end, probably as the seller notes, from some past collector.

Comments: Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw.  A Spanish Ret-fi blonde mantilla with a design sometimes referred to as ‘rococo’. Levey shows a similar object as plate 424 in “Lace: A History”, dating it to the late 19th c. This type always has three pieces – a rectangular section meant to go over the comb (peinata), a central oval or flattened triangular piece, and a deep border gathered around the edges. There are more of these out there than you might think and they are often mis-attributed as capes or shawls, or mistaken for machine pieces. Note the 6-pointed star filling that I was talking about in the blonde piece above.  This one looks very well done technically, and in very good condition.
