l’Aiguille en Féte is a yearly craft show in Paris devoted to needlework (embroidery, couture, quilting, knitting, lace, and others). It has two forms – a 4-day public exhibition, expecting 250 vendors and 45,000 visitors, and a 3-day professional trade show. The professional show “AEF PRO PARIS” will run March 8-10, also at the Porte de Versailles (http://tinyurl.com/melbvcn). However I’m mainly concentrating on the public event in this post.

There will be two competitions, one in speed knitting (the record is 244 stitches in 3 minutes), and one in couture sewing.  There will also be numerous demonstrations and exhibitions, http://tinyurl.com/llegjkn, many on this year’s oriental theme.
There are some classes associated with the public event under the title “Universit du Fil’ (http://tinyurl.com/k87ghs6)  including “Atelier Dentelle aux Fuseaux” by Florence Quinette,  “Atelier Réaliser une broche en dentelle de Venise” by Myriam Benamo, and “Atelier Broderie à Reticello” by Guiliana Buonpadre.  Participants are limited in the classes, and cost is extra.

Ebay Alerts! Twenty-one items – January 4, 2015

http://tinyurl.com/pvhqt42 Antique Irish Crochet Cotton Vintage Lace Collar Very Fine Small Scale Work
Size: 26″ long, 5.25″ max depth.
Starting Price: $89.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: Jan 4, 2014, 10:10 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller twist-in-time, Keller, Texas, United States
Comments: An Irish Crochet collar or more probably a dress front.  Quite delicate work with a lot of heavy raised rings in motif centers. Also in a kind of rayed ‘snowflake’ pattern – I’ve seen this in smaller pieces, definitely a sign of fine work. The design is fairly dense, and I think the picots are crocheted, not Clones knots, but would need more closeups to be certain.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Seller thinks there might be a few tiny thread breaks but I can’t find them.
Soilage: Age patina.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

http://tinyurl.com/ohcc5vy Antique/vintage Bruges lace bertha collar
Size: 37″ x 5.2″
Starting Price: 30.00 GBP
Auction ends: Jan 4, 2014, 11:32 PM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A bertha of Bruges Bloemwerk pieced bobbinlace. Typical flower and leaf motifs with irregular picoted brides.  The ‘islands’ where a series of brides meet is also a feature of this lace. The design is a bit scattered, and the ends don’t match up very well, but that’s minor.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: A few broken brides. A little frayed on neckline, but that might be leftover threads from a previous mounting.
Soilage: ‘Soft old white colour’.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

231435451809   Sold for 32.00 GBP, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/qxs7yv9 Antique/vintage 19thC triangular Honiton lace shawl
Size: 80″ wide, 55″ along other two sides (I think).
Starting Price: 85.00 GBP
Auction ends: Jan 5, 2014, 10:36 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A triangular shawl of Honiton applique on machine net. Triangular shawls like this don’t come up often, they are more often square or rectangular. Fairly simple design, rather snails/slugs in the border and in the flowers used as esprits. The corner designs are a more advanced flower and leaf spray.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Pinholes in the tulle with areas of wear.
Soilage: Seller cites ‘mid cream with areas of age browning’.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles. Lovely drape.

http://tinyurl.com/qelf5lx A Beautiful Length OF Antique Brussels Lace
Size: 25 cm x 110 cm
Starting Price: 52.00 GBP
Auction ends: Jan 5, 2014, 12:10 PM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller winterwonderlandfairy, london, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of Duchesse de Bruges, bordering on Bloemwerk from the size and style of the motifs. And note the rectangular picoted brides with islands, which is more on the Bruges side. Yet something about the flavor of the piece looks more Duchesse.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut. Engrelure added.
Damage: Seller cites a few holes in the engrelure.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Some vertical fold creases.

351271109528   Sold for 52.00 GBP, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/nrh63l5 19th Century Handmade Point de Venise Needle lace 3 plus Yards
Size: ~5″ x just over 3 yards.
Starting Price: $245.00
Auction ends: Jan 6, 2014, 12:17 PM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A border of Venise needlelace, probably Belgian. The chains of rings are similar to what you find in Point de Gaze. It has some interesting filling patterns. Spiked picots on the brides, and a little decorative work in the clothwork. Nice design, and the decorative stitches give it an open appearance.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: One end cut, can’t see the other end.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Ecru/ beige.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

131391683213   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/oqj8qn8 Antique Honiton bobbin lace Cape Collar Butterflies, Ferns, Ivy Cox Collection
Size: 38-40″ neckline, ~12″ deep center back.
Starting Price: $275.00
Auction ends: Jan 6, 2014, 12:43 PM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A shawl collar of Honiton Point, meaning Honiton lace with a needle-made ground. Quite an elegant design. Some of the edge motifs around the neckline look a little clipped, not sure what’s going on. The design looks nicely put together.
Provenance:  Ex. coll. Susan Cox of the English Lace School, Tiverton, UK.
Condition:
Modifications: Neckline might have been modified. Looks like there’s an additional picot edge along the neckline in places.
Damage: A few tiny holes in the mesh, some edge motifs frayed. Might be a little bit of repair work to the mesh.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Starting Price: $155.00
Auction ends: Jan 6, 2014, 15:30 PM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A border of square-mesh Valenciennes. Rows of oval dots in upper ground. The main pattern has a simple flower and leaf pattern, with a round ring design forming a scalloped edge. A simple woven filling in open spaces, and note the looped lower picot edge.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: One end cut, can’t see the other end.
Damage: A few tiny
Soilage: A little dusty, slight age discoloration.
Finish: Some light fold creases.

Size: cuffs: 8.5″ x 3.25 to 2-1/8″. collar: 22″ neckline x 1.5″ to 3″ depth.
Starting Price: $88.00 Buy-it-Now or Make Offer
Auction ends: Jan 6, 2014, 16:14 PM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller vintageblessings, Meridian, Idaho, United States
Comments: A narrow collar and cuff set of Duchesse de Bruxelles.  Raised petals in the Point de Gaze roses.  The motifs are pretty standards so they appear to match, however the cuffs have some leaves with half-stitch background that are missing in the collar. And the needlelace flowers don’t exactly match.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: A few pinholes in the PdG ground.  A few frayed edges in some bobbinlace motifs.
Soilage: Light cream color. Some light tanning along neckline.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

http://tinyurl.com/lwkx2gb Unusual 18th c. Mechlin bobbin lace study piece Doll
Size: 2″ x 1 yard.
Starting Price: $135.00
Auction ends: Jan 6, 2014, 17:26 PM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A border of mid 18th style Mechlin bobbinlace. As the seller notes, it has the kind of design that works well as a mirror imaging in making larger widths.  Interesting fillings, especially along the footedge with the rows of rings arranged in a triangle.  A few tiny windows in the clothwork, typical of this lace, each one made is a prayer to the Virgin (nicely discussed in old issues of the Lace Magazine International).
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends, engrelure added.
Damage: Minor pulls in the ground, looks quite well intact.
Soilage: Ivory color. Some localized brown spotting.
Finish: Some vertical fold creases.

131391857211  Sold for $135.00, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/ogu6mbp Point de Gaze Lace Lappet / Large / Fancy / Mint
Size: 42″ x 4.8″ to 2.8″
Starting Price: $49.00
Auction ends: Jan 6, 2014, 19:00 PM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller textiles2012, Hydes, Maryland, United States
Comments: A Point de Gaze lappet scarf, no raised work. Note the widely spaced looped picots along the edges, this is a sign of an unknown manufacturer doing excellent work. Floral masses in the ends, and each end has a large decorative ‘mode’ filling insert, beautifully done.  I find the long mid-section of the scarf a little plain, but very well done and appropriate to the overall design.
Provenance:  From seller’s private collection.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites ‘original patina’, not sure what that means.
Finish: Looks like one fold crease in the center of band, expected and minor. The piece looks unused.

261718040300   Sold for $154.50, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/nlq2v2t Late 18th Edging English Bobbin lace on Droschel Mesh Earnshaw Collection
Size: 5″ x 2.5 yards.
Starting Price: $185.00
Auction ends: Jan 6, 2014, 17:56 PM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A border of bobbinlace, I’ll say appliqued on droschel ground, although I’d like to see some photos from the backside to be certain. Part of the mesh passes underneath the motifs, and part is cut away, so a little hard to tell the exact manufacture.  This more in the ‘Directoire’ style with very thin motifs, although it lacks a bit of the geometric symmetry we’d expect (you also see similar designs in Lille and Mechlin of the period). I think it’s Belgian manufacture, we don’t see designs like this coming out of England in this period.  And the very straight edge is more typical of European work.  Interesting about the thread used in the mesh, I’ve been doing some careful measurements of laces from various periods, and this seems to be some of the finest linen thread ever spun.
Provenance:  Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw auctioned by Kerry Taylor Oct 2014.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends, engrelure added.
Damage: Minor pulls in the ground, and lower edge a bit worn.
Soilage: Ivory color. Seller says it has been freshly washed, but gives no details on the process.
Finish: A little wrinkled.

131391935300   Sold for $185.00, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/o9ydhoe Old Handmade Bobbin Lace Study Piece Prob. early 18th C. English
Size: 2.75″ x 1 yard 18″
Starting Price: $85.00
Auction ends: Jan 7, 2014, 12:29 PM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A border of pieced bobbinlace with droschel ground, mid 18th c style. This doesn’t have the rather spiral feel to the motifs that you see in Devon lace, it looks more like Brabant. However the long lines of raised work reaching across parts of the motifs appears to be a more English trait. Jury’s out on this one.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends, engrelure added.
Damage: A few small breaks in the ground and engrelure.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Soft vertical fold creasing, a little wrinkled, especially along engrelure.

Starting Price: $9.99
Auction ends: Jan 7, 2014, 13:46 PM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller raggedyandrea, Honey Brook, Pennsylvania, United States
Comments: A handkerchief of Duchesse de Bruges, hard to identify the exact type. Picoted roughly square brides with a few ‘islands’. Nice technique and a good pattern.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Worn, some pinholes in the cloth.
Soilage: Age stains.
Finish: Horizontal and vertical fold creases, other creases and wrinkles.

http://tinyurl.com/n7jnnlz * Antique Bobbin Lace ‘BUCKS’ Buckinghamshire FALL CAP *
Size: ~40″ long.
Starting Price: $19.99
Auction ends: Jan 8, 2014, 11:23 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester, United Kingdom
Comments: A fallcap of something.  You do see this kind of openwork structure in Bucks, but also in Lille. In both those laces it is usually combined with a point ground.  I’m also thrown a bit by the very heavy gimp. I think I’m leaning toward Lille, however the seller is from England, and that does tend to count when you find unusual pieces like this.  I don’t recall seeing anything like this before, but I’ll keep looking.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: A few breaks and some wear along the edges.
Soilage: Off white. A few localized brown spots especially at the ends.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

161543487624   Sold for $138.50, 7 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/oymfcgc Handmade Brussels Bobbin Lace Edging Droschel Ground Bride Collector Decor
Size: 3.25″ x 2 yards 9″
Starting Price: $135.00
Auction ends: Jan 9, 2014, 8:06 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: Brussels bobbinlace applique on Droschel ground. Motifs have some needle-made fillings which look more like what you find in later Point de Gaze. But I’m having trouble attributing this lace to a time after mid 19th c, droschel net pretty much died out by 1830 for production pieces like this.  The fillings are a bit of a mystery.  The picot edge is also a little odd. I’d like to put it early 19th C, but the more romantic design and some technical elements seem later. I almost wonder if this wasn’t made later in the century using an old piece of handmade net.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends, one looks secured. Engrelure added.
Damage: Some pulls in the net.
Soilage: Ecru with slight localized stains.
Finish: Vertical fold creases.

Offered by: Ebay seller iotech30, South Windsor, Connecticut, United States
Comments: Brussels Duchesse handkerchief without raised work in the Point de Gaze insert.  Some are taken from the wrong side.  Conventional motifs, I like the little diamond in the corners.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: A little worn, and a few broken brides. PdG mesh looks in good shape.
Soilage: Center cloth a little stained.
Finish: Horizontal and vertical fold creases, other diagonal creases. A little wrinkled.

Comments: A border of square-mesh Valenciennes.  Not a very complex design, but good clean motifs with closely woven technique. One row of single dots in the upper ground.
Provenance:  None cited.

Modifications: Cut one end, can’t see the other.

Comments: A fan leaf of what appears to be white silk point ground, could be Chantilly. Given the design I’m thinking it’s a Belgian piece, there wasn’t much going on in Chantilly itself in the early 19th c. Interesting design, although the motifs aren’t too refined. A very unusual piece.

Offered by: Ebay seller greatlace, Palm Beach, Florida, United States
Comments: A long piece of French needlelace, Argentan or Alençon, 3rd quarter 18th c.  (I still maintain it’s very difficult to tell the two products apart at this period in time.) Extensive buttonholed mesh, with rèseau fin used as fillings. The design is quite simple. As for the form, it is quite puzzling. It all looks in one piece, with a large lappet-like termination at one end, and a smaller one at the other.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: One small repair, a few pinholes, and one loose spot on an edge.
Soilage: Ecru/beige color.  A few small brown stains.

Comments: A pillow with inset roller, stand, and Swedish bobbins. It does seem to be consistent with Swedish equipment, but very difficult to determine age.  Nicely turned stand.   Seller says the cloth is green, but it’s not obvious from the photos.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
