Comments: A bertha of Honiton applique on machine net.  Snails/slugs style, with large sprigs used as esprits. The border flowers are a bit atypical, and there are no leadwork fillings. But the general style and technique of the motifs are typical of Honiton.

Size:
Starting Price: $350.00
Auction ends: Oct 26, 2014, 11:28 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller isleablue, Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania, United States
Comments: A high-end market triangular shawl of Brussels bobbin and needlelace application on machine net.  Extraordinary design and technique, one of the best I’ve ever seen on Ebay.  Note especially the extensive grids of decorative ‘mode’ fillings in needlelace.
Provenance:  Property of the seller’s grandmother (Fowler family) who brought the shawl with her from England to America probably in the 1940’s. She was born in 1897, however the shawl looks older than that.  Documentation is shown in the listing.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Some pinholes in the tulle, and in the Point de Gaze mesh. One small tear in the tulle along the border.  I think I can spot one well – done repair to the tulle.
Soilage: Some age stains and discolorations.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller atelier1900, Gaillard, France
Comments: A small mantilla of silk Blonde, probably French.  The Edge loops are reminiscent of Blonde de Caen.  This is a slightly unusual form for this type of lace.  Good design, and note the unusual leaves with whole stitch in the center of half stitch.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: A number of small holes and pinholes in the mesh.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Some light wrinkling.

Provenance:  From a local lace collection.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Comments: An Irish Crochet collar with tightly worked motifs.  Note the separated petals on the roses.  Square mesh, can’t see how the picots are made.  Not the most interesting design, nbut I really like the technique.

Comments: An Irish Crochet dress front with some interesting padded butterflies in the corners.  The individual motifs look a little lonesome, but the technique itself has that tight raised work often associated with France.  Square mesh with picots, can’t tell much more since there’s only one photo.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Hard to tell but I think there might be some slight brown staining.

Auction ends: Oct 27, 2014, 9:58 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller oldthreads, Franklinville, New York, United States
Comments: An Italian bobbinlace table cover, and I’ll agree with the Cantu attribution.  It is a tape lace with a constant width tape and occasional picot, but mostly smooth edges.  Interesting design of eagles or maybe phoenix and urns, might have some heraldic significance. Some nice clothwork and raised elements along the tail of the bird. Good whitework embroidery on the linen.
Provenance:  None cited.

Size: 7.3″ x 145″
Starting Price: 18.00 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 27, 2014, 11:14 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: Another bird design, this one an Eagle in mirror-symmetric Milanese tape lace. Beautifully drawn bird with something in it’s doubled headed beaks. Typical six-pointed star ground. Decorative holes and line-drawing in the tape, which is relatively constant width. Good fillings in the enclosed spaces. The bottom looks like a continuous lace narrow border, more like what is found in Pescocostanzo.  Although it does look like the band separating the two is integral to the piece, so I’m wondering if this is all intended to go together originally.  But maybe of a more central Italian origin.
Sometimes I’m thinking we need to identify laces more by ‘in the style of’ rather than try to pin down exact places of origin.  I’m going to followup on that idea – I have it in mind to start a website on very detailed lace identification.  There’s nearly 8,000 laces now in my database just from Ebay postings.
Provenance:  Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw. Illustrated in “Bobbin and Needle Laces”, 1983, p. 163, fig 54.2.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut one edge, can’t see the other.  Engrelure added at the top.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Mid cream color.
Finish: No obvious creases or winkles.

Starting Price: 9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 27, 2014, 11:18 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller pretty-things1, Notting Hill, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of Honiton applique on machine tulle. Snails/slugs style with turkey tail flowers on the outside, large buds used in a single row of ‘esprits. Narrow Honiton applique borders like this are rare. This piece would have benefited if the maker had cut the tulle away from the entire border flower, but this is a middle-market piece meant to be quickly executed.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends.
Damage: Seller cites 4 small holes, and a few loose threads.
Soilage: “pale antique white”
Finish: No obvious creases, a little wrinkled.

Provenance:  None cited.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse fan with blonde sticks.  There is one main Point de Gaze insert, rather hard to see they way it is photographed, but the roses look carefully sculpted – I don’t think the petals are raised.  The Duchesse is nicely done and tightly worked. It has an elaborate tassel – I think the ribbon is a separate addition.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos – hard to see the PtdG mesh.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse bertha.  No raised work in either the Point de Gaze or bobbinlace, and the Duchesse just has a gimp putting it more on the Bruges side.  Fairly simple motifs but quite a bold design.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:

Comments: A dress front of Bruges bloemwerk.  Typical motifs outlined with gimp, roughly square plaited picoted brides.  This is quite a different lace from Honiton, which has similar large motifs, but focusing more on flowers and leaves incorporating large spaces to fill with woven tally leadworks.
Provenance:  None cited.

Comments: A bertha of a pieced bobbinlace with hexagonal looped picoted brides.  I don’t think this is Milanese; it’s goo much of a pieced lace. It’s more like ‘old Flanders’, but a little more refined. I think it’s a Belgian piece, but frankly not exactly sure.  Beautiful technique, excellent design.
Provenance:  Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Comments: A border of a pseudo-tape lace, and I think it’s Flemish, hard to date.  Note the large areas of interesting fillings, the careful sculpting of motifs (which included raised edges). But most of all the ground looks like a droschel variation.  Quite an interesting piece.
Provenance:  Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends, tape added at the top.
Damage: Seller cites several small holes with some very fine repair. Also general wear.
Soilage: Seems to be a cream color.

Comments: See the matching length, #151452090849.  A moderately wide flounce of Point de Gaze, raised double petal roses. Good romantic design with some chains of decorative ‘mode’ fillings.  I like the treatment of the lower outer petals on the roses along the bottom of the flounce.

Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana,  United States
Comments: A Mechlin border, probably toward the end of the 1st quarter 19th century. Straight lower edge with rows of nicely done esprits above (11 rows). You sometimes find this combination in Lille laces.  The work is delicately done quite dense along the lower edge, looks like a repeat of a tulip with one leaf. This is a lace meant to b ruffled.  Note the woven tallies in the lower flowers – recalling some Lille techniques.
Provenance:  None cited.

Comments: A rather regimented tape lace which has the appearance of l’Aquila work but with a much thicker tape.  Note the little windows in the tape, these look like what you find in Mechlin clothwork, but I do think this is an Italian piece.  Interesting piece, wish there were more.

Provenance:  None cited.

Comments: A Flemish bobbinlace, probably late 17th c. It’s a bit too delicate to be an Italian piece. It has a typical wandering design with stylized flower-heads, holes in the petals. Picoted irregular plaited bride ground.  This kind of lace comes up more often than one might expect, but usually not so wide.
Provenance:  None cited.

Comments: A Honiton guipure handkerchief, snails/slugs style.  The design is a winding turkey tail around the border, with some leaves on the inner part. Good woven tally leadworks fill empty spaces in the motifs. The plaited brides look like they are trying to be hexagonal.  Note the inner border next to the cloth, this was probably a commercially handmade braid from Belgium.

Comments: A runner of figural Burano needlelace panels, Reticella borders and insertions, and whitework embroidery.  Quite a busy combination.  Reticella isn’t something you normally think of as being made by Burano workers, and it might have come from elsewhere. But the needlelace panels look like the typical Burano technique, but with brides rather than the normal ground.  Altogether nicely made.

Comments: I’m always glad to see something like this, the silk embroidered black machine net doesn’t come up very often and is always well done.  I think they were made in Spain.  I’ve never seen one with fringe before, or in such a large rectangular form. Probably a shawl.  The embroidery is well executed with a lot of thought given to stitch orientation for maximum effect.  This one has a little raised work in the leaves.

Comments: A Chantilly fan with Mother of Pearl sticks. Backed with white material. There are no closeups of the lace, but in general it looks good, and I’ll speculate that it is handmade.  Lovely romantic design; but a little jarring with the reflection off the MOP sticks.

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges small collar, tending toward Bloemwerk.  Lots of halfstitch next to whole stitch, giving it a light appearance.  Nicely done, and I think it’s a fairly recent product.
Provenance:  Comes with a card from Maison Antoine, saying the house was founded in 1884. Actually I’m not sure there is a tight connection between the card and the lace.

Comments: A single lappet of Alençon with attached remnant of the cap frill.  3rd quarter 18th c, a classic design that depends a lot on the elaborate fillings.  Unusual to see the mesh so intact in a piece like this.  Wish the other lappet was there.  Note also the band appears to be one piece with the main design.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Connecting band cut short.
Damage: Some repairs and pulls in the mesh.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: An elaborate Dresden pulled thread embroidery, developed to compete with contemporary more expensive bobbinlace.  An excellent example with elaborate fillings and good solid clothwork. Doesn’t get much better for this kind of work.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Small areas of fraying in the cloth and embroidery, minor.

Finish: One sharp fold crease up the center.

Starting Price: $10.00 with reserve

Comments: A rectangular Chantilly shawl. Wish there were some detailed closeups showing the stitch structure. Surprisingly these rectangular shawls are much more unusual than the big triangular ones. The light appearance of this example probably indicates French manufacture.  No sign of ombre shading.  Racroc lines are there but hard to spot.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: Fold creases evident.

Starting Price: $10.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Nov 1, 2014, 3:20 PM PDT

Comments: A white Chantilly lappet scarf.   We have recently seen a rectangular white Chantilly shawl labeled ‘made in Belgium’, so origin of things like this isn’t too clear. I can’t tell what kind of thread it is made of, but if silk, I’d go with France, if cotton, Belgium.  I own some of these, they tend to be much better than the photos, and the photos are usually great.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or folds.

Comments: Mechlin lappets joined at the tops. Excellent Louis XV design, note the well drawn flowers, quatrefoil and other fillings.  Unusual to have a pair of early Mechlin lappets of this quality and condition come up for sale.
Condition:
Modifications: None, but hard to tell if tops have been cut.
Damage: Some minor pulls in the ground.
