Size: 2″ diameter
Starting Price: 92.00 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 19, 2014 1:29 PM MST
Offered by: Ebay seller kit-n-caboodle-4u, Hannibal, New York, United States
Comments: A “Palma” Teneriffe lace form.  Teneriffe is one of the Canary Islands, and Las Palmas is a large city of the nearby island of Gran Canaria. This might be the source of the name, but also note that you can hold this in the ‘palm’ of your hand. It was produced by Earl & Co., Lippincott Building, Philadelpha, patent pending 1904, made in 3 diameters, 1″, 1.5″ and 2″. Turning the metal side wires causes the center grooved wooden piece to move up and down. I think the base is made of bamboo. This is one of the most fascinating of the early 20th century American Sol lace looms, and it doesn’t come up very often.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None, but box top missing.  Boxes for these things that I own also have graphics printed on the sides and top, so I wonder if this is the original box.
Damage: Directions and box torn and worn – looks like box has some tape on it for repair. A few nicks in the wood.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: N/A.

Comments: A Honiton handkerchief with round center.  Snails/slugs style, note the thick woven elements used as brides.  Some nice leadwork tally fillings – two types that I can see.  Good tight work, although the design relies a bit to much on simple rounded forms, and is quite scattered.

Comments: This looks like it might have been part of a lappet, Brussels bobbinlace with droschel ground. Probably 3rd quarter 18th c.  Unfortunately there are no photos of the ends, so it’s hard to verify.  But the design that can be seen is typical of a lappet.  Quite fine work; I especially like the little buds in the trail.  Fairly thin, delicate design.

Damage: Small holes in the ground and some clothwork.

Comments: A Maltese lappet scarf.  Alternating flowers and modified Maltese crosses along the outer edge, Crosses and woven leaf diamonds on the inside. Much Maltese lace came into England through their naval port on the island, especially after WWII. I’m guessing this is a mid 20th c piece.
Provenance:  None cited.

Comments: Lappet scarf of Duchesse de Bruxelles; no raised work in the needlelace inserts.  Interesting floral design, naturalistic, and different from what is normally seen in this kind of lace. I especially like the treatment of the roses and leaves with the half stitch and also Point de Gaze shading.
Provenance:  None cited.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: Two Milanese border fragments, may have been used as cuffs at one point.  These have a very unusual feature – raised tallies along some of the tapes.  I have one piece like this, more elaborate (see the picture next to the two fragments), and I’ve seen a few borders in the Chicago Institute of Arts.  Very rarely elsewhere, and the ones I’ve seen have quite elaborate fillings.  The raised work is a direct reference to raised work in contemporary Gros Point.
Provenance:  Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw. These were illustrated in Pat’s “Bobbin and Needle Laces”, 1983, p. 150, fig 27.2.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut on the ends.
Damage: A little frayed.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of Milanese tape lace with roughly hexagonal plated mesh.  The tape has a constant width, with occasional scalloping around curves. Most of the sharp corners look a little puckered.  Typical mirror image design in a long repeat. The main central flower motif doesn’t terminate well along the foot edge, and the addition of the engrelure is a bit unusual. I wonder if it has been cut here. Picoted head edge is also a bit unusual, wonder if it’s a later addition.
Provenance:  Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw.
Condition:
Modifications: One join.  Cut on ends, engrelure added at top.
Damage: Some repairs to the brides
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish:  No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: This is a more typical Milanese border format, with integrated header and footer. Brides are kept to a minimum, used only to connect when needed to keep the work flat.  The tape is fairly even in width, and there are a few decorative fillings. Another mirror image design with a fairly long repeat. Looks like there are some woven leaves in places; a good sign for an early piece.
Provenance:  Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut one end, can’t see the other. Two joins.
Damage: Seller cites several repairs and areas of damage – difficult to spot from the given photos.

Comments: A long flounce of Chantilly, very typical width.  I hesitate to say French or Belgian – this does seem to have the more delicate, less intense black of French work. Hard to tell from the photos.  The design  is a well done short repeat of flower sprays with straight elements in the border.  Esprits in the upper ground.

Comments: A linen cover, quite a bold design. Note the gimp around the flowers – I’m thinking it’s Fench Cluny or maybe the Le Puy area.  This is one of those indeterminate guipures that really needs some research.

Comments: A Point de Gaze fan with a painted silk insert.  Something similar in Duchesse de Bruges, see #291227985920.  No raised work in the lace, which is quite light. I don’t know if the cutout was originally planned, or if this is an adaption. Other than that I don’t know much about this type of fan.
Provenance:  None cited
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Lace looks good, tears in the silk.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Expected fan creases
