I can’t find much information on the lace event other than the poster from the Ibn Al Baytar site. It is an event with many different textile groups participating, quilters in particular are talking about it on their sites.

Ebay Alerts! Eleven items – February 2, 2012

http://tinyurl.com/7gdyv53 OLD PILLOW BOBBIN VENETIAN LACE HONITON VALENCIENNES BRUSSELS HANDKERCHIEF HANKY
Size: ~9″ square
Starting Price: 9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Feb 04, 2012 11:41:07 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller clarissa32, Horncastle, Lincolnshire, United Kingdom
Comments: The linen on this piece has some pulled thread embroidery, which I’m not sure I quite like in combination with the very good Binche/Point de Fee border.  The lace goes overboard with the partridge eye ground, and there are many well made small leaves bordering the abstract motifs. No figural work, unfortunately. This is a small piece, which means the lace is more delicate than it looks from the photos. Condition appears very good, although I’m worried about the effect of the lace top and bottom along the fold lines. Not clear from the photos.

   42.00 GBP, 7 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7zhm345 Stunning Antique Silk Irish Crochet Collar
Size: 18″ wide, 10″ long
Starting Price: $79.00
Auction ends: Feb 04, 2012 14:18:17 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller calexa2010, Coupeville, Washington, United States
Comments: I’d guess we see silk Irish Crochet at a ratio of about 20:1 with regular Irish Crochet. And the silk versions are a bit more limited in motifs than cotton or linen – the shamrocks along the edge of this piece are very common. What is unusual is the big tasseled rosette in the middle – it has a French feel and is slightly off-color. Might be a later addition, but it does appear to be made of silk. Condition on this piece appears very good. Could probably use a little re-blocking.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/6wbhn2h Antique 19th Century Point D Gaz Lace Hand Fan
Size: 13.5″ x 26″, I assume that’s the case.
Starting Price: $1,295.00
Auction ends: Feb 04, 2012 15:03:40 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller great_stuff432, Odessa, TX, United States
Comments: An exceptional Point de Gaze fan. Normally I’m not fond of mother-of-pearl sticks, but the simplicity here sets off the complexity of the lace very well. The design, the shading effects, the closeness of the work, the very fine thread and beautifully done jours used for a purpose and not just because they are interesting, all point to a very high quality manufacturer. No raised work needed here. I do think it is cotton, not linen. There are a few glues pots along the sticks, and I think I see a few tiny holes in the mesh, but overall very good condition.

   No bids.

Feb 05, 2012 02:05:25 PST
Offered by:
Ebay seller kimsucadi, Wokingham, Berkshire, United Kingdom
Comments:  It’s not the greatest Honiton handkerchief, pure slug/snails, and the work is a bit loose. But look at the plaited ground and all those figures.  It’s primitive, but primitive art can be wonderful. I wonder at the initials EW under the crown, could this be a Queen Elizabeth commemorative? Some holes in the brides and in the centers of the edge flowers.

   28.99 1 bid.

Auction ends:
Feb 05, 2012 08:30:09 PST
Offered by:
Ebay seller Baptiste1900, Paris, France
Comments: A Duchesse de Bruxelles fan with Mother of Pearl decorated sticks. The lace is a bit conventional, the bobbinlace motifs loosely worked. There is a large Point de Gaze insert which appears to have both needle and bobbin motifs, and I think they are appliqued on a machine net. Quite unusual, but it helps in the condition. The net is in very good shape. In fact all of the lace is in very good condition, I don’t see any problems from the photos.

Comments: A Youghal handkerchief with a date and name written on the cloth, R Drew, Dec 19. 1878. It’s a reasonable date. Good design, nicely attached to the center cloth.  The work is well done, and condition excellent. I only see one small hole, 4th photo in a leaf on the right. A very good example of this lace.

Comments: This seller has shown good Maltese handkerchiefs before. This one has a complex ground against good guipure motifs. A three layer construction. Wish there were some closeups to better determine condition, but overall it looks very good.

Comments: In complexity this reminds me of the previous handkerchief.  Nice combination of woven leaves and guipure work.I especially like the grouping of the 8 pointed leaf flowers around the center circle in the midsection of the collar, looks like an elaborate flower spray.  Condition looks very good, seller notes some minor pulls.

Offered by:
Ebay seller baraud, Newton Abbot, United Kingdom
Comments: A Point de Gaze fan with Mother of Pearl sticks. Not quite the quality of the framed one above, but not too far off. No raised work, but that’s fine, it doesn’t need any. The design makes good use of the space with naturalistic flowers and leaves. The decorative fillings are a bit plain, but the overall organization of the design is excellent. But the symmetry seems a bit off, due I think to the mounting.  I wonder if these sticks are original.  Seller cites very minor defects, some damage and repair to the sticks.

Comments: I came very close to doing a Special Ebay Alert on this one.  I don’t quite know what to make of the heavily pleated vestment – this isn’t in my expertise.  The lace is spectacular, Valenciennes de Gand of the best quality.  Shading, raised work, it’s all there.  And the condition appears excellent, just a few stains in the linen.  Please don’t wash this. And keep it in as original together shape as possible.

The LaceNews Channel on YouTube – Update for January 2012

http://www.youtube.com/user/lacenews

Summary:
One hundred fifty-seven videos and two more playlists were added in the January 2012 update. Eighteen previously listed videos are no longer available. That brings the current video total to 2,056 in 86 playlists.  The sorting convention for playlist videos is first by post author, then by date, then alphabetically by title. An exception is the Fashion playlist, which is only sorted by date. A pdf of all videos in their sorted order for each playlist can be downloaded at Playlist_Jan_2012.  If  you are into playing with databases, you can also download my original EXCEL file at Playlist_Jan_2012.  These files have three sections – first a listing of all the videos in their sorted order with the new additions shown in red. Deletions are shown in green (the author can delete a post, declare it private, or an account can close). Second, a list of just the new additions.  Finally, there is a summary of activity in each playlist by month.

The playlist Update_January_2012, which is now the first one in the channel list in the old YouTube format, contains all the new videos added for December. The order is the same as in the pdf file. The Update_December_2011 playlist is still there, and the Update_November_2011 playlist has been deleted. Videos being collected for the February update are in the playlist Z-Update.

If you see something that is missing, or if you have suggestions for better organization, please write to lacenews@gmail.com.

Newly added playlists include:
Africa – Lace (2 videos)
USA – Machine (8 videos)

New videos added to the collection:
Below I summarize the number of new videos added to existing playlists. In parentheses, I am also adding the number of videos in a playlist that were deleted outside of my control during the month. Note, I don’t always check every playlist for deletions with each monthly update – usually just the ones that have new additions.

Notes on the format:
No changes.

Here are a few new interesting things:
– I’ve changed the featured video on the LaceNews Channel home page to a piece on Brazilian lacemakers exhibiting at the Santa Fe Folk Art Market, sponsored yearly by the International Folk Art Museum. They primarily make a drawnwork fabric deriving from Teneriffe and related Spanish Sol laces. I see them there every year.
– The new African category shows 2 videos with broadly interpreted ‘lace’ from a recent exhibition.
– Lots of updates to Halas lace in anticipation of the upcoming Halas Lace Festival starting in April.
– Two nice Puerto Rican bobbinlace entries – haven’t seen much from them lately.
– I collected 8 videos photographing the abandoned Scranton Lace factory in Pennsylvania. One is from Hillary Rodham Clinton whose father worked there when she was growing up. (She’s the US Secretary of State, and came close to running for President).
– Put up 3 videos on the rather haunting song ‘Tatted Lace’ in USA – Music.  See the lyrics at http://tinyurl.com/7todeot.

Auction: Hôtel Drouot, Linge, Dentelles, Tissus – February 9, 2012

Linge, Dentelles, Tissus
Date: Thursday, February 9, 2012
Place:
Richelieu – Salle 16
Directions: http://tinyurl.com/85b78gl
Time: Auction begins at 11:00 AM
Online Catalog:
http://catalogue.drouot.com/indexDrouot.jsp?id=12403
Auction by: Le Calvez et Associés, SVV
Tél. 01.34.48.03.44
email: finesart@wanadoo.fr

Notes: This sale has many fine textiles and costumes, and also a lot of very good lace.  Note the wide alb Brussels Duchesse trimmings of lot 131. But keep going toward the end of the catalog, starting around lot 367. Note particularly:
Point de gaze handkerchief, lot 377
Brussels application crinoline flounces, lots 382 and 404
Brussels with drochel ground, lot 391
Point de gaze flounces, lots 396, 413, 450, 451, 452, 453
Brussels with brides flounce, lot 405
Chantilly pieces, lots 406 and 415
Point d’Angleterre flounce, lot 443

I had once started to list Drouot auctions, they occur weekly and often list ‘dentelles’. But without catalogs and with misleading titles, it’s difficult to make a judgment of what is actually there. This one is not a dedicated lace auction, but it does have excellent pieces and a wonderful online catalog. This will be a ‘live auction’, and I believe that the proceedings will be broadcast live on the net.

Drouot is an organization of auction houses throughout France, including their main facility, the Hôtel Drouot in the 9th arrondissement of Paris. Established in 1852, Hôtel Drouot held a monopoly on French antiques auctions until legal reforms opened the way for international competition in 2000.  The Gazette Drouot http://www.gazette-drouot.com/ lists upcoming auctions.
Online bidding: All bidders must first register with Drouot. Go to https://drouotonline.webzone-secure.org/creationdecompte to create an account.
Login at http://www.drouotonline.com/ for online auctions, or http://www.drouotlive.com/ for live auctions on the net.
You also have to register for individual auctions.  There are many videos (in French) explaining the process at: http://www.drouot.com/static/drouot_video_sommaire.html?lang=en.

Ebay Alerts! Twenty-two items – January 29, 2012

http://tinyurl.com/77ulson ANTIQUE LACE-EARLY ITALIAN LACE BORDER
Size: 3″ x 149″
Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Jan 29, 2012 16:09:29 PST
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A Milanese tape lace border, with interesting double bride ornamentation. The brides also are used as filling elements. The tape itself is quite plain, doubling back to form flower heads and leaves. Some attempt at line drawing in the tape to create diagonal patterns., and a little halfstitch around the curves. The foot edge is elaborate, typical of Milanese lace, although it does change pattern once in a while (maybe a replacement or repair?).  The piece looks original, and in very good condition – I don’t see any problems from the photos.

   Sold for $56.99, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7fvh3bo Maltese bobbin lace designed in two section with upper and lower crosses
Size: 40 cm x 320 cm
Starting Price: 24.00 GBP with reserve
Auction ends: Jan 30, 2012 02:46:39 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller lunnantiques, London, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A wide 2-part cotton Maltese border. The design is a bit thin with elongated plaited leaves. Which may just indicate a non-Maltese origin, this is an unexplored question. Condition is a bit rough, it has a washed look, although that’s hard to verify. Some damage along the top in places. Nice juxtaposition of the roundels on top and the teardrop shapes on the bottom.

Sold for 322.00 GBP, 8 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/6s58zlm VERY FINE HAND MADE MID 19TH C CHANTILLY LACE BONNET VEIL W FINE FLORALS
Size: 15″ x 43″
Starting Price: $29.00
Auction ends: Jan 30, 2012 16:02:31 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller jamiexmas*, Southbridge, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: A bonnet veil, I’m calling it handmade. Seems to have been made of 4 strips longitudinally joined together, and wear at the seams is obvious. There aren’t enough closeups, but it seems to have a fond chant 5-pointed star ground, unusual, but not unheard of. I’d like to see how the join is done.  Another unusual element, the kind of Chantilly ‘guipure’ work done along the bottom strip – it doesn’t quite match the rest of the piece, but not entirely out of character. Overall condition is rough, mainly holes in the bottom strip. An unusual piece, maybe Spanish?

Sold for $29.00, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/6m7x6s7 Fragment of Mechlin lace c 1820
Size: 4 cm x 120 cm
Starting Price: 30.00 GBP
Auction ends: Jan 31, 2012 02:07:07 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller lunnantiques, London, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A narrow Mechlin border iwth a thin, undulating design indicative of the early 9th century. The fillings are simple, but they don’t need to be fancier; it’s a nice naturalistic design. The condition appears to be exceptional.

Sold for 38.00 GBP, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7eof2kq ANTIQUE LACE-LOVELY LACE FLOUNCE 172″ X 12 1/2″WIDE
Size: 12.5″ x 172″
Starting Price: 30.00 GBP with reserve
Auction ends: Jan 31, 2012 02:07:07 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London-New York, United States
Comments: Muslin applique on machine net with a naturalistic flower design. It’s hard to make this come out looking really good without a lot of embroidered embellishments – but this one does a very nice job.  Some embroidered net fillings. I won’t say Carrickmacross since it doesn’t have a lot of the usual stylistic elements, but it might be and Irish piece. Condition, especially the net, is very good.

104.05 GBP, 4 bidders, reserve not met.

Size: 37″ neck edge
Starting Price: 44.99 GBP
Auction ends: Jan 31, 2012 08:34:25 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London-New York, United States
Comments: This piece was sold back in November, so not sure why it’s come up again http://tinyurl.com/6w6andz. It’s a Honiton Point collar, a little on the snails/slugs side, with roses and thistle design.  A few minor holes, but overall condition is very good.

Sold for 44.99 GBP, 1 bidder.

Starting Price: 36.00 GBP
Auction ends: Jan 31, 2012 09:22:38 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller lunnantiques, London, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A narrow, Alençon border of very geometrical design. It has a reseau ground with some small jour fillings. Seem to be a few pulls in the ground, but nothing serious, overall very good condition. Nicely done work for a piece this small, indicating the very high technical quality of Alençon lace in the 19th century. I won’t speculate on a date, could have been made anytime in the 19th c, probably a bit later.

Sold for 36.00 GBP, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/83vfsl2 ANTIQUE LACE- CIRCA 1700’s, FINE BINCHE LACE

Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Jan 31, 2012 10:14:04 PST
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A real shame this is so short. It’s early Valenciennes with the fond d’neige, to my mind, one of the great high points in bobbinlace. Beautiful line-drawing effect combined with half-stitch shading.  It has a naturalistic swirling design, just breaking out of the bizarre silk phase. At this point in time, around 1720-30, Binche was a very minor industry with few documented examples. Valenciennes was the big lace center, and the lace went through a well known design progression, of which this is an early example. Condition looks very good, one or two small holes, nothing major.

   Sold for $195.00, 3 bidders.

Starting Price: $9.99
Auction ends: Jan 31, 2012 11:50:18 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller calicogre, Ottawa, ON, Canada
Comments: A Honiton border, that seems to have a pre-made tape of lozenge motifs included (see ebay handkerchief 360417093452 written up on LaceNews in http://tinyurl.com/7z6ygn5 for something similar). A few simple tally fillings, and the design very much snails/slugs. Un-ornamented plaited brides. Everything here is made for speed of execution. I like the overall effect, does what it can with what it has. Some staining otherwise good condition.

   Sold for $36.00, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/7upa2fj 19thC HM Point de Gaz NEEDLELACE + BRUSSELS Duchesse BOBBIN LACE Collar 24″
Size: 24″ x 24″ laid flat
Starting Price: $24.99
Auction ends: Jan 31, 2012 19:12:31 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller winter-garden, Palm Beach, United States
Comments: A Brussels Duchesse dress front of unusual form. The Point de Gaze is confined to three fairly small areas, primarily as decorative fillings. Note the needlelace rings in the centers of the bobbinlace flowers – unusual. Overall it’s a nicely made piece and appears to be in very good condition. Note – lace is not well served by photographing it on such a light ground. Hard to make out the details, and whatever stains might be present are magnified by the lack of contrast.

   Sold for $78.00, 4 bidders.

Auction ends: Feb 01, 2012 11:47:36 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller chair29, Fairhaven, MA, United States
Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges handkerchief, no needlelace. Basically the design is formed from a flower and single leaf in several combinations, very simple, but effective. Un-ornamented plaited brides.  I like the way the design goes up into the linen. A few stains, but basically very good condition.

   Sold for $65.00, 1 bidder.

Auction ends: Feb 01, 2012 16:44:10 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller twist-in-time, Philadelphia / DFW, United States
Comments: A border of late 17th early 18th c Milanese lace with a 4-thread plaited star ground. Interesting design, although not the greatest Milanese I’ve ever seen. The tapes in this lace are breaking up to form motifs, and have some hole and other decorations. But for the most part the clothwork is fairly plain. There is a repeat in the design, a bit hard to discern, but the piece does seem to be complete in headside and footside. I can spot a few repairs, and the edges are frayed a bit in places. You can see a few tan marks in the photos, as the seller notes.

   Sold for $275.00, I think.

Comments: A small, well made Point de Gaze collar set. At least I think it’s a collar. The work is crisp and sharp, note the windows in the raised petals of the roses. The edge picots are looped in imitation of Alençon horsehair. Good fillings, unusual designs. Very good condition – I think the off color of the raised petals came with the piece.

   Sold for $51.00, 5 bidders.

Offered by: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: Two lengths of Brussels application on machine net.  Bobbinlace motifs, I don’t see any needlelace, even as fillings. Good undulating design works well with the scalloped border. Note the combination of rings and sprigs in the upper ground. Seller cites some scattered small holes to the net, minor. Otherwise very good condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: Two more Brussels application on machine net lengths. The design is more complex, more ‘fussy’ than the previous one, and there are some small needlelace fillings in the motifs. No decoration in the upper net.  There are a number of holes in the main design and it looks as though some of it has been repaired. Scattered small holes in the net.

   Sold for $125.00, 6 bidders.

Auction ends: Feb 02, 2012 09:21:14 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller oldthreads, NATURALLY BEAUTIFUL, FRANKLINVILLE, N.Y., United States
Comments: I think this is a really interesting piece, but I’d hesitate to call it Maltese. Even though it has that same kind of layered structure. Has more a French Cluny feel. And the design is bold, almost like it had an Egyptian revival influence.  Condition looks very good, I see one loose spot at one end, but nothing major.

   No bids.

Offered by: Ebay seller pursediva, Beautiful California!, United States
Comments: I’ll put this one up because lace collectors often include whitework embroidery in their collections, primarily because of the needlelace filling used in the work. This piece has some of that, but also includes a little drawnwork to outline some of the motifs. I don’t know if this is appenzell embroidery, it’s not my area, but probably a good attribution.  A beautiful piece in very good condition. Seller does say it has been ‘freshly laundered’.

Comments: Equipment collectors are taking note of these two unusual English items. First is an asymmetrical Honiton pillow, probably bran-straw filled. I’ve asked for better photos of the square one, which seems to be some kind of sloping desk.  The bobbins seem to be quite good, here’s hoping the pillows are appropriate. They are definitely not modern.
1/31/12, added a better photo of the square pillow.

Starting Price: $45.00

Offered by: Ebay seller bobiblo91, ESSONNES, France
Comments: This border has a Point de Gaze ground with bobbin motifs, meaning 19th century Point d’Angleterre. Yet it also has a more conventional Point de Gaze rose insert without raised petals. Belgian lacemakers often combined techniques, and Point d’Angleterre was normally a high end product. This one isn’t quite as over-the-top as you sometimes see, but still quite good. Photos on this are pretty over-exposed, but I think the condition is very good, no major problems.

Comments: This is one of those piece collectors might pass by. But it’s beautifully made, has a good, bold design and is in very good condition. Worthy of notice.  I don’t know where it might have been made, sort of a French Cluny technique. But mysterious China might be a possibility.

Comments: A Spanish pillow and stand, hooded bobbins notwithstanding. Normally I list equipment as fine examples of woodworking, basically meaning no modern screws visible. I’ll make an exception here, the stand is solid and well made, the pillow wide and in good condition. Perfect for a beginner in Spanish lacemaking.

Ebay Alerts! One item – January 27, 2012

Apologies, missed Thursday alerts due to travel for business. And there’s not too much interesting on Ebay just now anyway. Really! But I did want to discuss one particular item.

Size: 3 1/2″ wide x 6 YARDS & 16″
Starting Price: $0.99
Auction ends: Jan 28, 2012 17:50:47 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller shotgun*wedding, MILWAUKEE, United States
Comments: There’s quite an offline discussion going on about this piece. The seller cut an additional 3 yards from the original piece, Ebay #140675419859 sold on Jan 9th, and has now put up the rest for sale, intact. The discussion is basically whether or not it is an early Flemish piece (write me separately and I’ll put you in touch with the conversation).
This is one of those indeterminate guipure laces that no one really has a solid handle on identification. A few things bother me about it. It is very long, fairly wide, and made with a thicker thread. Long pieces of laces like this do survive, often from Italy or Eastern Europe, but it would be extremely unusual for a very early Flanders lace. The design is well on its way to a more stylized pattern that one might expect to survive over a long period of time, but not so far gone that it is unrecognizable. (as in the example shown here)
(Example, unknown origin, perhaps Easter European)
The ground is 4-thread plaited on all sides of a 5-pointed star mesh, not very clear, but I can convince myself it’s there. There are a few plaited leaves in the centers of some motifs. All of this is indicative of Italian, in the Abruzzi regions, and you see the chunky weaving in Pescocostanzo laces.  (as in this example, and note the way they get some texture in the clothwork, much like the listed piece).
(Example, probable Pescocostanzo origin)
I’m not implying that the listed piece resembles either of these two, but they do have some elements in common. It just goes to show how difficult it is to identify these laces. Yet the listed piece, shown below, does have a delicacy, despite the heavy thread, that could indicate a Flanders origin. I really think that once this more ‘production’ style took hold that it spread to many places.
Anyway, I’m going with Italian, late 18th or 19th century.

(This is the piece listed on Ebay)

Essex not Wessex

Apologies to subscribers and event organizers, but I confused Essex and Wessex on the March 11th Lace Fair just posted. Corrected on the blog, but too late to change for the subscribers. Wessex is Feb 18, 2012.
