Comments: A Valenciennes lace, ~1740, with the cinq trou ground, and various snowball fillings. Valenciennes experimented with several grounds around this period before settling on the later 18th c plaited round mesh. The square mesh developed in the early 19th c. This one has a well done typical design for the period, and despite a few small age spots, looks in very good condition. One of my favorite laces.

Comments: I would put this lace in the ‘Pottenkant’ category, which was more indicative of a general design than a specific type of lace. They were made in the 19th and 20th centuries, primarily for the Dutch market, for use in caps. It is usually a heavier lace, and the ground is often the plaited 6-point star called variously ‘kat stitch’ or ‘fond chant’; it has several names. The way the light hits this piece makes me suspect it is linen. The design is quite interesting, not too formal, and has an earlier feel. For a fragment it looks in good condition; seller cites a few little age spots and old repairs. And there is some kind of strengthening to one motif. Just wish there were more, this lace doesn’t come up often at all.
Note also Ebay #271231985399, same seller, which has a similar feel, although much cut down and repaired.

Comments: A Mechlin border with a light design and straight edge, which might indicate an 19th c date a little earlier than 1850. Over the years I’ve had an opportunity to look at many of these under the microscope, and find that often the lace itself is made of cotton but the gimp is a thicker linen thread. This one looks in very good condition with an overall cream color; I can’t see any problems from the excellent photographs.
Sold for 21.00 GBP, 2 bidders.

Comments: The lace on this fan appears to be a Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net, although I’m unsure of the color of the tulle. Good naturalistic pattern, seller cites a few small holes in the net. I don’t know what the sticks are made of, but everything appears to be in good condition.

Comments: A reasonably wide flounce of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net. There are some good needlelace fillings especially on the lower edge. The motifs are small and well done, good light design with sprigs used as esprits in the upper ground. Only one quite small hole in the tulle that I can see, overall very good condition.

Comments: Seller sys this is from a “nun’s stock” implying a religious use. It is a continuous guipure piece, not a pieced lace like standard Brugge Bloemwerk. It’s possibly Belgian, but you see more like this with a French origin. It is one of those rather indeterminate guipures that are so hard to attribute. It is a wide piece with a rather sturdy design, not too detailed, with a regular square plaited, picoted mesh. The thread has the look of linen, but you really can’t tell from the photos. Looks in very good condition.

Starting Price: 15.00 EUR
Auction ends: Jul 10, 2013 12:36:23 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller chantaiziere, Centre, France
Comments: A narrow, long length of Valenciennes with the 19th century square mesh. The design is typical of Valenciennes meant for bed linens or nightclothes. Some of it looks a little loosely woven, but the design is more complex than usually seen. It appears a bit wrinkled, but no obvious damage from the photos. Looks in overall good condition.

Comments: A bertha of Burano needlelace. Well done typical large flowerhead motifs (which are probably pomegranates) with a few fillings. But most of the effect is in the decoration of the clothwork. The design covers the area quite well; no esprits as is typical in Burano. Seller notes that there is a piece of lace in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the same pattern. So I went looking, easy to do since the MET has their entire collection online. I found two borders http://tinyurl.com/kngevjl, and http://tinyurl.com/mf9hkp4, not exact copies but very close. The pomegranate, is an often-seen motif in Burano.
These berthas don’t come up too often. A few small holes in the mesh, and some yellowing overall, would benefit from a professional conservative wash. Basically very good condition.

Comments: A border of Point de Gaze, no raised work. Note the large rings in the lattice at the upper edge, and there are some interesting clothwork stitches in the leaves at the lower edge. It’s an interesting design, nicely worked. Seller cites age yellowing, occasional spots and some small breaks, but basically it appears in very good condition from the photos.

Comments: A lappet scarf or tie of Point de Gaze. An unusual shape with bulbous ends, probably later 19th c. No raised petals, and it has some excellent decorative ‘mode’ fillings – I especially like the heavy rings in the centers of the flowers. Interesting, there seems to be picots along the edge on one lappet, but not the other. A few age spots and you can see some tiny holes in the mesh. Basically good condition.

Comments: A bertha of Belgian pieced lace, with grounds of both picoted brides and square mesh. Things like this tended to come up at the end of the 19the century, going under the names Point de Milan and Point de Flandre. I can’t spot the exact attribution nhere, but it does appear to be entirely bobbinlace with much of the work based on a fine Duchesse. It does look a bit wrinkled, perhaps a sign of past washing. Overall good condition.

Comments: And another Burano piece, same seller as above, and basically the same pattern. So see comments on the first one reviewed above. Here the design of the ‘pomegranate’ fills the entire space. Age yellowing but otherwise in very good condition.
