http://tinyurl.com/mnl7zsv Antique Honiton Lace Bertha Collar – Roses, Thistles and Shamrocks.
Size: Not given, but shown on UK size 6/8 Manniquin
Starting Price: 24.99 GBP
Auction ends: Feb 8, 2015, 6:01 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller supa_troopa, Redditch, Worcestershire, United Kingdom
Comments: A deep Honiton guipure collar.  The form is a bit unusual, but looks properly displayed in the listing. The style is a little snails/slugs, but starting to break out of that mode with well executed roses and pinnate leaves.  The design is a bit haphazard – typical English flower garden, or more properly, like the hedge row flowers found in the Devon area. Woven, picoted irregular brides, and good woven tally leaves in the leadworks.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None, although the ends don’t match. Not sure what is going on there.
Damage: A few loose attachments in the fillings, one small frayed area along the neckline.
Soilage: A few minor small brown spots.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Size: 40 cm x 98 cm
Starting Price: 9.00 GBP
Auction ends: Feb 8, 2015, 11:05 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller hedgehogpear, BN8, United Kingdom
Comments: A bonnet veil of Honiton applique on machine net.  No woven tally leadworks; that’s unusual.  Only two types of motifs, a flower with leaves used which fill the lower part of the veil, and some turkey-tail-like motifs around three edges.  Narrow edge along the top meant to thread a ribbon through. I once did that with a very narrow silk ribbon on a bonnet veil much like this – took me an hour, and that was skipping every other hole.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Some pinholes and small holes in the tulle.  Occasional frayed thread in the motifs.
Soilage: Looks clean – color might be a bit beige. Hard to tell from the photos.
Finish: A little wrinkled.

Feb 8, 2015, 11:20 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller hedgehogpear, BN8, United Kingdom
Comments: I’ll put these two together since they are rather similar.  Both are Honiton motifs needle-made ground (Honiton Point). Nicely organized design with some flowers that I haven’t seen before, and note the birds in the cuffs.. Not sure how the fillings are done, they might be needle-made single knots or maybe a single woven tally. Photos not close enough to tell. The loped band wraps around the pieces, a bit clumsy in finishing at the ends of the collar.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Vertical fold crease at the center, may be more, but softer.  Soft fold creases in the cuffs.

Size: neckline 36 cm.  54 cm x 38 cm laid flat.
Starting Price: 24.00 GBP
Auction ends: Feb 8, 2015, 11:35 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller hedgehogpear, BN8, United Kingdom
Comments: A dress front of Brussels Duchesse with raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze inserts with carefully sculpted petals. The roses themselves don’t have a ground, and the elements with ground are some simple tendrils.  Excellent decorative ‘mode’ fillings. Also some good raised work against half-stitch background in the bobbinlace. Interesting design, excellent technique, overall a higher end market piece.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos in either set. PtdG mesh looks good.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Just slightly shrunken appearance in some bobbinlace – might have been washed.  Minor.

Offered by: Ebay seller hedgehogpear, BN8, United Kingdom
Comments: A Point de Gaze collar, with raised petals in the roses. A few decorative ‘mode’ fillings, and note the grids of knots in some elements. The design is a bit conventional, but works quite well for this specific form.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Some small holes in the mesh.
Soilage: A few localized brown spots.

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges flounce.  Well designed and executed motifs, with heavy gimp edges. Good dense, romantic design, quite effective.

Starting Price: $10.00
Auction ends: Feb 9, 2015, 8:39 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller 3143tina, Athens, New York, United States
Comments: An Irish Crochet collar that looks French.  Note the large areas of heavy Clones knots (even some on top of motifs), and the narrow ribs with holes down the center, and the raised work.  All signs of French work.  The overall design is a bit thrown-together, unfortunately something you also sometimes see in French work.  Excellent technique, densely worked.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: The upper right edge looks modified or damaged, but I can’t tell exactly what happened.
Damage: Just the one end, and occasional stray thread.
Soilage: Seller cites slight yellowing around neckline.  A few isolated small brown spots.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Size: 5.5″ x 50″
Starting Price: $25.00
Auction ends: Feb 9, 2015, 11:04 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester, United Kingdom
Comments: A narrow tape lace of the type often associated with l’Aquila in the Abruzzi region of Italy, Ricci dates them back to the XVII century. But the technique is so simple and the design so effective that it formed the basis of many later laces. Hard to date this piece, but it seems to have a somewhat early feel. I very much like the irregular but symmetric design edged with flowers. I once  copied a piece of this from the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (yes, I do make bobbinlace).
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: I think both ends are cut.
Damage: Tiny bits of loose/frayed threads along edges, minor.  Occasional broken thread in the main pattern.
Soilage: I think it’s a cream color, hard to tell.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: Collar of Duchesse de Bruxelles – a little off the shape for a bertha, but could be used that way. Raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze inserts, and good raised work in the bobbinlace.  Crisp, clean design, excellent technique.
Provenance:  Ex. coll. Christian Maul Anderson (nee Jardin)
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Seller cites some breaks to the neckline.
Soilage: Seller cites occasional pale brown age mark, and soft old white color.
Finish: Piece has been laundered but seller gives no details on the process.

Comments: A Point de Gaze handkerchief surround, no raised work. Quite a light, airy design with only very simple single knot or ring fillings. Interesting almost architectural design.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Center cloth is cut away, cloth remnants remain.
Damage: Small holes and pinholes in the mesh.

Starting Price: $95.00
Auction ends: Feb 10, 2015, 11:15 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester, United Kingdom
Comments: The roughly hexagonal picoted mesh in this piece is a sign of Point de France, as is the symmetric ‘candelabra’ design. Late 17th c.  But I have some concerns, the more that I stare at this. I’m comparing it with plate 228 in Levey’s “Lace, A History”, and looking carefully at the two closeup photos in the listing. Some of the candelabra designs are not very symmetric.  And, I see some of the branches have twisted buttonhole edges on both sides, which is more an Irish technique for this kind of lace. Then again, parts of it look fine. I think there’s been some extensive work done on this piece – wish there were more closeups.  I might almost go so far to say that it looks like two pieces joined together down the length, and the top half (near the engrelure) looks better than the bottom half.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Addition 12 to 13″ long at one end. Cut both ends, engrelure added.
Damage: Some fraying and a few small repairs evident.
Soilage: Deep ivory color with localized brown stains.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.  Sellers cites a soft drape.

Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester, United Kingdom
Comments: A single early Valenciennes lappet with cinq trou ground.  Probably 2nd quarter 18th c. An extremely beautiful piece where the motifs up the center seem to float in air.  Excellent line-drawn clothwork with partridge-eye fillings. Each of the central motifs is different, indicating a higher quality.  One of the more remarkable early Val lappets that I’ve ever seen.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut at top. 2nd lappet missing.
Damage: Large hole at top. Smaller holes and pinholes in the mesh, esp. top and near the bottom end.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller amberfarleigh, Richmond, N. Yorkshire, United Kingdom
Comments: These lace ‘necklaces’ come up occasionally, usually in Duchesse, occasionally in Point de Gaze  (I show some other examples from my own collection below – the first is Point de Gaze, the two others are Duchesse de Bruges). They represent an opportunity for some free thinking by lace designers. The focus of the photo is off a bit making it hard to see details, but this is a Point de Gaze piece. The clothwork appears to be a little more dense than usual, but the basics are there – decorative ‘mode’ fillings, the raised petal roses, and the innovative use of independent rings of circles.  The lack of PtdG ground is also occasionally found, sometimes I call this ‘Point de Gaze guipure’.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean
Finish: A little wrinkled.

Auction ends: Feb 10, 2015, 1:22 PM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller amberfarleigh, Richmond, N. Yorkshire, United Kingdom
Comments: A flounce of Honiton guipure, quite wide for this type of lace.  Thistle and rose design with large grids of woven tally leadworks. Note the ‘islands’ in the ground, very unusual for this type of lace.  You see the large feathery leaves along the lower border occasionally in better pieces.  Design is still in the snails/slugs style with excellent work, especially in the rose motif.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut. Engrelure added.
Damage: Occasional broken bride.
Soilage: Light creamy color with small areas of storage discoloration.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: A bertha of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. There appears to be a gauze ribbon appliqued just below the neckline, all the way around.  The design is fairly simple, but well executed, and note the grids of needle-made rings in some fillings.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None, although the neck ribbon appears to be an addition.
Damage: Pinholes in the tulle.
Soilage: Age discoloration, I can see some areas of light brown stains.
Finish: Overall wrinkling, no sharp creases.

Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A border of bobbinlace (Brussels or Devon) with Droschel ground. 3rd quarter 18th century design.  English or Brussels? Hard to tell – the motifs are quite delicate which might argue for Belgium, however the variety of fillings might be English. I think that England and Belgium were true competitors in quality of work in the late 18th, early 19th centuries.
Provenance:  Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends, engrelure added.
Damage: Mesh looks in excellent shape. I think there might be one small hole near the engrelure.
Soilage: Ivory/ecru.  Isolated small brown spots.
Finish: Seller says it has been freshly washed, but gives no details on the process.

Offered by: Ebay seller palexpo, Steinhausen, Switzerland
Comments: A flounce of Honiton applique on machine net. Wish I knew something about the history of this piece, it is a major undertaking. The design is so sophisticated, and yet a rather curious combination of a sparse upper half and more elaborate lower edge.  The design seems more European in taste, although you can clearly see the English fillings – perhaps a Treadwin work.   I wonder if this is something that might have been inspired by  Queen Victoria’s wedding lace  (see the Devon Lace Teachers superb analysis http://tinyurl.com/ne25kj3).  It took about a decade for fashion to catch up with that innovative design.
The edging at the top is unusual, no straight line for attachment.  i can’t see the whole piece, but I wonder if it is actually a flounce, and not some kind of shawl.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell how they were treated.
Damage: Unclear if some lines in the tulle are repairs or just creases. Tulle itself looks in good shape.
Soilage: Cream color.
Finish: No obvious creases or winkles.

Comments: A collar of tambour embroidered machine net with needlerun fillings.  A few needle-made free fillings also. The tambour could indicate a Belgian origin.  Quite an elegant, partially asymmetric design with good contrast between the tightly worked solid and more delicate filled parts.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Some of the free needle-made fillings look a little off.  Occasional small pull in the tulle.
Soilage: Seller cites age darkening at neckline.

Comments: A Point de Gaze fan with Mother of Pearl (Abalone) sticks, guardsticks, and pierced bone? slips. Raised petals on the roses, and note the extensive grid-like fillings of several types.  Excellent asymmetric romantic floral design.  I wonder that it wasn’t given a more distinguished mount – MOP sticks are fairly common. But the overall effect is excellent.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Few detailed photos, but nothing obvious that I can see. Mesh looks in good shape.

Comments: I’ve had lots of wonderful conversations with this seller, who is an expert in Eastern European costume.  This metallic/colored lace is from the Krakovany/Pobedim/Podolie region of Slovakia, used as a collar for a traditional blouse.  Wonderfully bold presence for a rarely seen lace.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends.
Damage: Some fraying and breaks along both edges, more on the foot side. Rough cut and damage at both ends.
Soilage: Seller cites some discoloration from the metallic threads.

Offered by: Ebay seller slavart, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States
Comments: I’ve consulted with the seller on this particular piece. The presence of the C.R.B. tag (Commission for Relief in Belgium) dates this to the period 1914 to 1919.  Usually laces with this tag are Point de Paris, but occasionally you see a type with the 5-hole ground and sometimes a light gimp – I have another tagged piece in my collection like this, also with a slightly scalloped ground (shown below). For lack of anything better I just call it ‘Flanders’. Although the designs look more like what you expect in the Alps regions.  But I think the tag is pretty definitive.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut one end, can’t see the other.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seems a little yellowed in the photos, hard to tell true color.
Finish: No obvious creases or winkles.

Comments: An Irish Crochet collar that looks French in origin (see the other example reviewed above). Comments: Two pieces of a black silk guipure border, Le Puy style. But I’ve recently had some pieces from Spain that look very similar. So I’ll put this in my usual ‘undetermined guipure’ category, since things like this were made in France, Germany, Spain, and Russia.  Someone needs to write the definitive book on the subject.  I do see that it incorporates a ‘flower’ motifs like that found in Maltese, so that could also be a possibility.

Comments: A large Irish Crochet collar, I think it’s a fairly early piece from the type of ground treatment.  It also has some raised rings in the centers of small flowers.  I especially like the little oval motifs edged with small button-like flowers, wish there were more detail on those.  Nice rather geometric design.
