Lecture: Dr. Laurie Waters, “New Piece of Old Lace In My Office, Come See!” – June 20, 2013

New Piece of Old Lace In My Office, Come See!
Modern research techniques for historic textiles
Sponsor:
Brookhaven Women in Science
Speaker:
Dr. Laurie Waters, Los Alamos National Laboratory
Place:  Berkner Hall, Brookhaven National Laboratory
William Floyd Parkway, County Road 46, 1.5 miles north of Exit 68 of the Long Island Expressway.  Visitors to the lab over the age of 16 must bring identification, see http://www.bnl.gov/visiting/ for detailed information.
Date: Thursday, June 20, 2013
Time: The workshop starts at 3:30 PM, lecture at 5:00 PM
Website: http://www.bnl.gov/newsroom/news.php?a=11546
Information: LaceNews@gmail.com

Textile research is a fascinating combination of art, anthropology, sociology, and the physical sciences. Existing collections in museums are increasingly benefiting from techniques familiar to the physicist, chemist, and biologist to characterize fragile items. Dr. Waters will discuss how such techniques are used the specific field of handmade lace. For example, carbon dating and genetics could help solve one of the biggest mysteries – the virtual disappearance of the superfine linen thread used in the 18th and early 19th centuries.

Laurie Waters did her thesis on Experiment E814 at Brookhaven, graduating from Stony Brook University with a PhD in physics in 1990. As a nuclear physicist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, her research focused on Monte Carlo radiation transport simulations for accelerator and threat reduction applications. She led the spallation target research efforts for the Accelerator Production of Tritium project and played a key role in the development of the Monte Carlo N-Particle eXtended code (MCNPX). She also has had a longtime interest in textiles as a collector, researcher, and maker of handmade lace.

A hands-on workshop will also be held at 3:30 pm, for kids of all ages on how lace is made, identified, and cared for.

Note:  This event is open to the public, and one of the aims is to help interest young people in the sciences.

Comments:  Hollie point is an English knotted needlelace (although some later examples appear to play with twisted stitches) dating from the 18th to early 19th centuries. It was usually used in baby clothes and normally done as a domestic art. If the three items in this set go together, they appears to be a mid 18th c date from the cinq trou Valenciennes edge to the sleeves.  This would also be consistent with the vertical piece below the roundel on the cap, which is a mid 18th c development. The patterns in Hollie point are line-drawn images, normally of flowers. Some documentation with these pieces indicates a tree-of-life and flower pot of the annunciation pattern.   Looks in very good condition considering the age.

Comments:  A shoulder cape with collar, sometimes called a pelerine of a good quality guipure lace.  Note the complex ground and various motifs with a point ground background in some cartouches. The design is a little atypical for Beds, so I’m thinking it might be a Le Puy variation. Russia is also a possibility. There are a few holes and broken brides and some marks on the collar.  Basically good condition.

Comments:  A lappet set which I assume are joined at the tops. The lace is a Brussels bobbinlace with bride ground, around 1720. The design in the two lappets is roughly mirror symmetric although many of the motifs don’t match well, especially toward the presumed join. There’s also a later 19th c picoted edge – it was not unusual to add this to liven up older laces. But it does make it difficult to get a good look at the original edges. The design is also a little off, especially at the very ends whee it’s hard to determine the pattern. Question is, is this an original older set or has it been assembled from something else.  What looks moderately good at the ends starts to look questionable farther up, but I’d say the jury’s out on this one.  A few minor holes, basically very good condition.

Comments:  A cap back of Brussels bobbinlace with droschel ground, with the slightly larger motifs typical of the 1740’s.  Figural elements in this kind of lace come up occasional but rarely in a piece like this.  Well done tight weaving with both droschel and bride elements. A few minor holes and stains which would come out with an appropriate wash, basically good condition.

Comments:  A Duchesse de Bruxelles fan with three large Point de Gaze inserts. Raised petal roses, overall a standard Duchesse design. The lace, even the Point de Gaze net is intact, but has some condition problems at the lower edge. Someone seems to have tried to fix with red sealing wax. Don’t know if that would come off. One rib is broken.  Overall good condition.

Comments:  A Mechlin cap back, dates from the 1740’s. Very unusual to see Mechlin this wide – normally pieces like this were made in two parts joined down the middle. It is very well done with good quatrefoil fillings.  A few minor holes pushes the condition down to good.  This is a very rare piece, beautifully done.

Comments:  A rectangular shawl of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net. There are a few simple needlelace fillings, and extensive esprits in the ground. As with most of these pieces, the design focus is at the ends with foliate patterns. I’m not sure what the flowerhead is, perhaps a thistle?  The work is good although a little simple in design, perhaps a later 19th c piece. Overall condition looks very good, just a few pinholes and some faint storage spots.

Comments:  An embroidered net handkerchief with a very dense design. Possibly Irish with the harp designs and all the little shamrock-like trefoils.  I thought it might be tambour, but looking closely it almost looks like needlerun with a very thick thread.  Would need to study it a bit more.  I find the design quite effective.  There are a few separations from the linen and some stains in the cloth – seller indicates that it was washed. Basically good condition.

Comments:  Hmmm.   There are many Genoese elements here, but a few things bother me. It has a straight lower edge (in the photo), which is inconsistent with the scalloped form seen in most Genoese laces.  And that lower edge is continuous all along the length of the piece, which is a little strange.  The rosettes of woven leaves, at least in the part along the lower edge are a little more elaborate than normally seen. And while the tape parts are tight in some places they are a bit loose in others. Still, many Genoese elements are there, and the weaving has that tight early patina. But if it is an early 17th c piece it is atypical. Looks in very good condition, wish there were more.

For 40 years the towns of Alençon and Basingstoke have had a relationship known as ‘twinning’ http://tinyurl.com/bptz7lx, which seems to be related to the ‘sister cities’ programs in the US.  The exhibition consists of laces presumably lent by Alençon – unknown if examples from private collections will be shown. The website says that on the weekend of June 28th and 29th two of the seven Alençon lacemakers “the only ones in the world who possess the production technique for the Point d’Alençon” will be at the museum to show how the lace is made.  (the 2011 article in Piecework and recent classes at OIDFA and IOLI notwithstanding – and I realize I’m on dangerous ground here).
Alençon seems to be opening up a bit lately, probably as a result of being declared a UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010 http://tinyurl.com/mj2egh6. There will even be a lace festival in Alençon in September http://tinyurl.com/lvob8r6.

Starting Price: 14.95 GBP

Comments:  A Carrickmacross applique collar with deep points. Basically a shamrock design with good needlerun fillings in open swirls around the outer edge. It has a nice style. A few pinholes in the net and the outer edge, especially along the neckline closing is a little frayed.  Almost looks more from the making than from actual wear. Overall good condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments:  A border of Belgian bobbinlace with droschel ground, mid 18th c. It has been shaped at one end by cutting down, and I think another narrower piece, not matching, added. Perhaps to fit as a sleeve ruffle? The work itself is well done although a little loosely woven giving the motifs almost a transparent look. Given the modification and a number of small holes in the mesh, condition is short of good for this rather interesting piece.

Comments:  A Mechlin border, early 19th century style with a straight lower edge, thin foliate border and esprits in the ground.  You see this same kind of pattern in Lille and Valenciennes examples.  Seller has done an excellent job of photographing the entire piece. A few well-done repairs at the left end, and the occasional pull throughout. Overall good condition, and a nice example.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments:  A Brussels Duchesse collar with long front points which join together down the front of the bodice..  Large irregularly shaped Point de Gaze inserts with naturalistic raised petal roses are used in the inserts and along the outer edge at the back. Note the cup shape of the raised petals, sign of a better manufacturer.  They closely match the centers of adjoining bobbinlace flowers. Needlelace is also used in well done ‘mode’ fillings along the neckline.  The bobbinlace motifs are also of high quality, with interesting raised work.  Minor spotting but I don’t see any obvious holes. Overall condition looks very good.

Comments:  A border of Brussels bobbinlace with droschel ground, seems to have been shaped into a long collar.  Dates around 1760. Note the well-done raised work along the motif edges. The design is a bit plain, but it has some interesting fillings including a quatrefoil variation, like is often seen in contemporary Mechlin.   There are a number of small holes in the mesh and a few pulls, basically good condition for its age.

Comments:  A Flemish bobbinlace border with a 6-point plaited ground. It has a rather strong Brabant look, a catch-all term for products made outside of major cities such as Brussels and Ghent. The motifs are large loosely worked with no raised work and simple fillings.  Probably mid 18th c. It does have a number of small holes in the ground, but overall is in good condition for its age.  nice example of this style in a very collectible length.

Comments:  A small collar of Brussels bobbinlace appliqued on machine net.  Smaller shaped pieces of this lace are a bit unusual. The motifs are finely done, with only some simple needlelace fillings in flower centers.  A little frayed especially along the neck edge as if the tulle wasn’t trimmed properly. Comments:  This is a puzzling piece. Most of the net looks like machine tulle, while the lace along the lower border looks like a point ground bobbinlace. Maybe something like they did in Bayeau with cotton thread.  The edges almost look like they are appliqued on. Photos aren’t really close enough to get a good look at the technique.  Condition is good, just one area with a few small holes lower right corner.

Comments:  Joined lappets of what looks like Italian coraline, late 17th c.  I’m going to assume this is needlelace, because the photos aren’t close enough to show the detailed stitch structure. If so, you can see where early examples of Irish Crochet gets its inspiration. Or, it could be a later copy.  No photos of the mid-join area, so it’s hard to say if this is two separate or one complete piece. I think we need more detail here.  Overall it looks in very good condition.

Comments:  A rectangular shawl of elaborate Duchesse de Bruxelles. Note the large areas of Point de Gaze with fairly naturalistic raised petal roses, and the ‘mode’ decorative fillings used in lines down the sides of the piece.  The bobbinlace seems a bit crowded in the design, and only relies on about 3 different flat motifs, although it gets a bit more elaborate with raised work at the ends.  A few brown spots, and some breaks in the Point de Gaze mesh – overall good condition.

Comments:  A small triangular Point de Gaze shawl, a little more like a collar than a shawl.  The needlelace is quite finely done, not raised work, but that’s not a problem. It has a few ‘mode’ decorative fillings, but mostly relies on beautifully controlled clothwork in the motifs for effect. Note the single spiked picots along the edge, sign of an unfortunately unknown manufacturer. There are quite a few small holes in the Point de Gaze mesh, very difficult to repair, but they don’t detract much from the piece. Also a little discolored in places. Overall good condition.

Comments:  I think this is probably a Northern Italian lace, but it is too much of a pieced lace to really conform to the more tape-like Milano standards. And the design seems a little more romantic later 19th c.  It is very interesting with good decorative clothwork, and fillings of a variety of woven leaves and little mat-like stitches that I can’t quite place.  The ‘wheat ear’ leaf pattern is also a later development. Note the plaited ground combined with the large open areas, a very interesting effect.  Condi6tion is a little rough with holes and damage to the ground, on the lower end of good. Wish there were more of this.

Comments:  This is a larger piece than it looks.  It has the appearance of a white Le Puy guipure, especially with the 6 pointed star ground. But a Spanish origin is also possible.  The seller speculates it could be for religious vestments, although there’s no obvious religious iconography. It is joined in a circle.  There’s only one photo, but the condition looks very good.
6/9/2013, 4:20 PM MST.  I just heard from former Retournac lace museum curator Bruno Ythier about this piece. He says it comes from a Retournac workshop called “Experton Frère et Soeur”, and hopefully he can find the actual pattern number.

Comments:  A German Klöppelstand, Klöppelsack and 34 hooded bobbins.  Good folk art painting and appropriate use patina. The pillow is pretty worn.  I have several of these and they are a lot stronger than you might think.  This one is rather simple but elegant, it lacks the drawer below the pillow basket that you sometimes find. Condition looks good.

Comments:  A Belgian rectangular pillow with a ratcheted roller at the upper end, and a drawer in the back of the base. Comes with a large number of Belgian bobbins, patterns, and accessories. And it has a provenance with the name of the original owner in Turnhout. This is consistent with the Kempenland district designation of a similar pillow shown in the book “Klöppel – Kissen – Ständer”. The two-part Belgian rectangular cushions are seen fairly regularly on Ebay, but the roller version is more unusual. This one looks like the roller has seen some use, and isn’t quite as cylindrical as a new one would be, but overall it appears to be in very good condition.

Comments:  Another shorter piece of this lace is listed as Ebay #111088807020.  This is a long border of Brussels Application on machine net, with needle-made motifs. Much less common than the bobbin-made variety. I think it’s a later 19th c piece; the design doesn’t quite have the really romantic feel of mid 19th c, and the motifs are fairly simple with a bit of an art noveau feel. No attempt at really decorative fillings.  Condition looks very good. I don’t see any problems from the photos, and for a lace like this it is quite unusual to find something this nicely intact.

Comments:  I always like to review the white silk point ground laces when they come up on Ebay since they don’t very often appear and are always quite interesting. Comments:  Two fragments of Mechlin, around 1740. They have the same pattern with the cinq trou ground, but almost look like they were worked by a different hand – left out the gimp on one of them which is very strange!  Note the very straight edge, also a little unusual. Comments:  A length of Bucks that seems to have been made up from two other borders, but the intended matching isn’t always working out.   It’s a bit hard to see what’s going on here. Two of the borders seem joined lengthwise, and there are several cutouts as if this were originally part of a larger gown, as the seller notes. I’m guessing the two parts are meant to match with a racroc join (as shown in the seller’s 6th photo), but this patterns seems to have gone awry in other parts of the piece.  The overall piece is short of good condition, with lots of cuts and some stains. But the lace appears to be a good floral bucks pattern, not the most elaborate, but nicely done.

Comments:  Branscombe lace is a mixed tape lace, and is certainly possible for this handkerchief. Looking at Susan Cox’s book Branscombe Point Lace, note the outer purled edge (a few bunched buttonhole stitches) which is characteristic of this lace.  What I don’t see is what she calls ‘ribbed or flat cutwork’, the little spider-like fillings, also no brides with looped picots.  But all such laces had variations.  This one has a nice bold look, well done, and aside from a little worn area in the center cloth, very good condition.

Comments:  An elaborate Carrickmacross guipure collar and I presume matching cuffs. Unusual feature of looped picots on the brides and motif edges, not just the outside edge. This gives the collar a rather frilly look, which is further enhanced by needlelace fillings. Someone really went the extra mile on this set.  I’ll rate the collar condition good; there are a few weaknesses in the muslin, but not too serious.  Can’t tell about the cuffs.

Comments:  An elaborate rectangular shawl of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine tulle. Needlelace fillings in the centers of flowers. The slightly rounded corners are a little unusual.  The design fills the space well, with lots of esprits in the vacant ground. The design center back is a little asymmetric and doesn’t quite match the rest of the piece, but that’s minor.  The motifs are also slightly loosely woven, and a larger size, but appropriate to the piece.   Various trivial holes, repairs, some spots, but with a piece like this that’s not very important. Generally very good condition.

Comments:  A roughly oval veil of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net. This piece does a lot with just a fairly simple design.  The dense flower and leaf pattern is worked in a narrow border all around the veil, and small esprits decorate the entire ground.  The work on the bobbinlace is quite fine, and stands well by itself without needlelace fillings. One repair, some minor discoloration and tiny holes. For a piece this large I’ll call it very good condition.

Although they are a bit long for a bonnet veil, so ‘apron’ might be appropriate.  Both show designs similar to the Blonde de Caen bobbinlaces.  The first one is quite bold with solid black designs, the second includes a greater variety of openwork stitches.  Both look needlerun, not tambour. Comments:  Short segment of a floral Bucks border. At least bucks is probable on this one, but note the use of kat stitch instead of the more common honeycomb as fillings. Comments:  A 2-part shawl of muslin applique on machine net, almost a mantilla form. The center triangular piece is edged with a deep flounce. The photos aren’t close enough to tell how the applique was done, tambour or overcast, so it’s hard to attribute an origin. I’m guessing Belgium. Comments:  An Italian figural bobbinlace, probably related to Cantu, but without the typical scrolling hooks and flowerheads. It is a large piece that looks a little bit thrown together with the nested rectangles and ovals. Not everything matches well. Still it’s a large bobbinlace work in a style that you don’t see too often. I see a few holes, and linen collectors are likely to nitpick about the lack of matching napkins (if there ever were any). Basically good condition.

Comments:  Ex. coll. Duchesse de Berry. A rectangular shawl of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net, with a few simple needlelace ornaments used as fillings.  The design looks naturalistic and rather impressive. The bobbinlace motifs appear well done with pretty good weaving technique. Condition looks good, there are a few well-done repairs in the tulle and scattered small openings.

Comments:  A cap back of Brussels bobbinlace with droschel ground, 1740-50. Note the figural bird and butterflies, similar to Ebay #330930001682. Dense design with finely worked motifs, note some snowflake variation fillings, and a little bridework, typical of this lace. A few minor holes and stains, overall good condition for the age.

Comments:  Wow. Hmmm.  A cap with reticella panels, very dense.  It sort of resembles patterns found in Giovanni Ostaus, “La verra perfettionne del disegno”, Venice 1557, but not exactly. That has some of the same diagonal bandwork and circular motifs, but also includes some picot work not seen here.  So one might call this Italian late 16th c. Or you can give up and say we really don’t know how to date pieces that might be this early, which is very true. Flanders did similar work, but much lighter in texture. The coif shape is not inconsistent with the period, and this might have been only part of a more formal headdress. The condition looks very good, especially if it really is this old. Maybe a little too good.

Comments:  A pair of joined Brussels bobbinlace lappets with droschel ground. ~1780’s.  I’ll assume the ground was worked around the motifs with threads carrying over on the back, not appliqued. The long length of these lappets is typical of the period. I have a set quite like these, with the same square tally and plaited fillings.  I think I see a few pinholes in the mesh, but overall they are in very good condition.

Comments:  A Milanese tape lace with plaited 6-pointed star ground. It has some delightful animals placed among the foliage. Interesting, one end of the piece has good decoration of the tape, the other is rather plain as if it were the work of another hand. Haven’t had time to see if the design is consistent through the entire length.  I would agree with the mid 18th c date, maybe a little earlier. Overall good condition, just a few small holes mainly at one end.

Comments:  A collar of Honiton Point lace, meaning bobbin-made motifs with a needle-made ground. Motifs are nicely done, a little snails/slugs, but definitely breaking out of that mode.  The design is quite dense, fairly symmetric, but a little haphazard. Actually rather charming. Comments:  A hat veil of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net.  Although the motifs are well done, it’s a fairly plain design with an inside flower band emphasizing the lower two corners.  No esprits in the ground. Condition appears very good, I see a few spots and seller cites very minor pulls.

Comments:  A Flemish bobbinlace border with droschel ground, around 1740.  The ground is not aligned exactly straight along the lace, but works around the motifs. This is sometimes a sign of English work, but it’s very difficult to decide between the two. This border has a rather dense design with slightly larger motifs, with a Brabant design feel. Seller sites slight damage to top edge in 2 places and several small holes – minor for the age of the piece. Overall good condition.

Comments: Filet embroidery or Lacis,  Fecit AD 1612  – Made in AD 1612. Maybe.  This kind of work was done extensively in Italy in the 20th century with some very fine pieces produced. Design range from historical copies to documentation of more modern events. I have one depicting the landing of Columbus. This one has some kind of armorial design in the center. The thread looks like linen, but one can’t really tell just from a photo. The embroidery is well done and very even. Early lacis work for a piece this size (see plate 94 in Levey’s “Lace: A History”, dated 1623), tended to be made up of smaller pieces which were more easily held in the hand for working. Unlike this piece. And the date in plate 94 is written as ‘ovs ad 1633’ with the ad letters combined in some kind of symbol.  I also wish there were closeups of the edging, that might give more hints.
I’m afraid the date of this piece is going to have to be decided by detailed thread analysis and dating.
Numerous small holes, especially in the lower right corner. Which for a truly early piece isn’t a problem.

Comments: I definitely agree with the seller in that the ‘museum’ made a mistake in de-accessioning these – but all the better for collectors.  I also think they tend toward Alençon with the réseau fin, and the well-done ‘mode’ fillings.  Yet the clothwork itself has a kind of fine Belgian needlelace feel.  Perhaps this is one of those examples of work done in Flanders and finished in France.  The condition is absolutely exceptional – occasional pinhole is trivial. It will be a long time before something of this quality hits the market again.

Comments:  Two short lengths of Honiton Point lace. That’s Honiton motifs with a needle-made ground. This one has figures of butterflies and birds, and is nicely done with good square tally fillings. Snails/slugs esthetic.  Unfortunate that it has been cut; the lace itself looks in very good condition.  One end of each has been finished, and I don’t think the two cut ends match.

Comments:  A Maltese lappet scarf and two sleeves. I don’t think the two sets match, but with Maltese things can always look fairly similar. Both are typical assemblies of Maltese crosses and flower motifs, with a little guipure work on the ends of the sleeves. Hard to tell the exact design of the sleeves.  Seller cites a few re-attachments needed, and some storage marks on the lappet scarf. Some minor fraying on the edges of the scarf. Overall both look in good condition.

Comments:  A narrow collar of Honiton guipure with figural butterfly work. This is a more advanced design piece, well out of the snails/slugs era.  Lots of raised work, good tallies, and note the delicately picoted brides.  It has the long feathery leaves and more naturalistic roses that you sometimes see in better pieces. Overall very good condition.  Same provenance as the two pieces reviewed above.

Comments:  An interesting piece with the great decorated clothwork that is so characteristic of the best early Milanese. But I hesitate to assign it there just yet.  The weaving is a bit loose, and the lower border isn’t quite as elaborate as one might expect in Milanese.  Yet I’m not quite sure where else to put it. Let me speculate Italian, but a later piece.  Seller cites some repairs and lots of replaced brides.  Basically good condition.

Comments:  A Duchesse de Bruxelles handkerchief.  The bobbinlace is a bit off the standard Duchesse designs, more delicate with smaller motifs- more in the Ghent style.  I especially like the rather open texture outside edge bordered with small buds.  Good Point de Gaze inserts, no raised work. Seller cites some age discoloration, but overall the lace looks in very good condition. Especially the Pt de Gaze mesh.

Comments:  A bit of the puzzle, and the seller does a good job in the discussion.  It looks like Maltese, with the sun roundels and the big teardrop shape against the neckline. Also mats of woven leaves.  But overall it’s a more delicate piece, and the outer plaited edge and the interface between the inner and outer layers is more Beds.  It is a bit of a mystery, but I’ll tentatively go with Beds. Neck edge and closing edges are a bit worn, overall good condition.

Comments:  A deep shawl collar of Irish Crochet.   Large motifs, appropriate to the size of the piece, with good raised work in flower centers.  Even some relief on the trefoils. Comments:  An interesting bertha of Duchesse, a few needle-made fillings, but no Point de Gaze.  It is a little on the Bruges side; no raised work, and plain cordonnet edges.  Still the design is above average, and the little picoted rings on the outer edge are great.  Seller says this has been washed and has some yellowing at the back neck edge. Overall good condition.

Comments:  The mesh here looks like a point ground, which would put it in the Lille category. The woven tally esprits in the ground, and the slightly feathery delicate appearance of the motifs look more like Beveren, although it lacks a straight lower edge.   I think it’s more a Lille or possibly Arras piece. Very outside chance it’s Tønder.  Several pulls and pinholes n the mesh, but basically good condition.

Comments:  Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw.  A border of Brussels bobbinlace with droschel ground. The repeat includes a bird with outspread wings. The motifs are very finely done with interesting lattices of bobbin fillings.  I see a few small holes here and there, but overall the condition of this piece is extremely good for the age, 3rd quarter 18th c.

Comments:  A Crinoline flounce of Brussels needlelace applique on machine net in a very collectible size.  Bobbinlace applique is seen all the time, but a piece of needlelace applique of this size and quality is rare. Excellent design, enhanced with all the esprits in the ground; definitely an high-end market product.  Seller cites 6 faint small rust stains, 6 small holes and pinpricks, one small tear at bottom. All that is minor for a piece of this importance, so I’ll rate the condition very good.

Comments:  I’ll go with a Bruges attribution on this, mainly because of the little islands in the bride work, and the rather large conventional, although very well done, motifs.  The focus in the photos is sometimes a bit off making it hard to see the weaving structure.  A little worn on the top edge, some broken brides, basically good condition. The leaves look like a plant we call arrowroot in the US, although it’s probably something else in the UK.  It still has that kind of continuous tape-like design that you often see in Devon work. Very minor defects, very good condition.

Comments:  A lappet scarf of Bruges Bloemwerk, finely worked and tightly woven.  Quite a bold, crisp design.  Seller cites a few pulls but basically very good condition.

Comments:  A fallcap of Honiton Point lace, that is, Honiton motifs with a needle-made ground.  The design looks a bit thrown together, with snails/slugs elements along with more sophisticated roses and thistles. Note the big feathery leaves in the endpieces, and the extensive girds of tally fillings. It’s a nice example, I’m just not entirely sure of what.  Looks in very good condition from the photos.

Comments:  A good example of a well done but middle market bobbinlace applique on machine net from Belgium. It does have a few accents, needlelace ring fillings and and esprits in the ground. And the condition appears very good, I don’t see any problems in the photos, and from what I can see the tulle looks intact. That’s unusual for this kind of lace.

Comments:  A short piece of Honiton, with an interesting design. The style is still rather snails/slugs, but the lower edge of scallops with good fillings brings this piece above the average. A few loose spots, some small stains, but overall good condition.

Comments:  A Honiton shawl collar with long front ends. Good naturalistic design of roses and leaves, breaking out of the snail/slugs mode.  It’s a little hard to see details with all the sunlight streaming in the photos, but from what I can see it looks in very good condition.

Comments:  A Duchesse fan on the Bruges side with standard design motifs a bit loosely woven.  It is very complete with carved sticks and a tassel. Quite large, the lace is a little aged in color, and in good condition. One repair to the tassel loop, the rest of the fan structure looks intact.

Comments:  A large fan of Carrickmacross applique mounted on Mother of Pearl/abalone sticks. An impressive design, very well worked with some nicely done guipure accents.  Typical looped picots around the edges. Figural Carrickmacross comes along now and then, but the symmetric urns in this piece are exceptionally well done.  One repaired stick. The lace itself looks in very good condition, I don’t see any problems from the photos.

Comments:  A Milanese-type bobbin tape lace, probably Italian. I’m guessing 1st half of the 18th century, from the style of the brides. Could be a bit later. The flowerhead terminations are starting to develop into what eventually will become Cantu lace.  Seller cites a few broken brides and some storage marks.  Overall very good condition.

Comments:  Yet a third Milanese guipure bobbinlace border, most similar to the first one from this seller described above.  This one looks a little more delicate, but still the same doubled back tape with 5 petal flowerheads and picoted brides.  Looks in very good condition.

Starting Price: 14.95 GBP

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments:  Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw. According to the attached note: “Pair of cuffs. A narrow band of linen, embroidered in satin stitch on both sides in white flors silk, with a pattern of conventional tulip and rose blossoms. Insertions and edging of coarse thread pillow-made lace with wavy tape-like pattern. size 12-1/4 in x 17 1/4. Austrian (South Slavonian) 18th century. Compare South Kensington Museum 181 to 186a 1887.  (P E ?) Collection Bought at Vienna 1886 6 guilden each”.
I don’t know whose handwriting this is – probably Pat’s although it is curious she would refer to the ‘South Kensington Museum’ rather than the VA. So it could be much earlier. This provenance is wonderful, and the pieces are in very good condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller georginanntiques, London, United Kingdom
Comments:  A rectangular scarf of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine tulle.  A fairly simple design of a simple rose repeat, and note the extensive esprits in the ground.  The condition appears very good, in fact exceptionally good. This is very unusual.

Offered by: Ebay seller georginanntiques, London, United Kingdom
Comments:  A Point de Gaze fan with tassel, box, and Mother of Pearl sticks with gold inlay. And an attached coronet on the guardstick. The lace has a naturalistic design, no raised work (which is not a problem) and some good decorative ‘mode’ fillings. Everything points to a Russian maker. One small repair to the lace and a few pinholes. Also some darkening due to gluing the lace on the sticks.  Some of the upper bone sticks replaced.  Overall good condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments:  A collar or dress front of Honiton guipure. Snails/slugs esthetic. It actually has some machine made tape just inside the neckline and just inside the outer border of flowers. You see this occasionally and it obviously speeds up the work.  The handmade motifs look a little rushed. But the overall condition of this piece looks very good. A nice combination example of Honiton and machine tape.

Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments:  A Point de Gaze lappet scarf with bulbous ends  of a dense floral design.. No raised work, and no special ‘mode’ fillings. It all depends on the contrast between the clothwork and Point de gaze ground inserts.  Nicely done, and aside from some staining particularly on one end, in very good condition.  Part of a museum de-accession.

Comments:  A fallcap of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net.  Nice design of a central flower spray and a string of cartouches around the edges. I like the grid pattern in the lappet ends. One repair to the tulle in the headpiece and seller cites a few spots. Overall very good condition.  Part of a museum de-accession.

Comments:  A deep shawl collar of silk Maltese.  A good standard design – woven leaves formed into ‘wheat ears’ around the neck. A center section of Maltese crosses and woven leaf flowers. The outer edge alternates crosses and flowers.  Seller cites minor loose threads, overall very good condition.
