Comments: A rectangular shawl of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. The fillings are unusual, I think they are bobbin-made, but hard to tell. I am a bit confused by the design – hard to tell what the filling areas actually are. The tulle itself has the soft white appearance of English machine net. I wonder if this is an English piece.
Provenance: None cited.

Modifications: None.
Damage: Occasional pinhole in the tulle.

Comments: A Herren Alençon border, later 18th c.. The upper ground appears to have buttonhole stitches, although this is probably combined with a twisted cover. Alençon meshes are often combinations of bouclée and tortillée. Réseau fin in the lower border. Single picoted rings used as decorative ‘mode’ fillings along with an eyelet filling. The esprits are small sprigs.

Comments: An interesting figural Irish Crochet collar. Note the large Clones knots in the two butterfly motifs. and some of the roses. Rose of Sharon background with a square picoted mesh. I can’t see the picots up close, but they might be Clones knots.

Starting Price: 200.00 GBP
Auction ends: Sunday, July 26, 2015 12:25 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller garden*hill, Reading, United Kingdom
Comments: Looks to me like some of the closeups of this piece have been taken from the backside of the lace. Irish Youghal needlelace border with small, well-made motifs. There are few decorative fillings stitches, and note the interesting buttonholed rings on top of the loose buttonhole mesh fillings. The short design repeat relies a lot on the execution of the leaf motifs. Note the leaves winding around a bar along the lower border. Quite an interesting piece.
Provenance: Note saying “Someday for Rodney’s wife”, and that the lace had belonged to an Aunt.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends. I think the engrelure was added later – in Youghal it is often made as part of the lace.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Cream color, and it does look like linen. Can’t tell for certain without testing.
Finish: Some soft vertical fold creases.
Sold for 330.00 GBP, 4 bidders.

Comments: There is another piece of this mid 18th c Devon border, see Ebay #191634238103. Typical scrolling, almost tape-like motifs with minimal space for joins. There’s a little decoration in some tapes. This style of lace tends to be an acquired taste in comparison to contemporary Belgian products. But I find it has a freeform modern feel and is well made – perhaps not quite as tightly woven as other examples. Good example of the type.

Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
