Comments: A bonnet veil of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. Note the ribbon strung through the top edge for gathering the piece around the back of a bonnet. Scattered flowers along the bottom border and two types of small sprigs are used as esprits in the ground. Some motifs have needlemade knot grids as fillings.  Quite a nice, light effect overall.

Size: 82″ top edge, 29.5″ deep
Starting Price: £120.00
Auction ends: December 17, 2016 1:28 PM PST.
Offered by: Ebay seller pbur3053, Scottish Borders, United Kingdom
Comments: A cape made in two parts of muslin applique on machine net. Themotifs looks attached with tambour, which is a sign of Belgian work. Some of the motifs are embroidered with what might be French knots, and there’s some needlerun patterns used as fillings. The pieces appears to be made of three parts, a deep collar with two flounces. I’m not sure how the lower flounce is attached; the upper one is sewn to the lower edge of the collar. Excellent pattern matching of all pieces, with florals and leaves, small sprigs used as esprits in the ground.  Nice presence to this piece.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 3rd quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean
Finish: Slight draping creasing, minor.

Comments: A fan of Brussels Bobbinlace applique on machine net with Mother of Pearl sticks.  Simple light design like flowers and leaves scattered in the wind. A few needle-made knots used in flower centers, and the circular esprits might be needle-made, hard to tell from the photos.
Provenance: None cited.

Soilage: The lace looks clean, but there is some brown staining on the ribs which may have transferred to the lace.

Comments: A fan of Point de Gaze, a high end market product. Multiple raised petals on the roses, and the needle-made decorative ‘mode’ fillings are excellent, both singly and in grid form. Naturalistic florals and strapwork.  The carved and inlaid MOP sticks compliment the piece nicely, and note the original tassel.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 3rd quarter 19th c.

Modifications: None.
Damage: Seller cites some minimal wear, but I can’t find anything obvious in the lace. Maybe a few pinholes. The mesh is very fine.

Starting Price: 90.00 EUR
Auction ends: December 18, 2016 12:35 PM PST.
Offered by: Ebay seller bethsalie, paris, Île-de-France, France
Comments: A Point de Gaze border, no raised work. Foral motifs, but with an architectural look caused by the ‘fence’ running through the middle of the design. Note both the interesting top of the border, a solid strip, quite unusual.  The picots at the bottom are spiky and widely spaced, sign of an unknown manufacturer. Rows of picoted rings form fillings in the ‘fence. Interesting, effective piece.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Engrelure added. One end looks like it might be a natural beginning, not sure of the other end.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites ivory color.

Starting Price: 180.00 EUR
Auction ends: December 18, 2016 12:39 PM PST.
Offered by: Ebay seller bethsalie, paris, Île-de-France, France
Comments: Another Point de Gaze border, no raised work. A higher end market piece with floral swags and a ribbon/bow design.  Closely spaced teardrop shapes in the border separated by a lattice grid filling. This piece doesn’t do as much with the decorative ‘mode’ fillings as the one above, but is no less effective. But both these pieces experiment a little with clothwork. The widely spaced looped picots on the bottom indicate the same manufacturer as the previous piece.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Ends cut, engrelure added.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites ivory color.

Offered by: Ebay seller gothikaart, Venezia, Italy
Comments: A Burano needlelace mat with some areas of raised work..
Provenance: A family piece from the seller, who is from Venice. It s more in the line of a Rose Point Burano, with buttonholed cordonnet. Note the unusual ‘spiderweb’ fillings – I haven’t seen that in Burano before. Mostly bride ground, but some mesh.
Date: ~1900
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: One rough edge in a motif.
Soilage: Mostly ivory color with some light brown marks.

Starting Price: $75.00
Auction ends: December 20, 2016 9:00 AM PST.
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: An interesting fallcap of Eastern European lace.  It is all tape lace, and the center part is formed to fit the outside edge. There’s also a 6-pointed star filling along the outside. The work is quite loose, and the thread may be linen.  Note the woven leaf flowers in the centers of some motifs.  I’ve never seen anything like it, although it might be something from the Yelts area.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: ~1900
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious form the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.

Starting Price: £130.00
Auction ends: December 20, 2016 10:18 AM PST.
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: An unusual Brussels Duchesse fan, with the bobbin motifs a little on the Bloemwerk side. The Point de Gaze inserts have no ground and are elaborate Iris motifs, nicely matched with similar bobbinlace patterns. Extensive ring and knot grids used as decorative ‘mode’ fillings. This all has an Art Nouveau feel.
Provenance: Bought in Paris.
Date: ~1900
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious form the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites pale ivory color.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: A rectangular scarf of Brussels bobbin and needlelace applique on machine net.  The needlelace is a single raised petal Point de Gaze rose at each end, along with rings and knots used as decorative ‘mode’ fillings elsewhere. Bobbinlace are conventional flowers and leaves, no raised work other than some ribbed veins. Interesting combination of techniques.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: I see one small hole in the tulle near one rose.
Soilage: Seller cites antique white color.

Offered by: Ebay seller chantillydreams, Bloomington, Indiana, United States
Comments: A vest of Brussels Duchesse – no raised work in the Point de Gaze inserts. This type of lace comes up very rarely in clothing form, although there are recorded blouse and skirt sets. This piece does not appear to be assembled, and the way it lays of the dress form is quite elegant. The motifs are fairly conventional, but everything works very well together.

Modifications: Looks original, and has good left/right symmetry.
Damage: Occasional pinhole in the PdG mesh.

Ebay seller razzooo, Kennebunk, Maine, United States
Comments: Two Maltese silk round collars. The first has an unconventional design, yet it builds on the more traditional collars. The neckline ‘wheat ears’ are quite heavy and separated. The guipure work around the edge look almost like birds -overall quite a bold appearance. Compare this with the more usual second piece with the lighter three layer construction – Crosses on the outer edge, flowers in the center, and a small woven leaf neckline.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: An Irish Youghal needlelace collar. Picoted bride ground, small motifs with varied fillings.  I like how the curved leaves help define the cutouts in the main collar part.  The actual neckline is quite dense in patterning, not quite consistent with the rest of the design.  Youghal pieces of this size are fairly rare.
