Ebay Alerts! Twenty-two items – September 25, 2011

http://tinyurl.com/3qza923 Wonderful pair antique 19th C hand made lace sleeves
Size: not given
Starting price:  20.00 GBP
Auction ends: Sep 26, 2011 04:06:57 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller garchick, Tunbridge Wells, United Kingdom
Comments: An interesting pair of sleeves showing how very good Irish Crochet can be used as yardage.  The motifs in the lace are tightly worked, varied in design, with raised ring centers. Looks like Clones knots on the bride ground.  A very effective presentation, only minor damage from a broken bride or two.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/3eo77zu Antique Carrickmacross handmade lace collar
Size: 32″, 5.75″ down center back
Starting price:  14.99 GBP
Auction ends: Sep 26, 2011 09:02:03 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A collar of Carrickmacross applique on machine net. That allows for net embroidery stitches used as fillings, as well as some cut out areas filled with picoted brides. Some of the cloth applique also includes a little embroidery. Typical Carrickmacross large ring edging. The piece is somewhat the worse for wear, the edges are not very crisp, and there’s some stain spots. A little fraying in some of the motifs mainly along the lower edge.

Sold for 22.00 GBP, 6 bidders.

Starting price:  0.99 GBP
Auction ends: Sep 26, 2011 13:58:24 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller beyondthetower, SOMERSET, United Kingdom
Comments: A continuous tape lace something – I don’t know what this is. But it’s pretty cool. I’m thinking Italian, maybe the Abruzzi area? Condition looks very good, I can’t spot any problems in the photos.

Sold for 12.67 GBP, 6 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/42wjbs7 Antique Russian Lace Collar*Vologda Lace*Circa 1800’s

Auction ends: Sep 26, 2011 18:10:58 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller sugarbaby2011, The North Pole, Canada
Comments: It looks like Vologda, good tape work and nice plaited ground. This kind of lace always seems to have a wonderfully bold look (which you can see in full if you ever get to the new Vologda lace museum in Russia).  This piece is of a nice size, and seems in very good condition.

   Sold for $88.99, 2 bidders.

Starting price:  39.99 GBP
Auction ends: Sep 27, 2011 06:46:06 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A Bertha of Bruges Bloemwerk, composed of fairly simple 5 petaled flowers, leaves, and a few looped trails. Plaited bride ground. the whole thing is a bit plain. Has a few condition issues, mainly holes, especially along the end at the bottom right in the photo.

Dold for 53.00 GBP, 4 bidders.

Size: 40 cm long
Starting price:  50.00 GBP
Auction ends: Sep 27, 2011 11:58:48 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller curiocabinetuk, Kenilworth, United Kingdom
Comments: A beautiful upright English bobbin winder of light wood. Nice turning work, and note the wooden handle to the screw. Sometimes that was done in metal. Looks in very good condition.

Sold for 51.00 GBP, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/3qtymmx Lovely Antique Handmade Needle Lace and Mother of Pearl Fan
Size: 8.75″ long
Starting price:  9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Sep 27, 2011 12:00:58 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller curiocabinetuk, Kenilworth, United Kingdom
Comments: A very light and airy Belgian needlelace fan with mother-of-pearl/bone sticks. No raised work, which is not a detriment. Very good filling work – a real exercise in rings. I can’t spot any condition issues.

Sold for 128.85 GBP, 12 bdders.

http://tinyurl.com/3ptjow3 EXQUISITE Antique Victorian Brussels POINT de GAZE LACE Dress Collar JABOT

Starting price:  $9.99 with reserve
Auction ends: Sep 27, 2011 16:41:59 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller jhartsong, Portland, Maine, United States
Comments: A Duchesse de Bruxelles scarrf.  Note the large elaborate point de gaze rose with raised petals on the end – that seems to be the only needlelace in the piece. The design is good – cartouches filled with different flowers working their way up the scarf. The motifs do seem a little large for the design. Overall very good condition, I can’t spot anything wrong.

$104.50, 5 bidders, reserve not met.

Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: A good Brussels application on machine net, bobbinlace motifs with ring needlelace jour fillings.  Lovely design of bows and flowers. Note the dots in the upper ground, going the extra mile.  Seller notes age discoloration, mild fraying on the ends and minor breaks. Overall the net appears in good condition, which is very important in pieces like this.

   Sold for $224.50, 5 bidders.

Starting price:  $9.99 with reserve
Auction ends: Sep 27, 2011 18:03:35 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller jamiexmas*, Southbridge, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: A very good Point de Gaze shawl collar with lappet ends. Good raised petal roses, and well-done jour fillings. Very good medallion of fillings at the termination of each lappet. An impressive piece with well-scaled design. Condition looks very good, maybe a pinhole here and there, but this is very minor.

Offered by: Ebay seller jamiexmas*, Southbridge, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: Interesting Rosaline cuffs.  The technique is a bit loose, giving them a lighter appearance. Looks like needlelace rings. Condition appears very good, maybe a little fraying in some of the rings.

Auction ends: Sep 27, 2011 18:09:55 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller jamiexmas*, Southbridge, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: Good Point de Gaze cuffs, in very good condition. Note the ‘windows’ in the raised rose petals, a sign of a better manufacturer. Otherwise the design is a bit conventional.

Sold for $76.00, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/44xs5s2 FINE HAND MADE POINT DE GAZE BRUSSELS MIXED LACE TRIM
Size: 2.75″ x 30″
Starting price:  $9.99 with reserve
Auction ends: Sep 27, 2011 18:10:05 PDT)
Offered by: Ebay seller jamiexmas*, Southbridge, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: 19th c Point d’Angleterre bobbinlace with a point de gaze reseau.  The raised centers of the bobbinlace flowers resemble Rosaline, and I see that a little bud of Point de Gaze snuck into the design. I like the bobbinlace better than the needlelace in this piece. It’s a little more conventional than the often over-the-top Pt d’A pieces that are some of the best of the 19th c Belgian laces.  Looks in very good condition, I can’t spot anything wrong from the photos.

$31.00, 3 bidders, reserve not met.

Starting price:  $19.00
Auction ends: Sep 27, 2011 18:14:23 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller jamiexmas*, Southbridge, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: A wide Maltese collar with extensive leave ground in the center section. It is made in 3 sections, the neckline, outer edge, and inner filling, as is typical of most large Maltese pieces. You can see a little separation between these rows in one place.  The alternating flower and grid pattern in the outer border is a bit unusual. There’s a little discoloration in the inner neckline, and a few broken attachments.

Sold for $19.00, 1 bidder.

Auction ends: Sep 27, 2011 18:19:24 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller jamiexmas*, Southbridge, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: Bobbinlace application on what looks like handmade droschel net. You can see the ~ inch wide strips joined together if you look carefully. The form is a bit unusual, normally these are square veils or hat veils with 3 sides decorated. It is a kind of double collar shawl, with the applique on top when the upper part is folded over. A few repairs to the ground, and some minor breaks, but overall good condition. This is a very nice piece.  This kind of fine linen handmade net basically disappeared by 1840.   You never see this superb drape again.

Sold for $203.50, 5 bidders.

Auction ends: Sep 27, 2011 18:20:56 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller jamiexmas*, Southbridge, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: A good collar of Carrickmacross applique on machine net. Some shamrocks in the design, and it has the typical Carrickmacross looped edges. Some net embroidery fillings, and cutwork filled with picoted brides. I can’t see any condition issues – it’s a good representative example of this kind of work.

No bids.

Offered by: Ebay seller uniqueturtles, baltimore, MD, United States
Comments: Wow, you really got me on this one.  It has a base of white Point de Gaze but a lot of the cordonnet is done with a gold cord. The photos aren’t close enough, so I’ll guess it’s couched on.  What is it? Let me speculate; the form, for all the small size, looks like a veil. So it might have been a mantilla for a saint figure. The butterfly could be a resurrection symbol. There are some holes in the reseau but otherwise looks in good condition.

   Sold for $84.00, 4 bidders.

Offered by: Ebay seller uniqueturtles, baltimore, MD, United States
Comments: A good Point de Gaze collar with raised petal roses. It’s a lot whiter than it looks from the photos.  It has some areas of nice grid like fillings, otherwise a pretty conventional design. Overall good, but with a few stains.  See also item 220860201398 from this seller – an interesting little Point de Gaze motif.  Please don’t photograph your white laces on light brown backgrounds.

Auction ends: Sep 30, 2011, about 7 PM MST.
Offered by: Ebay seller cork123, Cleveland, Ohio, United States
Comments: I’m thinking this isn’t Beds, but a Spanish Guipure like Almagro. The brides and edge treatments of the looped vines seem rather beds, but there’s no sign of the typical plaited edge. And, Amalia is not a typical English name (think Portugese Fado). Condition looks very good, I can’t see any problems.

Offered by: Ebay seller ogop, Lincoln, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: Theodore Roosevelt’s cousin nothwithstanding (Mrs. J. West Roosevelt, maiden name Laura d’Oremieulx (1858-1945)), this piece falls rather flat. Might be a Brabant example. The two ‘lappet’ ends match minimally, and the whole thing isn’t long enough to be two lappets joined together. The picoted edge looks like a later addition – this was sometimes done in the 19th century to ‘improve’ older laces. It might be a reassembled piece, but hard to tell too much without seeing the whole thing. Condition looks good.

Comments: A good Point de Gaze handkerchief, that you can hardly see because of the pink background. Nothing much in the way of fillings, but some interesting raised centers to various flowers. It has a wrinkled, washed look. Has some condition issues, see description for more details.

Comments: A good Honiton frontpiece, snails/slugs period, nicely made. A plaited bar ground. It’s a very typical Honiton piece, in very good condition, maybe a spot or two but it might be a trick of the light. I get an impression it’s been photographed from the back, some of the brides are crossing over the motifs.

Offered by: Ebay seller lunnantiques, London, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A narrow scarf nicely designed with flowers of woven leaves, a mirrored undulating trail, and a looped plaited border. Hard to ascribe an origin, but I get a kind of German feeling from the piece. I like it a lot, simple elements combined into an effective design. The photography I think highlights a few spots, but the lace itself looks in very good condition.

Auction ends: Sep 24, 2011 10:30:10 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller things*most*delightful, Sacramento, California, United States
Comments: A very interesting Irish Crochet collar, and sellers are taking note. It has a wide and varied collection of motifs tied by large, medium and small meshes. Most of the motifs aren’t all that unusal, it’s the way they are put together that is impressive. Note the unusual edge treatment, and the triplet of flowers tied with a bow at the bottom point. It has an Orvietto feel, but there’s no way to trace that impression. Seller cites a few broken bars, but overall very good condition.

Comments: The design on this unusual dress is a bit thin and scattered, but there is a good variety of well-made motifs. You would have to put something under it to make it work. Seller notes that it has been recently washed, and there is some discoloration. Condition looks very good.

Offered by: Ebay seller jack_russel, Seraing, Belgium
Comments: A good Flemish Pottery lacemaker by Alfons Noséda, Kortrijk, operated 1914-1937. It’s a little small, and there isn’t any cutout detailing in the chair and pillow stand that you see in larger pieces by this potter. The highly ruched cap and full mantel is a unique characteristic of Noséda. The extensive use of blue is also typical, and the striped pattern on the mantel is a bit unusual. Lacemakers by Noséda are fairly rare in any size. Condition is excellent, no damage that I can see.

Comments: A very good Honiton handkerchief with what looks like a needle-made ground. Small, varied motifs, note the one bird. The edge holds everything together, the rest seems a little thrown together. Only a little attempt at fillings in the centers of the roses. Very good condition, I can’t see any problems.

Offered by: Anne Swift, Ebay seller eastayton, London. England, United Kingdom
Comments: Very nice.  2nd quarter 18th century, probably Belgian, although the Devon workers were trying to imitate this kind of work. The picot edge around the sides and top is a later addition, wish they had left it alone. A good dense pattern with minimal bride ground. Snowflake is used as filling, not really as a ground as you sometimes see. Some of the motifs are a bit clumsy, but there is also some well handled clothwork. There’s a vertical mirror symmetry – I think the right side is a bit better than the left. The pattern on the bottom third doesn’t quite align with the top of the piece; it seems to be more compact on the bottom. But I don’t think it’s a married piece. It’s difficult to criticize something like this because it is so rare, the condition is very good. But this is what I see after staring closely for a while.

Comments: I don’t know that much about knitted lace, but it’s so unusual to see something like that that I thought I’d put it up. I love how Anne shows it going through a gold ring. Overall it looks in very good condition, perhaps a few little pulls if you look closely. Nothing important.

Comments: A very good Honiton collar, with larger, feathery leaves.  Needlemade ground. The more naturalistic design with birds and butterflies, and the extensive plaited fillings start to show you just how good this lace can really be. Note the little bell flowers made of half stitch – quite innovative. Condition looks very good.

Comments: The asymetric design of this piece marks it as Italian Punto Nuevo, late 17th century. French examples tend to be a little more systematic and symmetric. I think it’s been cut down from something larger, particularly along the bottom. Not so sure along the top decorated border. In my opinion the ornamentation and raised work on this kind of lace is the finest every made. condition looks very good.

Comments: A good Belgian needlelace fan. Quite flat in design with some interesting double-ring fillings in some flowers. I’ve seen this very sparse picot design on the outside edge – definitely the signature of a forgotten manufacturer. A bit hard to determine the condition, I think I see a few brown spots, and a few pinholes are visible in the photos.

Comments: A small shawl of bobbinlace application on machine net – a few simple needlelace accents in the centers of flowers. The motifs are quite simple, note the almost continuous tape along the edge. It might be English Honiton applique – very hard to tell. There is some brown staining or rust in the net, which seems to be causing a few small holes center back. One repair to a flower filling.

Comments: This appears to be a Maltese bobbinlace centerpiece. Linen maybe? Doesn’t look like silk. Might be a Cluny imitation. Condition looks very good, I don’t see any problems. Maybe laundered at some time? It’s not quite as crisp as one might expect.

Comments: A Brussels bobbinlace with droschel ground, 3rd quarter 18th century. The motifs tend a bit toward a continuous tape as found in Devon laces, so it might be English. It includes simple variations on picoted bars for fillings. Seller notes two small holes near one end, otherwise very good condition. Droschel ground suffers a lot from snags in older pieces, but it looks nicely intact here. This seller is posting a number of pieces from a private museum de-accession this week – no further information on the museum is given.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse bertha. The point de gaze inserts are flat – no raised petals in the roses. I’m glad to see it doesn’t stick solely to roses and leaves in the bobbinlace, there’s a nice ‘tulip’-like motif, and long branches of leaves like ferns. The work is quite light in appearance.  Very minor spots and a broken bride or two – overall very good condition.

Comments: A good pieced Brussels bobbinlace vrai droschel ground. Mid 18th century, typical design of a winding flower and vine trail with smaller motifs int he empty spaces. Drochel ground Some holes near one end, and a little yellow spotting.

Comments: The development of Valenciennes in the early 18th century included extensive snowflake or ‘partridge eye’ grounds. Although a lace like this is often ascribed to Binche, not enough history from that area survives for a definitive attribution. Today this type of lace forms the historical basis for Point de Fee lace. This is a very good straight edge boder, with picots on one side. I think that what looks like picots on the other side is probably a later addition, on top of the original foodside.  Occasional break in the picoted border, and seller cites a some small yellow spots. Overall very good condition.

Comments: A good Duchesse de Bruxelles dress front, with deep scalloped edges. The central point de gaze medallion is rather plain, and is the only needlelace accent. Most of the peice relies on bobbinlace leaves and simple flowers. Condition looks very good, I don’t see any obvious issues.

Comments: A very interesting fan leaf, note the plain guard stick extension at the upper left of the second photo in the post. It has a wonderful Art Nouveau quality. I’m a little thrown by the large areas of machine net – maybe the areas were too large to have made the point de gaze reseau stable? Although that stitch is used to fill some fairly large areas at the center bottom portions of the motifs. Maybe the machine net is a replacement? Very hard to tell. The needlelace fillings are wonderful and varied, and I especially like the overlaid rings on top of the clothwork.  This has a lot of Belgian technical elements, especially with the overlapping rings at the centers of the flowers. But the edge treatment of the clothwork is quite novel. Pieces like this were made in Germany, so that’s another possibility. Condition, aside from a small separation from the net in the exact center of the piece, and a 2″ area that needs re-attachment, looks very good. There is something a little funny going on with one branch just to the left of the lower center in the photo – no closeup available. Looks almost like a fold in the machine net.

Comments: The presence of the gimp and the quatrefoil motifs are classic Mechlin characteristics. Mechlin experimented with various grounds, this one has both snowflake, and a kind of 5-hole variation. The pair are beautifully intact, with wonderful feathery designs. A little the worse for wear – some fraying on the outer edges and the one end shown, and overall wrinkling. The top ends are sewn together – this is how such pairs survive for so long.  The ends do look cut – no finished motifs, at the join – that’s pretty typical. Somewhere in the 2nd quarter of the 18th century.

But the loose clothwork, the extensive and innovative fillings, and the buttonholing over the cordonnet and bare branches are all Belgian. More a Zele piece. Very minor condition issues. Comments: A very good Brussels bobbinlace with vrai droschel lappet set – the lappets are joined at their wide ends. Mid 18th century, typical design of flowers and undulating vines. What you look for in a piece like this is the variety of the fillings – here they are limited to a hexagonal picoted bride pattern. the motifs are well made, and the condition of th edroschel ground is excellent. Just some breakage in the hex brides near the join. A little spotting, but overall an exceptional pair.

Comments: A very good 19th century collar of unusual shape.  I can’t get a really close look at the ground, but I’m guessing it’s a point ground that this is a Lille piece. Might also be Bucks, but it doesn’t have the variety of fillings I’d expect, and the motifs are a little blocky.  Condition looks very good, I don’t see any problems in the photos given. Comments: Interesting piece – good cut and drawnwork motifs in the linen with bobbinlace borders. Some embroidery to accent the cutwork. Comments: An Irish Crochet top with a small scale chevron design of Rose of Sharon and circles, larger motif at the front neckline. That overall design is repeated in the sleeves, with nice large motif cuff ends. Hard to guess the date on this one. With something designed for a victorian bustle closer to mid century I’d look for a more bell-shaped sleeve. So it might be a later piece.  Condition looks very good, I can’t spot any problems. Comments: An very good Brussels Duchesse dress front. Point de Gze rose with layered, pointed petals.  The bobbinlace motifs are interesting with good raised work – I especially like the pansies next to the needlelace rose, and the feather-like termination at the front point. A complex design, but quite interesting. Condition looks very good, maybe a rare bride needing reattachment.

Comments: This must have been a special order with that large monogram. It’s a duchesse, but also seems to have elements of Valenciennes de Gand, with the monogram and flower motifs against the square ground – definitely higher quality. Photos aren’t detailed enough to see how that ground was made. The fillings along the lower edge are also unusual. Other than having been cut almost in half, condition looks very good for the sections shown in the photos.  No obvious problems.

Comments: I’m putting up this good, but standard Torchon design because of where it was made, Kerala, India. The lacemaking efforts of India have been advertised in the recent past, even a Wall Street Journal article (http://www.dangelohome.com/wsj-dhc.shtm – and be sure to look at the other pages on this site). Kerala is in this area. To see something like this on Ebay is pretty remarkable.

Comments: We normally think of wide borders of heavy, flat early needlelace (later 17thc, I think) like this as English, but no one has yet done a definitive study on the subject. It is sometimes possible to find dates and initials in the work – don’t know about this one. The design is rather abstract, branches and flowers. It seems to be intact. The condition of the net is a definite plus, although I do see a few tiny holes. Design is a bit haphazard.  It’s pretty wrinkled, but in overall good condition. Again, only minor needlelace accents. Some small holes throughout basically in the net, also some staining. Comments: Definitely needlelace, Punto in Aria type, when it was made I don’t know. Structurally it is quite sound. Note the woven tape used as a base – this is a typical Italian extension from a fully drawnwork linen Reticella base. It’s not a complex design, and the work is fairly heavy. It also isn’t a really typical early form. But it has an early feel – just a bit confusing. Condition is quite good although there is a little unraveling of the in some of the structural support.

   Sold for $125.00, 1 bidder.

Size: 15″ x 50″
Starting price: $45.00
Auction ends: Sep 13, 2011 08:41:12 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller tucholska, Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States
Comments: A rectangular runner of guipure bobbinlace – might be Beds, although a little heavy for that kind of work. Might also be French Cluny, or even a Spanish piece. Hard to tell with this kind of lace.   I like the bold design and the round medallions.  Condition looks very good, I don’t see any problems.

   No bids.

Comments: This is a lot of fun, I love the complex filling.  I have no idea where it might be from. Note the looped picots, this might be a clue. And the raised tallies. I’d be interested in hearing opinions.  Condition looks very good.

Comments: Little handmade lace butterflies are so darn cute, and very popular with collectors. Normally made in Point de Gaze, they do come in other techniques like this probable Cluny example. They are basically a 20th century tourist item.  This one is in very good condition. I haven’t seen one in this technique before.

   Sold for $8.00, 4 bidders.

Offered by: Ebay seller anne1054, London E8, United Kingdom
Comments: A snails/slugs period Honiton handkerchief. Could stand a good pressing to get a better idea of condition. Some of the rose fillings look disturbed, and some brides are detached. It’s a standard design, meant for fast production. With a bit of attention it would look much better – for its type, a nice addition to a collection.

Sold for 25.01 GBP, 3 bidders.

Comments: Very interesting piece. Punto Tirato Tela Sfilata was the name of the early Italian work. When this type of work comes up, it’s always a close call as to when it was made, and the documentation with this piece sheds some light on a very confusing area.  I wish the whole piece were shown to see if anything has been cut. I’m not really sure what to make of this.  Is it really a product of the Ladies Work Society, or is it an earlier piece they made have used as an example? A few holes and a repair, but overall good condition.

Comments: A signed Flemish Pottery lacemake (http://tinyurl.com/4baktku) is rare, and the Pieter Jozef Laignel pottery (1898-1929) is about the earliest one making this figure. Actually, the seller says that the square stamp is used by Laignel, and doesn’t seem to definitively give an attribution. It is very small, and I haven’t seen it before.  My own Laignel figures are much larger and more finely worked. The fact that it says ‘Made in Belgium’ in English speaks to the later tourist trade. But then not much is written about Laignel, so who knows. Excellent condition.

These are large works with impressive patterns. Condition appears very good – the small nits are actually thread tie-offs.  All are quite impressive.

Comments: Good Point de Gaze joined 19th c lappets. Naturalistic flowers, no raised petals, and some nice jour fillings.  It does have condition issues, holes in the net ground. It does have that slightly wrinkled washed look, but not bad. Color seems a little beige to me, but that might just be the photography.

   Sold for $86.50, 9 bidders.
