http://tinyurl.com/7evkq68 ANTIQUE LACE SMALL PRETTY HANDMADE ALENCON NEEDLELACE COLLAR HORSEHAIR PICOTS
Size: 3″ without footing x 15″ inside edge
Starting Price: $29.99
Auction ends: Dec 09, 2011 16:15:33 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller greatlace, Paris – Palm Beach, United States
Comments: A small later 19thc Alençon collar. It has a number of small holes in the net, but complete pieces like this come up so rarely that I would overlook a lot of that. It’s a fairly simple design with the rather open toilé adapted to get the work to go a little faster. Nice fillings, and the horsehair picots are used both on the outside edge and on internal motifs. In Alençon horsehair of several different weights was always used to make picots, but was removed in in the ornamental fillings.

   Sold for $29.99, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/83wce47 ANTIQUE LACE SMALL DAINTY HANDMADE POINT DE GAZE COLLAR
Size: 1″ at back of neck, inside edge 13″
Starting Price: $24.99
Auction ends: Dec 09, 2011 16:34:50 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller greatlace, Paris – Palm Beach, United States
Comments: A delicate collar of Point de Gaze.  No raised work, and just a few ornaments of rings.  The simple design has a narrow repeats of small leaves around the edge terminating in large leaf points at the ends. A very consistent idea. There are a few small holes in the ground.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/7ug5grb Antique Aged Brussels/Belgium Lace Roses Wedding Handkerchief/Hankie
Size: not given
Starting Price: 20.00 GBP
Auction ends: Dec 10, 2011 06:34:31 PST
Offered by:Ebay seller blinkfisher, haderslev, Denmark
Comments: A Danish roller pillow from Denmark. The wide roller has a ratchet stop.  There is no information given on age or manufacturer – it looks in such good condition that it might be quite new, or a rebuilt older one.  I wonder if anyone might recognize the maker.

Sold for 21.00 GBP, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/6t5zmn9 ANTIQUE HAND YOUGHAL LACE LAPPET
Size: 3″ ends, 1.5″ narrowest, 27″ long
Starting Price: $125.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: Dec 10, 2011 10:46:51 PST
Offered by:Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: A small tie with bulbous ends of Youghal. The lace technique is quite good with a variety of cloth stitches and fillings. The triangles used along the connecting band are very typical of Youghal foot edges in flounces. I’m not that wild about the overall design, but it is a good example of the technique.  A little stained, but the lace doesn’t seem to have any damage.

   Buy-it-Now option exercised for $125.00.

http://tinyurl.com/6td9ab2 LOUPE DE DENTELLIERE XIX° 1850
Size: 27 cm high
Starting Price: 90.00 EUR
Auction ends: Dec 10, 2011 11:14:46 PST
Offered by:Ebay seller lestef6433, Bieujac, France
Comments: This is one of those indeterminate ‘lacemaker lamps’ that I wrote about in the collecting piece Lighting for the Lacemaker http://tinyurl.com/3q39zro.  It may originally have another use, but it isn’t inconceivable that a lacemaker could use it as a focusing device. It is a hand-blown piece with a good pontil mark on the base. Seller cites a few white traces on the interior, might be a lime deposit. Be careful in shipping, the last one of these I bought arrived broken in several large pieces and several hundred smaller ones.

Sold for 184.50 EUR, 7 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/763ln2z Antique Vintage Irish Lace handmade crochet Collar
Size: neckline 16.5″, 4.75″ wide
Starting Price: $24.00
Auction ends: Dec 10, 2011 18:19:03 PST
Offered by:Ebay seller cantonchick, Carrollton, Texas, United States
Comments: I like the contrast of the larger edge roses against the Rose of Sharon ground. Sort of a frilled edge but without actual frills. Something similar sold on Ebay in November, http://tinyurl.com/6lsztkm.  Condition looks very good, I don’t see any problems from the photos.

   Sold for $24.00, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/7t27uen SUPERB ANTIQUE 19TH CENTURY BRUSSELS LACE MOTHER OF PEARL FAN & BOX NO RESERVE
Size: not given.
Starting Price: $150.00
Auction ends: Dec 11, 2011 11:58:23 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller tassber, Studio City, California, United States
Comments: A tempting provenance, but no details. The box is also signed, citing a German manufacturer named Conrad Lauerwald, although the lace itself is Belgian. It gives a royal patronage and cites the Duke of Saxe-Meiningen (probably the one reigning from 1866-1914).  This would fit with the design of the lace. The lace is Point de Gaze, flat with no raised rose petals. A few small fillings, nothing fancy. The ground looks very fine, or maybe it’s a trick of the light. Small motifs, well designed to be folded. The lace looks in good condition, but there’s a lot of damage to the sticks.

   Sold for $150.00, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/7233fsm SUPERB ANTIQUE 19TH CENTURY BRUSSELS LACE MOTHER OF PEARL FAN & BOX NO RESERVE
Size: 2-3/8″ x 39.75″ + 26-3/8″
Starting Price: $25.99 with reserve.
Auction ends: Dec 11, 2011 15:41:22 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller KLARAANNA2006, Budapest, Budapest, Hungary
Comments: Two short pieces of Point de Gaze, very flat design with little ornamentation. Good short repeat that looks quite dense overall. The elaborate engrelure actually is a nice balance to the lower design. I’m not sure this would ruffle well. Seller cites a few small holes in the ground, but I can’t see them. The lace itself is a little stiff from all the cordonnet work.

   Sold for $150.00, 8 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7bm8rra ANTIQUE MIXED BRUSSELS LACE FLOUNCE 19TH CENTURY
Size: 3-7/8″ x 46″
Starting Price: $25.99
Auction ends: Dec 11, 2011 15:54:59 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller KLARAANNA2006, Budapest, Budapest, Hungary
Comments: Wish there were more of this.  A Brussels applique on machine net with a classical design of well-done small bobbin motifs. Note the esprits in the ground, and the net itself looks in very good shape. The large leaves separating the repeat along the lower edge are needlelace.  Seller cites two small holes and some age spots.

   Sold for $44.99, 5 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/874qcpu HandMade Antique Vtg LIERRE TAMBOUR LACE WEDDING BONNET VEIL SCARF *DISPLAY
Size: 33″ x 35″
Starting Price: $19.99
Auction ends: Dec 11, 2011 18:06:19 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: A bonnet veil of embroidered net. I don’t know if it is Lierre. I was really struck at how nicely this imitates Blonde de Caen.  Some unfortunate damage to the net with a few badly done repairs – but this is the problem with machine net. Once damaged like this it is very difficult to repair. But then, so is Blonde de Caen net.

   Sold for $124.72, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/6smpaqr Antique Aged Brussels/Belgium Lace Roses Wedding Handkerchief/Hankie
Size: 13″ x 13-3/4″
Starting Price: $35.00
Auction ends: Dec 11, 2011 19:39:43 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller aunteri, California, United States
Comments: This handkerchief looks impressive from a distance. The motifs are small, giving it a dense appearance.  But on close inspection the lace is a bit scraggly. Part of this is just general wear. But the point de gaze needlelace is very flat, little in the way of good fillings.  Lots of small holes in the ground. I would like to have seen this when it was new.

   Sold for $124.72, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/6vvdw7o ANTIQUE LACE-FINE NEEDLE LACE
Size: 4″ wide, not sure how long.
Starting Price: $55.00
Auction ends: Dec 12, 201103:53:54 PST
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: This is the kind of half point de gaze, half Venise type lace that sometimes gets associated with Zele (see the LaceNews Lace of the Month for Oct 2010, which is a little similar). The clothwork is nicely dense with some patterning, and interesting fillings.  The guipure between the grounded motifs is strong and effective. It isn’t the best example I’ve ever seen, but a very nice attempt. Condition looks very good.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/8784g5x BEAUTIFUL ANTIQUE MIXED BRUSSELS LACE FLOUNCE- 37 INCHES- UNUSED- CIRA 1850-70
Size: 5″ x 37″
Starting Price: 9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Dec 12, 2011 03:55:07 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller pbur3053, Selkirk, United Kingdom
Comments: I really wish there was more of this!  A beautiful piece of work. The motifs are so well done, with atypical needlelace fillings.  Interesting bobbinlace fillings in the large leaf motif, and the leaves themselves have great veining. It reminds me of the quality you see in Valenciennes de Gand, so I’ll guess it’s from the Ghent area.  At least that’s my best guess for now. Condition looks very good, I can’t see anything wrong.

Sold for 39.82 GBP, 7 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/6pv2gvy ANTIQUE LACE- BRUSSELS COLLAR, POINT DE GAZE COLLAR,CUF
Size: collar ~24″ x 3.25″, cuffs 10″ x 4.5″
Starting Price: $195.00
Auction ends: Dec 12, 2011 04:02:26 PST
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A matching Duchesse de Bruxelles cuff and collar set. Note the large needlelace flowers with concentric row of rings, and the wide raised petal layer. It’s an unusual set for Duchesse, a little off-normal in design.  Quality and condition appear very good.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/7soxk4t BEAUTIFUL ANTIQUE HONITON GUIPURE LACE WEDDING HANDKERCHIEF
Size: 13″ square
Starting Price: 9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Dec 12, 2011 07:12:02 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller pbur3053, Selkirk, United Kingdom
Comments: A Honiton handkerchief, definitely outside the snails/slugs venue. The motifs are densely worked with good tally fillings. I am a little thrown with the symmetry along the folded lines in the lace. It doesn’t quite seem to match up, and I’m not sure what went wrong here because the piece looks original. Still it’s a good example of a better quality Honiton. A few holes that the seller points out. nothing major.

Sold for 71.90 GBP, 7 bidders.

Lace Event Calendars

I’ve finally settled on a format for summarizing all the various lace events each month. Click on “Lace Event Calendars” at the bottom of the black banner header, in the middle, just under the Lace of the Month photo. One full year of monthly calendar icons will always be present for the current year, older items will be archived only with pointers.

Clicking on a particular calendar or pointer will bring up a pdf file for that month. Items listed on the calendar will direct you to the LaceNews post for that event. At the suggestion of a LaceNews reader I’ve changed the country color coding to simply adding a 2 character country code after each event. Click here to download a list of Country_Codes.

If there is no pointer associated with an event, it means that I know it is happening, but can’t find enough details for a formal post. Or it is included as a past event for information only. Most likely, I just haven’t gotten around to doing the event post yet.  Nothing is really official until the actual LaceNews post for an event is up.

I have investigated doing this through the attachable GOOGLE calendars, however the current version of WordPress that I am using does not support this plugin. This may change in the future.  At the moment the calendars are all pdfs constructed from the original MS Word files.

Readers might not be familiar with the word ‘Couvige’ found in some of the French events. Here’s a short explanation that I found on the web. “The word “Couvige” comes from the Latin word Cum Vicinus that means « between neighbours ». It was invented many centuries ago in the region of Velay, by and for all lace-makers.” It is now  used to indicate a lace meeting of a few days length.

If you would like an event listed, send a note to lacenews@gmail.com.

Ebay Alerts! Twelve items – December 4, 2011

http://tinyurl.com/7yd6wmv 19thc Irish Crochet Lace Large Collar Large Col Dentelle Crochet Irlande
Size: 15″ neck edge
Starting Price: $45.00
Auction ends: Dec 05, 2011 19:05:40 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller sirjle, Paris, France
Comments: An Irish Crochet collar formed of just a few standard motifs arranged in a scattered, but pleasing pattern. It saves time and effort to stick with just a few motifs, and these are very consistent with good raised rings. Note the extra work on the edge stitches. Overall I think it’s an effective strategy and makes a nice presentation. Condition looks very good, I don’t see any problems from the photos.

   Sold for $45.00, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/7aallud Antique Brussels Hand Lace Wedding Hankie
Size: 14″ square
Starting Price: $49.95
Auction ends: Dec 06, 2011 12:01:23 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller mianna, Plantation, FL, United States
Comments: An interesting guipure bobbinlace, origin is puzzling. The Belgians didn’t really do this kind of work. I think it has an English flavor with the tallies. Maybe Beds? But the edge is atypical. Perhaps a Spanish piece? A nice package, good design, technique, and condition.
Mon Dec 5th – see the important comment provided by a LaceNews reader on this piece.

   Sold for $190.05, 6 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/6onl84q ANTIQUE 1800’S VICTORIAN HANDMADE LACE DRESS MANTLE COLLAR TINY BOBBIN ORNATE
Size: 22″ neckline, mid back to collar edge, 2.75″, outer edge 48″
Starting Price: $9.95
Auction ends: Dec 06, 2011 13:49:15 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller vntgclothing, Winchester, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: A collar of Bruges Bloemwerk. The motifs are large, and the brides quite simple. Good workmanship, and I find the design quite effective. Seller cites some stains and a few broken brides, nothing major.

   Sold for $72.00, 8 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/6oo9773 BRUGGES BOBBIN LACE COLLAR
Size: 22″ neckline, mid back to collar edge, 2.75″, outer edge 48″
Starting Price: $85.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: Dec 06, 2011, exact time not given.
Offered by: Ebay seller thelacemuseum, Fremont, California, United States
Comments: Another Bruges collar, this one with some nice fillings in the motifs. Double picoted brides. This piece is being sold by the Sunnyvale Lace Museum, and I promise to get the writeup from my recent visit on LaceNews this week!  Occasionally they will sell a few extra pieces to help finance the museum. This piece seems a bit yellowed, but no structural problems that I can see.

  No takers.

http://tinyurl.com/7jwalpu EXQUISITE BRUSSELS POINT DE GAZE HANDKERCHIEF
Size: 15″ square
Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Dec 06, 2011 16:50:49 PST
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: You can always find Point de Gaze handkerchiefs, and whitework embroidered handkerchiefs, but seldom the two together. And with such flamboyance; or is it a little fussy? The lace has a dense design, no raised work, and fillings are well done although limited in variety. These flat needlelaces can be extraordinary. I like how they have used the point de gaze net even in small areas in the corners.  The embroidery is excellent, but I’m not too happy with how the simple square is joined to the lace. Might have been sculpted a bit.  I see a few tiny pinholes, very minor.

$800.00, 7 bidders, reserve not met.

http://tinyurl.com/7ybgbbn BLG HanMade Antique Vtg SILK MALTESE LACE SCARF PANEL:
Size: 8″ x 68″
Starting Price: $24.99
Auction ends: Dec 06, 2011 18:07:24 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: I was struck at how nice this Maltese scarf looks tied in a bow on the manikin. The design is quite typical of this lace, Maltese crosses alternating with a sun-type design, and a ground of plaited leaves down the center. There are a few stains, and overall wear showing up as wrinkling along the edges. A few broken brides and some seam attachments needed.  It’s a good standard example.

   Sold for $74.00, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7hmf8nk Set of 3 Antique Teneriffe Lace Makers Pin Wheels * English * Circa 1900.
Size: 2-3/4″, 2-3/8″, 1-7/8″
Starting Price: $9.00
Auction ends: Dec 06, 2011 19:03:01 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller elegant.arts, Midlothian, Virginia, United States
Comments: Teneriffe looms are a collecting area all in themselves, especially examples from the early 20th century. These tablets are English, and were also used as advertising tools, with different names printed on the face (Faudel and Vicars are examples). They come standard in 3 sizes, but you can also find the rarer 8″ diameter ones occasionally. They are made of heavy cardboard with a woven tape around the edge. The label is fixed with the advertising on one side and usually a picture of the lace in process on the other side.  The two white pins mark the starting path. It is rare to find a set in this good condition – they look fresh out of the box. Just wish they also had the box. Or whatever they came in.

   Sold for $93.99, 11 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/6lzpy9w Antique Victorian MOP Brussels Lace Fan Fächer eventail ventaglio abanico 1900
Size: 10.25″ long, 18″ wide
Starting Price: 0.99 GBP
Auction ends: Dec 07, 2011 08:47:32 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller madaboutfans, Cork, Ireland
Comments: A Duchesse de Bruxelles fan with carved mother-of-pearl sticks. The center Point de Gaze medallion looks intact, and has one rose with raised petals.  The lace is standard Duchesse, some raised work in the bobbinlace. Seller cites repairs to two sticks, otherwise very good overall condition.

Sold for 205.00 GBP, 14 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7ck9hon Vtg Antique Handmade Bobbin Lace Shawl Bucks Point Buckinghamshire Ornate 19thC
Size: 25″ x 117″
Starting Price: $495.00
Auction ends: Dec 07, 2011 18:36:17 PST
Offered by:Ebay seller twist-in-time, Philadelphia / DFW, United States
Comments: A white cotton rectangular point ground shawl. I think a Bucks origin makes sense, particularly because of the elaborate fillings in the motifs. It is quite different from Neuchatel examples. There is a little damage to the net which is difficult to repair in point ground laces. I’d leave it alone for the time being. It is an interesting piece with an ambitious design.

   Sold for $495.00, 1 bidder.

Starting Price: $99.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: Dec 10, 2011 10:46:50 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: A pair of Rosaline Perlé cuffs. I think the perls are needlelace rings.  Good symmetry in the design. It’s hard not to like the delicacy of Rosaline, and these are a nice example in very good condition.

Buy-it-now exercised for $99.00

http://tinyurl.com/6q6drgz 18TH CENTURY- 240CM RARE ARGENTAN EARLY FRENCH NEEDLELACE
Size: 3″ X 94.5″
Starting Price: $25.99 with reserve
Auction ends: Dec 10, 2011 14:30:04 PST
Offered by: bay seller klaraanna2006, Budapest, Budapest, Hungary
Comments: A long length of Alençon with Brides Tortillee in the main ground and ordinary reseau along the edge. That’s a very typical pattern for the ‘Herren Alençon’ laces, which are designed to be ruffled, especially in men’s cuffs. This one is quite delicate, late 18th century. It’s really not possible to tell if this is Alençon- or Argentan-made, at this period they were both doing the same kind of work.  Lace from this period seldom survives in such good condition, aside from a few small holes, there seems to be no damage to the ground. Unusual.

$81.00, 2 bidders, reserve not met.

http://tinyurl.com/7hkm7cr Antique Brussels Point de Gaze Lace Triangle Shawl 105″ x 75″ *MAGESTIC & RARE*
Size: 75″ x 105″
Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Dec 10, 2011 14:41:15 PST
Offered by: bay seller sugarbaby2011, The North Pole, Canada
Comments: A Brussels Bobbinlace application on machine net, with a few simple needlelace fillings. It has a central spray of delicately worked flowers, quite open in texture. Further flower sprays are found in the triangle points. The edge design is well thought out and executed. It’s a good design, but there are extensive repairs to the ground.

   Sold for $3,800.00, 12 bidders.

The LaceNews Channel on YouTube – Update for November 2011

http://www.youtube.com/user/lacenews

One hundred thirty three videos and eight more playlists were added in the November 2011 update. Ten previously listed videos are no longer available. That brings the current video total of 1,793 in 81 playlists.  The sorting convention for playlist videos is first by post author, then by date, then alphabetically by title. A pdf of all videos in their sorted order for each playlist can be downloaded at Playlist_Nov_2011.  You can also download my original EXCEL file at Playlist_Nov_2011.  These files have three sections – first a listing of all the videos in their sorted order with the new additions shown in red. Deletions are shown in green (see the discussion below). Second, a list of just the new additions.  Finally, there is a summary of activity in each playlist by month. If you see something that is missing, or if you have suggestions for better organization, please write to lacenews@gmail.com.

The playlist Update_November_2011, which is now the first one in the channel list in the old YouTube format, contains all the new videos added for November. The order is the same as in the pdf file. The Update_October_2011 is still there, and in the future I will only keep two months of these summary playlists.

YouTube has just updated their format, again, without telling anyone beforehand, and there is a serious bug in playlist management. Normally you can add, delete, and move videos around in a playlist, then save the result. Videos are sometimes deleted outside of the playlist owner’s control, such as when an account is canceled or when the owner wants only private access. The bug is that if the playlist contains any of the externally deleted videos, the save function will not work.  Below you can see that I’m starting to keep track of externally deleted videos – these will be retained in the accounting summaries with the titles changed to green, but will not be counted in the final totals. Any playlist that has externally deleted videos for November will not be properly updated with the new additions. They will be at the end of the playlist, but not sorted in their proper order. YouTube is working on a fix for this, but who knows when that will be available.

There is also a new Channel format on YouTube that isn’t too user friendly.  If you have come across this, be sure to click on the ‘Videos’ tab at the upper left to see the playlists.  ‘Feed’ is the default, and is useless for an effort like LaceNews, but I don’t know how to change the default. The ordering of the playlists is now even worse than it was before, with the only choices being date created from earliest to latest, or vice versa. In the old format at least you had some control for the first 12 playlists. Even alphabetically would be some help, but it’s not an option.

Newly added playlists include:

Belgium – Lierse Kant (2 videos)
Brazil – Embroidered Net (1 video)
China – Machine Lace (1 video)
Drawnwork (19 videos)
Norway – Hardanger (7 videos)
Tatting 4 (25 videos transferred from Tatting 3)
Ukraine – Bobbinlace (2 videos)
Ukraine – Irish Crochet (1 video)

Below I summarize the number of new videos added to existing playlists. In parentheses, I am also adding the number of videos in a playlist that were deleted outside of my control during the month.

Notes on the format:
I added a 4th tatting playlist because the third one was getting too big. I transferred 25 videos from Tatting 3 to the new Tatting 4 playlist. In the future I’m considering creating a separate playlist for needle tatting – currently these are mixed in with shuttle tatting.
I renamed the ‘Embroidered Net’ playlist to ‘Spain – Embroidered Net’, because the only video was for the Spanish Punto de Borracho.

Here are a few new interesting things:
– I’ve changed the featured video on the LaceNews Channel home page to a piece that gives a silent film from Vadstena, Sweden, probably made in the early 1940s.
– I’ve finally found one video from China which appears to be an advertisement for some machine laces and created a new playlist. Not much, but it’s a start.
– The ‘Nancy Today’ videos can get a little tedious, but she has one called ‘Nancy Today: How to hold short broken bobblin lace threads’ that is interesting. It’s in Bobbinlace Instruction 2.
– In my continuing effort to get some recognition for Mexican drawnwork, I’ve created a new Drawnwork playlist.  In the process I found one drawnwork video from the Canary Islands, and added it to the Teneriffe playlist.
– Check out the wonderful traditional metallic bobbinlace cap in ‘Vera Rieger aus Allensbach klöppelte in sechs Wochen ihre Trachtenhaube’, in Germay-Bobbinlace. Allensbach is in Germany, but she is using a Swiss flat pillow with movable center blocks. But then Allensbach is also very close to the Swiss border.
