Comments: A deep Irish Crochet collar. Heavy border, lighter Rose-of-Sharon design above. This design can be very effective. Good tight work with raised work in down leaf veins and flower centers. Picots look like crocheted loops.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: Later 19th C.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: One bride break near neckline.
Soilage: Seller cites overall light patina with light tanning in a few areas.
Finish: Might be some light fold creasing, hard to tell from photos.

Starting Price: 32.00 GBP
Auction ends: September 13, 2015 9:53 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller winterwonderlandfairy, london, United Kingdom
Comments: A deep Carrickmacross applique collar. Note the typical looped picots around the lower edge. Shamrock design with what looks like a little raised work in the center. Large areas of needlerun embroidery add to the weight of the lower edge. To good effect contrasted with the more open areas near the neckline – much like in the previous Irish Crochet collar.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: Later 19th C, could be a 20th c piece.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Slight wear on outer edges and corners.
Soilage: A few localized tan age spots.
Finish: Some soft creasing, minor.

Comments: A fan of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net with Mother of Pearl sticks. Good middle-market floral design, goes well with the pearl.
Provenance: None cited.

Comments: A rectangular shawl of black Catalonian Blonde, also known as ‘ret-fi’. The thin almost vermicular design stems from Moorish influences and is often seen in this lace. It is assembled from strips, which are quite obvious in the photos. Separate strips are also used as end finishes. Note also the rather 6-pointed star feel to the fillings, also very typical of Spanish work.
Provenance: Word on the street is that this piece is from Heather Toomer’s collection. So are several other laces that this seller is offering, however I don’t know which ones.
Date: Later 19th C.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Three small repairs.
Soilage: Nothing obvious from the photos but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: Two sets of Duchesse de Bruges cuffs. (Duchesse de Bruges has no Point de Gaze inserts, Duchesse de Bruxelles does). Standard middle-market design and technique in both. It’s unusual to find intact sets.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: Later 19th C.

Size: 36″ square
Starting Price: 15.00 GBP
Auction ends: September 13, 2015 11:23 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A Maltese square cover, probably for a table, but it could be used as a small shawl. This is a cotton example (although some of the thread sheen looks linen), and although some say that cotton Maltese is an English Beds copy, I find no evidence that this is true. The piece has abut ‘concentric’ layers, although the outer ones are square. Alternating crosses and flower in the outer edge, good guipure work comes next, then alternating flowers and circular filled areas. Good guipure work with leaf mat ovals edge the center, more circular design. Note the little flower and leaf design next to the center – that’s a bit unusual.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: Early 20th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: One small repair
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: A crease might be a fold sign, but is not duplicated elsewhere.

Comments: An embroidered machine net rectangular shawl – needlerun, I believe. There looks to be a heavier silky gimp outlining many of the motifs. Interesting well done florals massed on the ends – the center is undecorated. Light scalloped border continues around the entire piece.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: Later 19th C, could go into the 20th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Seller cites a few small breaks in the ground, larger on in the center.

Offered by: Ebay seller garden*hill, Reading, United Kingdom
Comments: A later 18th C Herren Alençon border attached to 19th c tulle and probably used as a jabot. Brides tortillée ground, although one can’t discount the possibility of a buttonhole stitch or two supporting the twists. Note the very limited use of picots, only on the outer edge, which puts this more in the Argentan category.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 18th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Ends of the lace cut, one join, engrelure added.
Damage: Small holes in the ground throughout.
Soilage: The lace is coming out rather yellow in the photos, makes me wonder if it was dyed.
Finish: Fold creases and overall wrinkling.

Comments: A late 18th C Valenciennes border with round hole mesh. This design in which small dots play an important role is almost in a class by itself. Sometimes you see it called Valenciennes d’Anglaise. And sometimes it uses square mesh, almost if this was the point where the transition to square mesh was being worked out.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 18th c.
Condition:
Modifications: “Ends cut, engrelure added. One join, maybe two.

Comments: A small cape of Point de Gaze, no raised work. Fairly heavy design along the edges with a lighter floral arrangement in the middle space. Few decorative ‘mode’ fillings, just an occasional raised ring and some lines of knots in the strapwork. Any larger piece of Point de Gaze like this is quite an undertaking. But here I think the design could have been thought out a little more.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th Quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Small holes in the mesh, especially at the upper back.
Soilage: Seller cites some areas of discoloration, appearing as small brown spots.

Comments: A border of Point de Gaze with raised petal roses. Nice contrast to the previous piece – this one had an advanced floral design, nicely sculpted roses (especially the raised petals), and judicious use of decorative ‘mode’ fillings, all well executed. A higher end market piece. I especially like the little swirls of rings just above the lower border. And note the triangular woven spaces in the modes along the lower scallops -nice bit of texture.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: One end cut, can’t see the other end. Engrelure added.

Comments: A short segment of a mid 18th c Mechlin border, Louis XV style. /quite a beautiful piece, and note the quatrafoil variations along the lower edge n the filings. Good precise work, tightly woven. The picoted border is a later addition, done in the 19th c to ‘improve’ an earlier lace.

Comments: A beds shawl collar with central triangular piece, a heavy border below and lighter border above. This specific pattern is not uncommon, I have one in my own collection. The design is of oak leaves and acorns, and you can see similar (but not exactly the same) things in the Bucks Cottage Workers Agency catalogs.

Comments: A Chantilly lappet scarf. It’s a little unusual, almost a guipure in the center sections. An extended ‘honeycomb’ stitch forms the brides. You see this occasionally, note the piece from my own collection to the right of the lappet scarf. This is an unusual piece, and excellent example of the type. I don’t know if it is French or Belgian, but I’m leaning toward France. For no particular reason.

Comments: A Point de Gaze handkerchief without raised work or elaborate decorative ‘mode’ fillings. So it depends solely on the clothwork design, and is quite successful. It has a slightly architectural look with naturalistic flowers. I like the straight edges next to the cloth, looks almost like hemstitching.
Provenance: None cited.

Condition:

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges collar with long front points. I like the crispness and execution of the design. Note the islands in the brides, typical of a Bruges product. Irregular picoted brides, and the simple tally fillings are bobbin-made. Excellent example.

Comments: A square shawl of combined Honiton applique and guipure, which is unusual. Snails/slugs style, well executed. The outer edge is guipure with a scattered ‘flower garden’ appearance. It looks like flowers from the garden are blowing into the applique portion – quite nice. Excellent woven leadwork tallies used as fillings, and note the turkey tail border tying everything together around the outer edge.
I think it’s a bit heavy for a wedding veil and was probably intended as a shawl that could be folded into a triangular shape.
Provenance: None cited.

Comments: A fan of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net, with a few simple needle-made fillings. It doesn’t help that this piece has been photographed on a light background – it brings out every defect in color. Not that it isn’t useful, but I’d like to see it on a dark ground. From what I can see the design is a little sparse with fairly naturalistic flowers meandering across the leaf. Some kind of white celluloid? used as sticks.
Provenance: None cited.
