Ebay Alerts! Fourteen items – October 20, 2011

http://tinyurl.com/3dzensc Antique Fine BRUSSELS Point de Gaze Lace Handmade Flounce
Size: 5″ wide, 36″ neckline, 68″ outside length
Starting price: $175.00
Auction ends: Oct 21, 2011 21:32:58 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller i_spy_design, Austin, Texas, United States
Comments: There are photos of both ends of this piece, so I’ll assume it is a Point de Gaze bertha, fairly well intact.  Raised petal roses, and some nice fillings along the length. The design is fairly standard.  Seller says it was recovered from a flapper dress – it would be interesting to know if it was actually used as a bertha collar. the condition is surprisingly good considering the history. There are holes on both ends, and scattered small holes throughout the net. It also has a little bit of a rumpled washed look.

   Sold for $179.50, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3sd8w5m Large Antique handmade oval runner Rococo Bruges bobbin lace – white 58″x14″
Size: 58″ x 14″
Starting price: $29.99
Auction ends: Oct 22, 2011 12:14:57 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller ors4946, Antwerpen, Belgium
Comments: The seller is from Belgium, although this piece has more of an Italian feel. I could probably buy the Belgian origina, note the flowers looking a bit like bloemwerk. I do like the double bride hexagonal ground. It’s a heavy lace, probably a tourist item. But I like the design, and it’s in very good condtion.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/3b5pgxj HandMade Antiqeu Vtg IRISH CROCHET LACE COLLAR DRESS FRONT
Size: 7.5″ largest width, 27.5″ neckline, 47″ outside edge
Starting price: $24.99
Auction ends: Oct 23, 2011 18:03:38 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: A large collar or dress front of Irish Crochet. It’s an arrangement of basically one simple motif combination – a flower with one or two trefoils. The work is done quite closely with raised work in the centers of the flowers and trefoils. Simple picots on the brides. It’s not a very elaborate design, but it has a nice presence.  A little staining, but overall quite good condition.

   Sold for $47.00, 4 bidders.

Starting price: $16.99
Auction ends: Oct 23, 2011 18:13:11 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: Matching cuffs with heavy motifs including raised rings. Interesing looped picots in the bride ground. The condition is a little yellowed and stained, with an occasional broken bride.  Otherwise they are in good shape.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/3vxdfls Antique Linen Tablecloth Figural Needle Milanese Bobbin Lace Cherubs Griffins
Size: 65″ x 92″
Starting price: $279.99
Auction ends: Oct 23, 2011 18:46:01 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller drb3905, Ocala, FL 34471, United States
Comments: A tablecloth with inserts of Cantu figural bobbinlace. It also contains cutwork embroidery and what look like Burano-type needlelace inserts.  The bobbinlace is quite nice with well-worked figures of historical and mythological scenes. It is quite an exuberant presentation. Unfortunately no napkins survive with this piece.  There appear to be virtually no condition problems, at least that I can see from the photos.

   Sold for $666.00, 5 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3uv5kca Point de Gaze butterfly
Size: 6 cm x 8 cm
Starting price: $48.00
Auction ends: Oct 24, 2011 01:39:11 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lunnantiques, London, London, United Kingdom
Comments: These little Point de Gaze butterflies were a 20th century tourist item, and they can be delightful. This one if fairly plain, but in good condition, anda the edge cordonnet around the body isn’t too crisp. I can’t see any defects in the lace, but there is some staining.

   Sold for $59.00, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/4yo3d8q Antique Irish Crochet handmade lovely nice size collar
Size: 14″ inside edge, 8.25″ center back
Starting price: 24.99 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 24, 2011 06:55:36 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: An Irish Crochet collar of fairly small, well-done motifs.  There is only one closelup, and it’s hard to tell how the picots on the brides are made or if there is any raised work. Note the found motifs along the outside edge instead of the usual looped edging. That’s something you often see in Silk Irish Crochet, but I dn’t think this one is silk. Condition looks very good, seller cites some minor pulls but I can’t spot them.

Sold for 27.00 GBP, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3fxx24n dentelle Duchesse Bruxelles Point de Gaze Eventail 19thc Brussel Lace Fan
Size: Outer edge 41″, inner edge 17.7″
Starting price:49.00 EUR
Auction ends: Oct 24, 2011 11:02:58 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller sirjle, Paris, France
Comments: A Duchesse de Bruxelles fan leaf with the needlelace contribution centered at the top. On rose in the needlelace with raised petals.  The work on the bobbinlace is fairly loose giving it a very light appearance – often this kind of lace bogs down a lot from over-enthusiasm. There is some staining in the needlelace and a little elsewhere, also seems to be a few small holes in the bobbinlace.  I like the photograph against the grey background, it looks almost like a print.

Sold for 49.00 EUR, 1 bidder.

Size: 48 cm x 2.28 m
Starting price:152.00 EUR
Auction ends: Oct 24, 2011 11:06:53 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller sirjle, Paris, France
Comments: A good scarf of Brussels application on machine net. Bobbinlace motifs are small and nicely worked, and the design fits the ends of the scarf very well.  There are a few needlelace fillings, but the major emphasis is on the bobbinlace. The condition appears very good, which counts a lot in a lace like this.  The delicate cotton net is the first thing to go. I see a few tiny holes and a little staining, but nothing major.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/3qmfrjv Antique Point de Gaze Lace Handkerchief
Size: 13″ x 13″
Starting price:$49.95
Auction ends: Oct 24, 2011 18:40:51 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller vintageblessings, Star, ID, United States
Comments: There is no raised work in this Brussels needlelace handkerchief, and little in the way of decorative fillings. But the design is quite dense with good symmetry. You don’t see deliberately squared off lace edgings much. There is non-negligible damage to the lace, primarily in the point de gaze ground, but also in a little of the toilé. I know people think you can repair things like this, but finding the thread and someone with the expertise is not easy. This one has to stand on it’s own as is.

   Sold for $66.00, 6 bidders.

Starting price:$25.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Oct 24, 2011 19:02:23 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller sirjle, Paris, France
Comments: This is a beautiful Irish Crochet blouse in fine condition. The larger flowers are not overwhelming, and are nicely set off by the square bride ground. Everything is aligned to the drape of the design, especially in the front, and I like the big sleeves. The work on the crochet motifs is close and interesting, even including some elements that pass through others.

   Sold for $188.49, 9 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3hnqxzo 19thc Irish Lace Hight Neck Collar Clothing Dentelle Irelande Col
Size: neck 12.2″
Starting price:$39.00
Auction ends: Oct 24, 2011 19:10:38 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller sirjle, Paris, France
Comments: The motifs on this Irish Crochet collar are so fine, and the ground looks almost like a snowstorm. I think the neckpiece is a later addition, it doesn’t match in technique, but acutally looks OK. Note the raised almost ‘popcorn’ elements in the big flower at the front. There are Clones knots in the ground just below the neckpiece, the rest is a Rose of Sharon variation. Seller notes a few stains, otherwise I can’t see anything wrong. Although you can’t really see the original neck edge because of the addition.

   Sold for $69.00, 5 bidders.

Starting price:45.00 EUR
Auction ends: Oct 25, 2011 12:38:20 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller chantaiziere, Centre, France
Comments: This seller has two pieces with exactly the same photo and description, so it’s a little confusing (see Ebay #120795803932). Nonetheless, this is a good piece of Point de Gaze. No raised work, and no real decorative fillings. But the roses are quite naturalistic, and the condition looks very good. I can’t spot any significant damage.

Sold for 166.00 EUR, 9 bidders
Second example sold for 205.00 EUR, 9 bidders

http://tinyurl.com/3rjhpos Antique White Lace Wedding Hanky Hankie Handkerchief Valenciennes Val de Gand
Size: 11.5″ square
Starting price:$49.95
Auction ends: Oct 25, 2011 17:58:03 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller jpmg91, Midwest, United States
Comments: Val de Gand is a pieced lace. This is not Valenciennes de Gand, it appears to be a continuous Valenciennes which seems to have been made as a handkerchief edge. It is quite well done, and you can see the high quality by the whitework embroidery and beautiful hemstitching.  Seller cites some light discoloration, but otherwise I can’t see anything wrong.  Nice piece.

   Sold for $76.00, 3 bidders.

Comments: A semi-circular Chantilly bonnet veil. The row of holes along the top is mean to thread a ribbon.  The border of flowers and ribbons is elaborate for this form, and note the extensive use of dots in the ground. Condition looks very good, I can’t spot any problems.

Offered by: Ebay seller sandyfhbeating, TONBRIDGE, Kent, United Kingdom
Comments: A densly worked Irish Crochet collar. Small motifs, lots of raised edges and rings. Clones knots picots. The design is roughly symmetric around the midpoint, but still has a rather charming haphazard look.  There seems to be some staining along the neck edge, but overall it is in very good condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller sandyfhbeating, beyondthetower, SOMERSET, United Kingdom
Comments: A Honiton collar, slugs/snails period, with a bride ground. I think the ground is a coarse needlelace giving a large mesh, but the closeups aren’t enough to tell. Well worked, and I don’t see any condition problems. I think there are some lighting issues that look like staining, but it’s probably OK.

Comments: A large Irish Crochet collar. Tightly worked motifs, clones knot picots and extensive raised work in the centers of flowes. It has this curious 4-fingered motif that I can’t identify.  The motifs are large, and well placed. I can’t see any condition issues from the photos. Seller cites some discoloration.

Offered by: Ebay seller cragonisnt, cuyahoga falls, ohio, United States
Comments: A scarf of Brussels Duchesse. I can only see one end which looks good, and I’ll assume the other end is the same. It has a good symmetric design of typical flowers and leaves, with inserts of Point de Gaze. I can’t tell if the rose petals are raised. It is a complete piece with a few small breaks, but overall good condition.

Comments: A border of Alençon needlelace with the reseau ground. Probably early 19th century. There is only one photo, but that looks in remarkably good condition. The reseau ground doesn not hold up well over time.  This is a thin, delicate laces, sometimes called Herren Alençon since it was used as ruffles on men’s cuffs. This piece is almost too delicate for that.

Comments: Several lengths of a good quality  Bruges bloemwerk, very similar in design to Ebay #160507334602 that sold last November.  There are slight differences in the pattern.  The condition looks good, although I can’t tell if the yellowed color is true.

   Sold for $15.50, 3 bidders.

Auction ends: Oct 19, 2011 01:27:36 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lunnantiques, London, London, United Kingdom
Comments: Alençon and Argentan were virtually indistinguishable at this period, so it could go either way. Another ‘Herren Alençon’ example, this one a little heavier than the one previously discussed.  Brides tortillee in the main ground, regular reseau along the edge. I can’t tell the condition of the header edge because it is hidden by the engrelure. It might have come from a sleeve ruffle, hard to tell. Condition is a bit rough, some pulls and apparent repairs in the photo.

Auction ends: Oct 19, 2011 12:12:44 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller acupingo, Coraopolis, PA, United States
Comments: A rather flamboyant collar of Brussels Duchesse. The neckline looks quite small. A lot of raised bobbinlace in the motifs, and good quality raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze inserts. There aren’t enough closeups to give a really good idea of condition, but from a distance it looks very good.

Comments: I wrote to the seller asking for closeups of this piece (which helped a little but not much). It looks like a fine crochet perhaps with a needlemade ground. I’ve seen pieces like  this, sort of halfway between Irish needlelace and Irish crochet. Very interesting. The condition looks quite good.

Comments: The closeup isn’t very detailed, I almost wonder if this is Mechlin. It’s a good design of thin flowers and budgs in the ground – not unknown in either Lille or Mechlin. The condition is a little rough, 2 joins, one stain that I can see, and a few holes. But it’s a rare lace.

Comments: A later copy in bobbinlace of a Reticella design. The first Cluny laces did wonderful work like this, so that’s my guess.  The condition looks very good, I don’t see any problems.

Comments: An interesting Honiton collar. Wish it had been laid flat for the photo.  The roses are quite large, anda there are some interesting leaves with a half-stitch surround.  Work looks very good. It is a ‘point’ Honiton, with a needlelace ground. Seller cites some yellowing, but overall it looks very good.

Comments: This is a typical width for Chantilly, and the length is no surprise either. The design is quite delicate and a bit thin, but it fills the space well. Comments: A Honiton handkerchief with some interesting spiral shaped flowers. The motifs are well worked and closely set.  There is a lot of staining particularly in the center cloth, but it should clean up well with proper conservation.  The cloth is also separated from the border in a few places.

Comments: A very interesting Duchesse de Bruges collar. The bobbinlace motifs are large and tending toward an art deco naturalism. I especially like the treatment of the neckline. The condition looks very good, I can’t spot any serious problems. Just a couple stains.

Comments: This certainly could be a Carrickmacross guipure.  The beaded upper edge, and the long picots on the bottom edge are not typical, but not unknown.  It is an impressive design. Comments: A very nice bertha of a lace sometimes just called ‘Flanders’. It derives from Bruges motifs, with a needlelace ground in selected areas.  Quite an impressive presentation, and the condition appears excellent. Often this kind of lace is not well done, and is extensively  used for heavier table linens.

Collecting: Dentelle Méchanique Stamps – issued October 10, 2011

Four interesting stamps have just been released in France honoring machine-made lace. If I understand correctly, a hot glue is applied to a large piece of lace to stiffen it.  The lace is then cut into sections by hand, and fixed to the stamp. They represent Leavers Chantilly, Puy-en-Velay and surrounding regions bobbinlace, Leavers Alençon, and Leavers Calais. A stamp issued in this format is called a ‘souvenir sheet’, and these measure 10.5 cm by 7.15 cm.  They are already showing up on Ebay and Delcampe, usually priced from 4.00 to 4.50 euros per stamp. But the best way to buy them is to go directly to the French mail service La Poste site, http://tinyurl.com/3no46z9, where they can be ordered for 2.50 euros each. The symbol Φ is included in the design of three of the stamps – you are supposed to find it. It is in the lace itself, and is not the Le Puy one.

So far, I have seen one first day cover, dated October 8th.

Size: 16″ x 128″
Starting price: 9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 12, 2011 12:00:51 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller baraud, Newton Abbot, United Kingdom
Comments: Apologies, my Ebay automatic watch list notification failed over the past few days and I missed this important piece. It is a wide Point de Gaze flounce. Note the pointed raised petals on the roses, with clothwork including small window patterns. A sign of a superior manufacturer. Good and varied fillings are present throughout the elaborate border. The design is of naturalistic flowers and leaves, with sprays of small leaves in the upper ground. The piece is in overall good condition with scattered tiny holes in the net throughout. Some repair has been attempted. The seller says the piece has been ‘given a gentle wash’. It does appear slightly wrinkled, and I can’t tell the color. It would certainly improve with the attention of a trained conservator.
Note, this appears to be another part of the piece offered on Ebay as #260802166693 last June (http://tinyurl.com/4y2vcqb).   The length is different.

Comments: A Point de Gaze handkerchief, no monogram. The design looks complex, but is fairly simple. One raised petal roses throughout, and the fillings are not complicated. The condition appears very good. I can’t see any problems from the photos. The size is a bit small. (this listing will probably have ended by the time I post this piece, but I’ll still include it in the Alerts).

Comments: So much Gros Point available today has been cut up and reassembled, that collectors are more buying motifs than a complete piece of lace. Looking at this piece on a motif basis, it is quite nice. Extensive tightly worked clothwork in several patterns. The cordonnets are well sculpted with decorative picots. It looks like a few brides might have survived. I’m of the firm opinion that you can learn just about all there is to know about needlelace technique by looking closely at a good piece of Gros Point. This is a nice place to start. Condition is chancy – some separations in the clothwork, and a few  frayed spots. But there doesn’t seem to be much unravelling of the cordonnets, which is often a problem in this kind of work.

  No bids.

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges border, fairly wide – wish there were more. It’s a crowded assembly of flowers and leaves. Individually the motifs are well done, taken all together I find it a bit confused. Overall good condition, I do see a few broken brides and some small  holes.

   Sold for $157.50, 3 bidders.

Comments: A small Point de Gaze colar. Note the conected picots on the edge, imitating the horsehair edge of Alençon. The clothwork is dense, sometimes including window patterns. Raised petal roses, not much in the way of fillings. Condition looks very good, I think the few scraggeling threads along the border might be leftovers from some past attachment.

Comments: This looks like a good bucks border. Note the extensive areas of fillings, alose the small flowers contained within some filling areas.  The pattern is a bit simple, and some catch pin edgings could be worked a bit closer to the gimp. But overall it’s quite a nice piece, with no condition issues that I can see from the photos.

Comments: A border of late 18th c Mechlin with a straight edge. It’s a bit worn, some pinholes in the mesh and frayed edge in places – I think I can also spot some well-done repairs. It’s also quite soft from wear. The work is excellent with great detail in the edge motifs, and 6 rows of dots in the upper mesh. This is a summer lace meant to be ruffled.

Comments: This is a Beveran pattern. It does not have the typical small tallies in the ground – the open circles are an interesting variation. The straight thick edge is pure Beveran.  The technique of this lace is extensively documented by Nadine Pauwels in her ‘Beverse Kanten’ series published by the Kantcentrum. The condition of this piece looks very good, I don’t see any problems.

Comments: A very good length of mid 18th c Mechlin. The condition looks very good, a few pulls in the ground, but no major damage. There are some interesting fillings in the open spaces, otherwise it’s a typical Louis XV undulating design. Nice piece in a good collectible length.

Comments: A Honiton guipure collar of interesting design. Still in the snails/slugs tradition, but the ‘arrowhead’ design is quite unusual. Well made with extensive tally fillings. There are several large gaps near the neckline, which could be repaired. The neckline also looks a bit discolored from wear. But overall the piece is in good condition.

Comments: A Bruges Bloemwerk bertha. Large motifs with a typical bride ground. A few woven tallies in the centers of open spaces (I’ll make it a goal in the coming year to use terminology more consistent with the technique). The motifs are large and nicely done. The motif size gives the piece a bit of a clunky appearance. Something is wrong with motif arrangement, I’m having trouble identifying a left-right symmetry to the piece. It looks a bit thown together. Scattered breaks throughout, not too serious.

Comments: A Maltese bertha. Good dense design, and it looks like there are 4 separate lengths joined together. That’s very typical for pieces like this, and adapts to the long, narrow Maltese/Gozian pillow. Some good guipure along with the typical Maltese crosses and grids of leaves. It’s hard to tell how the ends are treated, looks a little rough. The seller says it’s in perfect condition, but I think I see a few disconnections. Nothing major, and overall it is in good condition. Check with the seller about payment, I don’t think they take Paypal.

Comments: I’m always a little amazed at Maltese parasol covers – it seems such a heavy lace for this application. But this is the 4th one to come up on Ebay in the past year.  As with most large Maltese pieces, it is made of several narrow lengths sewn together. The design is a typical St. John’s cross motif with lots of woven leaf roundels and grids. In Maltese we look for more innovative guipure designs – this one is good, but not surprising. Condition looks good, a few spots, nothing seriously broken.

Comments: A Honiton shawl collar with big, bold designs. The large feathers along the border are a real marker and could probably be traced to a specific manufacturere. The lacemaker(s) have tried hard for naturalistic flowers (roses, thistles, lily-of-the-valley and others), and are fairly successful. Note this has a needlelace point ground (Honiton Point), which is a bit unusual for such a piece of this size. Condition looks very good – seller cits a few small breaks but I don’t see them. The neck edge does look a bit ragged in places.  Just for fun I’ve put a photo of a similar piece from my own collection, but with a bride ground, next to the listed piece. Note the similarities, especially in the neck edge motifs.

Comments: Small scale Venetian needlelace like this is often called ‘Rose Point’. And just like the larger sizes it is still subject to considerable reworking. One can almost trace an undulating pattern, and in the third photo down at the right there seems to be a central symmetry point.  A more conventional Gros Point (of better workmanship in my opinion) is attached to a few inches at the right end. In the majority of the piece the work is a little simple, although the surviving brides are rather interesting. It’s just not Gros Point at its best.

Comments: This is the second ‘English Reticella’ sampler that Anne has offered in the past 4 months (http://tinyurl.com/3wvqa7a). It’s a lovely pattern and the needlelace stitches do look consistent with 17th century English work. I always keep Margaret Simeon’s book right next to my computer, and took a closer look at the piece Anne illustrates with the tag. From the quality of the photo in the listing, I’ll speculate that Anne has access to the original Simeon piece. Simeon labels her lace as a 17th century lace sampler, but does not give a country of origin. Note that it has a parchment backing, unlike the Ebay one, which could indicate that the work is complete and the backing removed.
The condition is excellent.

Comments: A Point de Gaze handkerchief, no raised work and no elaborate fillings. It looks quite nice, there’s some attempt at naturalism in the corner motifs. But I find the detailed work a bit plain.  I see one very small hole in the net at the top right center, but otherwise very good condition.

Comments: A Chantilly mourning fan with Mother of Pearl sticks. The lace is on a white ground, which is a bit unusual. It’s a finely worked lace, but I might expect a little more in the way of decorative fillings. Those are usually the truest sign that a piece is handmade, and I had to stare awhile to convince myself that this one is good. The lace is in excellent condition – I just wish it could have been mounted in a bit more elaborate setting.  The labels on the box are great – little water stained on top.

Comments: This piece has been listed before (March 10, 2011 Ebay Alerts), but is so good that I’m giving it another go.  Contrary to what I said in the previous listing, I think the edge is original. It is much smaller and more finely worked that you might think from the photos. It was normally used as an edging for a cap. It really is called ‘Dutch Lace’, and is little illustrated in the standard references. Jourdain’s “Old Lace” is an exception, but gives little practical information. This piece is very long, and the seller states there are three well matched joins. Condition looks basically perfect.

Comments: A good set of Alençon lappets, quite long, and joined at the ends. They use the reseau ground, and have some elaborate fillings. It’s a beautiful set, but there are some condition issues – stains, pulls and repairs to the ground, some fraying. But frankly most of the reseau lappets from this period show the same thing, and this is just as good as you are likely to find for a long time.

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruxelles bertha. Rather open work in the linen stitch in the bobbinlace. The flat rose inserts of point de gaze are fairly simple, no raised petals. I find the motifs a little large for the form, but quite well made. Condition is very good, no damage I can see. Seller cites a few broken brides, but this is very minor wherever they are.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse dress front. The areas of Point de Gaze are unusually large, with layered rose petals. The bobbinlace motifs are rather conventional, including a little raised work, and the design assembly seems a bit haphazard. The overall form of this piece is interesting, and it lies nicely over the shoulders and bust. An unfortunate small hole in the needlelace ground, but it is toward the back, and the rest looks in good condition.

Comments: The flowers on this piece show some interesting layering. Square meshed picoted ground. The neck edge is a bit puzzling, I can’t really tell how it is made. Seems volded over.  I like the looped row of trefoils around the edge. And the repeated use of the grapes is a nice counterpoint to the different flowers and leaves. In staring at this for a whitel I thought it just might be silk, but I’m not sure.  Condition looks very good.

Comments: A Bruges joined lappet set scarf. Good, crisp motifs, more a ‘fine bloemwerk’ technique. Note the sharp picots separated from the motifs around the outer edge.  Good raised veins in the leaves.  Very minor loose threads, overall condition is very good.
