Damage: Seller cites a few broken brides. Might be some separation along the lower edge.

Auction ends: January 10, 2016, 5:42 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller raggedyandrea, Honey Brook, Pennsylvania, United States
Comments: I’ll call this a collar of Bloemwerk although some motifs are a bit more complex, more like Duchesse. No raised work, just a thick thread gimp which is more typical of Bloemwerk. Thread seems a little thick, but nicely in keeping with the design.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: A few broken threads marked in the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.

Starting Price: 1,150.00 EUR Buy-it-Now or Make Offer
Auction ends: January 11, 2016, 3:24 AM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller adeledeluca, Roma, Italy
Comments: This is an interest set, probably an alb flounce and cuffs. At first glance one might think Teneriffe, however the seller calls it ” trina ad ago a punto Malta”, basically Maltese needlelace.  I’ve never heard that term and am not aware of Sol laces in Malta. I’d like to suggest that this is a Spanish piece.  There is a class of Catalonian drawnwork usually dated to the 17th c (see last photo for a piece in my own collection), which are considered some of the first Sol laces. The piece on Ebay is not a drawnwork, but it might have derived from this tradition.
I’ve been looking at the online collection of the Arenys de Mar Museo Marès del Encaje and can’t find anything definitive, although they have a number of the Catalonian drawnworks.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None – no seams.  Tape header added.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: I believe the seller says it has been washed to remove the yellowing. Not certain of the translation.
Finish: Vertical fold creases noticeable in the header cloth.

http://tinyurl.com/j6l7tkv 19TH C HAND MADE ROSALINE LACE CLOTH W EMBROIDERED LINEN CENTER
Size: 26″ diameter.
Starting Price: $9.00 with reserve
Auction ends: January 11, 2016, 12:02 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller jamiexmas*, Southbridge, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: A whitework embroidery tablecloth edged with a Belgian pieced lace often going under the name “Point de Flandre”.  It comes in both a large motif and a smaller motif form. The second form resembles Rosaline in design, but with slightly larger motifs, and no raised work. This and Rosaline are certainly related.  Note also the ‘islands’ in the irregular picoted brides, which might speak to a Bruges origin.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: late 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Diagonal fold creases.

Starting Price: $29.00
Auction ends: January 11, 2016, 12:02 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller jamiexmas*, Southbridge, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: A deep collar of “Point de Flandre”, of the larger motif type (see previous review). This is a pieced lace, and again note the ‘islands’ in the brides, which might indicate a Bruges origin. Sometimes this lace is called “Old Flanders”. The elaborate fillings also bear a similarity to some Milanese work.  The design is symmetric with a single motif at the back.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: late 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: The neckpiece might be a separate addition.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or winkles.

Auction ends: January 11, 2016, 12:06 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller jamiexmas*, Southbridge, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: A handkerchief of Duchesse de Bruxelles, no raised work in the Point de Gaze inserts. Motifs are conventional, a little on the Bloemwerk side, but the use of circular curves in the overall design is impressive. Even to the circular flower in the PtdG.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: ~1900
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites minor age color.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Size: 14″ square
Starting Price: $9.00 with reserve.
Auction ends: January 11, 2016, 12:11 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller jamiexmas*, Southbridge, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: A Point de Gaze handkerchief with figural work – a basket of flowers in each corner. Raised petal roses with diamond pattern holes in the raised and other flower petals. The decorative ‘mode’ fillings are subtle – with the exception of the flower at the bottom of the baskets. Complex romantic floral design, a little crowded.  This is a high-end market piece.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: ~1900
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Starting Price: £15.00
Auction ends: January 11, 2016, 12:11 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller garden*hill, Reading, United Kingdom
Comments: A Bruges Bloemwerk bertha collar with a short repeat.  Note the ‘islands’ joining the picoted brides, and this is occasionally also used as a filling.  Conventional motifs. Berthas in Bloemwerk are unusual.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: ~1900.
Condition:
Modifications: Seller cites two joins, but I’m having trouble finding them.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks a little yellow in the photo, but this may not be true color.
Finish: Vertical fold creases.

http://tinyurl.com/jt2y4zs Massive Hand Made 19th  Century Brussels Lace Veil or Shawl~Dentelle De Bruxelles
Size: 96″ x 72″
Starting Price: £10.00
Auction ends: January 11, 2016, 12:18 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller happy-fella, East Sussex, United Kingdom
Comments: A veil of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net.  It looks oval in shape, probably a wedding veil. The design goes in a thin border around the outer edge, with a larger flower spray at one end. Needle-made fillings or rings, sometimes in grid pattern.  Numerous esprits in the entire ground, small sprigs nearer the ends, which is a sign of a better piece. But the sparse, fairly simple design gives it a very light look overall.
Provenance: Local estate in Brighton, previous owner was a costume designer.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos. Tulle appears to be intact, but not a lot of closeups for such a large piece.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Auction ends: January 11, 2016, 12:46 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller garden*hill, Reading, United Kingdom
Comments: Three pieces of a border of Honiton applique on machine net. Snails/slugs style with carefully executed flowers. Woven tally fillings in several patterns nicely done. Small sprigs and circles are used as esprits.  Honiton applique borders in this style rarely do so much esprit work.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut ends, finished in the longer piece.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites a little age marking in some motifs.
Finish: Random creasing.

Comments: A set of Rosaline perlé collar and 2 cuffs. Photos aren’t close enough to tell if the perls are needle or bobbin-made.  Good typical design, nicely made.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 3rd quarter 19th c.

Starting Price: $9.00 with reserve.
Auction ends: January 11, 2016, 1:05 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller jamiexmas*, Southbridge, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: Matching collar and cuffs of Point d’Angleterre.  This is bobbinlace motifs with a Point de Gaze ground, a later 19th c development. It can be very impressive with elaborate decorative needle-made fillings. This set has some unusual diamond esprit patterns in the ground – hard to do in Point de Gaze. Good symmetric design with quite small motifs.
Provenance: Acquired from a museum collection.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.  Sewn onto blue paper.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: All pieces look clean.
Finish: Some fold creases aligned with the blue paper.

Starting Price: £25.00
Auction ends: January 11, 2016, 1:15 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller garden*hill, Reading, United Kingdom
Comments: A Honiton Point set of collar and matching cuffs. The ‘point’ means it has a needlelace ground. Snail/slugs style – the single flower at the tip of the back collar doesn’t really match other motifs.  Otherwise things are nicely executed with small woven tally leadwork fillings.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites some light staining at the back of the collar.
Finish: Vertical fold creases in the collar.

Starting Price: $595.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: January 11, 2016, 2:15 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A table cover  of bands of cutwork, burato, and plaited bobbinlace.  The overall condition, and the ornaments on the edges of the bobbinlace mark this as a later piece. I don’t think it’s Ameila Ars, since they specialize in needlelace, but I wouldn’t completely rule it out. It’s probably a Northern Italian product.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: ~1900.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Horizontal and vertical fold creases.

Auction ends: January 11, 2016, 5:33 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller jamiexmas*, Southbridge, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: A small, roughly triangular shawl of Chantilly with shaping around the neck and front.  Amost a deep collar. The light grayish tone to the black silk thread is indicative of finer thread, probably a French piece. 2nd Empire romantic floral design, no ombré shading.
Provenance: Acquired from a private museum collection.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles, but this is also difficult to tell from the photos.

Auction ends: January 11, 2016, 5:36 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller jamiexmas*, Southbridge, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: A long lappet scarf of Chantilly – an unusual form with the widened ends. I’ve sen things like this but only in combination with a shawl collar or headpiece, not as a standalone scarf. Romantic floral design, and again, the fineness of the thread might indicate French manufacture.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: These black embroidered nets come up occasionally, and can be spectacular when done with colored silks. Here the silver thread needlerun design on black net is quite impressive. I believe they are Spanish in origin, but not certain.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: Early 20th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Seller cites six tiny repairs.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles, but there are a few fold lines as it hangs down that aren’t entirely clear.

Comments: A rectangular Chantilly shawl, note the fine esprits in the ground. Floral and leaf design along all borders, and the fine thread may again indicate French manufacture.  No ombré shading.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: One separation in an edge flower at one end.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.

Auction ends: January 12, 2016, 5:36 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller textiles2012, Hydes, Maryland, United States
Comments: A fan leaf of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net.  The spray of flowers partially across the piece has an Art Nouveau feel. The motifs are a bit large, and the edging rather conventional. But I like the overall effect, especially combined with the esprits. A few needlemade ring and knot fillings.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: ~1900
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: One small hole in the tulle at one end.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Starting Price: $35.00
Auction ends: January 12, 2016, 6:00 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller textiles2012, Hydes, Maryland, United States
Comments: A panel of what I’ll call ‘pottenkant’ lace, probably a Dutch product. WEll defined flower pots filled with flowers. This is an assembled piece with a narrow border on top, and a much smaller torchon-like edging all the way around. Fond chant ground, which is not unusual in pottenkant lace.  This is more a style than an absolute technique – you see this theme carried out in several types of laces.  Note the interesting fillings, and both half and whole stitch in the motifs.  The gimp has a Mechlin flavor.
I always have a copy of Emil Hannover’s Tønderske Kniplinger book at hand. He documents many different variations continuous laces, and this two-part construction is especially evident in Lille laces.  Probably because they were meant to fit on headwear.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Assembled
Damage: A few small holes throughout.
Soilage: Looks clean, maybe a little yellow.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Starting Price: $99.00
Auction ends: January 12, 2016, 6:00 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller textiles2012, Hydes, Maryland, United States
Comments: A lined box with three laces.  I’ll pass on the description of the box, since I’m not sure of its original purpose. There is one short piece of conventional Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net, one piece of later 18th c Herren Alençon with what might be brides bouclée, and an interesting Valenciennes with partridge eye ground, around 1740. This  last piece is of most interest, both for condition and the dense slightly geometric design.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: Alençon 4th quarter 18th c, Brussels applique 2nd half 19th c, Valenciennes ~1740.
Condition:
Modifications: One end looks cut on the application and Alençon, can’t see the rest. One join in the Valenciennes.
Damage: Alençon ground is rather frayed.  Not many photos of the lace.
Soilage: Val looks clean, others are a little yellowed.
Finish: Vertical fold creases in the Alençon.

Comments: A collar of Honiton applique on machine net. Snails/slugs style, conventional design. There’s some shaping in the front pieces on the inside, partially attached with an engrelure.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Small holes and a little fraying to the tulle in places. Signs of repair.
Soilage: Localized brown staining.

Size: 12″ neckline, ~3″ deep.
Starting Price: $52.00
Auction ends: January 14, 2016, 1:40 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A collar of Point de Gaze, of a type I like to call Point de Gaze Guipure, since it doesn’t have the regular ground.  It does have a bride ground, which looks like bundles of threads loosely buttonholed, which go over into the cordonnet around the motifs.  This type of needlelace comes up on Ebay occasionally, I have several pieces in my collection.  Note the widely space looped picots on the edge of this piece, you see that on regular Point de Gaze but not often.  A good example of the type – quality can vary considerably.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None. Engrelure added along neckline.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites ivory/ecru color.
Finish: Not quite crisp, perhaps from a past washing.

Comments: A fairly wide border of Point de Gaze, no raised work. Interesting dense design with esprits and some grids of decorative ‘mode’ fillings.  It’s a naturalistic design, but not the extreme naturalism of early pieces.  Slightly naive.  Condition is problematic.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: Later 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: One end cut, can’t see the other end. Engrelure added.
Damage: Numerous holes, some quite large. Some attempt at repair by replacing missing mesh with tulle.
Soilage: A few small brown spots.
Finish: Some wrinkling along the engrelure.

Comments: A jabot with a Point d’Angleterre lace end. It might be a cuff, but fits very nicely on the linen.  Interesting, see the cuff/collar set reviewed above. The same diamond pattern is seen in the ground, although not made the same way (and the general design is different).  In this piece there are extensive ‘mode’ fillings, and note the raised rings in the centers of the small flowers.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: Later 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Occasional pinhole in the mesh.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creasing or wrinkles.
