Comments: A Dress front of Honiton applique on machine net. Unusual piece – the motifs are very large and rather random in organization. Good execution in the motifs – but it doesn’t seem to come together too well. Two motifs are birds. Large florals around the edge with woven tally leadwork fillings.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:

Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Fold creases and a little other soft creasing.

Comments: A bertha of Cantu bobbinlace. Typical swirling pattern with three and five headed flowers. Personal items like this are a little unusual in Cantu, you see much more in table and bed linens.

Offered by: Ebay seller winterwonderlandfairy, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A long, reasonably wide length of black silk guipure. It might be Le Puy; it has one of their ground variations, and the ,motifs placed against point ground are typical of this lace. But he twisted weaving sections, and the long thin tallies are found elsewhere, like in Spain. The overall design is also not quite as refined as most Le Puy designs are. Interesting piece.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: Fourth quarter 20th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.
Damage: A few pulls in the ground.
Soilage: Looks clean, hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: A little wrinkled. Black silk guipures stand up quite well over time.

Auction ends: May 5, 2016, 12:40 PM PDT.
Offered by: Ebay seller vanye90, United Kingdom
Comments: A Mechlin handkerchief with an elaborate Bucks Cottage Workers Agency box. Harry Armstrong founded this organization in 1906, and it lasted until he died in 1943. He always operated under the name of Mrs. Armstrong, although he never married. There is an excellent article about the agency at http://tinyurl.com/z34rvjt. The box is wonderfully collectible all by itself.
Difficult to say if this piece was made in England. Armstrong did import Cluny lace from Belgium, and probably crochet from Ireland. I can’t find any record of agency lacemakers making Mechlin. This piece has an interesting figural design, a little blocky, as is often found in Mechlin.
Provenance: Bucks Cottage Workers Agency box. We can only assume the lace goes with the box.
Date: 1st half 20th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean, hard to tell with the brown background.
Finish: Horizontal and vertical fold creases. Looks like it fits folded up in the box with plenty of room to spare.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A Mechlin border with 5-hole ground. The design is Louis XV, however it really has a more 19th century feel. There’s a general looseness of the weave, and the picot edge is more separated from the design than you find in earlier pieces. And the condition is extremely good; not typical of an early piece. Good undulating design with snowflake fillings.
Provenance: From the auction http://tinyurl.com/zbs95qs.
Date: later 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut one end, the other end might be the cut finish of the piece.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Comments: A small Honiton collar. PRetty much out of the snails/slugs style, but still with the scattered ‘English flower garden’ or ‘Devon hedgerow’ look. The motif elements are quite small with novel arrangements of woven tally leadworks. Un-picoted irregular brides. Interesting piece.

Comments: A small triangular shawl of Duchesse de Bruges. Excellent floral design – the feathery leaves remind me of some types of Honiton. No raised work, but there are designs in a halfstitch ground that provide nice relief to some of the flowers and trefoil leaves.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.

Comments: A deep collar of Irish Crochet. Interesting design – usually pieces like this have the larger motifs on the outside. Here everything is reversed. Note the Clones knot picots, and the interesting groups of raised dots in the centers of the larger flowers. The motifs are tightly worked. The outside has a floral pattern I’ve never seen before, all in a kind of ‘knotted guipure’ early type of IC. Interesting and impressive piece.

Comments: A round piece of Sol lace. I haven’t seen this form before. It might be a modern Nanduti piece. If you look closely the threads have a sheen and loose twist, probably modern thread. Good design with only 3 motifs.

Starting Price: $267.99
Auction ends: May 7, 2016, 8:03 PM PDT.
Offered by: Ebay seller 1860-1960, San Mateo, California, United States
Comments: A fan of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. Small, delicate motifs, with a few simple ring needle-made fillings. Good compartmentalized designs with a few unusual flowers. The carved Mother of Pearl sticks are a little overwhelming, and the depth of the lace itself is a little narrow for a typical fan. It has the original tassel. The lace is backed with a shear fabric which loses a little of the design in the lace.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: One repair to a guard stick.
Soilage: Hard to tell the color of the lace, maybe a little beige. Some localized reddish discoloration, mainly along the ribs.
Finish: Expected fan creases. The top edge is a little wrinkled, but seems to be intact.

Comments: A Devon pieced bobbinlace border with droschel ground. The design is a little simpler than contemporary Flemish work. Note the interesting fillings which will eventually develop into the leadworks of Honiton. No esprit work in the ground which leaves a lot of open space.
Provenance: None cited.

Comments: A Mechlin border in the style of the late 18th to early 19th c. 7 rows of esprits in the upper ground, impressive. The design of the lower border has a little resemblance to Beveran work. This is a lace meant to be ruffled.
There is one design change at the 40 cm join – 5 rows of esprits, and the motifs are a little different. But the overall width is the same.
Provenance: From the auction http://tinyurl.com/zbs95qs.
Date: 1st quarter 18th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut. One join 40 cm from one end (design changes). There appear to be other joins, not so prominent as the one at the bottom of the photo. One done in zigzag. Engrelure added.
Damage: Occasional pinhole, a little repair in the mesh.
Soilage: Some tiny localized red spots. Seller cites a pale ivory color.

Comments: A white Chantilly border. Short floral repeat, little in the way of fillings. Hard to tell where something like this was made. We have similar pieces labeled ‘Belgium’, and of course Chantilly is possibility. Other people will call them a product of Bayeau.
I can’t tell if this is silk or cotton, but I’m guessing cotton.

No decorative ‘mode’ fillings. The ordinary cordonnet is also buttonholed with widely spaced stitch, also a Belgian technique.

Comments: Handkerchief of Brussels Duchesse. No raised work in the Point de Gaze inserts. There is some raised work on halfstitch ground in the bobbinlace. Nice work in the corner medallions with the small buds surrounding the PdG inserts. The rest is fairly conventional.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.

Comments: Pieces similar to this have been written about on the seller’s LaceCurator site, http://tinyurl.com/js5qtj5. It is a cutwork piece with an Alençon réseau fin ground, as well as some interesting decorative ‘mode’ fillings. The edges appear to be buttonholed. I’ve never seen anything like it before, so we have to do a lot of guessing. I think it’s a later 19th c. piece. The ground is French, the fillings are sort of a modern Belgium interpretation of older work. Cutwork was done in several countries, no real clue there. I’d like to get it under a microscopy, especially determine what kind of thread the needlelace portions are. It is a mystery.
Date: Later 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut on the ends.
