Comments: Very unusual. I’ve never seen a cap of Point d’Alençon before like this. Unfortunately the measurements aren’t given, so I’ll just assume it is a baby’s cap as the seller says. The design looks appropriate to a cap; I don’t see any joins, although a lot of the photos are quite fuzzy.  Brides tortillée ground, with lots of brode work in the rather sparse motifs. minimal mode fillings.  The condition looks very good, although again, some photos are a bit fuzzy and it’s hard to tell.

Comments: A glazed earthenware figure of a French lacemaker. It is attributed to Géo Martel and Gabriel Fourmaintraux, with the specific artist being Achille Blot, sometime in the 1920s. The mark GM is on the bottom of the piece. Then again I’ve seen the same figure attributed to Fives-Lille at the De Bruyn Factory ca.1890-1900. I’m wondering if this one is a slightly later work – it doesn’t seem to have quite the detail as others I’ve seen. Still, it isn’t found very often.  There is a large chip on the bonnet, otherwise good condition.

Comments: What I generally look for in identifying 18th c Devon laces are large filling areas but not a lot of variety in the fillings themselves, motifs that look like they might have been worked for a long time thus losing some sharpness and evolving into a more serpentine technique. Also certain technical details in the raised work, and a ground that often conforms to the motifs rather than the perfect straightness of Belgian laces. I think this is a good candidate for Devon.  Very good condition for the age, and I do agree with the seller, there seem to be a join midway. Other very minor defects.

Comments: 19th-20th c Point d’Angleterre always seems to have beautifully done bobbin motifs on an equally well done point de gaze ground.  Needlelace ‘modes’ or fillings are also typical, more or less extensive.  This is a good piece, the modes aren’t quite as exuberant as one often finds and the motifs are a bit large – but it has nice raised bobbin work and an interesting design. Almost reminds me of Gros Point with the large flower heads. Condition appears very good from the photos.

Comments: A later 18th century pair of Argentan lappets.  The photos aren’t close enough to tell if the brides are buttonholed or twisted.  This is a simple design, just one meandering trail down the center with sprigs in the ground a a little border with minimal fillings, and some réseau ordinare. I find it an effective pattern done quite nicely. One obvious hole and I can’t tell much about the joined area. Overall good condition.

Comments: A good, collectible border of Duchesse de Bruxelles; the design definitely above average. This is a high end market piece.  I like the work on the bobbinlace, especially the nice rose design. The point de gaze inserts are flat with some unusual rings forming an oval, and note how they go down all they way to the edge of the piece, mirroring the bobbinlace leaf designs. The needlelace design is a bit plain, but it is well designed to blend in perfectly with the lower part of the flounce. Very good condition, I don’t see any problems from the photos.

Comments: A long crinoline flounce of Brussels application on machine net.  Note, Ebay item 160853660516 posts a shorter length of this same pattern.  It shows a good design, with well done motifs – note the openwork in the flowers for a little bit of shading effect.  Seller says some flowers are needle-made, but not enough closeup views to tell for sure. Some needlelace rings in the ribbon-like sections, and good esprits in the upper ground. As a work of art it isn’t quite as over the top as it could be, but the length is amazing. So is the condition, which counts for so much in these machine appliques. Seller does cite a few openings in the net at top, but I don’t see them in the photos.

Comments:  It might be Beds, but I think I see linen thread, and the design looks more Cluny than Beds.   Particularly the raised tallies on halfstitch in the lappet roundels, and the very long chains of woven leaves. It could be a local English Cluny variation; lace labeled ‘Cluny’ was marketed alongside Beds.  Seller indicates the piece has been washed – condition looks very good.

Comments: Raised Venetian lace of this small scale is sometimes known as Rosepoint in contrast to the larger Gros Point. The flow of the design looks intact in some parts, but disjoint especialy toward the ends. Most of these laces were reworked from earlier peices, and this doesn’t seem to be an exception. Still, it is a good example and I see some well-done sculpted raised borders.
