Workshop on how to marketing lace, Martha Medeiros

This exhibition brings together over 100 pieces collected in various parts of Brazil, along with equipment used in production, photographs and objects which provide inspiration. Fashion is also exhibited with the work of Paula Ferber da Fonseca, the Paula Villalonge brand, which is a partnership with lacemakers of the Centro Artesanal da Prainha de Fortaleza. Lace techniques highlighted include bobbinlace, filet, tatting, Irish crochet, Nanduti and Renaissance lace.  It seems that a catalog will eventually be produced.

Ebay Alerts! Thirteen items – July 11, 2013

http://tinyurl.com/kxwuxp5 ANTIQUE LACE FABULOUS HANDMADE POINT DE GAZE HANDKERCHIEF MINT UNUSED
Size: 14″ square
Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Jul 13, 2013 15:46:36 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller greatlace, Palm Beach, Florida, United States
Comments:  A Point de Gaze handkerchief, good example of a high end market piece.  No raised work, which is fine, and decorative ‘mode’ fillings extensively used close to the cloth center. Note the picots around the edge, just single small loops accenting the points in the design. Good naturalistic pattern giving a dense but well organized flow – it almost looks like it swirls around the center cloth.  Very good condition, looks unused – just creases from folding.

221250759542   Sold for $350.00, 7 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/m6nfra9 Exquisite antique handmade Brussels mixed lace Point de Gaze – wide collar 1880s
Size: neckline 106 cm, outside edge 190 cm, 13 cm deep
Starting Price: 120.00 GBP
Auction ends: Jul 14, 2013 10:25:45 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller linskapet, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway DG6 4UU, United Kingdom
Comments:  A Duchesse de Bruxelles bertha. No raised petal work on the Point de Gaze inserts, and they have an interesting single flower design. There are a few rings used as needlelace fillings in some flowers, and good raised work on the Duchesse motifs surrounding the Point de Gaze  The bobbinlace is fairly standard for this type of lace. Condition is very good, seller cites one small storage mark, and that the piece was found in basically unused condition.

200941039126   Sold for 120.00 GBP, 1 bidder.

Size: 8 cm x 180 cm
Starting Price: 92.00 GBP
Auction ends: Jul 14, 2013 10:31:31 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller linskapet, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway DG6 4UU, United Kingdom
Comments:  A border of Brussels application on machine net – mostly bobbin motifs, but  there is one flower per repeat done in needlelace. Good small motifs, and note the spots carefully used as esprits in the ground. Seller says it looks unused, and I don’t see any problems from the photos. A few minor storage marks, basically very good condition.

Size: 33 cm square
Starting Price: 82.00 GBP
Auction ends: Jul 14, 2013 10:55:26 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller linskapet, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway DG6 4UU, United Kingdom
Comments:  A Duchesse handkerchief, entirely of bobbinlace.  Good design with well done raised work especially on the corner flowers. Seller has washed the piece, although does not say why, since it is also stated that it appears unused. From the photos I’d call this very good condition.

190866958324   Sold for 82.00 GBP, 1 bidder.

Starting Price: 520.00 GBP
Auction ends: Jul 14, 2013 12:05:12 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller linskapet, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway DG6 4UU, United Kingdom
Comments:  A Duchesse de Bruxelles border; an exceptionally wide and long survivor. Also an example of a high end market piece – note the elaborate raised work in the bobbinlace. The Point de Gaze inserts have no raised work, but don’t need any. Seller cites a few very minor breaks and holes, but overall I’ll rate it very good condition.

190867978512   Sold for 520.00 GBP, 1 bidder.

Starting Price: $9.99 with reserve
Auction ends: Jul 14, 2013 15:44:42 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller chantillydreams, Mount Sinai, New York, United States
Comments:  A Duchesse de Bruxelles bertha, although the bobbinlace is a bit on the plainer Bruges side. Point de Gaze inserts have raised petal roses. Seller cites a good discussion of the two major types of this lace, although I will note that from visits and literature, Point de Gaze was made in the Bruges area. So it is difficult to exactly attribute these pieces to a particular location. I can spot a few broken brides and minor pinholes in the needlelace mesh – overall good condition.

Starting Price: $495.00
Auction ends: Jul 14, 2013 18:53:12 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller twist-in-time, Pottstown, Pennsylvania, United States
Comments:  A Point de Gaze fan with probably bone sticks, and a carved monogram on the guardstick. No raised work in the lace, and it has some good decorative ‘mode’ fillings and ring chains used in flower centers. This is a very dense, naturalistic design. A few brown spots in the lace, a few pinholes, but basically very good condition.

Starting Price: 78.00 EUR
Auction ends: Jul 15, 2013 10:56:00 H.Esp
Offered by: Ebay seller malin0693, Comunidad Valenciana, España
Comments:  This looks like a Le Puy guipure piece with the very elaborate grounds, but Spain is not out of the running here. It’s hard to tell the exact shape of the piece, I think it might be a roughly triangular shawl, but with a more semicircular shape. Excellent work and design done in heavy black silk thread – I especially like the plaiting on the outer edges. Just wish there was a photo with it all spread out to see the exact design. Seller cites minor breaks, basically very good condition from what I can see.

Starting Price: 25.00 EUR
Auction ends: Jul 15, 2013 03:28:08 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller feni1389, Castellón de la Plana, Comunidad Valenciana, Spain
Comments:  I’d call this a semicircular hat veil if it were anywhere but Spain, here it’s probably a small mantilla headcover. It is quite a striking guipure pattern reminding me both of Maltese in construction, but Le Puy in pattern. As with the shawl above, there’s a good possibility it is Spanish.  I see a few broken brides here and there, but overall good condition.

Starting Price: $45.00
Auction ends: Jul 15, 2013 08:46:19 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments:  Seems to be a bertha collar, although it’s a bit hard to see from the photos. I don’t think this is Carrickmacross, there aren’t any typical Irish elements, and the needlerun fillings are a bit simple. Photos not close enough to see how the motifs are attached to the tulle; overcast or tambour.  Possibly a Belgian piece. Very good design, and it also looks in very good condition, almost unused.

Starting Price: 75.00 EUR
Auction ends: Jul 15, 2013 11:03:08 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller sirjle, Paris, France
Comments:  A long length of fine Irish Crochet in the earlier horseshoe pattern. Note the little raised rings in each repeat. Since the seller is in France I wonder if this is an example of French ‘Irish crochet’, not certain. What I can see looks in very good condition.

330948939746   Sold for 75.00 EUR, 1 bidder.

Starting Price: 20.00 EUR
Auction ends: Jul 15, 2013 13:05:06 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller ladyline55, Troyes, France
Comments:  A long, wide flounce of bobbinlace application on machine net. A few needlelace ring chains and fillings in flower centers, but basically the design relies on well-defined bobbinlace motifs. It’s an effective, yet simple design, probably a later 19th c piece. There are a few small holes in the tulle, overall good condition.

Starting Price: $250.00
Auction ends: Jul 15, 2013 18:41:48 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller greatlace, Palm Beach, Florida, United States
Comments:  It’s rare to see Point de Gaze used in table linens, but not unknown. This one has an interesting design of flower in vases, lots of raised petal roses. Also some good ‘mode’ decorative fillings. It is quite a romantic design, perhaps done for a bridal trousseau. There are a number of tiny holes in the mesh, and a few frayed spots in the lace clothwork. Overall good condition.

http://tinyurl.com/m98t3pg Antique hand made Binche lace for dolls clothes
Size: 5 cm x 150 cm
Starting Price: $14.99
Auction ends: Jul 8, 2013 03:44:09 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mylittleboyke, Borgloon, Belgium
Comments:  A Valenciennes lace, ~1740, with the cinq trou ground, and various snowball fillings.  Valenciennes experimented with several grounds around this period before settling on the later 18th c plaited round mesh. The square mesh developed in the early 19th c. This one has a well done typical design for the period, and despite a few small age spots, looks in very good condition. One of my favorite laces.

281129561609   Sold for $157.50, 6 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/lvj59wr Antique hand made Binche lace but with old repairs on
Size: ~18 cm x ~50 cm
Starting Price: $14.99
Auction ends: Jul 8, 2013 03:57:46 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mylittleboyke, Borgloon, Belgium
Comments:  I would put this lace in the ‘Pottenkant’ category, which was more indicative of a general design than a specific type of lace. They were made in the 19th and 20th centuries, primarily for the Dutch market, for use in caps. It is usually a heavier lace, and the ground is often the plaited 6-point star called variously ‘kat stitch’ or ‘fond chant’; it has several names. The way the light hits this piece makes me suspect it is linen. The design is quite interesting, not too formal, and has an earlier feel.  For a fragment it looks in good condition; seller cites a few little age spots and old repairs. And there is some kind of strengthening to one motif. Just wish there were more, this lace doesn’t come up often at all.
Note also Ebay #271231985399, same seller, which has a similar feel, although much cut down and repaired.

Auction ends: Jul 8, 2013 10:06:27 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller isohex, Tyne-Wear,, United Kingdom
Comments:  A Mechlin border with a light design and straight edge, which might indicate an 19th c date a little earlier than 1850. Over the years I’ve had an opportunity to look at many of these under the microscope, and find that often the lace itself is made of cotton but the gimp is a thicker linen thread. This one looks in very good condition with an overall cream color; I can’t see any problems from the excellent photographs.

Offered by: Ebay seller socios22-2009, Castelar, default, Argentina
Comments:  The lace on this fan appears to be a Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net, although I’m unsure of the color of the tulle. Good naturalistic pattern, seller cites a few small holes in the net. I don’t know what the sticks are made of, but everything appears to be in good condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller sirjle, Paris, France
Comments:  A reasonably wide flounce of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net. There are some good needlelace fillings especially on the lower edge. The motifs are small and well done, good light design with sprigs used as esprits in the upper ground. Only one quite small hole in the tulle that I can see, overall very good condition.

Starting Price: $49.99
Auction ends: Jul 9, 2013 00:04:17 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mylittleboyke, Borgloon, Belgium
Comments:  Seller sys this is from a “nun’s stock” implying a religious use. It is a continuous guipure piece, not a pieced lace like standard Brugge Bloemwerk.  It’s possibly Belgian, but you see more like this with a French origin. It is one of those rather indeterminate guipures that are so hard to attribute.  It is a wide piece with a rather sturdy design, not too detailed, with a regular square plaited, picoted mesh. The thread has the look of linen, but you really can’t tell from the photos. Looks in very good condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller chantaiziere, Centre, France
Comments:  A narrow, long length of Valenciennes with the 19th century square mesh. The design is typical of Valenciennes meant for bed linens or nightclothes. Some of it looks a little loosely woven, but the design is more complex than usually seen.  It appears a bit wrinkled, but no obvious damage from the photos.  Looks in overall good condition.

Starting Price: $199.00
Auction ends: Jul 10, 2013 16:42:51 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller antique-monograms, Vancouver, Washington, United States
Comments:  A bertha of Burano needlelace.  Well done typical large flowerhead motifs (which are probably pomegranates) with a few fillings. But most of the effect is in the decoration of the clothwork. The design covers the area quite well; no esprits as is typical in Burano. Seller notes that there is a piece of lace in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the same pattern. So I went looking, easy to do since the MET has their entire collection online.  I found two borders http://tinyurl.com/kngevjl, and http://tinyurl.com/mf9hkp4, not exact copies but very close. The pomegranate, is an often-seen motif in Burano.
These berthas don’t come up too often.  A few small holes in the mesh, and some yellowing overall, would benefit from a professional conservative wash. Basically very good condition.

Comments:  A border of Point de Gaze, no raised work.  Note the large rings in the lattice at the upper edge, and there are some interesting clothwork stitches in the leaves at the lower edge. It’s an interesting design, nicely worked. Seller cites age yellowing, occasional spots and some small breaks, but basically it appears in very good condition from the photos.

Comments:  A border of Burano needlelace, same seller as above, with a similar design. The condition looks very good from the photos, seller cites only age yellowing.  See comments above.

Comments:  A lappet scarf or tie of Point de Gaze. An unusual shape with bulbous ends, probably later 19th c. No raised petals, and it has some excellent decorative ‘mode’ fillings – I especially like the heavy rings in the centers of the flowers. Interesting, there seems to be picots along the edge on one lappet, but not the other.  A few age spots and you can see some tiny holes in the mesh. Basically good condition.

Comments:  A narrow rectangular scarf of Duchesse lace, no needlelace accents. It has a good, interesting design with large leaves incorporating some raised ribs used as veining. Very good condition, I don’t see any problems from the photos.

Offered by: Ebay seller antique-monograms, Vancouver, Washington, United States
Comments:  A bertha of Belgian pieced lace, with grounds of both picoted brides and square mesh. Things like this tended to come up at the end of the 19the century, going under the names Point de Milan and Point de Flandre. I can’t spot the exact attribution nhere, but it does appear to be entirely bobbinlace with much of the work based on a fine Duchesse. It does look a bit wrinkled, perhaps a sign of past washing. Overall good condition.

Comments:  And another Burano piece, same seller as above, and basically the same pattern. So see comments on the first one reviewed above.  Here the design of the ‘pomegranate’ fills the entire space.  Age yellowing but otherwise in very good condition.

This exhibition is in celebration of the 30th anniversary of l’Amicale des Dentellières du Locle. They will be demonstrating lacemaking on all Saturdays and Sundays from 14:00 to 17:00.
Le Locle is in the great lacemaking center of the Canton of Neuchâtel in Switzerland. Lace was exported from Le Locle as early as 1650. Around 1770 there were 726 lacemakers in Locle compared to 331 watchmakers. Around 1840 watchmaking activities superseded lacemaking, and the lace industry essentially died.
