Ebay Alerts! Eleven items – April 12, 2012

http://tinyurl.com/6wuylez Vintage Ladies Wedding Hand Embroidered Brussels Lace Hankie
Size:  ~13″ square
Starting Price: $24.99
Auction ends: Apr 14, 2012 11:18:35 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller judyshoper, Fontana CA, United States
Comments: The light background of this photo makes it very hard to see the lace, and also makes it look dirtier than it probably is. It is a Point de Gaze handkerchief with I think some raised petal roses, hard to tell.  Definitely a higher end market piece, and the condition is probably very good. Seller says unused, but it’s hard for me to offer an opinion again because of the light background.  Some nicely done fillings, and I think the edge picots are connected, which is the mark of a particular although unknown manufacturer.

   Sold for $422.55, 7 bidders.

Size:  2″ x 66″
Starting Price: $45.00
Auction ends: Apr 15, 2012 08:40:26 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: The narrow Brussels application on machine net, all bobbinlace motifs. The work is quite fine, and note the esprits in the ground. Condition looks very good – I think I see one or two tiny holes in the net in the last photo, minor.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/73y8ujm ANTIQUE LACE-CIRCA 1700’s,VALENCIENNE LACE
Size:

Starting Price: $225.00
Auction ends: Apr 15, 2012 09:19:48 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: I think this Valenciennes border is complete, but both top and bottom edges have been modified so it’s a little hard to tell. It is a beautiful design with fond de neige ground, probably around 1730 or so. You almost see antecedents in some of the finer earlier Dutch ‘Vandyke’ style laces, I think someone needs to look into a possible connection here. The edges are a problem. I think someone has added a machine picot edge to the bottom scallops, and who knows what is going on at the header edge.  There are a few small holes in the lace proper. Overall it’s a great design, and perhaps the objectionable additions could be removed.

   No bids.

Size:
Front neck to edge 9″, neckline 14″
Starting Price: 20.00 GBP
Auction ends: Apr 15, 2012 10:10:03 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: Wish there were better closeups here.  I like the interesting motifs that stand by themselves, breaking away from the trefoil connection so often seen in Irish Crochet.  Note the square picoted ground, probably not Clones knots, but no photos close enough to really tell. The motifs are nicely worked with some raised work. Some stains along then neckline, otherwise very good condition.

Sold for 20.00 GBP, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/7ugoxrz Antique/vintage hand made Honiton lace dress front
Size:
Neck front to edge 4.5″, width across front 8″
Starting Price: 8.00 GBP
Auction ends: Apr 15, 2012 10:33:44 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A Honiton dress front with attached standing neckpiece. Snails/slugs design with an unornamented bar ground. What I find interesting about this piece, and I’ve seen it before, is that there appears to be two rows of machine made tapes just inside the collar. Condition is a little strained, a few detached brides, and a curved motif gone wrong at the lower right side of the frontpiece. Nothing particularly serious.

Sold for 13.50 GBP, 3 bidders.

Size:
19 cm deep at the back (I assume that’s the square frontpiece part)
Starting Price: 28.00 GBP
Auction ends: Apr 15, 2012 11:07:34 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller linskapet, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway DG6 4UU, United Kingdom
Comments: This one of those fun, odd pieces that gives Irish Crochet unexpected interest, just when you think you’ve seen it all. The heavily raised flowers are tightly woven against a very regular ground. Note the bellflower overlapping the edge structure on one of the shoulder pieces – a little worrisome. The seller cites those unqualified words I shudder to hear, ‘freshly laundered’. It does look nicely white and flat from the photos, and I don’t see any obvious damage.

Sold for 28.00 GBP, 1 bidder.

Size:
~40″ square
Starting Price: 14.99 GBP
Auction ends: Apr 15, 2012 12:08:57 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lacisfair, Surrey, United Kingdom
Comments: A small square Maltese cloth with a central star pattern. Note the alternating Cross and woven leaf grids around the center – this is echoed in the internal designs. There is some more ambitious guipure work near the center.  A few loose threads and pale spots, overall good condition.

Sold for 75.22 GBP, 6 bidders.

Offered by: Ebay seller redpinewood, Sunny Bournemouth, United Kingdom
Comments: This seller is showing a number of these pieces, and I thought the fish was so well made that I’d take a closer look. I thought I’d ask her about the name of the maker, but I’m sure she will disclose that to the buyer. This is an example of the revival of Honiton that occurred in the 1970’s, and gets a lot of respect from me. Very nice piece.

Sold for 1.00 GBP, 1 bidder.

Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd,RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: Here’s something for the tatters.  Condition is excellent, apparently due to having been framed for a long while. There is general age discoloration. Some of the motifs are tied together, and some appear to be joined, so this could qualify as a transitional piece.  I think it has a very nice impact.

   Sold for $79.00, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7hpbvwv ANTIQUE LACE- EARLY FINE POINT DE FRANCE LACE

Starting Price: $150.00
Auction ends: Apr 16, 2012 07:32:36 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: I was all set to call this Point de France until I saw some of the vines trails up close. Usually in the earlier laces these are laid down and buttonholed inside. Here they seem to to have a spaced buttonhole edge on both sides, which I associate with later copies, or perhaps a reworking of an earlier piece. Seems to be a mixture of the two techniques. The raised work has beautiful picots which certainly look French, but maybe not quite as much sculpting as I would expect. And the design is difficult to follow – usually you can trace out something. I’m going out on a limb here and say this is a reworked piece.

   No bids.

Auction ends: 3 days 22  hours from 6:28 PM MST. End time on Buy-it-now pieces is not often given in Ebay listing, and I’m tired of estimating.
Offered by: Ebay seller marthyross, Manchester, United Kingdom
Comments: Only one impressive looking photo on this listing, and I’m unsure whether this is really tambour or a Brussels bobbinlace application. I’ll guess tambour from the little I can see. Seller cites one small repair and some pinpricks.

  Unsold as of 4/22/12.

The LaceNews Channel on YouTube – Update for March 2012

http://www.youtube.com/user/lacenews

Summary:
One hundred videos and five more playlists were added in the March 2012 update. Six previously listed videos are no longer available. That brings the current video total to 2,250 in 90 playlists.  The sorting convention for playlist videos is first by post author, then by date, then alphabetically by title. An exception is the Fashion playlist, which is only sorted by date. A pdf of all videos in their sorted order for each playlist can be downloaded at Playlist_Mar_2012.  If  you are into playing with databases, you can also download my original EXCEL file at Playlist_Mar_2012.  The EXCEL file has three sections – first a listing of all the videos in their sorted order with the new additions shown in red. Deletions are shown in green (the author can delete a post, declare it private, or an account can close, or maybe I’m correcting a past mistake). Second, a list of just the new additions.  Finally, there is a summary of activity in each playlist by month.  The pdf file now only has the total and new additions pages; the summary is getting too long to fit in the standard pdf format, so it is only available in the EXCEL file.

The playlist Update_March_2012, which is now the first one in the ‘Featured’ page in the new YouTube format, contains all the new videos added for March. The order is the same as in the pdf file. The Update_February_2011 playlist is still there, and the Update_January_2011 playlist has been deleted. Videos being collected for the April update are in the playlist Z-Update.

If you see something that is missing, or if you have suggestions for better organization, please write to lacenews@gmail.com.

Newly added playlists include:
No new playlists were added, although I did split the two Spanish Bobbinlace ones into three roughly equal length playlists.

New videos added to the collection:
Below I summarize the number of new videos added to existing playlists. In parentheses, I am also adding the number of videos in a playlist that were deleted outside of my control during the month. Note, I don’t always check every playlist for deletions with each monthly update – usually just the ones that have new additions.

Notes on the format:
– As noted above, I split the two Spanish bobbinlace playlists into three, since I was hitting the 200 video limit on the first one.
– I changed the name of the ‘Drawnwork’ playlist to ‘Drawnwork, Pulled Thread Embroidery, and Whitework’, since I’ve been seeing a lot of drawnwork that’s actually pulled thread work.

Here are a few new interesting things:
– The featured video is now a Nanduti piece, I think it’s a talent contest with a contestant singing something with a lace-theme. I’ll try to track down the words of the song.
– Did you know there is a Puncetto museum in Fobello, Italy?  See ‘Museo del Puncetto a Fobello’ in playlist Italy – Puncetto.
– Check out the ‘RustiKate’s Speed Tatting Method’ in the Tatting – Needle Tatting playlist. Impressive.
– For those who speak French, there’s a new video ‘Alencon-Temps’ in the France – Needlelace playlist showing interviews with several individual lacemakers.
– ECGIproject in the Italy – Bobbinlace playlist has four amazing documentary videos on Cantu lace; I’ll make one the featured video next month.  They aren’t well documented, so I need to do some investigation.
– Just what you need, more videos!  I’m now setting up a LaceNews site on the Dailymotion website, where a lot of French lacemakers are posting videos.  I’ll get that organized for the April update.

http://tinyurl.com/6rkthl2 Antique Chantilly lace France
Size: 57 cm x 200 cm
Starting Price: $54.99
Auction ends: Apr 10, 2012 06:20:05 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mylittleboyke, Borgloon, Belgium
Comments: An intriguing piece, although as a collector, I’m looking for better photos. Something that shows the entire width of the piece, with at least one repeat of the pattern. I want to know more exactly what I’d be buying. With a Chantilly piece like this I’m always looking for handmade signs, in particular well defined half stitch that looks handmade, crisp honeycomb filings, and definite signs of the piece having been made in strips joined together with racroc stitch – Ebay’s new magnification capability helps a lot here. Very long lengths of Chantilly are typical, with some fairly standard widths (10-15″, and a larger 20-24″ are pretty common – this is the larger size). This one looks good. The design has large elements that fill a lot of the space. No esprits in the upper ground. There aren’t enough photos to let me judge condition, but seller cites only a few tiny holes.

   Sold for $127.50, 4 bidders.

Size: 7″ x 220″
Starting Price: 9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Apr 10, 2012 12:00:25 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller baraud, Newton Abbot, United Kingdom
Comments: The Blair House sale held March 14-15, 2012, had only 3 lots of lace, each with many individual pieces. A lot of them have been showing up on Ebay recently, including some of good quality. This is a Point d’Alençon flounce of exceptional size. The work is quite good, although the design is not too inspiring. Looks like a bride tortillee ground, and some nice jour fillings. But I find the thick stems and leaves, despite the diamond pattern decoration, a bit clumsy. I don’t see any support for the picots, horsehair or otherwise, and I’m wondering if this is an Argentan piece (Argentan makers sometimes cite this as a characteristic of their lace). Condition looks very good, seller cites some small repairs, but no damage.

Sold for 269.56 GBP, 8 bidders.

Starting Price: $9.99
Auction ends: Apr 11, 2012 10:57:15 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester., Worcs., United Kingdom
Comments: A Brussels application on machine net hat veil. The bobbin motifs are nicely made, with good raised borders and a few needlelace rings used as fillings.  The piece is finished on all sides – often they had a header at the top that one could thread a ribbon through, but I don’t see that here. A few small holes in the net, but that seems minor – overall good condition. Note the scattered sprigs in the upper part, nice. A good middle market piece.  The machine made net drapes so nicely.

   Sold for $21.50, 5 bidders.

Starting Price: $49.99
Auction ends: Apr 11, 2012 18:03:52 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: A flounce of Brussels Application on machine net. A very similar piece sold last July http://tinyurl.com/7fh4ol2, and the measurements on this one are slightly shorter. The design of bows and flowers is well done, definitely a higher end product. Some nice needlelace fillings in the open spaces of the bows. Seller cites age discoloration and fraying on the unfinished ends – overall very good condition.

   Sold for $147.50, 8 bidders.

Starting Price: $99.99
Auction ends: Apr 11, 2012 19:24:34 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller miladyslinens, Sunny in Gardiner, Maine, United States
Comments: I normally don’t do much with table and bed linens in these reviews, but this set of placemats illustrates where the market was taking Point de Paris in late 19th-early 20th c Belgium. The putti figures are nicely designed for a dinner theme. The lace edgings of the mats are fairly deep and well executed. Seller cites excellent condition, although there are limited photos so difficult to judge completely.

   Sold for $405.00, 5 bidders.

Offered by: Ebay seller ourhut, near Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Comments: Another Blair House piece. Lots of shadows on the closeups – this is a problem in photographing black laces. Diffuse light helps, along with a more intensely colored background.  The piece is unusual for the way the top edge is finished – normally it’s just a plain edge with an additional engrelure. Nice design, although I find it a bit ‘bottom-heavy’, meaning very large motifs on the bottom don’t quite balance the small motifs at the top. Still, and impressive presentation. Seller doesn’t comment much on condition other than to say it appears unused.  Looks very good from what I can see.

Offered by: Ebay seller sasperilla69, Sunny Wales, United Kingdom
Comments: A 19th c English horseshoe pillow stand, meant for a large square pillow. It looks in excellent condition. Not sure if those are screws on the top of the back rail holding the legs in place.  It does look a bit refinished – not quite as worn as many I’ve seen.  They are also stronger than they look, although balance with a really heavy pillow depends a lot on the lacemaker’s lap position.  Seller will ship to the US.

Comments: A 19thc Honiton handkerchief, good design far away from snails/slugs mode. It has some birds among the well executed roses, bellflowers and leaves.  Good ~rectangular picoted mesh.  Condition looks very good, I see a few small brown spots, quite minor.

Comments: A 19th century monogrammed Brussels application on machine net handkerchief. Monogram is EMB for Eleanor Margaret Burra, 1847-93,  excellent provenance.  The lace itself seems in very good condition, seller cites an occasional small hole in the net (look left of center at the very top of the 2nd photo).  The design is nice but a little conventional.

Comments: An impressive looking Maltese deep flounce with only one exposed section showing some discoloration, if I read the description correctly. Wonder how well that would clean up? Excellent guipure and leaf work. Not everything is shown, but it does have an unused look to it.

Comments: A semi-circular hat veil of Chantilly. Again suffering from the shadow effect in the photographs. The design is small and elegant along the borders, lots of esprit in the central ground.  Looks in very good condition, I don’t see any problems in the photos.

Comments: This seller always has nice material. The lace is Brussels application on machine net, small, well-defined motifs in an interesting design. Great butterflies. The lace does seem to be backed with another piece of net that slops over the edges a bit at the top.  I do get the feeling that the MOP parts of the sticks are a bit big for the lace – and along with the extra backing, I wonder if this was reworked at some point. Comes with original box. Condition appears very good, I can’t see any problems from the photos.

Comments: A Point de Gaze handkerchief, no raised work, excellent quality. Not much in the way of jour fillings, but what is there complements the design well. Attachment to the center cloth is integral to the design. The flowers and leaves could be a bit more naturalistic, but overall this is an impressive piece. Condition looks very good, maybe one slightly loose ring just below center left, otherwise it looks untouched. Just a few unimportant small spots.

Comments: Great box. Cool sticks, nicely intact. A Brussels Duchesse fan leaf with one major Point de Gaze insert in the center, raised petal rose. The bobbinlace is a little conventional, but I like the contrast with the large area of needlelace. Condition looks very good, I don’t see any problems.  Needs a darker ground for the photograph – photographing white pieces on a light ground sharpens every little defect and often gives a piece a dirty look that isn’t really there.

Comments: A Maltese handkerchief with extensive guipure work and a kind of spider ground. These motifs are a bit unusual for a piece this size – and it is quite small. I think it’s whiter than it looks fro the main photographs.  Seller cites one small break on an edge, otherwise good condition. Note the silk center, typical of Maltese handkerchiefs.

Comments: There have been quite a few of these deep Irish Crochet collars lately, and this one is quite nice.  Tightly worked motifs, raised work,  and very good condition. The picots are not Clones knots, but clusters of double stitch.  A few breaks in some brides, nothing serious.

Comments: A border of Point de Gaze, no raised work, but that’s fine. Good design, nicely worked. Reminds me a lot of the previous handkerchief, spare use of jour fillings. Some holes in the net, difficult to repair, and a little spotting but generally good condition.

Comments: An interesting shawl or mantilla. I’m thinking Italian with all that tapework, that’s not really a Maltese characteristic. Or perhaps an Easter European piece, perhaps Idrija? It’s very bold and works well. Seller cites some age discoloration, a few small spots, and some broken brides. Valued enough to have a few small repairs. Generally good condition.

   Sold for $373.00, 3 bidders.

Offered by: Ebay seller quiltlover, Plymouth,MN, United States
Comments: This is not Duchesse, it’s a lovely Point d’Angleterre piece, later 19th c.  Delicate bobbinmade motifs with Point de Gaze mesh, extensive needlelace fillings.  One of the very best Belgian laces.  The quality of this kind of lace can vary a lot – this one isn’t the absolute top quality, but definitely a high end product.  And finer than it looks; keep in mind it’s only 6″ wide. Condition is very good, I don’t see any problems from the photos.  It’s a beautiful, collectible length.

Comments: Another exceptional example from this seller, Point d’Alençon in an excellent length and width. Alençon was known as a ‘Winter’ lace, rather heavy with all the formal cordonnet work and horsehair stabilization.  This piece is a meant to be ruffled, with the more vertical design. The toilé is quite open, a mark of a slightly later piece. Nice fillings, and beautiful technique all around. Seller cites a little age discoloration, minor. I think I see a few repairs to the net here and there, very well done. Look for the whiter parts in the upper net in the photos, I think those are repairs/replacements.

It is a small offering, but appears to have some high quality items. Lots of fans, a nice tatted fallcap (lot 83), a square Brussels application shawl (lot 90). Lot 92 has lots of modern equipment mixed with an older bobbin winder and some material from the North Bucks Association.
Condition reports can be requested separately for all lots.

http://tinyurl.com/6urfbf2 SUPER LONG RUN 5.5YDS 2.5″ X 198″ 19th C HAND MADE LACE FROM BLAIR HOUSE
Size: 2.5″ X 5.5 yds
Starting Price: 9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Apr 03, 2012 13:10:52 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller ourhut, near Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Comments: Had to stare at this one long and hard. At first I thought it was an elaborate Dresden drawnwork, since it was hard to reconcile that heavy gimp and openwork with Mechlin. Wish there were closer photos. I’ll go with a mid 18th c Mechlin, but the really heavy gimp is still throwing me. Looks in good shape, some pulls in the mesh, but not enough detailed photos to really get a good look at the whole thing. Interesting piece.

Sold for 328.00 GBP, 6 bidders.

Auction ends: Apr 03, 2012 13:13:44 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller ourhut, near Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Comments: A Brussels application on machine net border.  Nicely defined bobbinlace motifs, just a few tiny needlelace accents in flower centers. Note the esprits in the ground 0 look like needlelace rings. The net behind the engrelure looks a little funny, like it might have been cut. Overall good condition, maybe a few pulls and a little staining.

Sold for 32.00 GBP, 7 bidders.

Auction ends: Apr 03, 2012 13:20:08 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller ourhut, near Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Comments: Another Brussels application on machine net border. Some of the photos in this listing seem to belong to the item I reviewed just before this one, I don’t think there is more than one lace offered here.  This border is a bit more elaborate, nice sprigs in the ground, and some interesting swag work with needlelace fillings on the lower edge. Good detail on the bobbin motifs. Condition appears quite sharp, almost unused. Just a few brown spots.  All these recent pieces are from the Blair House sale – that doesn’t mean they were ever used by Blair House occupants.  I highly recommend the Lovejoy Mysteries (books, not the TV series) for anyone who collects antiques. Read “The Tartan Sell” on the subject of sales in stately homes.

Sold for 26.00 GBP, 2 bidders.

Auction ends: Apr 03, 2012 18:05:17 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller burtonbutn, Lansing, Michigan, United States
Comments: A silk triangular Maltese shawl, quite impressive. Normally you find these in cotton. It has the typical layered Maltese construction, with a big roundel in the center and two smaller ones on the outer points.  Naturalistic guipure work incorporating the St. John’s cross, with woven leaves used both as ground and filling stitches. A few minor loose spots, and I think I see one repair, also minor. Overall very good condition.

Comments: This is the 2nd Point de Gaze butterfly we’ve had from this seller, see #110837028694, it looks identical. Condition appears very good. Not sure if this is a resale, or if the seller has more than one of these.

Comments: A Maltese shawl collar.  Note the unusual leaves raised on top of some of the flowers and leaves.  The square ground and the lattice of leaves down the lappets are unusual. One damaged area in the main collar, and a few breaks here and there.

Comments: Two borders of Chantilly, same pattern, listed separately. The design is fairly simple; a kind of chain link border with flower sprays and esprits in the upper ground. The photos on the first piece seem to show some wear along a racroc line in the first photo. Otherwise both seem in very good condition.

Comments: A handkerchief edged with Honiton applique on machine net. Large flowers around the edges, smaller sprigs inside. Note the nice attachment to the center cloth. A little snails/slugs, but overall a good presentation. Some brown marks on the cloth, otherwise very good condition.

Comments: I’ve never seen this before, a reticella butterfly.  Simple, well made, and unique. A few frayed threads that probably could be cut of, especially on the right wing. Perhaps a Cyprus piece.  Good overall condition.

Comments:  Brussels Application on machine net handkerchief, good higher end quality. This certainly began life as a great piece, but the numerous holes in the net don’t help it now. Very difficult to repair. Fine work on the bobbin motifs, needlelace used here and there as accent. I like the way the lace is attached to the center cloth.

Comments:  Seller is willing to cut this perfectly good Chantilly flounce into meter length segments.  I can’t say much for condition on the parts not shown, but there does seem to be a lot of repair with pieces of machine made Chantilly.  Note the round flower at the lower left in the first photo, and the discontinuity center bottom in the middle photo.  Wish there were more photos.  I don’t know what to say here.

Comments:  Another piece of this pattern, 61″ long, sold last June, same seller http://tinyurl.com/6tvlpwq. I called it Italian Abruzzi then, and I’ll stick with that now. Seller cites a few scattered openings, overall good condition.

Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments:  This kind of looped tape lace can be found in Flanders and Italy, also Russia (e.g., Yelts). This one is not quite as fine as you find in Flanders, and has an Abruzzi feel, so I’ll go with Italian.  An  unusual piece – a bit primitive, but quite bold. Seller cites some scattered damage, which I can’t exactly make out from the photos.

   Sold for $39.99, 1 bidder.

Starting Price: $95.00
Auction ends: Apr 05, 2012 10:54:40 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments:  I don’t think this piece has been altered. The square mesh is found in early 18th c Milanese, and the motifs are breaking up from their tape-lace ancestry to a more pieced technique.   Good tight work on the tape, minimal use of openings in the clothwork, also a later sign. Seller cites a few minor openings – looks in good condition from the photos given.

Auction ends: Apr 05, 2012 10:55:51 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments:  Another Milanese piece, wish there were more of it.  The mesh is a more regular plaited type, sill fit in between motifs rather haphazardly.  Again a characteristic of late 17th-early 18th c Milanese.  The motifs are more open and connected than the previous item.  Scattered holes throughout the mesh – the motifs look tightly woven and intact.

Comments:  This seller has listed several Vologda pieces, see #120872213960, #120872221460, and there may be more in the future. They appear new, although there is no discussion of exactly where they are made.  As with much of this kind of lace, the technique is precise and the designs quite good. Comments:  I think it’s a narrow rectangular scarf, The lace is Duchesse de Bruges. No needlelace, just a nice combination of floral elements in pieced bobbinlace. Good raised work and excellent technique. Overall very good condition, I don’t see any problems from the photos.

$71.00, 3 bidders, reserve not met.

Comments:  Advice to sellers – never say something is damaged in the title of your listing. It’s a signal to the buy to pass you by. Be as honest as you can in the listing, but let the seller decide. I find this piece in overall good condition, maybe a few frayed threads and spots, nothing serious. It’s a good Duchesse de Bruges dress front, late 19th c. I like the border more than the inner part, but that’s probably just the transition from the more formal outside to the more scattered florals inside.

Comments: An all-to-short length of Point de Gaze, probably 3rd quarter 19th c. No raised work, which is no problem because of the wonderful use of fillings. The design elements are not that refined, but put together this is a very pleasing piece. And condition appears very good, only one tiny hole near the engrelure 11″ from one end.

Offered by: Ebay seller greatlace, Paris – Palm Beach, United States
Comments: Probably 2nd quarter 18thc border, I’d call it Valenciennes with a 5-hole ground. Not untypical for Val at this period, when lacemakers experimented with several different grounds before settling on the round-hole mesh. There is some nice shading of the motifs. The picoted edge is a later addition – hard to tell if it’s been cut down. The swirling design seems complete, but maybe a little truncated on the picot edge.  A few small holes and some fraying, minor. One join.

   Sold for $120.00, 4 bidders.

Comments: A Chantilly parasol cover, probably Belgian. Good, fairly elaborate spoked design, and I think it’s finer than it looks. Wish there were more closeups – I had to focus in a lot to convince myself that the rings have honeycomb edges, a handmade characteristic. Condition appears very good, I don’t see any major problems from the photos.  I don’t think it’s helped much by the beige ground in the photo.

Offered by: Ebay seller mamynet46, Waterloo, Belgium
Comments: A Belgian pillow with triangular base. Seller says it is from Bruges. It does not have the bobbin extension piece.  One drawer in the base. The red cover with green tape is undoubtedly an addition of the lacemaker – these were usually covered in white canvas, and the worker put on whatever cover they liked.  It looks like a good, serviceable piece of equipment, in very good condition for the age.

Comments: Modern Binche handkerchiefs tend to be small, and this is no exception. The design is a bit large and a little more abstract from what one normally thinks of this lace. A puzzling piece, I’d put it later 19th c.  Condition appears very good, I don’t see any problems from the photos.

Comments: A Point de Gaze shawl collar. The lace is flat and nicely done with interesting fillings.  Good naturalistic design.  The condition appears exceptional.  I see a few tiny pinholes in the net, but negligible for a piece of this quality.

Comments: A Duchesse handkerchief, no needlelace.  Note the well defined motifs, with good raised work defining the veins and flower petals.  Each motif is a well-made product in itself, with the design through into high relieve by the very simple, open bride ground.  It almost has a Ghent flavor.  The condition is very good – looks fresh from the pillow.

Comments: A Chantilly shawl collar. This form was made well into the 20th century, so is hard to date. The work looks fine enough that it could be a French product. Very naturalistic flower and leaf depictions. Seller notes one repair in the last photo, but otherwise very good condition.

Comments: Brussels Duchesse with a twist.  I love the needlelace inserts with the central jour medallion surrounded by little sprigs in a kind of wreath design. And the curlicue motifs below the bobbinlace flowers are great. The bobbinlace clothwork is quite tightly done, and the overall effect very pleasing. Comments: An interesting tape applique on machine lace – this looks like machine tape with some embroidery on the net for fillings. Quite an elaborate piece, could easily be mistaken for bobbinlace motifs.  Condition appears very good. Seller calls it ‘Princess’ lace, but I don’t know if that trade term applies to this specific effort. Seller cites age discoloration and some tiny breaks and separations, all minor.

   Sold for $376.00, 6 bidders.

Comments: Filet can be very good – design, embroidery, a solid net. When you see really good pieces they are worthy of any collection.  These probably come from Italy, where much of the best work was done.  A few breaks, but nothing major.
